Live Ten Healthy Years Longer examines the principles behind healthy lifestyle habits proven to work. They bolster energy, help fight disease, and decrease the effects of aging. When applied long-term, they can even help you live longer. I like this book because it contains no pop-pysche diet-hype. It is a reality-based guide to healthy living. I trust what it says because its suggestions are based on well documented studies. I think so highly of it, I am sending a copy to my mother. I WANT to keep her around!

This book gives a fresh, and refreshing, perspective on a very tired subject. How many weight-loss books have we been subjected to recently? Not to mention the many books on how to live longer, healthier, sexier--you name it. In one day recently I saw a new book that said the secret to healthy weight is no carbohydrates after 5 pm, and another new book that said just the opposite. Readers are left to wonder who is right. This book provides a balanced view of how to sort throught all the health claims, and make very simple adjustments to the way you live that can make a significant difference in your health. And, these suggestions are all backed up by scientifically valid studies by reputable sources--not just someone else selling something. The book is very readible, and a must read for anyone who considers the spiritual side of their life as important as what they eat and how much they exercise. Every church should consider teaching a course based on this book as a part of their educational outreach to their members and the community.

I found Live 10 Healthy Years Longer to be a helpful guide to attacking the mountain of improving my health. My personal struggles include diabetes, obesity and aging. This book lists and discusses specific causes and solutions to many diseases, conditions and circumstances that lower our quality of life. From stress management and exercise to how to use food and drink to maximum benefit, this book covers all the bases.

Although I have studied nutrition and use of vitamin and herbal supplements extensively, I have not come across any other book that is both comprehensive and easy to understand and follow. Each chapter highlights key elements and charts for quick reference and also contains practical suggestions for implementing the material.

One of the things I enjoy most about the book is that it is not just a health manual. The authors speak in a warm and personal tone, revealing their own experiences with the principles they teach. They are both vegetarian and I don't plan to be. But they outline specific benefits to the various elements of their lifestyle so the reader can intelligently decide what parts they want to incorporate.

I would like to see a chart at the end of the book to summarize the numerous recommendations. Still, this is a book I will be reading and studying continuously as I stretch toward the goal of not just living longer, but living better.

A Balanced Diet of Healthy Advice

In this healthy approach to a healthy life, Kuzma and Murphey present facts as facts, trends as trends, and speculation as speculation, a simply stated smorgasbord of ideas, insights and information, without force feeding their personal beliefs on the reader. First on the menu is the appetizer, "How Long Would You Like to Live?" The book proceeds with well documented and verifiable entrees related to physical and mental health, then concludes with dessert, which includes scripture and Sabbath to feed the soul. This would make a great gift book for any adult and a stimulating study for adult reading groups, both church related and secular.

One of the most difficult dilemmas for a health-care provider is to convince patients that they need to make and sustain major changes in theif lifestyles to make maintain good health and delay or prevent major illnesses. This dilemma has been greatly facilitated by a new book titled LIVE 10 HEALTHY YEARS LONGER.The book reports results of a 40-year Adventist Health Study with over 27,000 participants who made simple adjustments in their lifestyle to help them live 10 or more years longer as compared to a controlled group. The book points to the adage that it is easier to prevent or delay illness than to treat it. The recommendations are simple, easy to apply, inexpensive, and apply generally to persons of any decade. I have recommended this book to my patients and have seen dramatic results in those persons sincerely desiring to take control of their lives in regard to good nutrition, exercise, stress management, etc. I recommend the book highly as a guidebook and reference book for any person or family wishing to take charge of their health. Health-care providers and lay persons in general will find this book an extremely useful resource for achieving and maintaining optimal health and a quality lifestyle.

It has been a while since I have felt compelled to express my joy at a worthwhile, and actually helpful commodity. On the mostly rare occasions, when I find a product that I feel can improve the quality of life, I do feel bound to promote or inform about my find. Two years ago, I offered a review of a health DVD by this author, and so, recently, when I saw that Andy Troy published a book, well, it had to be explored.

Living Young: 32 Habits of Ageless People, turns out to be an informative and practical book of advice about maintaining health into old age. Mr. Troy, CSCS, has written an organized, concise, and user friendly guide to taking care of yourself, once and for all! He takes you through a daily regiment that sometimes requires a little time and planning, yet each step is manageable, with some thought. Although I believe that I do, and have, taken basic care of myself, this book empowers and enables me to clearly prioritize my activities for greatest impact. The book allows me to re-think my habits in a clear fashion so I can make decisions on how to improve and maximize my day to day routines which do impact my health. His suggestions are very worthwhile, and those not in my present repertoire will be slowly and thoughtfully included, down to his recipes and suggestions for dining!

This is a good and quick read with long term benefits for everyone. I strongly and highly recommend this book for all!

Finally---an anti-aging book that really gets down to what we need to know and follow. The 32 habit solution explains the "what" and "why" things are happening to us as we age. How we look and feel is not just about genetics, but more importantly how we care for ourselves day to day. The book provides a clear chapter by chapter road map on simple ways to a better life through a better life style. My thanks to Andy Troy (the author)for writing such a great book. I look forward to your next book!

The fountain of eternal youth has been a recurring theme in our culture since it's inception. Now, we have a book that gives us ways by which we can slow or even reverse the processs.

"To Thine Own Self Be True"

Review Date: 2008-06-14
Shakespeare's immortal line: "To Thine Own Self Be True", is exemplified by Andy Troy, in his recently published book: "Living Young - 32 Habits of Ageless People".

Troy, a nationally-certified fitness and health expert, writes candidly and honestly about the reality that we mortals must all face: the accumulation of birthdays, and the challenges that the body, mind and spirit must face as we move through the stages of the life cycle. However, his is not a tome advocating acceptance and complacency in aging. He outlines, clearly delineates and supportively encourages the reader to take up arms (and legs, and stomach, and torsos, etc...) in the fight against the decline that many persons erroneously accept as the natural process of getting older.

This superior book, which is the best I've read in the last decade on health and well-being, does not deny that aging occurs. Instead, what it does brilliantly is provide the reader with transcendent insights, techniques and tools to make a difference. Troy eloquently provides the information that every man and woman needs to get much more out of life as they grow older, and to stop the decline of health and fitness if it has begun.

Troy's book takes a "holistic" path in addressing the human body, mind and spirit. And while he outlines his expertly developed exercises and workout routines to strengthen, restore and rejuvenate the body, he does not stop at the corporeal. Sections include avenues for optimal meditation, posture and breathing to rejuvenate consciousness. His eclectic approach includes sections on hydration, aromatherapy, vitamins, the delights when you "learn something new", the therapeutics of music, and even the panache provided by a "revised" wardrobe.

This informative book even contains recipes for a healthier life, including "Sue's Grilled Chicken & Broccoli in red sauce", a savory dish which I have already made a staple of my culinary repertoire.

Troy, who epitomizes the concept of "do as I do, AND as I say", is a wonderful guide through the myriad challenges faced by an individual who wants to feel better and happier. His narrative is supportive but uncompromising. He understands that if you are reading this book, you want to do something; you don't just want a pat on the back, you want a firm hand up, a plan that can help you live a better, healthier life.

I've read the book several times, and continue to glean new and inspired ways to improve my condition. This book has helped me recommit to exercise, a better diet, and a more rewarding approach to my daily challenges.

But all work and no play makes for a dull existence, and Andy encourages us to enjoy the delicacies and decadences around us. And while he points out the health benefits of one or two glasses of wine, he also gives a nod to the Socrates principal of "moderation".

Troy's book is a revelation, with so many fine recommendations and lessons, and even more insights and delights. "Living Young - 32 Habits of Ageless People" is a cornucopia of useful information and practical and practicable exercises. And that is just one part of this great book. As the Bard had Hamlet say, "There are more things in heaven and earth Horatio than are dreamt of in your philosophy".

Andy Troy's book, of which I am a proud owner, is guaranteed to change your philosophy about health, exercise, well-being, and aging.

What recommended this book to me was that the authors were pioneers in the concept of the glycemic index. I knew intuitively that this concept mattered, but till recently all I knew was too many carbs were bad. But this is one of the books that corrects that notion to say that what matters is how directly a carbohydrate enters the bloodstream. Too directly means a load on the pancreas, perhaps an overreaction, perhaps hypoglycemia, and over time insulin resistance. The book not only explains that lucidly but then it moves on to explain how a person can revise his diet so that there is a healthy percentage of carbs without these adverse results. I can't say if the book is superior to others, but I can say that it contains useful information expressed in understandable terms.

Excellent book on how to eat

This book is an excellent one for understanding how and what to eat. For those of us who may have grown up in families where it was always meat and potatoes until full, with an occasional soggy veg thrown in, this book is great at helping you learn what it means to eat in a healthy way that allows you to be full and lose weight if you need to. It even addresses exercise in ways that most people can do easily at home.

This is the first book on eating (or dieting) that I've really understood because it makes sense. No alarm bells went off in my head about eating this way, no doubt that I could sustain this way of eating for life, and no worrying about how much this was going to cost in specially purchased foods or gym memberships.

The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that the recipes are pretty far out there and contain a lot of ingredients not readily available in the average kitchen. Plus, the cooking involved is probably something that would reduce the chance of anyone trying too many of these recipes.

It's entirely possible though to use types of foods that are low GI and imaginatively combine them in ways you're familiar with cooking and eating.

I would strongly recommend this book despite the difficult recipes at the end. The remainder of the book is excellent and will be one which makes sense to anyone who reads it. May we all achieve / maintain our desired weight and be healthier in the process!

My little girl loves this book so much, she has asked me to read it over and over again. The book is beautifully written and illustrated. I am a professional writer and last summer interviewed one of my all-time favorite authors SARK for our local paper. SARK has written 15 books (and has over 2 million books in print) and she told me that she finds that a children's book is the hardest kind of book to write, because children see the truth in everything and are very discriminating. That said, Alice Flaherty captured the truth of a child's disgust for certain foods in such a humorous way and she ran with it...to make this a fascinating story for both young and old. I am going to buy this book as the holiday gift for all my friends with kids.

This book should be compulserary reading for caretakers. It can show how to deal with the stress and "burnout" of peole in all fields. I learned how better deal with my terminal illnes. Whereas, I do not agree with the later stages of the "bardo" ( the dying process of 40+ days) from the Tibetan / Buddhist point of view, all else was quite perffect. For one to impliment the suggestions in this book are , in my experience, guarenteed to ellivate an individuals ability to be compasionate toward life itself. Thank you, Tom J. This book is quite brief, and offers the reader a compact and concise overview of Tibetan Buddhism's approach to medicine, caregiving, and death. It is not necessary to be a Buddhist to gain insight from this book, and I wish I had had access to it years ago when I was caring for an ill relative. Should be purchased by libraries.

Medicine & Compassion is an important book. It should be required reading for physicians, medical students, nurses, caregivers, and hospice staff. Every family should have it on their bookshelf. Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, and even non-religious people will benefit from this book because the ideas are about the human condition which transcends all differences of faith. In a word, this book is a treasure.

We all grow old, get sick, and die. Impermanence, uncertainty, and sorrow permeate our very existence. Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and David R. Shlim, M.D., answer the important questions of why we get sick and to how to respond with compassion and mercy, when illness or impending death are at hand. One could say that it is a manual to understanding our own nature and mortality.

The narrative tone of the book is intelligent and merciful - never sugary or overdone. I could really feel the subtle, yet vibrant life energy of the book as it conjured forgotten images and feelings. It caused me to reflect on the end of life care that I administered for my parents and brother. I was able to see what was good and what was lacking in my care for them, without feeling a sense of regret. In fact, I gained a sense of optimism for the future.

As a writer on Buddhist healing, I found this to be a perfectly cut gem. Its words and inferences reflected the light of wisdom. I found it an invaluable tool for encouraging the sick and suffering. I was especially impressed with the author's end of life guidance in the chapter "Easing the Process of Dying." As a Buddhist for more than 30 years, I've read many works on death, dying, and the bardos. Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and Dr. Shlim explain this subject in a way that can satisfy the average person or the spiritually advanced. Most of all, the reader will be inspired to improve their own life and mind.

I highly recommend this book. Just as an outdoorsman needs a compass, so too can this book guide one in challenging times.

Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche is a highly-respected Tibetan lama who heads a large monastery in Nepal and has active Dharma centers in a number of Western countries
(see gomdeusa.org). He is a pure-hearted and open-minded teacher who indeed embodies the Buddhist ideal of compassion and wisdom combined. The ongoing "meetings of the minds" (the Mind and Life seminars with H.H the Dalai Lama being probably the best-known example), focussing on Mind and Meditation, are attracting wide interest; the theme of Mind, Meditation and Medecine may resonate even more, given the number of books appearing in that general area, of which this one is surely among the best.

Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and David Shlim have articulated beautifully an invaluable lesson in learning how to encompass compassion into our encounters with patients. As nurses and physicians we work with great dedication and energy to help our patients move toward a healthier state of being. The process sometimes seems very easy and gratifying however, sometimes we are stuck and not sure why. This book offers practical advice to the reader of how to more effectively approach each patient with kindness, wisdom and care. Since reading the book, I have noticed subtle changes in my own approach to patients and have felt a new energy and insight.

I found this book to be full of common sense suggestions; an excellent aid for me while I start my midlife!

Even more importantly, it has given me support while I adapt to the addition of my mother-in-law into our home.

I enjoyed the humor included in this book - if you can't laugh about life, then you haven't got a chance!

I found this to be an easy read and extremely insightful. I would definitely recommend it to everyone!

I enjoyed reading Midlife, A Manual. It covered many of the topics I am facing in my life as a 47 year old mother of four, with adult children leaving the nest, aging parents, retirement in the near future and investment planning. I enjoyed the humor and wit that softens the blows of life's harsh edges. The accounts of personal experience's were wonderful to read, it made me feel less isolated, knowing there are many of us facing these issues. The authors gave terrific useful information and step by step guidlines to take regarding the facing issues. It was a good read and gave helpful ideas.

I enjoyed reading Midlife -A Manual very much. The Estrine's have written a thoughtful, insightful work, covering all the major concerns that people have at mid-life - from the empty nest syndrome, establishing new relationships with grown children, dealing with elderly parents, financial planning, and sex. All of this is done in a clear concise and readable manner. The Estrines use anecdotes from their own lives, as well as personal interviews. This technique affords the reader the opportunity to personally identify with the concerns. Additionally, the Estrines offer practical exercises and points to ponder. I have read other books on this topic and found the Estrine's work by far the most well written and useful - a must for anyone going through the tr5auma of midlife!

This book written by long time professional home inspector Jeff May and his writer spouse Connie is a good introduction to mold problems in buildings, particularly homes. It combines an excellent narrative writing style, and unusual for a book that should appeal to many lay readers, a strong scientific understanding of mold, its growth requirements, its effects on human health, its detection in indoor spaces and ultimately its control. Jeff who I have known for over 20 years brings to this book many years (and of course many investigated buildings) of real-world experience with the scientific understanding to match. That is a rare combination. The book is a good read for the lay individual concerned about mold, the parent with a child with asthma, chronic sinusitis, or chronic non-seasonal allergy. It is also a good read for mold professionals of limited experience and those planning to enter the profession.

Wonderful book. Very sound, with current health information and then a step by step way to get healthier. The beauty is that it is user friendly and gives one both a reason to get healthier and a way to do it that isn't overwhelming. This book is very psychologically sound.....many of us resist action when the changes we have to make seem too difficult. The authors seem to know what we can comfortably do to make life changes and give us a way to do it and see results quickly (another thing we need to do fast!!!) The menus are easy to do for busy people!!

I found this book to be an easy read and very inspiring. I was motivated to get off my butt and start moving. It explains that we don't have to set records, just walk and be active for a few minutes every day. Well done!!

"Move Yourself" is a book that motivates you to do just that. Get up and move it! This is a friendly and very motivating book which allows you to feel positive about any level of exercise you're involved in.I have read so many books which made me feel that you MUST go for the marathon and if you didn't, well, you were just wasting your time. Let's face it, we're not all cut out to be marathon runners.
This book not only contains valuable health information in relation to exercise, but also has some great tips which can be used as you go about your daily life. By using a variety of these small and fun activities you can make a big difference in your mental and physical health, as well as, your overall well-being. When I exercise, I feel like the authors are cheering for me!

I'm an active guy and I found great tips here on how to hone my exercise program. But for sedentary people, this is powerful jumpstart information that will get them moving in a fun way that incorporates activity in their daily life. I'm getting the book as birthday gifts for my slacker friends.

An easy & practical way to bet back on track to good health with no effort!!

This book, along with a step counter, is the most
fabulous birthday gift you can give for sedentary
friends and relatives. The book tells you why you
better get moving OR ELSE and then shows you all the
fun ways of becoming physically active. I really
liked the way the program eases you into motion and
into higher gears.

This book deserves 10 stars! I am not overweight but bought this book in the interest of good health after reading Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. Prior to that, I was one of the many people out there who had totally bought into the popular notions of what constitutes a "healthy diet". I thought low-carb was a gimmicky fad. No more! This book is not a diet but a way of eating for life. Not only is Dr. Groves extremely knowledgeable and qualified, but he has a true gift for explaining the science in easy-to-understand English. It was tough to abandon my fears and pre-conceived notions about fats, but I must say that after following his recommendations I feel much better. I used to have lots of problems with hypoglycemia, snacking between meals (I just never felt full), and even a little extra flab around my middle. Now, the ups and downs are gone, I eat three solid (high fat) meals a day and have lost that belly fat. This is truly a fantastic book. His web site is also fabulous and contains more in-depth information on many of the concepts covered in the book.

In a world where every "nutritionist" seems out to make a quick buck ("Lose 20 lbs in 20 days!!"), Barry Groves REALLY knows his stuff, biologically and practically speaking. It's clear that this man has spent most of his life studying nutrition and biology. He can produce study after study after study and explain its what they mean. The guy even goes back to studying prehistoric man and archaeological finds re: nutrition. This book is nothing if not THOROUGH. I've made nutrition a hobby (studying it, as well as practical application of course!!) and read many books and textbooks on biology and nutrition, and this book is one few that I would actually recommend to anyone. You won't just learn about how to lose weight, but about how your body really works, and how to be healthy for life. I'm not interested in Atkins or Southbeach or some other commercialized "diet".... and this really isn't like that at all. You'll learn a lot, and the truth shall set you free.

Fascinating!

I was highly impressed with this book, and no doubt it is compelling reading. Above all, it is very accessible to the average reader who wants to dig deep into the "whys" and "wherefores" of low carb eating, all while absorbing an amazing array of detail. Mr. Groves appears to be under ratings attack on the net, and like Atkins and other revolutionary thinkers in the arena of low carb/high fat eating, the medical community still shuns these concepts. But medical credentials don't mean everything, and I'd say Barry Groves with his 40 years of study and personal experimentation and observation knows more on this subject than a hundred doctors collectively know. (Read: most doctors know virtually nothing about nutrition). While reading this book you can't help but be convinced by his very sound arguments for this way of eating. It all makes sense when you look at the data and examples he presents. I myself haven't yet implemented his precise recommendations, but I can say that my previous experience doing Atkins for about 6 weeks was amazing: I felt better than I'd ever felt (no grains, no dairy, no sugar) and I dropped weight effortlessly. There is something to this, no doubt about it. The only thing that still frightens me is the idea of possibly raising cholesterol etc. to higher levels. I guess I have a bit of trouble banishing my final degree of skepticism which I hold for all books on weight loss....Mr. Groves' ideas really do fly against the current thinking of most of the medical community, most of whom are sadly "in the dark" about nutritional issues beyond a very rudimentary level. Why should I believe anything they say? Look at the food pyramid! In any case, this really is one of the most fascinating books I have yet read in this subject area and I will be reading it more than once to absorb everything. Particularly if you are already committed to the idea of low carb eating as a way of life, this book greatly adds to your knowledge on the subject and will definitely strengthen your resolve to continue with this sort of diet for a lifetime of maintaining a healthy weight.

Dr. Groves Picks Up Where The Late Great Dr. Atkins Left Off

Another of the very few loud voices speaking out on behalf of a high-fat, low-carb diet in the UK is Dr. Barry Groves. With Dr. Atkins no longer with us, Dr. Groves has taken up the torch and carried it boldly and proudly for all the world to see. He's convinced that fat is not the source of our weight and health troubles--CARBOHYDRATES ARE! That's the underlying conclusion he shares in his book Natural Health & Weight Loss.

After years of researching, studying, writing, lecturing, and, most importantly, LIVING the low-carb lifestyle, Dr. Groves has a lifetime of experiences to share about how eating fat to replace carbohydrate in our diet will keep your body healthy, fit, and lean when a high-carb, low-fat diet fails you. He says people should eat more real food if they want to ward off the diseases that afflict so many people these days, namely obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Of course, all of his claims are backed up by the research and his more than four decades of personal and professional experience. In fact, you can even check out a thread at my LowCarbDiscussion.com forum dedicated to people following Dr. Barry Groves for lots of support and assistance as you implement these principles into your life. Dr. Groves has even been known to pop in to make comments and answer questions from time to time, too. Natural Health & Weight Loss is a book that you'll be proud to own and I cannot encourage you enough to get it, love it, and then LIVE IT!

Barry Groves is a fantastic author, presents the low-carb lifestyle with ease and simplicity. I recommend this be added to the library of anyone who is interested in, or lives the low-carb lifestyle.

This is a very good reference for nutrition freaks like me. It does contain a lot of practical examples, so it's much better than Dr. Atkins' book in that aspect.

I can not say enough great things about this book! I have recommended it to several doctors and to many of my patients.

I only wish that it was one of the rec'd reading texts at school. Any new doctor would benefit from reading this info, and because it limits it's scope to the 20 things you most commonly see in practice, it is both pertinant and memorable. The info can easily be assimilated into practice, and does not require excessive patient compliance.

For the layman, this is worth having in your library. Many of your chief complaints are not treated well wih traditional medicine, and this book gives you the info you need to treat yourself.

Highly readable book with good information for everybody.

As an osteopathic physician easing into the arena of nutritional medicine Dr. Firshein (another D.O.) gives some great guidelines for me to follow. I have started some of my more difficult patients on some of the nutrients that he wrote about and I have had some good results. Nutritional medicine is a complex and developing field that Dr. Firshein does an excellent job of clarifying his top 20 hits. I have not come across a better book in this field...including Dr. Weil's work.

SUPERB author!

This is a highly readable book, chock full of the latest research on a large range of neutraceuticals, and includes numerous anecdotes of Dr. Firshein's patients' firsthand experiences with the curative aspects of these nutraceuticals. Read this book if you have any interest in herbs and/or vitamins and nutritional therapies. THE NUTRACEUTICAL REVOLUTION contains fascinating accounts of the healing and restorative impact of many substances -- glutamine, milk thistle, quercetin, lutein, flaxseed, ginko --- just to name a few!

If you think you will always have to suffer with PMS - read this book. If you have been unable to lose weight - read this book. If exhaustion has become part of your everyday life - read this book. If your family has a history of heart disease, eye disease, diabetes, cancer or osteoporosis (to name a few), and your worried that you will eventually be next - read this book. The amazing information in this book details how Dr. Richard Firshein applies nutraceuticals to the vast range of conditions that he encounters every day in his practice. He explains how the systems in the body work, and how by matching specific nutrients to the needs of the body, also impacting on the mind and the emotions, we can achieve new levels of health, regain our health and prevent disease. Many of these nutrients are available in the foods that we eat, but if we become sick, the nutriceutical (concentrated) form can be the best way to regain health, since the quantities of food required would be taxing on our digestive systems.(That's just one of the reasons.) In addition, there are herbs that are not part of our daily diet that have a wide range of healing properties for specific illnesses. This book is a great way to become truly informed and knowledgeable about the multi-faceted, powerful, healing world of nutraceuticals, and how they can help you and those you love achieve good, and even great, health.
