Great reading - a must for everyone!Review Date: 2008-02-29
Even experienced vegetarians might find something new here.Review Date: 2006-03-07
Still, these reasons are articulated in intricate and often disturbing detail. The links between dairy production and the life (if it can be called that) of veal cattle, the extreme overproduction required of laying hens and mother cows, the huge amounts of waste produced by factory farms and the dangers of biotechnology, genetic engineering and cloning are outlined in stunning detail.
Of course there are also reasons involving the positive health benefits (and benefits for the planet) brought about by eating a vegetarian diet, from reducing your risk of several kinds of cancer to increasing beneficial phytochemicals in your diet and reducing the world's oil and energy drains.
There are probably reasons here that most readers have not considered, and facts you might not know about; for instance, that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest pregnant women heat cold cuts to 170 degrees to reduce their risk of getting listeria. Or that even though its forbidden for cows to eat other cows because of the risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, or mad cow disease), the Food and Drug Administration says as many as 350,000 cows that humans consume were fed bovine by-products.
So many moments in this book will make readers gasp in surprise and horror at the state of the average American diet and what it is doing to the animals, the workers who are paid to kill those animals, the planet that must deal with the waste and corpses of those animals and the people who consume such a diet.
If nothing else, this book will affirm everything you believe about why the vegetarian diet is right for you and the planet. Perhaps you could also use it to convince family and friends to stop their meat-eating ways, or at least to show them why you are a vegetarian.-Sarah White
A Valuable Resource For Every Home LibraryReview Date: 2005-12-04
101 Reasons is a gift to society. A clear, comprehensive log of the myriad reasons a vegetarian diet just makes sense. The tone is perfect-unapologetic and direct while still light and conversational. Reading this will strengthen your convictions if you are already vegetarian, and will make you stop and reassess if you are not. This is a "just the facts" approach. Thankfully, not once are animals referred to as "cute" anywhere in the book. Covering everything from individual health benefits to environmental and global impact, and everything in between, this book should be a treasured resource in any home library to be referred to again and again.

But beware: The results of this book might be that you find yourself jumping out of bed every morning and running to a mirror to see how thin you have gotten during the night. You might find yourself with a new and unusual desire to rush to stores and spend money you werent planning to spend and buy bikinis and tops that show off your belly button.
You may find yourself with a new boyfriend or a newly ardent husband. In other words....this book works.

From Her Heart!Review Date: 2004-12-15
This work is well written, and I feel the author has a deep love for God and Jesus, but I cannot agree with her interpretations of the Scriptures in her work, so that did become a hindrance to my enjoyment of the book. Although I would lke to say, I feel her commitment to what she believes is truly from her heart.
On the back cover it is written, " This may not be a diet book for the die-hard, steadfast Christian follower," and I believe I am in that category. Although I sense a a strong desire to reach out and help others through her writings; I did not feel this book was beneficial to me. However, I am sure to others, it may be just what they are looking.

Man Shall Not Live By Bread AloneReview Date: 2004-12-09
After attending an International Book Convention, she decided to write a book filled with original spiritual interpretations and quotes from the King James Version.
Not only does it seem rare to find books that quote the King James Version, it is even more rare to find books focusing on the words of Christ. I have looked in bookstores and online and they do seem more difficult to find in the King James Version, a personal favorite.
What does it mean not to live by bread alone? This famous quote by Jesus has a much deeper meaning. Gail shows how Jesus was on earth to teach mankind about the invisible, unchanging inner being. This being has to be fed spiritual truths just as our bodies need food.
Each day has one verse and a unique explanation. At times Gail comes up with answers that make complete sense. Her After Dinner Mint: "...I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" John 14:6. She then goes on to write a "Note From the Author" in which she explores this in more depth. She also discusses Free Will, Crime, her definition of Evil, Kingdom of heaven and Wine. A short glossary is also included.
Perfect for anyone seeking to learn more about the Teachings of Jesus.

The 69 StepsReview Date: 2007-12-04
Don illustrates these principles by, for example, filling the book with intelligent humor (OK, not all of it is intelligent), some his own and some borrowed from others. At the same time, the book is science-based and is well-stocked with both data and references. The text is aimed at helping people to become folks who are "AUI," that is "aging under the influence" of leading a healthy and well lifestyle. The goal is to, as you age, maintain the best possible health, the highest available energy levels, the greatest obtainable degree of physical mobility, and the fullest mental capacity. None of these are to be measured on any absolute scale, but should for each person reflect the reality of their life and their particular genetic and educational endowments or lack thereof.
To help you do this, Don has assembled his "69 Tips." Why 69? Well, Don was 69 when he wrote the book. I suppose that is as good a reason as any. Among them are: "Nutrition [is] the heart of the matter;" "Just say no [to medicalization];" "Take Charge [of the wellness process];" "Understand Longevity;" "Stay centered and balanced;" "Exercise [your] critical faculties;" "[Practice achieving] serenity;" "Sex is wonderful;" "Humor is powerful stuff;" "[Think about] The Meaning of Life [for yourself]." A most useful Wellness prescription for all of us.

A Call To Living Well!Review Date: 2007-11-29
What will keep this book within reach is not only the easy "pick it up and put it down" format of 69 tips, but the absolutely irrepressible zeal that Don has for living that shows through. A true "founding father" of the modern day wellness movement, Dr. Ardell has been at the forefront of helping us all to realize that lifestyle is the biggest determinant of our health. Don's approach to REAL Wellness, is just that...real, and, fortunately for us, it's fun too.

This delightful and informative romp takes the sting out of agingReview Date: 2007-10-31
Dr. Ardell is a social critic and obviously is concerned about the lack of critical thinking and unhealthy practices that is becoming an American tragedy. He does not shove his views down our throats, but allows us to enjoy his perspective and invites us to form our own.
I've seen Don Ardell speak at conferences and I'm pleased to report that this book, like Don, inspires us to be all we can be. Reading Aging Beyond Belief is an opportunity to spend time with a delightful and knowledgeable wellness role model and guru.
I'm still a relative youngster (49) and I feel lucky to have Dr. Ardell's book in my library. I will be purchasing this book for family and friends. My hope is that they too, will age beyond belief.
Don't Miss it!Review Date: 2007-10-15

The epitome of health booksReview Date: 2003-10-28
By methodically and humanistically going through the entire sequence of events a person encounters in a radiation therapy environment, the author demystifies and destigmatizes radiation treatment. The author's upbeat approach is infectious! The inspirational quotes that accompany each chapter cheer the reader. I salute the author for writing this informative book.

Right On the Money If Your Problem Is Insulin ResistanceReview Date: 2002-10-16
Although insulin resistance is often the culprit, it is frequently overlooked by traditionally trained internists who, when all common blood and other testing comes back normal, don't understand the condition enough to explore it as the possible answer to their patients' complaints.
Williamson does an excellent job spelling out symptoms caused by insulin resistance-- which makes it easy for the reader to discern if this, in fact, is his or her problem. Her writing shows she has researched this condition thoroughly and understands how it can lead to severe illnesses including heart disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and cancer-- and she writes in such a way that her research is easy for the lay person to understand. While the book does provide a good bit of scientific information about disease processes, she has written a book that is highly accessible to most anyone who reads it.
She also clearly presents strategies for altering one's diet and lifestyle to reduce damage caused by systemic dysfunction that leads to the body losing its ability to produce, process, and use insulin the way it is supposed to. She offers concise advice for helping restore the body to its healthier state and offers a comparison of 5 different popular diets in a way that helps the reader choose which one may be best for him/her.
Williamson obviously believes that, with proper information and guidance, many of us can make changes in our lives that will help us feel better and ward off serious disease, and she does an excellent job passing along that hopefulness to her readers.
Finally, she provides lists of 'safe' foods for people suffering from insulin resistance and a number of simple and tasty recipes that incorporate foods in combinations that help relieve symptoms of the disorder. "Blood Sugar Blues" is a well-written and easily understood primer for anyone dealing with insulin resistance and the ills it can cause.
