While the book highlights symptoms of ovarian cancer, a subject that needs much more public exposure, be warned that the medical information is several years old. Includes poetry. Not what I expected.

An eye opener

As this book is full of true stories, either by women themselves suffering from ovarian cancer or their loved ones watching them, it allows you to put a face to a statistic. You feel their pain, their anger and also at times their joy and relief. It stresses the importance of a good patient-doctor relationship. How trust and good listening can lead to an early diagnosis and increased recovery rate. It shows how we need to listen to what our body is telling us. The courage these families have shown is inspirational, being prepared to share their stories with you, aiming to increase awareness of this disease and attempting to reduce the number of cases with delayed diagnosis.

The beginning of the book has a piece written by a doctor about ovarian cancer. At the very least I recommend every woman should read this book. It is also both relavent and important for all doctors, gynecologists and nurses to read this. Finally, lets not forget the men who have had to or may have to watch their daughters, sisters, wives, mothers or friends go through this pain. Increase your awareness and read this book.

If you are a woman, love a woman, or are responsible for women's health, please read this book! I just returned from Maureen Ryberg's (the author of this book) funeral. How very sad for so many of us to see this vital, brilliant, caring woman succumb to her illness. Would that her doctors had the information earlier.

This is the most inspiring, and the most poignant, book I have ever read. It should be read by all women and - even more - by every doctor, especially General Practitioners, Gynaecologists and Gastro-enterologists. May it spread far and wide and fulfil its mission of saving lives. May every reader pray for the author and for the women whose stories have been so beautifully presented to us.

A must read for any woman!

When Maureen first told us she was going to put this book together, we all felt that it was a very good thing she was doing. I feel so privileged to be able to share my story in the hopes that other women will search out the knowledge and assistance they need. I recommend this book for anyone with a woman in their life, as the information it contains helps to illustrate how even the smallest changes should be listened to.

This Book Saved My Life

Some time ago, I was living in a hellish state that was like some kind of bad drug trip: blurry consciousness, constant depression and lethargy, memory loss, attention deficit, and frequent suicidal thoughts that were nearly carried out on several occasions.

One day I was wandering in a haze after work, went inside a book store, and sought out books on depression. I read the premise of this book, and thought "what the hell, worth a shot."

After about 10 days of diet and nutritional modification to boost the mood-elevating brain chemicals as recommended in the book, I became a different person, and noticed a greatly increased energy level, and even reversal of hair loss! There were still some serious biochemical imbalances (such as chronic "yeast" and bacterial infections, food allergies, and chemical sensitivities) that affected my mental health, and remained undiscovered, but the nutritional information in this book set me on the right path. The sun began to shine again, and despite the remaining untreated conditions, there were enough "ups" to make life worth living again, and give me hope for the medication-free recovery that eventually did come about when I eventually became aware of and treated those other issues.

This book saved my life, and finally explained why some people can keep a smile through the worst misfortunes while others can be miserable while living the life of royalty.

Been there, still doing that.

I'm one who is helped by this program. I go off the program, get depressed (I cry alot - feel sad), back on, feel fine, feeling weepy goes away. Brain chemistry seems to be be just a little off. Cost is minimal. Vendor suggested I read this back in 94. Been taking L-tryosine since. 2 gr/d. 4 gr. when business is bad. I have a high anxiety wife, she is much more mellow when she takes it regularly. She has noticed the difference.

May not work for everyone as everyones chemistry is different but it is certainly worth a try, just make sure you keep at it for 2 or 3 months as it is not an instant fix.

Everyone with depression should have this book, especially if it's your first book on how you can treat your depression with nutritional supplements, yes, even suicidal depression. Dr. Slagle's simple and easy-to-understand explanations give you the "instant hope" you so badly need. Her knowledge and experience in treating the physical causes of depression will give you the confidence to begin helping yourself out of the lost world of depression. I sincerely hope Dr. Slagle (TheWayUp.com) will re-print this book even just as it is.

This book was a mind opener. Even though I wasn't seriously ill and have already read a lot on health maintenance, I still found crucial information, including a practice that helped me reduce muscle aches. The practice has become part of my Sunday beauty routine. The book is a bit repetitive and is written in a slapdash fashion (which actually helps authenticate the author in a way) but the information itself was valuable enough that I bought another of her books later on.

Informative book necessary in a world full of chemicals.

Wellness Against all Odds came to me through reviews and readings of other books by this author. I agree with the reviews here; it offers much clarity and common sense about nutrition and medical conditions and for this reason I would recommend it heartily. However, Sherry lost me when she added the final chapter which included personal comments that were out of place in this otherwise wonderful book of reason. I did not need to hear her interpretation of religion and societal ills which she seems to think are due in part to the separation of church and state. Such views left a bad taste in my mouth by the time I finished the book, and were harder to ignore than the many typos in this book.

Sherry Rogers was my doctor for a number of years. She was always ahead of her time and now it shows! All of her books are wonderful, informative, easy to read and life saving. I hope everyone gets as much from this and all her books as I have. You'll be amazed at how much you DON'T know about your body, the environment and how we are killing ourselves until you read these books. Trust me, I am only a consumer here, but I pass these books on to everyone I care about and have for years! I'm going to post this to all the books I have read by Sherry. I just can't say enough about this woman. She literally saved my life (allergies, life and health threatening mineral and vitamin deficiencies) and my husband's too (bladder cancer). This book is a must for anyone who loves food. Nine comprehensive chapters covering not only fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes, but also meat and poultry, fish and shellfish and dairy and eggs.

The chapter on Nutrition Basics is essential for anyone who wants to come to terms with food and how it relates to good health. Appendicies include a Cooking Glossary (which describes in detail baking, boiling, braising, poaching, pressure cooking, roasting, simmering, steeping, stewing, and on and on ...), Fats and Oils, and Herbs and Spices.

Subsections of each item include topics such as availability, shopping tips, storage, preparations and serving suggestions. Nutritional information boxes are included indicating calories, fat content, protein, carbohydrate, fiber, cholesterol and sodium. Also listed are key vitamins and nutrients.

Fascinating information is also included .. for example, the fruit/vegetable argument about tomatoes is not only settled definitively (botanically a fruit, specifically a berry) but we are also informed that as the result of a tariff dispute, it was officially designated a vegetable in 1893 by the Supreme Court of the United States ... Proving that the court's having their collective head up their robes is nothing new.

If you are serious about learning how to improve your relationship with food (and who isn't?) you've simply got to have this book. I've had mine since 1995 (I got it in conjunction with a subscription to the University of California at Berkeley's Wellness Letter), and I still consult it regularly.

I think that this book, along with Julia Child's "The Way To Cook" would be an excellent foundation for anyone who is serious about health and nutrition.

The Best Wellness Overview There Is.

Review Date: 2008-09-10
Wellness is a whole way of looking at the world of health and well being and it is really about lifestyle change. Jack Travis & Regina Sara Ryan's Wellness Workbook stands alone as THE reference for anyone in the wellness field who wants a total picture, a sound theoretical foundation, and engaging & practical ways to make healthy changes.

The illness/wellness continuum, the "iceberg" model of health and disease, and especially the model for understanding the wellness energy system are absolutely essential for any professional to truly understand what wellness is and how it works. Travis has always "gotten it" that wellness is about many things, not just diet and exercise. His emphasis on the psychological factors are critical for without self-understanding and motivation behavioral change is most unlikely.

As the field of wellness coaching grows those delivering these services need this book at arm's length on their shelves.

I love this book! and am grateful for its reintroduction into the marketplace. With its new look and updated content I can now use the Wellness Workbook in my college health classes without fear of being labeled out of date. The Wellness Workbook was one of the original shapers of the Wellness Movement in the early 1980s, and promoted the idea that health was more than the absence of disease. Authors Travis and Ryan encouraged, and still encourage, readers to think, "Why settle for getting by, when your one precious life could be so much more?" They present Wellness as a jouney, a way of living and thinking, rather than a destination. The Wellness Workbook gracefully suggests that we take a mindful look at our lifestyles, and consider the impact our lifestyles have, in every fine detail, on ourselves, our families, our communities, and our world.
When most people hear the word "Wellness," they think healthful diet, exercise, and maybe a little stress management. This book goes far beyond the standard superficial health advice found in most books with Wellness in their title. The Wellness Workbook presents the most holistic and integrated view of wellness I have ever found in my twenty plus years as a health educator. As an example of this, take a look at the chapter on Wellness and Eating, where Travis and Ryan encourage you to consider the many meanings of hunger and nourishment. Along with a discussion of Eating for High-Level Wellness you will also find sections on Food as a Pain Reliever, Filling Up the Emptiness, and Food as Emotional Insulation. Although these sections may sound somewhat gloomy, the thoughtful writing is nonjudgmental and interesting, and the humor found throughout the book allows the book to "walk its talk" and consider the many sides of every issue, and understand how the many facets of Wellness are related one to another.

The New Wellness Workbook, which was new to me with this 3rd edition, is the most comprehensive book that I have ever seen on wellness. Going far beyond cultural and medical ideas of health, the authors inspire us to look at our own wellbeing from the widest perspective, including emotional, social, and spiritual perspectives. As a holistic GP (family MD) I know that this book will be at the top of my recommended reading list.

I am a Certified HypnoBirthing® Childbirth Educator and I am sharing this with every person I know personally and every couple I come into contact professionally. I look forward to sharing it with my young daughter someday 10 years from now [hopefully Dr. Travis & Ms. Ryan will write future editions too]! I ate up each and every page, looking forward to the next. Plus it was easy to read and the index was so detailed that I could locate specific concerns quickly as if Dr. Travis was personally answering my inquiry. I loved the personal pictures from the authors' childhood and the last page [Grand Certificate] deserves to be on everyone's wall. If more parents followed the information in this book, the result would be lots of happier children, better balanced and less angry teenagers and less violent and money/status starved adults in our world. I know I will be referring to my copy for years to come ...or until the cover falls off! Perhaps by then the 4th edition will be birthed. I'm also planning to give copies as gifts since what it better but the gift of health!

Particularly liked the chapters on reasoning and working to principle. There are no physical exercizes to do, but there are activities which are helpful towards your understanding.

The only truly accessible but not-oversimplified book on AT I've found.

The measure of a good book is that you can read it more than once and find new things each time - and that's how it's been for me. I am still reeling as I take in the enormity of the idea that it is more how we think in relation to activity than what we think that determines the quality of our performance. And the book describes so many constructive ways for changing our thinking in relation to performance. Of course it won't be for everyone, as there are no quick-fixes offered. Instead it's a day at a time, step by step, leave your old-self behind approach.

I liked this book. I had thought the Alexander technique was all about posture, when in fact it's all about performance - the way that we do what we do. There are some great stories in this book which I have enjoyed reading again and again.

The author clearly knows his stuff and how to write. Having read many books about change and the Alexander Technique this has to go down as one my favourites. I recommend it to anyone looking to change deep-seated patterns of behaviour that are undermining their performance in any field.

We've had this book for several months now and everything we have tried has been successful. The flour mix works and there are many unusual and really delicious cookie recipes. Cakes are pretty standard but the recipes are excellent. Overall, one of our most used gluten free cookbooks.

LOVE IT!

I admit it... I have a cookbook addiction! And since our family has been gluten free, I have added quite the collection of gluten free cookbooks to my shelves. And I use them ALL! Well, I now have a new favorite for gluten free desserts... CONNIE SARROS' DESSERT COOKBOOK! EVERY recipe I've tried is fantastic! And if you can crave it, Connie has a recipe for it! I can't say enough about it! I highly recommend it to ANYONE who wants to venture into gluten free baking, or just add new options to the dessert menu. But warning: everyone will start asking you to bring the dessert... everytime!

Very tasty recipes.

This book has recipes that are very good and pretty easy to make. One thing that I really appreciated was that they all use the same flour mixture, and the flour actually has nutritional value, as opposed to having 5 different flours throughout the book that you have to make, or just using a mixture of corn starch and potato starch. If you need to cook gluten-free desserts, I would highly recommend this book!

My sister, her daughter and I have used this cookbook to make some wonder desserts. No one knows or cares that they are gluten free because they taste so GREAT! Recipes are easy to follow. I double recipes and have had no problems. Great buy!

This CD set offers listeners the opportunity to explore how they feel about their weight, about the role of food in their lives, and about love and what it really means. Each session leads listeners through an examination of a new way of breaking free from emotional eating...and it's not about dieting. While this is a radical idea, it touches something true inside, and Roth offers Eating Guidelines to help us navigate our way through the forest of our own experience of life and to hear our own voices.

How we eat is how we live, and how we feel about pleasure, deprivation, hope, despair, fear, happiness, and the whole range of feelings and experiences defines our lives. She postulates that the old, hurtful, voice can be replaced by our own spirit, and that we can learn to transcend what we believed as children and to find real peace as adults. We can be ourselves and welcome the possibilities of the future. We can learn to love and care for ourselves.

Listen to Roth, here; she makes incredible sense. She knows how it feels to be caught up in feelings about weight and personal value, and you will likely recognize yourself in her descriptions...and find your way home to yourself using her tools. Work with the meditations and exercises provided, and follow your heart to living a truly radiant life!

I really like a lot of what Ms. Roth has to say, but was extremely disappointed because in purchasing this audio-book, I was hoping that I was acquiring a resource that I could turn to for comfort, as I do with some of my other Sounds True audio-books. That will not be the case with this one, unfortunately, because I find Ms. Roth's voice inflections to be exceedingly annoying at times. When she speaks normally, I have no problem, but I actually take my ear-buds out when she uses her dramatic or sarcastic voice (which is a lot). Bummer.

I just bought a couple of her books. Hopefully her writing style isn't annoying.
