This book by Mary Murphy doesn't just try to change the behavior alone of a person in need of weight control. It goes right to the very heart of the problem ... the reader's heart. The battle starts in the heart and is won in the heart by applying the Word of God to the battle.

If you have tried to take off pounds before and failed, get this book and open your Bible and study how God can change your heart that will then change your habits and attitudes and desires. You will be the winner!

I am digesting the concepts of diligence and honesty. I feel Mary's perspective on these key issue's will help me to be honest about my own weight issues. Mary writes with such knowledge of the different battles, uses great illustrations through parenting, and humor, which I enjoy the most. It's a great read, and through God's help, these concepts will benefit you in areas beyond weight.

This book was such a help for me. My heart hurt so bad after our miscarriage, it was unbelievable. This book helped my head gain a better understanding of the odds, facts, etc. so that my heart could begin to heal. I highly recommend this and have passed my copy on to others who appreciated it too after experiencing mc.

A helpful guide to cope with a tragic loss

I was told very little about my miscarriage, why it happened, how I should deal with it. "It happens to a lot of women", "You will have to grieve like it was a real baby", "It was better to happen now instead of later", "Try again." I was frustrated and didn't understand what just happened to me and my developing baby. This book answered a lot of my questions. I got an understanding of what a miscarriage is, how it happens, and why. (both myth and fact) The stories from other women made me feel that I really wasn't alone. This book helped me cope with the pain of loosing a baby. I highly recommend it to every woman who suffers a miscarriage!

This book combined with Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler helped me prevent a third miscarriage and carry my beautiful little girl to term. What a shame it is out of print. Perhaps there is similar information in another book. The way it helped me was specifically the information regarding treatment options for low progesterone. Using the Weschler book, I was able to diagnose my probable problem. This book gave the treatment of progesterone cream the thumbs down since she says 'most women can't determine exactly when they are ovulating and the cream works best when used 48 hours after ovualtion/conception.' However, using the Weschler book enables you to know both before and after you ovulate and you can even use a kit to help confirm you are ovulating if you want to be very certain. With Weschlur's methods, you can save money on kits since you will probably be so sure of your approaching ovulation, you will only need to use one or two sticks to confirm. Anyway, my heart goes out to all who have experienced miscarriage as I have. God be with you and good luck. I hope this helps someone else out there!

After a miscarriage during my first pregancy, I felt I needed answers. Even though there is rarely a known cause for a miscarriage, I feel better knowing there are steps I can take to make sure everything is being done for me that can possibly be done. I may never need to concern myself with another miscarriage again, but just having some knowledge is very powerful and has given me hope. It was very healing for me to know I now have "knowledge power" when everything else seems so out of my hands. I also plan to share this book with anyone brave enough to speak about their miscarriage. Unless you've gone through it, you don't know how it turns your life upside down. I'm glad there are good books out there on this often "hush hush" subject.

The pages of my copy are well-worn from use. I referred to this book numerous times after each of my miscarriages (3). Very practical advice, in everyday language! Poignant stories from 3 women were very helpful; it helps to know that other women have the same thoughts & fears. I donated a copy to our hospital's support group, and I would love to give a copy of this wonderful book to my Ob/Gyn. Everyone who has had the misfortune to have had pregnancy loss(es) should have this book.

Sensible and caring guide for women with cancer

This book is a helpful guide not only to women diagnosed with breast cancer, but women (and men, too) with any kind of cancer diagnosis. I was fortunate enough to find Hester Hill's support group when I began my own treatment for ovarian cancer. Her wisdom (and that of the other wonderful members of the group) resonate throughout Woman to Woman. A combination of good science and sensible suggestions (DON'T blame yourself, work with your caregivers, learn to say Yes, learn to No), Woman to Woman is almost as good as a group - but only "almost!"

A reassuring and practical guide to breast cancer treatment

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago, one of the first things I did was read a great number of books. I found there were three types: 1) books about the disease itself, 2) books about treatment and 3) memoirs. As I progressed through treatment and a series of subsequent breast surgeries, I found the books on treatment the most frustrating because they were so focused on the medical aspects.

What was not available then was a book like this, which is a very practical and reassuring guide through the treatment process. Written by two breast cancer survivors, this book has two special characteristics: 1) it is reassuring about the ability to cope with treatment, and 2) it contains a lot of good down-to-earth nonmedical advice such as what to take to the hospital to maximize your comfort after breast surgery.

This book definitely fills an important need, even as the number of books on breast cancer continues to multiply. Sadly a number of my friends have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the last several years. One of the first things I do is buy this book and give it to a friend as she begins her journey. I encourage you to do the same whether for yourself or someone you love.

Warmly, clearly, directly written to dispel myths and fear.

An expanded version of an earlier paperback booklet, this wonderful resource reaches out and supports women across a wide range of ages and lifestyles experiencing the trauma of a breast cancer diagnosis.

Written warmly, clearly and directly to each woman, the book addresses not only health-related matters but also personal and psycho-social ones such as spousal and child-related issues. It does not attempt to be comprehensive but provides up-to-date notes, resources, and bibliographical information.

The authors, Schnipper and Berns, know first-hand the reality of this diagnosis; each has been treated for breast cancer and is herself a wife, mother, daughter, friend, and professional. Hester Hill is an Oncology LICSW and Joan Berns, PhD., a very gifted writer.

I have given this book to numerous women...too many friends, relatives and acquaintances...have read it myself even though I have thusfar not become a statistic..but we are all part of this and so I urge you to get a copy, read, and recommend it. You will have saved a large number of fellow human beings from the terror of the unknown. FEAR FLIES IN THE FACE OF AN OUTSTRETCHED HAND BEARING LOVE AND INFORMED SUPPORT.

Wherever you live, a comforting guide to the care you need.

This easy to read, straight-forward, clear and compassionate book is filled with essential information that every woman who has faced this frightening diagnosis needs to know. The authors' gentle conversational style speaks to the reader like a knowledgeable friend. The comfort of their words originates from their own personal challenges coupled with their professional knowledge of what the journey entails.

Anticipating questions and personal needs, the book logically takes the reader through the process of treatment and recovery. It provides a foundation of solid information and resources. Despite the gravity of the diagnosis there is a positive supportive tone that acknowledges that a majority of women can emerge from this terrible ordeal and do it with strength and dignity.

It's so comforting knowing that one is not alone. The resources within this book apply no matter where a woman calls home. In this technologically connected world, a woman living a distance from a major metropolitan area can also find ways to navigate her care from reading this lovely book.

Knowledge is power. The authors clearly believe in the strength of their fellow sisters. This is their gift their way to use their considerable talents to assist others.

This book is fantastic! Its practical, step-by-step, reassuring suggestions and guidance are offered warmly and clearly from a woman who is herself a breast cancer survivor. Hester Hill is a breath of fresh air--from the specific tips on clothing, meals, and planning a hospital stay to making critical decisions about surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. A vital part of Hester's advice is her strong belief in support groups--as she, somehow, becomes part of your own support group through the compassion, love, wisdom, and down-to-earth knowledge that come through the pages of her book. Every word is a nugget.

Every time I walked to and from work, this book's cover would catch my eye from the store window. Curiousity finally won out and I picked up a copy. I am so glad I did. It's amazing! I've tried so many other forms of Yoga, I can't believe it took me this long to get to Kundalini. This book is written from two perspectives; one from a Western doctors' and one from an Eastern Yoga teachers'. It is a really great combination. Together, they do an excellent job of specifically explaining Kundalini Yoga's many benefits to Women. It is detailed, but easy to understand. The energy and exercise sets are extremely rejuvenating and there is a spiritual component that I have reached a stage to be able to really appreciate. There is a ton of useful information here and I have just scratched the surface. I couldn't reccommend it more enthusiastically.

This book is not your average book about yoga for women, but one that celebrates all aspects of a woman's life cycle. The strength of the book is the collaboration with Dr. Seibel, showing the relationship between the yogic concepts and what we know about the body through modern science. The book is beautiful, with clear instructions and photographs. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in coming to a better understanding of their femininity and celebrating their womanhood.

I met Julie and Mark back when I televised them when they were both competing in national and international triathlons. They were both wonderful personalities and great athletes who seemed in great balance with careers, sponsorships, a relationhip and then a family. How did they keep it all together when so many other folks with the same kinds of demands often had train wreck lives. Well, their book, "Workouts for Working People" tells how they keep the important things important and set high goals that, with love, planning and selflessness, are very attainable. A damn good read!

This is an excellent book for beginners and hard-core fitness gurus alike. The book covers all the basics of health, fitness, and well-being. I can never get enough of Mark and Julie. The stories about their careers and the people they have worked with is fantastic. Their conversion to the power of strength training and the "how to" portions of the book can't be beat. This book is filled with great photos and the wealth of knowledge the authors have gained through out their lives. No where can you find the cardio-vascular part of fitness explained so well and made so simple. This book is a must have.

This is an excellent book. The information in it can actually be put to use! -- and excellent use. I was skeptical after I browsed through it, but after reading it completely, their fitness plans make sense and can be put to use by the average working person. Fitness must be part of your lifestyle, and they cover this completely. There is good information presented -- fitness, lifestyle, health, training plans, nutritiion. I especially found Mark's heart rate monitoring helpful (adapted from Phil Maffetone). Before this I never realized I had been working-out too hard. Both Mark and Julie have the experience to back up their concepts, and along the way they share their experiences with you. The training plans are numerous (basic fitness, 5k, 10k, marathon, triathalons), complete, and easy to follow. I recommend the book -- it is not too technical, which makes it easy to read and understand.

A REAL book!

Review Date: 2001-11-12
It's for real. You have two world-class athletes - not bodybuilders or celebrities or fitness models, but two of the fittest people in the world here.

What makes this book different? (1) The Allens recognize that most people have other priorities in life, such as jobs and kids, and therefore can't live in the gym for 2 or 3 hours a day. (2) They also recognize - unlike many athletes - that not everyone shares their passion for their sport. They don't expect you to open this book wanting to do an Ironman of your own as they've done, but they won't discourage you from training for one either!

The book is loaded with sound, honest advice, tips, encouragement and motivation. If you want to get fit, well, you have to work at it. They're not trying to sell you seminars or supplements or some 'magic bullet' that only slims your wallet. They're not trying to relive past glory days either - the anecdotes are purposeful: meant to instruct and/or motivate.

There's several different 18-week workouts here, depending on your goals. All of them offer a balance between cardio (ANY cardio - not just running/swimming/cycling) and weight training. During the week, most workouts are about 30 minutes to an hour, with a longer one on the weekends, and an optional one for the true weekend warrior. Plus, the Allens offer plenty of suggestions for squeezing fitness into a busy schedule for full-time employees and full-time moms.

This isn't another feel-good-because-you-showed-up 'exercise' book. This book is for people who are serious about trying to raise their level of fitness, no matter what shape they're currently in.

I also strongly recommend reading it thoroughly for some of the nuggets hidden inside. For example, 5-6 small meals, each about the size of your two palms held together. An easy visual guide to portion sizes that you always have with you! How can you lose? Or better still, how can you not?

I have waited a long time to buy this book, and now that I finally have it I wish I'd bought it sooner. It has great explanations of how yoga connects with horseback riding. The exercises range from stretching techniques to easy muscle toning for primary riding areas, like the glutes. The stretching exercises are a great way to relax before going to bed. If you're a "weekend" rider and would like a way to work a little bit on your toning and balance between rides, this is the book. Don't let the yoga part turn you off. It's great!

My daughter and I traveled from Central New York to W. Springfield, Mass Nov. 9, 2002 to attend Equine Affaire. There were many workshops and presentations. Linda Benedik was one that we decided we would both enjoy. She demonstrated many of the yoga positions and had us all doing them with her. My daughter is an avid rider, I however just enjoy horses. At 52 I found the yoga made me feel so much more relaxed that I feel it would benefit everyone whether you are a horse person or not. I can not rate the book as I just got it and haven't had the opportunity to read it all yet but if it is 1/10th as good as the workshop you'll need more than 5 stars. If you ever have the opportunity to see and hear Linda Benedik in person - you'll find it well worth while.

This book is excellent. The text is straight-forward and easy to follow, as are the exercises -- amply illustrated. I found just doing a twenty minute routine from this book daily has already helped with suppleness, flexibility and relaxation. If you enjoyed Sally Swift's Centered Riding, then you'll find this a very complimentary read. If fact Swift garners a few mentions along the way. You can't go far in riding if you're tense or inflexible, and this book has lots of ways to counter both those problems. I highly recommend it.

There is wisdom in stretching and relaxing before working with your horse. If you are upset or tense, your horse can sense it and can make for a difficult or really bad work session. My instructor always says "To end on a good note". My mare is particularly sensitive to my moods and would react based on my body language. I had a problem relieving the tension in my lower back due to an injury and my mare could feel it in my seat and legs.

I had picked up a few tips from other riders, but when I purchased the Linda's book, things seemed to click, from breathing to helping me ease the tension in my back. I would try a few exercises before I mounted and while I was mounted. My mare was more relaxed. I think that this book (and video) helped.

I recommend getting the book and the video. The book is great with photos and more in-depth instruction of technique and postures. It is recommended that if you are new to yoga, like myself, that you read the first few chapters before attempting the postures. The video is helpful for those who wish to work with voice instruction and movement instead of flipping through pages and trying to execute what they've just read.

As an avid rider for many years, I found this book very helpful. I have a problem with riding "crooked" because of a rotated pelvis. My unevenness has become more noticeable in the years that I have been riding without an instructor. This book helps you become aware of your body and what you are doing with it. Highly recommended (even if you don't do much yoga -- I don't, but this was just my speed!)

I wouldn't recommend this book unless you wanted a book specifically about Ashtanga, otherwise their are so many other better books on yoga. If you want a book about Ashtanga, then this and David Swenson's books are the best on that style of yoga.

This book is a must for ashtanga practitioners, having been written by the guru of this form of yoga, Sri K Pattabhi Jois. The forward by Eddie Stern provides an interesting background of the life of Pattabhi Jois and how he came to teach western students.
The opening chapter describes what is meant by 'ashtanga' (eight limbs) of yoga, with valuable information regarding yogic philosophy, lifestyle and dietary concerns, quoting from the ancient texts.
Following is a detailed description of the vinyasa/asana practice.
Ashtanga is a challenging and methodical practice of yoga, with emphasis on correct method; from the first sun salutation to the final resting position, there is exact placement of the gaze, the timing of the breath, and sequence of movement.
Those with an interest in yoga generally, or who practice a different form, may also find this book of value, since yoga is yoga and the ultimate "goal" is the same. It is my feeling, however, that without an existing practice and enthusiasm for this method, the book may seem a little dry in the last section.

I have had a copy with me for years, it is an invaluable reference.

Yoga Mala is written by a living legend with many years of practice and teaching experience. I would recommend this book only to those already familiar with Ashtanga, as parts of it will make no sense unless you are. Indispensable knowledge is interspersed with lovely throwbacks to earlier days in India, eg. the part where it is suggested a nice flat floor smeared with cow dung is essential to any good practice space. Gotta love it!

The exercises do not require tremendous flexibility or athletic prowess--you do not have to become a human pretzel to master them. They are effective and fun and not terribly time-consuming unless one wishes to make a discipline. I appreciated the beautiful photographs that are featured throughout the book. They are both calming and exhilerating.

My quibbles are few. First is the size of the book. Although it is compact and therefore easy to slip into a briefcase or handbag, it is difficult to prop open without damaging the binding--something that is necessary when learning some of the exercises. At times it is dificult to see the mudra being demonstrated by the model in the photograph with the actual exercise and it becomes necessary to consult the mudra section in the back. And finally, this is one of those books that would benefit by including a CD of the mantas. This would assist in correct pronunciation and mastering the melody.

I strongly recommend this book both for its efficacy and for making yoga easily accessible in a stress filled forum.

This book is not only clearly and concisely written with powerful, fast acting information, but also stunning to look at. The quality of the paper and beauty of the images make reading Yoga Secrets for Business Success a meditation in itself. It's like owning many yoga manuals and an art book all in one.

I'm a certified yoga teacher, and I particularly appreciate the excellent organization of material, precise times given for each exercise, and the highlighted benefits. The photographs are easy to follow, and the results profound.

I highly recommend Yoga Secrets to both beginners and advanced students alike. Well done Darshan Singh Khalsa! When is the next one coming out?

Don't leave home without it!

I am in sales and frequently travel for work. I always make sure to pack Yoga Secrets for Business Success when I plan for a trip. The stress of traveling can wear on my body, but this book offers secret tips and exercises to keep me healthy and energized while I am away from home.

I recomend this book to anyone who wants to stay positive and free from stress. You can do the exercises at home or in your hotel room when you are away!

There are very clear directions and pictures showing how to do each exercise.

Even if you have never done any yoga, you will find you can do any exercise in this book.

I am happy I found it.

This excellent book is unlike any other yoga book I've seen (and I've read dozens and looked at probably hundreds). The focus is on simple hand postures (mudras) combined with breath and chanting to create fast results. The hand gestures are said to open and or balance the body's energy channels to enhance particular personal qualities, such as awareness, relaxation, happiness, cooperation, etc. One drawback is that the chants are in Sanskrit and feel awkward to this westerner's mouth. They don't sound or feel natural and only a few of them seem accessible enough to actually use. Nevertheless, there's obvious value in them -- when I chant the syllable "Ma," it vibrates and opens my heart, just as the author says it does. I find myself using the book nightly for 20 to 30 minutes, doing several of the postures and meditations, but only a few of the chants. With practice I'm increasing the time I spend with individual postures, but even doing them for a few minutes each makes me feel better. The posture for happiness definitely works. After holding the position for only a few minutes I can feel my mood becoming light and full of joy and humor. I borrowed this book from the library and liked it so much I bought a copy because I want to spend a lot more time with it.

This is a great book! Many yoga books that I've purchased describe only a few sequences. Others describe only very long (time-consuming) sequences. This book details over 30 sequences ranging in time from 10 minutes to 90 minutes in length. It is organized to make it easy to select a sequence according to different criteria - length of sequence, theme (e.g., "opening"), or body area emphasized. Descriptions of the asanas are very detailed, and each comes with a description of the advanced pose and easier variations. And there is quite a bit of other useful information also, including suggestions on forming your own sequences, illustrations showing the location of various muscles and other body areas, etc.

This book was recommended by our local yoga instructor. The spiral binding makes the book lie flat. I really like the split pages with the practices on one side (very wide range from beginner to advanced) and the poses on the other. Arrangement is very simple and straightforward. The teacher kept this book out as a constant reference--which was a good enough recommendation for me--and she is a certified Iyengar instructor with years of practice.

the information presented is comprehensive, helpful, & presented in such a way that

Namaste! I've examined and used a large number of yoga manuals, and I feel sure that you will love this book! Its unique and handily-designed format goes far toward making it the only yoga guide you'll ever need. Ideal for both beginners and experienced practitioners. What you get for the very low price of $12.95 (Canada C$19.95) is incredible! All your questions about yoga are answered by the authors, who really know their stuff. Outstanding photos (from different angles, many in multiple "sequence style" to help you perfect the fluidity of moving poses) with explanatory instructions and pointers make it so easy for you to customize your home yoga practice to your own requirements ... and stick with it!

Spiral-bound split-page format allows easy use and reference for a specially selected core group of "44 poses" (Iyengar tradition, the basis for many yoga styles today) and "31 practice sequences" (varying in length from 10-90 minutes, and ranging from vigorous to restorative). Absolutely excellent, very clear and well-thought-out - yet detailed - explanations and background notes fill you in on every aspect of your yoga practice.

The volume also contains an All About Yoga section, a great Glossary and assorted Practice Selection Charts to help you craft and vary your yoga routine, while ensuring that you get the benefits you desire.

The wealth of information contained here is worth the cover price many times over. Just examine this book at your bookstore - turn to any page and read just a bit - and I think you'll wind up eagerly buying it, amazed at the value. Recommend it to your yoga-loving friends, and give it as an economical gift to your non-yoga-practicing friends to get them started on a beautiful life and health journey! They'll love you for it!

Still Giving Kisses: A Guide to Helping and Enjoying the Alzheimer's Victim You Love
Reading about Lela Knox Shank's incredible committment, creativity and and joy in caring for her husband as he suffered from Alzheimer's Disease was incredibly inspirational as well as informative. As an occupational therapist I appreciated her ingenius adaptations such as Velcro along the sides of his pants to make undressing easier and understanding of emotional needs as she discovered onging solutions to new challenges. As a writer Ms. Shanks presented as such a loving and sincere person, I asked her to write the foreword to my book: Still Giving Kisses: A Guide to Helping and Enjoying the Alzheimer's Victim You Love. Thank-you Lela, for your book, writing my foreword and being who you are!

I especially admire the sections "Twenty Coping Strategies" and "The New Life of the Caregiver and Its Rewards". She is so wise, although she doesn't always acknowledge that other demenitia pateints may not have the same problems. Wish I'd found this book during my husband's illness! I quote it often in my own book, "Voices of Alzheimer's."

Lela Shanks is a true inspiration!

For any family going through this heart-wrenching disease with all of it's struggles, this book should be mandatory reading. I have found, as a daughter of an Alzheimer victim, that people are afraid to ask you about your loved one, because they don't know how to react. Lela Shanks is to be admired for her enlightenment of this disease. This book should be handed out to any family upon the diagnosis of Alzheimers.

I strongly encourage anyone facing any type of involvement with an Alzheimer's patient to read this book. Anyone who knows the author could tell you that she is the type of person who is honest and straightforward. This book is a mirror image of her personality. There are practical solutions to the day to day trials of dealing with an Alzheimer's patient as well as an overwhelming sense of love and acceptance for the entire situation. The book also deals with the importance of support for caregivers. The best thing you can do to support yourself or anyone involved with an Alzheimer's patient is to love them. The second best thing you can do is to educate everyone involved. Start with this book and it will open your eyes and your heart in ways you never thought possible.
