What a wonderful book! What you can tell about someone just by what chocolate they choose (and what they do with the wrapper afterwards...) Everyone I've shared the book with has loved their personality type descriptions and most agree that they fit! Gorgeous photos too. Makes me hungry for more chocolate...

Aaaaahhhh the deep mysteries of the human psyche are explained now through Chocolate Therapy. The chocolate photography is enough on its own for this book to be a *must have* for any true chocolate afficionado. However, the divinatory comments are wonderfully insightful. Do not make the mistake of taking this book too lightly! This book makes an excellent birthday/festive season gift.

Until something better is written, this is THE book on the subject. Those who have reviewed this book before me have said it all, but I would add that Lerner is a writer of exceptional talent. At times reading this book is liking reading poetry or great inspirational prose and it is often quite moving.

As a pediatric oncologist with a special interest in the use of complementary medicine in cancer, I've read many books on this topic; and I must say this is the best so far. Dr Lerner is objective, knowledgeable, and writes well. His passion for the field, and his compassion for cancer patients show through. I would recommend anyone who intends to explore the use complementary medicine in cancer to start off with this book.

Deep, excellent.

Now in paperback, this is the book to send your friends with cancer. Its wide-ranging, patiently and caringly written, scholarly but accessible, and chocked with interesting references and good insights. Michael Lerner has taken it upon himself to do a thorough 'work-up' on the best of that heterogeneous lot of hearsay cures and popular supplemental treatments that cancer patients will start hearing about from friends, relatives and distant acquaintaces practically as soon as they are diagnosed. Choices in Healing gives one a way to start sorting it out.

Lerner strives for, and I feel achieves, an excellent balance between optimism and skepticism as he covers (a) the different "cultures" of conventional treatment - aggressive, gentle, U.S., European, Japanese, (b) spiritual approaches, (c) nutritional approaches, (d) physical and energetic approaches, (e) non-conventional herbal and pharmacological approaches. Stanislaw Burzynski, Virginia Livingston, Joseph Gold and Emanuel Revici, are some of the famous off-range cure inventors that he dignifies with his patient research.

I also found his chapters on the spiritual and psychological dimensions of the cancer journey especially strong. He takes the reader up to death's door. And beyond. The chapter on pain is a revelation.

Highly recommended for anyone.

Scepticism and optimism combined

First a word about me: I'm one of those cancer patients who doctors either love or hate. I read up on everything, and I am openminded about the benefits and risks of both conventional and alternative cancer therapies. I question everything and want to understand where the limits of our current understanding lie. I want references!

If you are anything like me, you'll appreciate the exceptionally fine balance that Michael Lerner draws. He honestly investigates the extent to which various cancer therapies work, mostly by reviewing "serious" research which examines cancer treatment from different angles. In areas where scientific studies contradict each other, he doesn't draw unfounded conclusions. He manages to give specific guidelines for dealing with cancer without advocating any one therapy too much.

Of the many books I've read on cancer, this is the one I appreciate the most. The tone of the book is honest, warm and caring; personal without being sentimental. And best of all, it inspires hope.

The one caveat I have is that I'd love to see a revised edition with all the newest research reviewed! If you're considering a purchase, do a websearch for "Lerner" and "Choices in Healing", this should provide you with a reference to an online version of the whole book. Once you're convinced, buy the book!

For the most part, I am enjoying this book. The diet is based on the food pyramid, and the exercise program has do-able daily choices. My only complaints are the following: First, the page quality is very poor. I felt like I had to be really careful turning the pages or they would tear. Second, some of the exercise photos show very poor form, like knees extending past ankles is lunges. All in all, it's a good book.

If you want a no nonsense fitness plan to follow then this book is for you! This book contains a large menu section that covers breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. I really liked the fact that it listed the recipes for many of the meals. There are three levels of exercise plans including stretches. Absolutely everything is spelled out for you, there is no guesswork. You can say goodbye to calorie counting, pre-packaged meals and supplements. The bottom line is: This book works.

An excellent book! I found this to be the most comprehensive, informative and easy to understand health-related book I've ever read. It refocuses the long-time emphasis away from weight control and calorie counting to the real health problem facing millions of Americans: Fat. It clearly defines the problem and the best way to tackle it. Not only does it include lots of exercises designed to fight fat, it also devotes many pages to nutrition, diet, menus and the psychology of improving over-all health by reducing the percentage of fat in ones body. It's the kind of book you can continually refer to. It's already helped me look and feel better. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to avoid fad diets and deceptive weight-loss schemes.

One of the best things about this book is it has several programs designed for the beginner, intermmediate, and advanced fitness levels. This book has something for everyone, whether you are looking to become a Navy SEAL, or just the average Joe who wants to increase their level of fitness. Most of these exercises can be done at home as well, utilizing little to no equipment. The DVD is also an added bonus for those not familiar with the exercises. I feel this is one of the best books on fitness available today.

I've read over this book and I love it. Unlike other Navy Seals book, it doesn't insult you. It encourages you to try out new stuff and to keep doing them. I personally love the section about swimming. I've been swimming sidestroke and freestyle for quite a while in preparations for my 5k run-swim-run this summer. I also plan to do a 13.1 miles run while will help out greatly. I really want to try the rope climbing exercise. However, I'm having trouble locating a rope to climb. I saw some ropes at Little Creek but I don't know if people can just use them whenever.

Overall, the book is very neat. It shows you pictures and instructions on how to do the proper sets. The book even has a "plan" in the back. It goes over everything from stretches, pushups, pull ups, swimming, running, and rope climbing. It's all very clear and very good.

I personally don't know if this book will prepare you for actual training for special operations. I do know that they are fun to do and the author is fairly nice about it. He doesn't insult you and he goes about to encourage you by knowing that not everyone who reads the book will be "SEAL material."

Another book I recommend is U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition by U.S. Navy. It's very informative and it breaks into two sections: fitness and nutritional advice.

I like this book a lot. First of all, the authors have proper credentials (a lot of authors don't, even some celebrity diet gurus). One author is an M.S./R.D. who works as a nutritionist; the other is an M.D. who works with weight loss/obesity. For those of you looking for a quick fix, I'm sorry, you won't find it here! This is an informative, sensible guide to eating healthfully and losing weight gradually (c'mon, we all know that diets don't work). This book explains why you want to eat healthfully -- which nutrients your body needs, and how you can get them. In addition, it stresses the importance of exercise and makes you want to get moving. The authors don't expect you to never again eat junk food, but call for including it occasionally in a balanced, planned way of eating. Another thing I liked was the fact that this book addresses psychological issues as well -- it makes you examine why you eat, and includes a lot of motivational help. Note to vegetarians: Your needs are addressed throughout.

Another winner from Cooking Light! This cookbook contains all of the recipes from the 2001 magazines, and the front section highlights the editors' favorite recipes from the year. The first few pages offer pictures of these 5-star dishes and information on where those recipes can be found in the book. In my experience, the editors' picks are always the best recipes.

We've made lots of great dishes from this book, including an knock-out pasta with proscuitto and peas, a roasted corn and tomato tart, and the beef with rosemary mushroom sauce. One caveat - sometimes, Cooking Light portions tend to run on the small side. Keep an eye on this if you're counting calories or fat based on the nutritional information included with each recipe.

I'm a Cooking Light subscriber, and I make dishes featured in the magazines as they come out. Because I don't have the space to store tons of magazines, I transfer my recipe notes to the cookbook when it comes out at the end of the year. I end up with a cookbook full of tasty, heathly recipes that are enhanced by notes I've made about our personal preferences for each dish. Yum!

The Cooking Light website has this same book for only $31.46. I'm not sure why it is so much here. This is a great book because it allows you to keep one year's worth of magazine recipes in an organized way-no folded down corners and searching for that certain recipe. I would recommend it to anyone that is trying to keep their meals low in fat but with some taste left. Take a look and enjoy your cooking.

I absolutely love this book. I have always loved baking but was not very interested in cooking. This book changed the way I think about cooking. The recipes inspired me to be more conscious about eating healthier and encouraged me to try new things. The dishes include a variety of ingredients and if you follow the monthly chapters, you can select recipes which include ingredients that are in season. The best thing is the recipes aren't heavy and fattening, so you can use it every day. I pick 3-4 recipes each week and base my grocery shopping off the required ingredients. I can't say enough nice things about this cookbook and many of my friends have requested recipes based off the meals I have prepared for them.

Fixes a lot of myths, a must have for Dr's and smart people

This is defintely an overall positive book on a very negative topic. The author here explains a lot of different ways that you can get the serotinin back to normal without having to deal with drug therapy.

The one problem about this book is that at times it is hard to get thru. The author throws in a lot of information that I'm sure a lot of us wont understand. I wish it was just a little more simplified. FOr example, in one chapter, he explains how a vitamen b6 can be more effective then an antidepresent in treating severe depression. However, he doesnt list the dosage or the amount of vitamen b6 that might be required to take. (that can be a bit of a problem for some).

Yet, this book is amazingly written, anaylized, and hopeful. Its good to know that someone really researched all of these facts and figures. He had a much different outlook on the whole deal as he broke down several vital stastics that the mass media and drug conpanies would never want to admit.

Despite its uplifting appeal, This is more of a book for a professional therapist rather then a client. I'd suggest for the client to read some important parts of this book to the therapist. A lot of this information is complicated and since Syd doesn't list the dosages and the "How exacltys" to get rolling on the correct bandwagon. Almost all of these methods are hard to persue solely.

But again this is a good book and I hope it gets more recongition then it has gotten in drugged america.

Excellent Book!

As a psychologist wanting my clients to be educated on the biochemistry of depression and possible solutions, I have found this to be the best of all the alternatives I have read. It discusses all the treatments rather than focusing on one alone, as many books do. It is well written, easy to understand, and treats the reader as if he or she is intelligent enough to grasp a good deal of information. I think this book would help everyone in therapy, and would also help therapists in their attempts to help.

THE book on depression

Review Date: 2006-03-21
If you're looking to treat depression without using drugs, this is the book to get. The book is packed with almost every type of therapy known to cure depression. If there's any academic research on the subject, Baumel mentions the study and also tells us whether it's an uncontrolled or controlled study (something I appreciate as an academic). He usually explains how the study was conducted in enough detail that it can be replicated at home. This means that he included supplement dosages and length of time needed to see results. He also mentions how to purchase St. John's Wort and light therapy devices, which could save hundreds of dollars.

The way to use this book is to read the therapy, see if it matches your symptoms, decide whether you're willing to make the commitment (e.g., am I willing to take B6 for the next 6 months?), and then to try it. I had to try several different therapies until I found ones that worked for me. If one didn't work for me, I would read another section of this book and choose a new therapy to try. One problem with the book is that it covered some therapies in limited detail, and sometimes I needed to look up additional information in other sources.

Before getting this book, I tried looking up information online, but there was too much noise rather than real information to get any use out of what I was reading. This book cut through the noise and gave a concise summary of therapies that I could use to help myself.

In summary, the book is well-researched and an excellent resource. Using this book plus some free online information, I cured my moderate chronic depression in three months without drugs. Thank you, Syd Baumel, for writing this book!

Forget about "touchy feely" talk about herbal remedies. If you're a skeptic, this book will change your mind about St. John's Wort and what BRAND you buy. Covers a staggering number of therapies in great detail: some you probably know like electric shock therapy, Prozac and cognitive therapy. Other lesser known therapies include Omega-3, 5-HTP, SAM-e, and Tyrosine. The author did his homework. Citing numerous clinical trials, studies, and on-line news groups, I found this reading a bit overwhelming or too dry at times, but only because of the author's thorough investigation. All in all, it was well worth it. Makes your doctors sit up and take notes when you talk about how YOU want to treat your depression. (that alone is worth it). An excellent reference that grows with you as your treatment for depression evolves.

While the scope of the book is "for men", I found much of the content was for any diabetic, a man or a woman. The chapters for the men I found created in me an awareness and empathy to these unique results of the disease to the male body.

Interested in researching your disease? Juliano has done a great deal of the work in researching diabetes and application to daily life. This is packed with information based on his personal research.

I plan to keep it as part of my reference library, even if I am a "lady".

Joe Juliano has done the diabetic male community a tremendous service. He has written about the history, treatment, and complications of diabetes in language understandable to the layman. He has given down-to-earth advice on diet, vitamins, exercise, and home blood glucose monitoring that is vital to health maintenance, and he has dealt with subjects not often talked about, like the health of the diabetic foot, male baldness, and erectile dysfunction. Above all he stresses the importance of positive thinking and the necessity for the diabetic, in conjunction with his medical team, to take control of the management of his disease. This is indeed an essential guide to living well for the male diabetic."

Excerpts from a letter from Dr. John P. Cooke, MD., Ph.D., to the author. Dr. Cooke is an Associate Professor of Medicine and is the Director, Section of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine:

...I have to tell you that I learned a great deal. I read your book at one sitting, on a flight today to give a talk in the Midwest. I learned a few things from you which I will begin to incorporate into the care of my diabetic patients, and into my advice to my diabetic father.

I found most touching the passages describing your own struggle with diabetes, and quite compelling your anecdotes regarding friends and patients with diabetes. In your next book, these anecdotes should be increased in frequency throughout the text to improve readability for the lay person.

This book is a tour de force, and I congratulate you. I look forward to the sequel...

Chapter 12 is outstanding. I was transfixed by the description of your personal experience with a severe diabetic complication...

I enjoyed your section on nutrition and dietary supplements. You may wish to expand this section, and perhaps work with a dietician on some suggested menus for diabetic patients.

I enjoyed your chapter on diabetic impotence, and chapter on diabetic feet...

Joe, congratulations on a superb book. I admire your drive to help others with diabetes, and your tenacity to complete this book. Thanks again for allowing me to read it. I will recommend it to my diabetic patients.

Dr. Juliano's book was quite a pleasant surprise for me. This book covers an array of very important diabetic issues that are discused in a very intelligent format. Dr. Juliano is an Endocrinologist and a diabetic himself. This first hand experience from the age of 15 allows Dr. Juliano to share personal knowledge based on his own trial and error. The discussion of new and alternative treatment methods is what makes this book great. Dr. Juliano incorporates traditional western medicine with Nutrition and Acupuncture. By pointing out that Western medicine, Nutrition, and Acupuncture should be used together to improve a condition is a quantum leap for health care. Unfortunately most medical doctors have no understanding of nutrition and proper vitamin/mineral supplementation. This lack of knowledge limits the treatment options medical doctors offer us. It is quite refreshing to read a book by a medical doctor that addresses alternative medicine. This book is a wonderful compilation of the healing arts! "Remember, you live in your body and you do not have to make drastic changes in order to feel good about yourself." With these words, Stutman sets the tone for his latest book on diet and exercise for women. Diet-Step: 20 Grams/20 Minutes is a positive, encouraging book written with a woman's physiological makeup and special concerns in mind.

In the first section, Stutman describes the Diet-Step plan, a low-fat and high-fiber diet that provides a well-balanced, varied selection of foods. He explains the dangers of fad diets and offers both quick weight-loss and maintenance eating plans. He suggests that readers eat no more than twenty grams of fat and no less than twenty grams of fiber daily at the beginning of the program, with small increases on the maintenance plan. The "Fat and Fiber Counter" in the middle of the book is an excellent quick reference to supplement the eating plans.

In the second section, Stutman outlines the Fit-Step plan, which consists of at least twenty minutes of walking or other aerobic exercise each day, and the Trim-Step plan to firm up muscles. He describes the effects of exercise on weight, health, appearance, and overall quality of life. He translates hours exercised into calories burned and is careful to point out safety issues for exercisers.

Stutman's medical expertise and research background are obvious throughout this book. For example, he urges the reader to assume a healthy eating lifestyle rather than to "go on a diet." He explains the body's attempts to conserve fat when a person adheres to an overly restrictive diet, the psychology of the binge eating/dieting cycle, and the importance of combining eating well with vigorous exercise. Stutman bases the eating and exercise plans on the most current research about metabolism and exercise physiology.

The use of underlining for emphasis in some parts of the book is distracting, but it is balanced by an informal writing style. Subtitles such as "Fearsome Fats," "Dangerous Dieting," and Women Who Sat Didn't Burn Fat" are amusing, as are the cartoons that illustrate the text. The overall tone of the book is relaxed and enjoyable, yet authoritative. The greatest strength of Diet-Step: 20 Grams/20 Minutes is that it is more than a diet and exercise book. It is a tool for healthy living.

Dr. Stutman offers a new book on weight loss. The basis of the book - 20 Grams of fat a day, 20 minutes of walking a day - is basic common sense. However, Dr. Stutman writes in an engaging manner, keeping the pages turning as he slips in a lot of useful information.

There are sample menus to stay on track with the proper distribution of fat, protein and carbohydrates. Dr. Stutman goes over the fiber content in various foods, the different types of fat, how veggies are full of all sorts of good stuff and help fight disease...I could go on, but this book is worth reading to find out for yourself.

The other focus in this book is exercise. Dr. Stutman goes over the various types of aerobic exercise, though he spends the most time on his registered Fit-Step Program. Fit-Step is about walking, though the category is rather broader than that since dancing is one type of "Step."

For a common sense approach to weight loss, good health and a plan that can last a lifetime, I recommend DIET-STEP 20/20 FOR WOMEN ONLY!

The Doctor's easy 2-step quick weight-loss & fitness plan is based on the 20 fat grams/20 fiber grams theory. It features a 20 minute walking program in conjunction with strength training exercises and a no-calorie counting eating plan.

The program is geared to developing a healthy life style for women that also helps reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes, osteoporosis, hypertension, depression and certain types of cancer.

If you've tried everything and nothing has worked, try this. It's healthy and you may discover the secret to a more beautiful (or handsome) and healthy you.

This guy is going to help bring about a much needed revolution in medicine. He is probably the single most knowledgable person I've ever listened to and his heart is in the right place. The CD's are well worth twice what they cost.

Originally I thought this guy looked crazy and was too Spiritual and weird for me to learn from.

Then I listened and found out he is a medical genius and probably will revolutionize medicine in the next 100 years. His methods for being healthy are the best out there right now. This program covers everything and should be given to everyone who is alive.

I am 24 and super healthy and people ask me why I do all this health stuff? I am not sick but it interests me.

It blows my mind that people don't care to learn about their health. IF YOU HAVE A BODY AND LIVE, THEN YOU SHOULD BE CONCERNED WITH THE BEST METHODS OF TAKING CARE OF IT.

I've read a lot of health books and learned a lot of stuff on nutrition and the body, this is by far the best MEDICAL approach to health that covers all areas.

This guy is a genius.

"Your mind can elicit a healing response when even conventional medicine has proven ineffective." ~Dr. Andrew Weil

For months I've been listening to this CD set, trying to integrate the principles of Dr. Weil's teachings into my life. By increasing whole grains (I now eat a mixture of pumpkin seeds, roasted corn and roasted soy), discovering new natural remedies and exploring the ideas of how the body is always seeking to regain balance, I have learned a great deal about integrative medicine. Instead of just trying to solve problems as they occur, Dr. Weil seeks to encourage a preventative lifestyle that includes healthy choices and healing herbs.

Can we interact with allergens without having allergies?
Does our body truly want to be healthy and what are the obstacles to healing?
Should you avoid fructose?
Is eating pasta better than bread?
What is disconnection syndrome?
How can you become more self-reliant in regards to your health?
Which is more healthy - olive oil or chocolate?
How does your skin react to emotions?

By reigning in the forces of nature, there is a huge potential for healing. Cooking can become a healing meditation, buying yourself flowers promotes healing and remembering to spend time in nature can encourage positive emotional states.

Dr. Weil is very intuitive and is not held down by any single system of belief. He fully explores all possibilities and takes remedies from a wide variety of alternative medicine traditions.

I've learned so much by listening to these CDs. Simple ideas like adding blueberries to pancakes or eating more fiber with meals can increase your health.

In a world of confusing health advice, fad diets and doctors who seem opposed to using natural remedies, Dr. Weil bring clarity to the topic of integrative medicine. I am only left contemplating why most doctors would so freely give me medications with horrendous lists of side effects and fear beautiful plants, herbal remedies and comforting solutions to life's ever changing complexity.

Dr. Weil makes complete sense! I hope doctors everywhere will start reading his work and listening to his CD sets. Also look for Dr. Andrew Weil's Mindbody Tool Kit with breath work, meditation, guided imagery and sound therapy.

There is so much to learn about health and Dr. Andrew Weil is truly an enlightened teacher who can give you many of the keys to your own healing process. Fascinating stories about spontaneous healing are also included in this CD set.
