White has a good message: Our fear-based, looking-good tendencies are not healthy for us and perpetuate unhealthy behavior in others. He discusses why we become this way, measures he took to lessen this in himself and suggests how we can do likewise.

I did find the book tiresome to follow for a number of reasons including White's wordy, informal writing style, and his frequent reliance on quoting cryptic poetry.

I don't know if this has been recently corrected, but the copy I got looked like a draft: page numbers show as XX in the table of contents; numerous sections of the book simply have a section title and the words [to come] underneath; where graphics are supposed to be has [insert graphic here]; improper margins - the text seems to run off the page in places; and is full of typographic errors.

Grab a pen - you're going to want to take notes!

No matter how many times I read this book, something new always resonates with me. These are life lessons, and a lot of them seem to take a whole lifetime to master...but the pursuit is the worthiest you'll ever embark upon. I strive every day to shake my unhealthy "normal" behaviors and embrace the spirit of this book - one that is laughing, open-hearted, through life.

Normal's not only unhealthy - it can kill you

Bowen White M.D. truly opens your eyes about what's important in life and how the stress that comes from what other people put into your inbox can really take you down. This is an easy to read, step by step eye opener about how the things we accept for normal in our life are slowly killing us and the book gives you significant, solid steps on how to take control over your life back from the world we live in and really learn to live. I loved it.

Bowen White takes you to the ultimate place, your inner self. His insight into the human mind is incredible. If you are seeking to find more about yourself, and why you live the life you do, this is the book for you. I have heard this wonderful man speak live and have read his book twice. It is incredible to walk a trail of the world with him and look at yourself.

I've known Bowen White for many years and so my review could be considered biased........however, I can honestly say that he has always been "out there" i.e., not being so normal, making people laugh all the time, and strikes me as a very healthy person ... he follows his own words and ideas and has written a very honest book. I'd say we can all learn something from him. He spoke to a keen group of university students here on a recent visit and had a great time involving them in taking a different path toward solving life's challenges. His enthusiasm for life and for all people comes through in this book.

Yoga is becoming very popular these days, and yet there aren't very many books out there that present yoga as clearly or beautifully as Yoga for Your Spiritual Muscles. The message of this book is that yoga can help you develop not only your physical self but your inner self as well. I really like how the author lists specific inner qualities (like Peace, Compassion, Awareness, and 12 other "spiritual muscles") that you can develop and then provides complete chapters with postures, breathing exercises and meditations designed to enhance each "spiritual muscles".

This book is simply outstanding

I am a former endurance athlete struggling with weight gain and back pain. I was given this book by a concerned friend. I thumbed through it, admired the exceptional quality, and placed it on my coffee table. When I could not even go for a long walk without pain, I started using the book, first choosing postures to address my spine. The benefits have been essentially immediate. It is well organized, light-hearted, and has proved to be a wonderful gift, indeed.

I work in an office everyday from nine in the morning to six at night and when i get home the only thing I think about is getting into some confortable clothes and settling down. But lately I have been noticing how tired I am all day. A friend suggested I start doing yoga like her. I am not a big gym fan so I went to bookstore and I found Glenda's book. It is brand new- just came out in May. That night I went home a bit skeptical, but I started that evening anyway. I was amazed at how good it felt to be doing exercise again. Unlike most arerobis plans that have always made me more tired the yoga in Glenda's actually had me feeling looser, energized and more fit. It gives you a great sense of accomplishment. A week into it and I was hooked. I have been doing the program for about three weeks and must say that it is the best feeling. I am not feeling as tired at work and my husband even said that I look younger and happier. My teenage daughter has started doing the exercises at night with me and we are having a lot of fun. I just have to say thanks Glenda.

Glenda has been my yoga instructor since her practice began. I have experienced, first hand, her knowledge and respect for the human body, as well as the peace, patience, and poise she models to each class. She is a "fireball"; the perfect combination of strength, and softness. All you have to do is follow her guide to the age-old secret of Yoga, and before you know it, you'll be in shape!! If you are not able to attend her classes, or if you just want to jazz up your own yoga practice, or even if you are totally new to Yoga, this book is meant for you! You will be inspired by her incredible form, swept away by the beautiful view, and enlightened by the detailed descriptions, and explanations of all of the healing qualities of Yoga. Burn a candle, take some deep breaths, and follow Glenda's powerful routine. Buy this book, and you will be drinking from the fountain of youth!!

A friend of mine and I were looking at some of the new yoga books and this one just popped out at us. we do yoga about 4 nights a week and we needed some new material. Yoga Turns Back the Clock was a amazing because it showed us a whole new perspective on yoga and showed us how it can be used to tone, to burn fat, or best of all to look younger. We have been using the book for only a few weeks but we think that it is best yoga book we have bought in a while. we love the approach and the style. it is also great for beginners, like us, who are not as flexible as many other yoga books expect you to be. Yoga Turns BAck the CLock challenges us without making us get into positions that we could not even begin to. i love this book and suggest it for anyone who likes doing yoga or wants to start.

I have been taking Glenda's yoga class for the past 2 years and from day 1 I have been impressed with her. She is amazing. She's beautiful, and toned and in awesome shape. All I can say at age 29 is, I hope I look half as good as she does when I reach her age. To all of those individuals who are younger, don't overlook this book because you think its for the older generation. Glenda has helped me lose weight, become the most toned I've ever been, and feel the best I've ever felt. The only down side to getting the book is that you can't hear her incredibly soothing voice in your home. Yoga has changed my life. And as long as I'm able, I will practice this method. This book gives you a good demonstration of what she teaches in her classes and I highly recommend it to people of all ages.

More than a Diet - A Lifelong Self Improvement Tool

Review Date: 2003-12-04
So far, I recommend it highly. It's working for me, I feel awesome and I've only been using this for two weeks. Very meaty info, yet easy to read and understand. the most interesting health book I've ever read. Personally, I am less concerned about weight loss than overall health, but this book appealed to me because of the integration of Chinese Medicine and Western Science, and the Meta-type concept convinced me I could live a healthier lifestyle, specifically tailored to my body and personality, even if I don't need to lose weight. "Complementary" medicine is growing in popularity but no one else has ever clearly explained concepts like Yin and Yang, for example, in ways we can understand through science. Dr. Elizabeth Dane very clearly and in a friendly way, explains how Yin and Yang (Chinese) are aligned with our nervous system and body energies (Western science). I started slow with the book, on the healthy eating and exercises, and then I add more ideas from the book in phases. I go back to it daily, understanding my Meta-type specifics, picking up new ways of relaxing and managing stress, modifying recipes from magazines like Cooking Light with my Meta-type foods. What I don't need is another book filled of charts of calories/fiber/fat that some lab puts out for every single body as "ideal" that's impossible that I have to memorize. Yuck. I've seen all different body typing studies, but none that is as comprehensive as this. This one includes mental, spiritual and all other experiences of health besides eating less to lose weight. I recommend it highly.

A diet book that makes sense (and I've tried them all!)

I was amazed at how wonderfully the author was able to integrate eastern and western medicine in this unusual diet book. Why is it a great diet book? Because it doesn't tell you just how to lose weight -- it gives you a weight management plan for life that flows directly from its healthy lifestyle recommendations.

As someone who put on and lost close to 1,000 lbs over a 30-year period, using a variety of temporarily successful fad diets, and then overate again, I'm in a position to say how this one differs from other diet books.

This book enabled me to pin down my own metabolic type. The author calls it "Meta-type," and by that term she means not just how quickly your body breaks down food, but the entire way your body, emotions, and personaility work. This makes sense because eastern medicine -- unlike western -- doesn't try to separate the body from the mind (and emotions).

While this is not a simple fix (I've sure had enough of those!), I found myself learning a great deal about how my body, my emotions, and my stress level have kept me from maintaining a stable weight. What I most liked about the book is that it explains -- using solid science from endocrinology -- why the diet that works for my friend fails to work for me. The book helped me recognize how often my worst periods of weight gain correlated with periods of stress, and it provided me with many tools to keep on a healthy diet plan even when I'm under stress.

I strongly recommend buying this book to anyone who's tried Adkins, the Zone, and other "one size fits all" diet books -- and still cannot maintain their desired weight level.

Transformative Book!

Wow! What a book! This book is an astonishing work. Not only does the author cover all that is necessary, she actually taught me to create an eating plan that works right for me - for my body, for who I am. Talk about customized! I felt like I'd spent hours getting a personal consultation from her by the time I'd read the book. The information is worth the effort. Her website supplemented what I learned in the text and I find myself feeling better all the time! (And looking healthier, too!)

A Perfect Blend of Chinese Medicine and Western Science

People who cannot see past the broad, quick-fix diets of our generation may react skeptically, even harshly to the methods outlined in Dr. Elizabeth Dane's book, "Your Body, Your Diet." Even more naïve are those who still want to believe that we are not affected by what we put in our bodies. Nothing could be further from the truth. What is also true, and is most often overlooked, is that who we ARE often defines what we WANT to put in our bodies. Our Meta-type determines our needs and our cravings, good and bad. This ideology is the very fiber of Dr. Dane's methods. By understanding our unique self, we take the greatest leap toward health and happiness.

There's a reason why diet "gurus" can pop out a new book every six months and have it sell-chances are their last book didn't work for you and you're left still searching for a solution. There's also a reason Dr. Elizabeth Dane has put out only ONE book in over 25 years of practice as a clinical nutritionist and O.M.D. (Oriental Medical Doctor)-because this book is the only one you will need. It's a perfect blend of Chinese Medicine and Western Science, based on Dr. Dane's original, frontline research-real work she's done with real people for over two decades.

The problem with most "quick fix" diets it that they don't require any real change in lifestyle. They offer just a few new recipes and cutting out some snacks, and more exercise, of course-just re-hashing the obvious things we've been told for years. But because diets such as these don't require much change, they don't affect much real change either.

Dr. Dane's book succeeds because of an approach that's targeted to the individual-it's not a "one-size-fits-all" or "diet-of-the-month." Her plan may be harder to adjust to at first, and can initially appear very time consuming. But then, millions of Americans have wasted lots of time reading through new diet book after new diet book over the years. And as with anything, once a routine is developed, these changes become a part of daily life-and, best of all, Dr. Dane's results are permanent.

You can't change unless you know what you're doing wrong. Finding out my personality type has opened my eyes to why I've been eating wrong, why I have become a couch potato, how others have influenced my lifestyle habits. But no more! Being aware of my type has shown me not only the challenges my type presents, but best of all, how I can use the strengths of my personality type to change. It just makes sense to make changes that are comfortable for my type than to try to change in a way that worked for somebody else. With 16 different personality types, I shouldn't expect to making healthy changes the way everybody else does. It makes me feel that I'm an individual and should take care of my personal needs. Now I have the way! Thanks to Roberta for making it so easy.

"At last, a book written with more than the "do's and don'ts" of dieting. This book goes beyond the "readiness to change" point in the process of food habits' management to the way you can make decisions about your health and weight for a lifetime. It helps you learn the "whys and hows" of making decisions about your health, food, eating, exercise and activity, all based on your personality type. You will understand more about past failures and how to make choices that make a difference this time. You will find your personality type, self assess and learn about the way you think and make choices. The format is easy to use, the health information is accurate, the decision tree is invaluable and the recipes are great. This book will be one of your best investments in yourself. I found this a very refreshing perspective after so many books that missed the mark. I highly recommend it."

Dr Larimore captures , with precise and articulte words, the idea that wellness encompasses an integration of both the physical and the mental/spiritual dimensions of our daily existence. The book is well researched. References and web based links are set out logically for further study. The book is medically reliable----as a pediatrcian for the past two decades and also as a wroiter myself, I was impressed by both the style and content of this well-written book.

Spirituality features prominently in this book. But as is the case with the classic timeless book "The Power of Positive Thinking"by the late Dr Norman Vincent Peale, the faith language is crafted in a non-offensive manner.

Even a passionate atheist will be challenged in a kind way, to consider the benefits of faith and spirituality when it comes to balancing one's life, by being proactive in preventing disease, lightening one's load, avoiding loneliness, and nurturing hopes and dreams.

This book will find its place, not in the bookshelve of my private library, but in a more accessable and prominent spot on my desk.

I am looking forward to referencing it in my own writing and will , without hesitation, highly recommend it to both patients in my clinic and coleagues at work.

As the title suggests, the 10 essentials are indeed essential to optimal wellness.

Dr Larimore has successfully convinced me that the four wheels of health are to in perfect balance; he has also provided the reader with the specifics of how to achieve that balance.

This book will contribute to a healthier lifestyle and inner peace and fullfillment.

I was unable to put it down during a transcontinental flight!
It will captivate the attention of any sincere and open-minded reader

Rich has put a lot of thought and work into a simple, yet effective guide to getting into shape. The best part of this program is that it is healthy and sensible! I really liked the emphasis on eating whole foods. Rich refers to this in the video as food that God made and man hasn't messed with. That's probably the best diet advice I've heard in my life! I am turning 50 this year. I have played hockey all my life, and had managed until about a year ago to get by just on instinct and natural quickness. But then I started getting nagging injuries, none too serious but they kept me from enjoying myself. Early this Spring, as I stood there savoring a victory in our league playoff finals--we Won the "Cup" (with my son as a team mate--quite an experience), I could not help but notice how much it had taken out of me--I would not be able to go on much longer like this.

So, it finally gelled in my head that my goal was to play, really play, til I was 60, and began reading and motivating myself, and looked for a trainer. When I found his website, www.GetFitWithRich.com, his picture was SO inspiring (go look for yourself--this guy is in his mid-50s!).

In four months working with Rich, I have lost about 25# of fat (and added about 10# of muscle), lost about 4" in my waist, and already pretty much have my body back. Now I can already set a goal much higher than I started out with, which was basically to get where I am already.

This book encapsulates his method. If you're not lucky enough to work with Rich personally, this is the next best thing.

Last September I started a new medication with a side effect of weight gain (25 lbs.)! I tried everything to drop the weight, but was getting nowhere fast! I have been weened off the medication by my physician & have been using Rich's Food Card System. His simple explanation & easy to use food card system helps me to chose the appropriate foods to eat each day. I get plenty of food & eat SIX times a day. I lost 7 lbs. my FIRST WEEK! For me, a food card/food log works best. I highly recommend this book!

Rich Walters is a prolific writer who doesn't waste time on a lot of fluff. He gets down to the nitty gritty giving you the quintessential information you need to succeed at body sculpting. I am personally involved in carrying out Rich's daily plan and find that my body is getting stronger every day. I only spend the few minutes that Rich proscribes, and it works...and it'll work for you too!

A MUST Have!

This book is a must have for caregivers or anyone who has a family member with Alzheimer's. You can read it through or just pick out chapters that will help you at the time, but the biggest help to me was Chapter 12 about Approaching Death. It gave me the comfort and help that I needed. I've read many books on the subject, but this has been the most helpful yet because it is based on love.

A book that packs a powerful message about Love

This is a tremendous resource for people who believe in the healing power of Love. Frena Gray Davidson has written a very spiritually centered book that will inevitably help any caregiver and their loved one.

She speaks about how we'll see the "divine child" untouched by darkness or sickness - our loved one - emerge in this process. And she states that we must listen to the feeling behind the words. That little statement has changed my life. When someone asks for their mother, who may have passed on decades earlier, they're really seeking comfort and security and reassurance. We need to hear their feelings that lie in back of their words.

She goes on to say that 30% of language is verbal, the rest is expressed in body language and behavior.

Further on she makes the observation that Alzheimer's patients are sensitive to the thoughts of those around them and to always give plenty of Love, both in word, action and thought.

She states that "unconditional Love is not a measure, it is a flow. You cannot give it or get it, you can only be part of it. When you love a person with Alzheimers, clarity and awareness come to that person." [p149]

The other wonderful point she makes is that so much of our disappointment in Alzheimers patients is tied to our notion of their "proper" mortal identity. Your mother doesn't know she's your mother anymore, but you can value and cherish who she is in the here and now. Don't live in the past but nurture the childlike qualities she is expressing in the present.

Tons of good advice. The other book I'd recommend for anyone dealing with Alzheimers is "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures" by M. B. Eddy. It is a terrific sourcebook on powerful prayers that heal and restore. It is the "how-to" book of prayer.

This is the book that changed everything for me. Its about approaching this disease with Love, Strength and Courage.
Frena shows you how to get thru a day at a time and most of all how to keep yourself intact. We get lost in this disease, it consumes whole families. She shows you how to listen, your loved one is still within this person afflicted by this disease, you just have to listen carefully and you will see the person you love is still inside and has alot to tell. She shows you how to cope. Frena is my strength, she gave me the tools from reading her book 3 years ago. This book is my foundation and Frena is an angel. No other book affected me as much as this one. If you want to truly understand this disease, this is it!

Frena Gray-Davidson is the ultimate "been there, done that" person in Alzheimer's care. Her book is a support group that can always be with you, ready to speak to the issues that concern you now and prepare you for what is likely to concern you in the future. All parts of this book will help you meet the challenges of dementia care, however several chapters are of special value. Chapter 2, Before Diagnosis and chapter 4, Family Crisis Alzheimer's Style guide families in the early stages of the disease. Chapter 11, Knowing When To Let Go, answers some of the tough questions about placement in a care facility. The final chapter, Moving On, gives guidance for that time when caregiving is no longer the top priority. In keeping with her theme not to lose the person in the process of coping with the disease, Ms. Gray-Davidson leads us away from using psychiatric terms to label behaviors and thought patterns which result from diminishing cognitive ability. She explains what may look like paranoia as "a reasonable fear response, given the limitations of the disease." She makes what is often labeled delusional thinking easier to understand as "memory which has drifted into some point in the past." She writes with compassion and humor, creating therapy for the caregiver and family members. The book is interesting to read and easy to understand. As a Geriatric Care Consultant, I have often loaned my copy of The Alzheimer's Sourcebook for Caregivers to my clients. Most of them return it with the comment that they have purchased copies for themselves and for family members. This started with the 1st edition and is continuing with the 3rd. I can make no higher recommendation.

I purchased this book years ago. I am not a big reader, but I was unable to put this book down. I had to see what the next story was going to be and how it turned out. I have re-read this book several times. The stories are so amazing. Some funny and some sad. I have caught myself reading one story over and over again, each time hoping that there would be some Hollywood happy ending. But each time the kid ends up dying.

I have looked for another book by these authors or anyone else that comes close to touching this book and so far I have been unable to find one. Many other books are from a single perspective. I like how this one includes war stories from a lot of people. It adds a lot to the book.

Alot of work went into this one!

Theisen did her homework--interviewing hundreds of "angels". I have a greater respect for paramedics and Emt's now. I'm glad there are people like them in this world!

Having read most of the small selection of books relating to EMS.I found this book to be more true to life. In my 16 years experience the last 10 as a Paramedic. I found that I could relate to almost all the stories presented in one way or another. One thing about EMS, We like to tell our stories and listen to others tell there's.These folks did a good job at that.

This book is a great collection of true stories from all over the U.S. They are able to tell the real stories of medics instead of the Rescue 911 variety. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Emergency Medicine. I am glad that someone wrote a book letting everyone know that not all the patients you encounter will survive despite your best efforts..

As a physical therapist, I was impressed by the comprehensive approach to health and fitness that this book offered to its readers. I especially appreciated the section covering stress and sleep, which is all too often left out of an exercise program. The use of nutrition and exercise in conjunction with each other, really offers a reader a lifestyle rather than just a program to follow. It is made easy, fun and very do-able for even the most sceptical. As I leader and director of a facility, I have already recommended this book to my patients and my therapists to use as a resource for home exercises programs.

I bought the book following hip replacement surgery, which left me handicapped and I now follow the excercise regime laid out, paying
attention to the precautions which accompany the various movements.
This I have found to be very useful.

The procedure for calculating my daily caloric intake, together with the
Body Mass Index Table and the list of Calories Burned per Hour during the
performance of various activities has been very informative.

It is also comforting to note that the authors list the sources from which their data is obtained

This book provides great information for those interested in getting back into shape, or for those who want to add something new to their existing exercise program. The information is provided in an easy to follow, step by step format. It is also unique due to the fact the book is written by a dietician and a physcial therapist. As a physical therapist myself, I was excited to see this unique colaboration. I will feel confident in providing this literature to my patients as an adjunct to therapy.

This book is well done. Anti-Aging books come in all shapes and forms. This book gives excellent advice regarding this matter. The program presented is like a prescription (hence the title). You follow what is presented to you knowing there is science behind the advice.

The book covers a very important area in modern medicine. The aging baby boomers who are beginning to retire. So many have neglected their physical health (and diet) for too long. The book offers a practical program for improving one's health no matter what age. The book does not offer to stop aging. No one can promise such an idea. The book will help you control how you feel as you age as well as what practical steps you can take as time goes by.

The book is well illustrated. The book is written by well a known dietician and physical therapist.
