More than a Diet - A Lifelong Self Improvement ToolReview Date: 2003-12-04
A diet book that makes sense (and I've tried them all!)Review Date: 2001-07-11
As someone who put on and lost close to 1,000 lbs over a 30-year period, using a variety of temporarily successful fad diets, and then overate again, I'm in a position to say how this one differs from other diet books.
This book enabled me to pin down my own metabolic type. The author calls it "Meta-type," and by that term she means not just how quickly your body breaks down food, but the entire way your body, emotions, and personaility work. This makes sense because eastern medicine -- unlike western -- doesn't try to separate the body from the mind (and emotions).
While this is not a simple fix (I've sure had enough of those!), I found myself learning a great deal about how my body, my emotions, and my stress level have kept me from maintaining a stable weight. What I most liked about the book is that it explains -- using solid science from endocrinology -- why the diet that works for my friend fails to work for me. The book helped me recognize how often my worst periods of weight gain correlated with periods of stress, and it provided me with many tools to keep on a healthy diet plan even when I'm under stress.
I strongly recommend buying this book to anyone who's tried Adkins, the Zone, and other "one size fits all" diet books -- and still cannot maintain their desired weight level.

A Perfect Blend of Chinese Medicine and Western ScienceReview Date: 2002-03-13
There's a reason why diet "gurus" can pop out a new book every six months and have it sell-chances are their last book didn't work for you and you're left still searching for a solution. There's also a reason Dr. Elizabeth Dane has put out only ONE book in over 25 years of practice as a clinical nutritionist and O.M.D. (Oriental Medical Doctor)-because this book is the only one you will need. It's a perfect blend of Chinese Medicine and Western Science, based on Dr. Dane's original, frontline research-real work she's done with real people for over two decades.
The problem with most "quick fix" diets it that they don't require any real change in lifestyle. They offer just a few new recipes and cutting out some snacks, and more exercise, of course-just re-hashing the obvious things we've been told for years. But because diets such as these don't require much change, they don't affect much real change either.
Dr. Dane's book succeeds because of an approach that's targeted to the individual-it's not a "one-size-fits-all" or "diet-of-the-month." Her plan may be harder to adjust to at first, and can initially appear very time consuming. But then, millions of Americans have wasted lots of time reading through new diet book after new diet book over the years. And as with anything, once a routine is developed, these changes become a part of daily life-and, best of all, Dr. Dane's results are permanent.

10 Essentials of Highly Healthy PeopleReview Date: 2003-04-16
Spirituality features prominently in this book. But as is the case with the classic timeless book "The Power of Positive Thinking"by the late Dr Norman Vincent Peale, the faith language is crafted in a non-offensive manner.
Even a passionate atheist will be challenged in a kind way, to consider the benefits of faith and spirituality when it comes to balancing one's life, by being proactive in preventing disease, lightening one's load, avoiding loneliness, and nurturing hopes and dreams.
This book will find its place, not in the bookshelve of my private library, but in a more accessable and prominent spot on my desk.
I am looking forward to referencing it in my own writing and will , without hesitation, highly recommend it to both patients in my clinic and coleagues at work.
As the title suggests, the 10 essentials are indeed essential to optimal wellness.
Dr Larimore has successfully convinced me that the four wheels of health are to in perfect balance; he has also provided the reader with the specifics of how to achieve that balance.
This book will contribute to a healthier lifestyle and inner peace and fullfillment.

Title: The 16 Minute Body Sculpting Kit
Author: Richard Walters
If you want to learn how to apply this body sculpting kit to attain your dream body in just 16 minutes a day, this book is for you. Pg. 5
Richard Walters is a Certified Personal Trainer. A former talk show host of Your Money Matters, financial advisor and district manager, Richard started to transform his body. Over the past 11 years he has researched and refined several techniques that will get you a firmer, healthier body in only 16 minutes per day, 6 days a week.
The book consists of three important sections: Cardio, Strength Training and Food. Each section takes the reader through an intense, instructive overview of what you need to do to achieve the maximum results in the shortest possible time.
Well laid out, concise and fully researched, this book is an easy to use guide for anyone that wishes to make changes in their physical appearance.
A DVD is included in the kit for readers wanting a step-by-step exercise plan. Each exercise is fully explained and demonstrated on the DVD as well as in the book. The food plan is unique and easy to use, with a small index card system to keep track of what you eat and when.
I had two personal trainers take a look at the program, and both of them saw it as a very workable plan and gave it the `thumbs up.'

If You're Ready, Rich Can Show You the Way!Review Date: 2008-08-16
So, it finally gelled in my head that my goal was to play, really play, til I was 60, and began reading and motivating myself, and looked for a trainer. When I found his website, www.GetFitWithRich.com, his picture was SO inspiring (go look for yourself--this guy is in his mid-50s!).
In four months working with Rich, I have lost about 25# of fat (and added about 10# of muscle), lost about 4" in my waist, and already pretty much have my body back. Now I can already set a goal much higher than I started out with, which was basically to get where I am already.
This book encapsulates his method. If you're not lucky enough to work with Rich personally, this is the next best thing.

A MUST Have!Review Date: 2004-05-20
A book that packs a powerful message about LoveReview Date: 2000-10-23
She speaks about how we'll see the "divine child" untouched by darkness or sickness - our loved one - emerge in this process. And she states that we must listen to the feeling behind the words. That little statement has changed my life. When someone asks for their mother, who may have passed on decades earlier, they're really seeking comfort and security and reassurance. We need to hear their feelings that lie in back of their words.
She goes on to say that 30% of language is verbal, the rest is expressed in body language and behavior.
Further on she makes the observation that Alzheimer's patients are sensitive to the thoughts of those around them and to always give plenty of Love, both in word, action and thought.
She states that "unconditional Love is not a measure, it is a flow. You cannot give it or get it, you can only be part of it. When you love a person with Alzheimers, clarity and awareness come to that person." [p149]
The other wonderful point she makes is that so much of our disappointment in Alzheimers patients is tied to our notion of their "proper" mortal identity. Your mother doesn't know she's your mother anymore, but you can value and cherish who she is in the here and now. Don't live in the past but nurture the childlike qualities she is expressing in the present.
Tons of good advice. The other book I'd recommend for anyone dealing with Alzheimers is "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures" by M. B. Eddy. It is a terrific sourcebook on powerful prayers that heal and restore. It is the "how-to" book of prayer.

Frena shows you how to get thru a day at a time and most of all how to keep yourself intact. We get lost in this disease, it consumes whole families. She shows you how to listen, your loved one is still within this person afflicted by this disease, you just have to listen carefully and you will see the person you love is still inside and has alot to tell. She shows you how to cope. Frena is my strength, she gave me the tools from reading her book 3 years ago. This book is my foundation and Frena is an angel. No other book affected me as much as this one. If you want to truly understand this disease, this is it!

Great JobReview Date: 2006-11-28
The book covers a very important area in modern medicine. The aging baby boomers who are beginning to retire. So many have neglected their physical health (and diet) for too long. The book offers a practical program for improving one's health no matter what age. The book does not offer to stop aging. No one can promise such an idea. The book will help you control how you feel as you age as well as what practical steps you can take as time goes by.
The book is well illustrated. The book is written by well a known dietician and physical therapist.

I did find the book tiresome to follow for a number of reasons including White's wordy, informal writing style, and his frequent reliance on quoting cryptic poetry.
I don't know if this has been recently corrected, but the copy I got looked like a draft: page numbers show as XX in the table of contents; numerous sections of the book simply have a section title and the words [to come] underneath; where graphics are supposed to be has [insert graphic here]; improper margins - the text seems to run off the page in places; and is full of typographic errors.
