I am in no way affiliated with the author or publisher of this book. I was just in the middle of recommending it to a friend and looked it up on Amazon, at which point, I figured I should add my own "two cents". Anyone who drinks, ever, regardless of how often, should be in possession of the knowledge contained in this manual. Not only does it eliminate hangovers, it stops the damage done by drinking. My high regard for this book is obvious; do yourself a favor and buy this book!

I do drink more than I should but I have no intention of quitting. I have been taking my vitamins like advised in this book. I can't say I feel any better or worse. I think the point is to NOT get sick, that would be the only way to know if it's working.
As for the person who said they have a drinking problem and need to abstain, the authur makes no qualms about the fact the book isn't suppossed to address these kind of problems. It is only to help you to drink as healthy as you can, if you choose to drink.
i'm glad I bought this book.

No, we aren't talking fairy tales. This is more a situation where someone a long time ago said something was true and its been repeated for so long that everyone believes it. Beyerlein explodes a few of these old wives tales along the way. Helpful charts tell you how long to wait after eating to begin drinking, what foods are okay to eat while drinking, what are liver killers and other helpful information. This book is intended to be a guide for drinkers. It isn't intended to help people who don't drink or want to quit, although some of the information on supplements would be good info for anyone. Loompanics has a real wide variety of books that they publish. Check out their site or call 8003802230.

The most informative book you can own if you drink. I drink often, so sometimes I over drink, the "life-force nutrients" (available at drugstores or health food stores) mentioned in this book can help you protect your health. This is not a book for those who need to stop drinking. If you are able to continue to drink, but still occasionally over-drink, this book can help your `day-afters'! I tell all my friends about this book. I enjoy wine, sometimes a little, sometime a lot, either way, I no longer loose a day because I had too much to drink the night before.

This book highlights that drinking can done in a safe manner, if you know how to do it. Let's face it, for all the "demonization" that occurs regarding alcohol, the medical community is increasingly admitting the positive health benefits of drinking (it reduces dangerous blood clots and thins the blood, thus preventing heart attacks and heart disease).

But I think it is funny how the medical community in the U.S. states that the maximum you should drink a day is two drinks if you are a man, and 1 if you are a woman. At the same time, the same medical community admits that alcohol has tremendous heart benefits, but that those heart benefits only kick in "at two drinks, minimum". So, according to the medical community, the minimum for health effects is two, which is - shazam ! - simultaneously the maximum you can allow yourself. Pardon me if That results in me not really believing them, and I think the author does a good job at highlighting the way they play with the statistics and data and conclusions.

My only caveat to this book is that I have done a lot of reading on milkthistle and other herbs that supposedly "protect the liver". From what I have read, for instance, such things as milkthistle are, at best, only moderately supported by evidence as to their "liver detox", or "liver-protecting" qualities. The studies that show that milkthistle protects the liver, are mostly very old, European studies that are not designed well. Also, stuff like licorice and artichoke is, as far as I have read, unproven in its liver-promoting qualities. (note: I have read one doctor who is a liver specialist say that dandelion, far from protecting the liver, can perhaps even hurt the liver !). [note that recent studies have shown one substance to really be protective of the liver, and that is coffee. There is now a lot of hard science that shows clearly that drinking 2+ cups of coffee a day protects the liver from cihrosis and liver cancer, and the more you drink [up to 4 cups], the more it protects !!].

Other than that caveat, I think that the idea of drinking water and taking vitamins are good ideas, and the book is full of a lot of good ideas. Also, the author has a lot of other good ideas about having "drink-free days", and treating the liver like a muscle in the sense that when you "overwork it", you have to "give it a rest". I think most doctors who are liver specialists would support that idea. My advice is read this book, but don't also try to pick up a book written by a doctor who is a liver specialist.

This book, like other books in the Eat Smart series, guides the reader/traveler through the food history, best dishes, and regional favorites of the country. I loved having this while in Morocco, because I had a good idea what to order wherever I went. The book also gives you the phrases you need to both read the menu and order. It's simply an invaluable guide for those who consider food a major part of the adventure of travel.

Joan Peterson, the culinary mistress of the EAT SMART series, returns to feed our continuing love affair with foreign foods and flavors in her latest book, Eat Smart in Morocco. As much a travel guide as it is a cookbook, Peterson shares her knowledge of the history and cultural significance of native dishes as well as the traditions and secrets of Moroccan cooks. Her culinary tribute to the land and its people should be part of an official welcome packet given to every foreign visitor when they first step on Moroccan soil. As she writes, "What better way to know a culture than through its cuisine." Particularly helpful to travelers are her bilingual menu, and food and flavor guides. Whether you're a novice or experienced traveler, Eat Smart in Morocco is the perfect reference for a memorable culinary journey. --Kimberly Ouhirra, President, Exotica Oils, Inc.

I've been a fan of Joan Peterson's "Eat Smart" series ever since I discovered "Eat Smart in Turkey" and "Eat Smart in Brazil" in the 1990s. Now Ms. Peterson has come out with a new guide to the foods and foodways of Morocco, a country whose history is reflected in its richly varied cuisine influenced by nomadic Berbers, Arab conquerors, Sephardic Jewish settlers, and French colonialists. As the author states in the Preface, "What better way to get to know a culture than through its cuisine?"

This highly informative book provides an overview of Morocco's history, an in-depth look at the country's national and regional foods, and a selection of Moroccan recipes from appetizers to desserts, with color photographs of many of the dishes. But "Eat Smart in Morocco" is much more than an introduction to the culinary cultures of this fascinating country. It's also a practical guidebook that you'll want to take along on your next trip to Morocco.

One chapter gives helpful phrases (with their pronunciation) for use in restaurants and food markets. An extensive Menu Guide lists menu items alphabetically, with a description of each dish, followed by a Foods & Flavors Guide with a comprehensive list (and explanation) of Moroccan ingredients, spices, kitchen utensils, and cooking terminology. An extensive bibliography and very good index round out this book.

"Eat Smart in Morocco" is an indispensable companion for the intelligent traveler who is interested in that country's foods-and for anyone who wants to know what, and how, to eat in a Moroccan restaurant. Don't go to Morocco without it! Highly recommended. ----- Sharon Hudgins, author of "The Other Side of Russia: A Slice of Life in Siberia and the Russian Far East"

"Eat Smart in Morocco" uses significant historical facts to trace the rich culinary treasures of Morocco and its land. Readers can become more familiar with the culture and civilization through this guidebook and delight themselves with recipes from various contributors. The guidebook confirms that we can touch the heart of another culture through the flavors of its food and experience a gastronomic journey.

This book is one of a type I was not familiar with: books for travelers who are also "foodies", that is, people for whom trying the local food is one of their main pleasures while traveling.

This book will let foodies explore Morocco's rich and unique cuisine in thier homes before leaving via descriptions of both the food and its context, and it even provides recipes to try first. Once in Morocco, there is a directory of regional cuisine, and a menu guide with transliterated Arabic names of dishes to help in ordering. I find Moroccan food some of the world's best and most varied, and this book makes it accessible to everyone.

I've traveled and worked in Morocco off and on for the last 35 years, and can attest that the recipes and descriptions are well-researched and accurate. Readers should enjoy this book, as a travel guide or as a 'virtual' trip to Morocco.

Absolutely the best book on health available today

If you care about living long and well, this is the book for you. When I saw it at my local bookstore it literally jumped off the shelf. You can't always judge a book by its cover, but in this case the contents lived up to the promise on the jacket, "What Really Determines How Long You Live."
There are many things that I could say about this exceptional book. The most important is that at a time when we are deluged by the latest hype on health and happiness, this book, by one of the premier researchers in the country, gives us the real facts about holistic health.
I've been working in this field for 38 years and consider myself one of the experts, but I learned new things in every chapter.
At a time when Gender Medicine is emerging as a new field of health, this book gives us the facts to help us understand why men continue to live sicker and die sooner. It doesn't have to be that way. We can all improve how long and how joyfully we live.
If you buy one book this year on Mind/Body/Spirit, make it Emotional Longevity. You'll be glad you did.
I have been working in the area of Gender Medicine and writing books on men's health for the last 35 years. Among the 7 books I have written, Male Menopause has been a best-seller and has now been translated into 16 foreign languages. My new book, The Irritable Male Syndrome will be published next year.

What one should take from this book is that health means balance is all areas of one's life. We are social animals and obviously our emotional well-being influences our longevity. A great book!

An eye-opening look at the synergy between emotions and longevity. In the deluge of "let's just be happy" rather superficial books, this one is a refreshing departure from that norm.

Written by a leader in his field, Dr. Anderson does not negate the biological determinants affecting longevity. But drawing on his work as the CEO of the American Psychological Association as well as numerous studies, he paints a compelling picture of the actual links between emotions, beliefs and one's social environment and their effect on one's health and subsequent death. He also cites the many studies that show how these same factors influence our vulnerability to everything from the common cold to heart disease. The book is written in an understandable style and features vignettes of prominent people, such as Maya Angelou, Terry Fox and Linda Ellerbee to add a more personal touch to his scientific presentations and findings.

This is a book that will give you a most compelling reason to try and change your life and your way of living. It can indeed be a matter of life or death or at the very least a significant factor in the quality of your life.

Emotional Longevity explores the dimensions of health and well being in a unique and refreshing way. Though based on research, it offers a refreshing (and understandable) perspective differentiating it from other books of this genre. It clearly defines and illustrates how each of the elements affecting longevity play out in our lives and in the lives of our children. It juxtaposes science with vignettes, making it not only informative but compelling as well. It is an insightful and contemplative "must read."

...

When I picked this book up, I thought for sure that there was nothing else to be learned, but I was completely wrong. For once, this book is backed by scientific research and the results are shown for experiments such as positive and negative outlooks, overcoming illness, likelihood to die early, the list goes on and on. 'Emotional Longevity' does not indicate the length of an emotion, but rather teaches us to view things in a light that will produce a much higher quality of life, and will ultimately lead to a much healthier, longer, and more fulfilling, realistic lifestyle. I know it sounds cliche, but it's true. And it's different from all the others to boot.

Highly recommended from a person who highly needs good books like this. :) (Who doesn't?)

I've had this book for MONTHS and I still discover chapters I haven't seen before! *LOL* I swear, this little baby has so much information packed into it I would find it exceptionally hard to NOT something great about it. And it IS great, you can find just about anything in here and the recommendations are GOOD.

The book has hundreds of pages, and the pages are printed very thin. Normally this would be a two or three volume boook set if were printed with the usual type of paper. It is well worth the money - no doubts about that! But do make sure your bookshelf is strong, too. Because this book is *heavy!* :)

Don't pass this up, FANTASTIC book.

The book is well written and unlike most books I've read, incorporates a multifaceted approach to self improvement. It teaches us to love appreciate and ourselves unconditionally, celebrating our beauty both inside and out. I disagree, however, with some of the advice found in the last chapter of the book on "spiritual power". Although the tips are well-intended, I believe they strayed too far in the religious direction. According to this book, one must know that God's "a given" and the truth that "We are all connected to the omnipotent, omnipresence called the Creator." In my opinion, this book could have remained more secular in this respect.

A Book for Every Woman

EVERY WOMAN'S YOGA is a book written for Every woman...young...old...skinny...plump...rich...poor...of color...white..

As a nurse-midwife and nurse-practitioner in women's health, I have come to appreciate the beauty in each and Every Woman and also how the practice of yoga can enhance that inherent beauty. Since the completion of my training, 15 years ago, I have been waiting for a book I can offer to ALL women. I feel EVERY WOMAN'S YOGA is this book. It is a book for the woman accomplished in yoga as well as for the woman who thinks yog(urt) is something you eat for desert.

One of EVEWRY WOMAN'S YOGA's greatest features is that it takes you skillfuly step-by-step from where you currently are in your yoga practice toward greater accomplishiment. A basic posture is first introduced and then a more challenging or an easier variation is given, allowing a woman to adjust her practice daily and thus continually progress. The author also intertwines these progressive steps in flexibility with the breath...the ultimate link between the mind and the body.

Another great feature of EVERY WOMAN'S YOGA is the author's encouragement for the woman to create her own practice...gone are the days of sitting isolated in a classroom for hours at a time...from feeling you missed the ship if you didn't get in that morning practice. NOW are the days of incorportating the practice into the whole day..doing pranayam while out for a walk....the pelvic tilt while waiting for the bus...agni sara in the the lunch line. HELLO MODERN YOGINIS!!!

The most valuable asset, however, is the continual references the author makes to the deeper aspects of yoga philosophy and training. These teachings encourage the woman to explore challenges in her ongoing spiritual journey. So while on the surface, the book seems to be dedicated only to yoga postures, it is really leading a woman on a deeper path.

If you have not read this book, I whole heartedly encourage you to give yourself a treat for the holidays !!!(and the rest of your life).

I got the book because of her impressive credentials and a friend's recommendation. I keep it on the top of my stack of yoga books because of how I feel about myself and my practice when I read it.

Clear, generous, thorough, accessible, fun... I am so impressed with what Dr. Schmitt has done with this book. There's such a wealth of information here (especially compared to the "coffee table" type yoga books that seem to be propogating in the bookstores now), yet her book is somehow light - easy to read and apply.

Even more than that, she guides the reader into the self healing world of spontaneous movement where the wisdom of the body becomes the inner teacher. No other book on yoga has done anything like that. This book is unique and self empowering.

I have tried many of the recipes in the cookbook and found them to be excellent. The recipe for the granola bars was a big hit with everyone who has eaten them. The peanut butter brownies did not turn out very well since I may have used some old cocoa. My wife is picking out new recipes from this book every day, and I have to say that this is a surprisingly consistent book when it comes to "light" fare. Most "healthy" cookbooks either contain only one or two winners, or have such delicious fare like sprouts and lima bean brownies. In this book, some recipes have been better than others, but all recipes so far have been good, and best of all, I've lost 30 lbs in the last 2 1/2 months! Granted, I've been working out as well, but I can honestly say this book has definitely had an impact on my weight loss!

This book is a must-have for any caregiver of a person with Type I (Juvenile) diabetes. It includes straight-forward, no-nonsense facts that are written in everyday terms. It is obvious that the author knows from reality what she is writing about, not just from a text book.

Probably the best compliment I can make is to say that I wish I had this book when my son was diagnosed!

So impressed with this book!

As a parent of a newly diagnosed child, I just bought this book and I am half way through reading it. It is so informative, so easy to read and seems to contain information on every aspect of dealing with type 1 diabetes. It gives references to other books and places. My husband, who hates to read, also is reading and indicated that it is a quick read with valuable information. The author comes through as so genuine and you truly feel like you are getting help from a friend. I highly recommend this book.

This brilliant well written book really is the everything guide for parents with children with diabetes. The book addresses many issues that will help all parents to raise a healthy well adjusted child with diabetes. The newly diagnosed section is a great resource for a parent that is a new caregiver. Recently I recommended the book to a mom of a newly diagnosed child. She felt that Ms. McCarthy was with her in the hospital during the diagnosis, and the tips she gave were right on!

The book also addresses topics for veteran caregivers, addressing such topics as diabetes and teens, teens and diabetes burnout. It also will help the experienced parent keep a fresh approach to diabetes management The tip sections throughout the book are very helpful and informative for all caregivers. This book should be on the bookself of every parent who cares for a child with diabetes.

Wonderful Resource, well written!

Dr. Abel is an expert in natural ophthalmology and really seems to know his stuff. If you're interested in maintaining excellent vision and eye health for your entire life, primarily through diet and supplementation, read this book. I showed it to my optometrist who hopped on his computer and ordered it on the spot!

I had a near-debilitating eye burn accident a month ago and I went through a series of opthamologists who couldn't answer a majority of my questions regarding the recovery of my eyesight. To complicate matters I had LASIK surgery that was affected by the burn accident and no-one could tell me anything. Until I read this book; this book provided me with holistic and scientific approach to treating and supplementing my treatment. From supplements to herbs, this book provided me a complete approach to the healing process. I am now near 90% visual acuity and because I can now read, I've began a lifelong process of eye health care that will help me in the future.

This book is the most informative and in plain english that anyone can understand. If you are a person who believes in Herbs and natural cures, than this is the book for you. I first got the book from my library for my husband who has bleeding vessels in both of his eyes. We read it and then decided it was too excellent not to purchase and keep in our personal library. We purchased the herbs that were recommended for this condition and also went a little further with other herbs. There is some improvement (after only 3 weeks). Dr Abel, the author is an excellent Doctor and has the gift to be able to relate information on all levels of understanding. This book is worth every penny and more. You won't be disappointed if you are considering this purchase.

***************************************************************** BACKGROUND

I am a 32-year old chemistry Ph.D. student who this past fall was told that retinas in both eyes had detached.

I underwent surgery and got the "best possible" surgical result; however, this is not the same as what my vision had been before. At that point, I was told that since they didn't know why this (retinal detachment) happened that there was no guarantee that it wouldn't happen again.

I am extremely lucky that I stumbled upon Dr. Abel's book by accident in a local bookstore -- it has profoundly changed my life for the better. I am now at (...) to buy extra copies for friends and relatives.

ONE OF THE BEST HEALTH BOOKS EVER!

This is one of three of the most important health books I have run across in my life. (The other two are nutritionally-related -- "Entering the Zone" by Barry Sears,Ph.D., and "The Formula" by Gene & Joyce Daoust, and provide information on how to use diet to minimize illness and maximize longevity. These books well-complement this book and are of a similar holistic mindset.)

Dr. Abel, a U.S.-trained ophthalmologist (M.D.), has embraced the wisdom of non-Western medicine in his search to find ways to treat eye problems that Western medicine claims are "untreatable" and by so doing HAS FOUND SOLUTIONS TO MOST COMMON EYE PROBLEMS, WHICH HE HAS SHARED IN THIS BOOK.

Also typical of a non-Western approach, this book takes a holistic view -- showing that several other conditions can also accompany eye problems.

For example, before reading this book, I never recognized that arthritis and dry eyes commonly occur together (they are both collagen "diseases" which, in retrospect, makes a lot of sense) and that successfully treating one will also help lessen the severity of the other.

MOST EYE PROBLEMS ARE DUE TO INADEQUATE DIET & SO PREVENTABLE

The core message of this book is that most eye problems are the result of nutritional (specifically, vitamin/supplement) deficiencies.

ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK

A general background on the eye if first given to provide a foundation to the layman, clearly explaining eye structure and basic function. (This background would probably be accessible to the average person who doesn't have a scientific background.)

Successive chapters build on this foundation as they each address one of the most common eye diseases, e.g. glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, dry eyes, etc. At the end of each chapter is given a summary of what vitamins you can take to prevent/halt the progression of that particular eye problem.

The vitamins/supplements recommended are mostly available in your local grocery store's vitamin aisle -- you don't have to make a special trip to someplace exotic. (Also, a lot are common enough that there are generic versions available, which makes this easier for people on a limited budget.)

HOW THIS BOOK WAS USEFUL TO ME (& HOW IT COULD BE USEFUL TO YOU TOO)

Although the final step leading to my retinas detaching was the mechanical tearing of the retina, this book made me realize that the precursor was the weakening of the collagen in both my blood vessels and in the eye structure itself and that these were to vitamin deficiencies. (This book calls retinopathy "scurvy of the retina".)

Some of the solutions recommended in the book for this, e.g. bilberry and vitamin C, are vitamins/supplements known to strengthen collagen and other tissues.

I have taken multivitamins everyday and so would not have initially guessed that I have had a vitamin deficiency. But, after comparing the amounts in the multivitamin to the amounts recommended, I see that I did have one. (Remember you use up a lot of vitamins when you are under stress! :-) )

THIS BOOK IS EMPOWERING!

After reading this book, I realize that I have the power to prevent my eye condition from worsening just by taking a few more vitamins and supplements a day. This is a very easy way to significantly improve the quality of your life.

I am extremely grateful to Dr. Abel for writing this book and giving me the ability to take back my life again.

ONE SMALL CRITICISM: WHY NOT A LARGE-PRINT EDITION?

My only possible complaint is that a book on eye problems needs to be available in a large-print edition so that the bulk of people who need this book might actually be able to read it themselves.

Feed Your Family Right! offers the best of two worlds: practical advice from a real-world mom combined with a well-considered, scientifically- grounded framework for success.

Many diet and exercise books assume we all have three hours a day to train and have the knowledge and discipline to eat a perfect diet.

Zied, however, does a terrific job of balancing the everyday demands of work and family with the goal of raising healthy children and being healthy ourselves.

Feed Your Family Right! is a very readable book. I enjoyed reading it, have already put its advice to work and have given it as a gift to my wife for the holidays so that we can both be on the same page!

As a new mom and a registered dietition myself I am always looking for great nutrition advice that applies to real life for my family and my clients. This book is filled will wonderful information that targets families and even specifies the needs for specific subgroups like babies, teens, men and women. It even addresses pregnancy needs. After reading this book I started recommending it to my clients that are in charge of their families diet and need a good at home resource. I love that it is written by a registered dietition who is trained to provide tis advice rather than other authors of books that are trying to push a fad diet or quick fix plan. It is simply a "must have" for any family trying to take charge of their health.

I'm a registered dietitian in Connecticut, and I've read Zied's book. In fact, I make it a point to keep up with all her work in the media--whether on paper, the Internet, or national TV--because she's one-of-a-kind and truly a gifted nutrition expert. I counsel patients privately, and I encourage them to read Feed Your Family Right! because I know it will help their families. What family doesn't need a positive boost with eating better? Food should be good to eat and healthful. This book will help you with that.

A must read for family nutrition

As a new family with a young child, we have obsessively been trying to educate ourselves about how to create a healthier and more nutritious household and family lifestyle. My husband and I recently found Mrs. Zied's book, and it struck so many chords with us. It is so obvious from the anecdotes and insights, that Elisa is speaking from her own vast experience, not just her own obviously immense expertise.

The book covers so many aspects of nutrition and age groups, that we were able to share her advice with our parents, siblings, children and even our grand parents. The section focusing on health conditions that can be addressed with proper diet was invaluable. For any family trying to establish a "plan" for healthy living, this is a "must read."

Zied's meal plans and recipes also made implementing her ideas so much easier - but, also in a much more flexible manner than most nutrition programs.

Elisa's style manages to mix in many humorous and interesting anecdotes, while imparting important messages. But, unlike many other nutrition books, she did this without being "preachy" or cretaing a difficult read. Frankly, this was one of the easiest books to digest (no pun intended...) of any in its genre. We're so impressed by these insights that we've already bought Zied's other book "So What Can I Eat?!" hoping to add to our knowledge base.
