Deep, excellent.Review Date: 1999-08-29
Lerner strives for, and I feel achieves, an excellent balance between optimism and skepticism as he covers (a) the different "cultures" of conventional treatment - aggressive, gentle, U.S., European, Japanese, (b) spiritual approaches, (c) nutritional approaches, (d) physical and energetic approaches, (e) non-conventional herbal and pharmacological approaches. Stanislaw Burzynski, Virginia Livingston, Joseph Gold and Emanuel Revici, are some of the famous off-range cure inventors that he dignifies with his patient research.
I also found his chapters on the spiritual and psychological dimensions of the cancer journey especially strong. He takes the reader up to death's door. And beyond. The chapter on pain is a revelation.
Highly recommended for anyone.
Scepticism and optimism combinedReview Date: 2000-05-04
If you are anything like me, you'll appreciate the exceptionally fine balance that Michael Lerner draws. He honestly investigates the extent to which various cancer therapies work, mostly by reviewing "serious" research which examines cancer treatment from different angles. In areas where scientific studies contradict each other, he doesn't draw unfounded conclusions. He manages to give specific guidelines for dealing with cancer without advocating any one therapy too much.
Of the many books I've read on cancer, this is the one I appreciate the most. The tone of the book is honest, warm and caring; personal without being sentimental. And best of all, it inspires hope.
The one caveat I have is that I'd love to see a revised edition with all the newest research reviewed! If you're considering a purchase, do a websearch for "Lerner" and "Choices in Healing", this should provide you with a reference to an online version of the whole book. Once you're convinced, buy the book!

Overall, the book is very neat. It shows you pictures and instructions on how to do the proper sets. The book even has a "plan" in the back. It goes over everything from stretches, pushups, pull ups, swimming, running, and rope climbing. It's all very clear and very good.
I personally don't know if this book will prepare you for actual training for special operations. I do know that they are fun to do and the author is fairly nice about it. He doesn't insult you and he goes about to encourage you by knowing that not everyone who reads the book will be "SEAL material."
Another book I recommend is U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition by U.S. Navy. It's very informative and it breaks into two sections: fitness and nutritional advice.

We've made lots of great dishes from this book, including an knock-out pasta with proscuitto and peas, a roasted corn and tomato tart, and the beef with rosemary mushroom sauce. One caveat - sometimes, Cooking Light portions tend to run on the small side. Keep an eye on this if you're counting calories or fat based on the nutritional information included with each recipe.
I'm a Cooking Light subscriber, and I make dishes featured in the magazines as they come out. Because I don't have the space to store tons of magazines, I transfer my recipe notes to the cookbook when it comes out at the end of the year. I end up with a cookbook full of tasty, heathly recipes that are enhanced by notes I've made about our personal preferences for each dish. Yum!

Fixes a lot of myths, a must have for Dr's and smart peopleReview Date: 2006-02-15
The one problem about this book is that at times it is hard to get thru. The author throws in a lot of information that I'm sure a lot of us wont understand. I wish it was just a little more simplified. FOr example, in one chapter, he explains how a vitamen b6 can be more effective then an antidepresent in treating severe depression. However, he doesnt list the dosage or the amount of vitamen b6 that might be required to take. (that can be a bit of a problem for some).
Yet, this book is amazingly written, anaylized, and hopeful. Its good to know that someone really researched all of these facts and figures. He had a much different outlook on the whole deal as he broke down several vital stastics that the mass media and drug conpanies would never want to admit.
Despite its uplifting appeal, This is more of a book for a professional therapist rather then a client. I'd suggest for the client to read some important parts of this book to the therapist. A lot of this information is complicated and since Syd doesn't list the dosages and the "How exacltys" to get rolling on the correct bandwagon. Almost all of these methods are hard to persue solely.
But again this is a good book and I hope it gets more recongition then it has gotten in drugged america.

THE book on depressionReview Date: 2006-03-21
The way to use this book is to read the therapy, see if it matches your symptoms, decide whether you're willing to make the commitment (e.g., am I willing to take B6 for the next 6 months?), and then to try it. I had to try several different therapies until I found ones that worked for me. If one didn't work for me, I would read another section of this book and choose a new therapy to try. One problem with the book is that it covered some therapies in limited detail, and sometimes I needed to look up additional information in other sources.
Before getting this book, I tried looking up information online, but there was too much noise rather than real information to get any use out of what I was reading. This book cut through the noise and gave a concise summary of therapies that I could use to help myself.
In summary, the book is well-researched and an excellent resource. Using this book plus some free online information, I cured my moderate chronic depression in three months without drugs. Thank you, Syd Baumel, for writing this book!

The Book is a Tour de ForceReview Date: 2000-07-30
...I have to tell you that I learned a great deal. I read your book at one sitting, on a flight today to give a talk in the Midwest. I learned a few things from you which I will begin to incorporate into the care of my diabetic patients, and into my advice to my diabetic father.
I found most touching the passages describing your own struggle with diabetes, and quite compelling your anecdotes regarding friends and patients with diabetes. In your next book, these anecdotes should be increased in frequency throughout the text to improve readability for the lay person.
This book is a tour de force, and I congratulate you. I look forward to the sequel...
Chapter 12 is outstanding. I was transfixed by the description of your personal experience with a severe diabetic complication...
I enjoyed your section on nutrition and dietary supplements. You may wish to expand this section, and perhaps work with a dietician on some suggested menus for diabetic patients.
I enjoyed your chapter on diabetic impotence, and chapter on diabetic feet...
Joe, congratulations on a superb book. I admire your drive to help others with diabetes, and your tenacity to complete this book. Thanks again for allowing me to read it. I will recommend it to my diabetic patients.

Diet-Step 20/20 reviewed by The Bookwatch January 2002Review Date: 2002-01-15
Diet-Step 20 Grams/20 Minutes -- A Tool for Healthy LivingReview Date: 2002-01-08
In the first section, Stutman describes the Diet-Step plan, a low-fat and high-fiber diet that provides a well-balanced, varied selection of foods. He explains the dangers of fad diets and offers both quick weight-loss and maintenance eating plans. He suggests that readers eat no more than twenty grams of fat and no less than twenty grams of fiber daily at the beginning of the program, with small increases on the maintenance plan. The "Fat and Fiber Counter" in the middle of the book is an excellent quick reference to supplement the eating plans.
In the second section, Stutman outlines the Fit-Step plan, which consists of at least twenty minutes of walking or other aerobic exercise each day, and the Trim-Step plan to firm up muscles. He describes the effects of exercise on weight, health, appearance, and overall quality of life. He translates hours exercised into calories burned and is careful to point out safety issues for exercisers.
Stutman's medical expertise and research background are obvious throughout this book. For example, he urges the reader to assume a healthy eating lifestyle rather than to "go on a diet." He explains the body's attempts to conserve fat when a person adheres to an overly restrictive diet, the psychology of the binge eating/dieting cycle, and the importance of combining eating well with vigorous exercise. Stutman bases the eating and exercise plans on the most current research about metabolism and exercise physiology.
The use of underlining for emphasis in some parts of the book is distracting, but it is balanced by an informal writing style. Subtitles such as "Fearsome Fats," "Dangerous Dieting," and Women Who Sat Didn't Burn Fat" are amusing, as are the cartoons that illustrate the text. The overall tone of the book is relaxed and enjoyable, yet authoritative. The greatest strength of Diet-Step: 20 Grams/20 Minutes is that it is more than a diet and exercise book. It is a tool for healthy living.
Especially recommended for women with limited free timeReview Date: 2002-01-08
Diet-Step 20 Grams/20 Minutes - Reviewed by Karen LarsenReview Date: 2002-01-08
There are sample menus to stay on track with the proper distribution of fat, protein and carbohydrates. Dr. Stutman goes over the fiber content in various foods, the different types of fat, how veggies are full of all sorts of good stuff and help fight disease...I could go on, but this book is worth reading to find out for yourself.
The other focus in this book is exercise. Dr. Stutman goes over the various types of aerobic exercise, though he spends the most time on his registered Fit-Step Program. Fit-Step is about walking, though the category is rather broader than that since dancing is one type of "Step."
For a common sense approach to weight loss, good health and a plan that can last a lifetime, I recommend DIET-STEP 20/20 FOR WOMEN ONLY!

Then I listened and found out he is a medical genius and probably will revolutionize medicine in the next 100 years. His methods for being healthy are the best out there right now. This program covers everything and should be given to everyone who is alive.
I am 24 and super healthy and people ask me why I do all this health stuff? I am not sick but it interests me.
It blows my mind that people don't care to learn about their health. IF YOU HAVE A BODY AND LIVE, THEN YOU SHOULD BE CONCERNED WITH THE BEST METHODS OF TAKING CARE OF IT.
I've read a lot of health books and learned a lot of stuff on nutrition and the body, this is by far the best MEDICAL approach to health that covers all areas.
This guy is a genius.

For months I've been listening to this CD set, trying to integrate the principles of Dr. Weil's teachings into my life. By increasing whole grains (I now eat a mixture of pumpkin seeds, roasted corn and roasted soy), discovering new natural remedies and exploring the ideas of how the body is always seeking to regain balance, I have learned a great deal about integrative medicine. Instead of just trying to solve problems as they occur, Dr. Weil seeks to encourage a preventative lifestyle that includes healthy choices and healing herbs.
Can we interact with allergens without having allergies?
Does our body truly want to be healthy and what are the obstacles to healing?
Should you avoid fructose?
Is eating pasta better than bread?
What is disconnection syndrome?
How can you become more self-reliant in regards to your health?
Which is more healthy - olive oil or chocolate?
How does your skin react to emotions?
By reigning in the forces of nature, there is a huge potential for healing. Cooking can become a healing meditation, buying yourself flowers promotes healing and remembering to spend time in nature can encourage positive emotional states.
Dr. Weil is very intuitive and is not held down by any single system of belief. He fully explores all possibilities and takes remedies from a wide variety of alternative medicine traditions.
I've learned so much by listening to these CDs. Simple ideas like adding blueberries to pancakes or eating more fiber with meals can increase your health.
In a world of confusing health advice, fad diets and doctors who seem opposed to using natural remedies, Dr. Weil bring clarity to the topic of integrative medicine. I am only left contemplating why most doctors would so freely give me medications with horrendous lists of side effects and fear beautiful plants, herbal remedies and comforting solutions to life's ever changing complexity.
Dr. Weil makes complete sense! I hope doctors everywhere will start reading his work and listening to his CD sets. Also look for Dr. Andrew Weil's Mindbody Tool Kit with breath work, meditation, guided imagery and sound therapy.
There is so much to learn about health and Dr. Andrew Weil is truly an enlightened teacher who can give you many of the keys to your own healing process. Fascinating stories about spontaneous healing are also included in this CD set.
