Hospital Stay Handbook summarizes the essential issues needed to ensure your loved ones will survive a trip to any hospital regardless of duration. Ms. Buck lifts the "White Curtain" on standard operating polices calculated to cause harm to patients - policies not intended to harm, of course, just not carefully and tightly managed by the hospital system. She explains the concept of "body part Doctors" who see the patient as a Liver, Lung or Spleen, not a human being. The most important message Ms. Buck delivers is "be there 24/7" or expect the worse. Our family's experience bears testimony to her advice that some family members must be at or near bedside continuously - the consequences of not doing so are dire.

Hospital Stay Handbook is a necessary read for anyone who is unfamiliar with how the hospital and medical system really works. It is an inside guide to ensuring quality care for you and your loved ones. Having been one of the health care professionals who assisted in the care of Jari's husband, Bill, I am keenly aware of the circumstances from which the book was written and am inspired by the amount of knowledge the book imparts. As a voice of advocacy for patients, Jari's efforts are unparalleled. Raise the bar for hospital-based patient care by educating yourself -- this book is the perfect primer.

I purchased this book for my healthy, yet aging parents who have been facing some hospital stays recently. I was concerned they could be 'wiser consumers'.

Having a book lay out the risks and true dangers and how to prepare in advance is extremely valuable. The idea of 'advocacy' and advance preparation in this field strife with land mines is aided by Jari's unfortunate personal experience.

Thank you, Jari.

Yes, you can make a difference! Just try.

Jari Buck has authored a book that enables the family of a patient to potentially make a most significant difference in the outcome of the loved one. The text imparts good common sense, as well as needed encouragement to step up to the bat and participate.

A serious illness can generate overwhelming fear and depression, which of course, makes it difficult for someone to become engaged in the process of healing. Yet, problem solving and just helping out when the staff is stretched too thin can work miracles.

Just try...and if you're lacking in ideas, please read Jari Buck's book.

Another kind of health insurance

Having health insurance is a critical component in assuring quality health care ~ but there's another kind of "insurance" that is just as important. Being a patient advocate for someone you love can truly make the difference between life and death, as Jari Holland Buck writes in her "Hospital Stay Handbook." My eyes were opened when I witnessed the constancy and continuity of care that's required to support a loved one who's in the hospital for any length of time. Read this book now ~ before a crisis strikes ~ as a kind of personal insurance policy for how to be an effective advocate for your loved one if the time comes. As with most insurance policies, you hope you never have to use them but, should the need arise, you're always glad you invested in preplanning.

The book was inspirational and taught me a lot about the disease- things I never knew; but when I read the summary for this book, I thought it was going to be a story, not a research paper. Yes, Ms. Black does tell snippets of her mother's story every other chapter, but there is so much nitty gritty info in between- unless you want to know the entire history of the disease, don't buy this book. I did, thinking I would get an in depth view into the life of a family affected by polio, and instead got, for the most part, an essay on the history and effects of polio. Please don't be mislead by the title- it's a good title, but it conveys a personal and intimate sense which is not entirely present in the book itself. I hope my experience with this book helps you in the future.

Kristen not only is a gorgeous vibrant woman, she is a master of raw food diet. Her explanation of the different types of diets that people eat is worth the price of the book alone! Kristen breaks it all down, makes it easy to understand and best of all, shares her vast knowledge with anyone who wants to make raw a way of life.
I loved this book and will tell everyone to get a copy for their raw library!

Whether you are already committed to a Raw lifestyle or thinking of dipping your toe in the water, this book will inspire you. Kristen's Raw provides practical tips, motivation and real life advice that will make the transition into Raw a reality.

I love the ideas she provides on getting kids to eat more Raw fruits and veggies. She suggests making a game out of eating a rainbow of foods each day and how to offer healthy choices. As a mom trying to instill a holistic approach to nutrition in her young children's lives, I appreciate all the creative ideas I can get.

While just starting to incorporate Raw into my everyday routine, this book both validates all of my struggles and motivates me to push forward so that I too can feel HEALTHY, HAPPY and ENERGIZED!

Kristen mixes just the right amount of facts, studies, and personal knowledge to get your head shaking in agreement. I wasn't overwhelmed at all nor did I feel a sense that I "HAD to start tommorrow." I recommend this book for anyone new to raw or already leading a High Raw lifestyle. Big thanks to Kristen for your knowledge and willingess to help all of us "get it."

I can't say enough great things about this book, it's that amazing. If you or someone you know are new to raw foods or have been struggling to stay raw, then you will greatly benefit from this book. It's not just about why you should go raw, what raw foods are and what to buy (although these topics are covered in great detail). It's about empowering you to make a lifestyle change so that you can live a long, healthy and happy life. Who doesn't want that?

Kristen touches on a variety of subjects, some of which are; how raw works, expectations, cravings, raw questions, getting family/friends support, traveling, and one of my favorites, setting yourself up to win (this alone is worth the price of the book). She provides fun, invaluable tips; inspiration and motivation to help you reach your goal of transitioning to a raw food lifestyle.

One of the things I love most about this book is the love, passion and energy she has for raw foods. She makes it fun and not restrictive and provides you with options if you're not looking to be 100% raw. You won't be able to put the book down!

I'm in the process of transitioning to a raw food lifestyle and have quite a few raw food books. This is the first one I've come across that provides you with the advice and tools you need to make it through the challenging times. I really wish I'd had this book when I first started. This really is a "diamond in the rough" and would make an excellent gift. Check out her raw recipe books. They are fun, easy to prepare and taste fantastic!

One of the best Raw books out there!!!

This is honestly one of the best down right, straight and to the point raw food books on the market. Kristen does a great job at succinctly organizing EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know about starting and succeeding at this raw foods and vegan lifestyle. With chapters about "How Raw Works", "Exercise & Physical Fitness", "A Day in the life of Raw", and "14-Day Sample Meal Plan", this book encourages and motivates you to begin and stay raw and vegan.

In Kristen's first chapter she says, "If you're looking to experience life at its fullest, then you definitely need to start incorportaing more Raw food into your daily food choices. If you're looking to be the happiest you've ever been, then this is the answer." And I say if you are looking to get started on the raw journey and are ready to have a ton of knowledge organized in such a fashion that it's super easy to follow...then BUY THIS BOOK!

I was so impressed and eager to continue on my raw journey. As a person who is already 100% raw, I knew that it would be a great read, but it was so much more. I learned a ton of stuff like how to travel in the raw more easily . Wow, I read it right before taking a weekend trip. What a difference. The chapter is broken down into car trips (short), car trips (long), airplane trips (short), airplane trips (long).

So, overall this is an amazing raw food book. The cover is gorgeous and vibrant Adn the message is energizing and full of life. Kristen's book really delivers.

The author of this book provides extensive information about how to balance your diet from a combined Western/Asian perspective, however, the book would be more useful if she had provided comprehensive summaries of the information. She does give short summaries of specific sections, but since a lot of the information applies to several aspects of a person, a quick reference summary of types of people and their corresponding needs/solutions would be helpful. You are going to have to compile this for yourself, and it will be time consuming. I do think she gives useful information here though, so I would recommend this book.

About four years ago I was very ill. I had sinus infections, colds, and bronchitis just about every month for about a year and a half. I was stressed out at work and in my personal life, put on 30 pounds, and developed GI problems doctors were unable to explain. Tired of traditional western medicine prescribing costly drugs which made no difference and constantly being sick, tired, and unable to focus, I decided to consult a holistic healthcare practitioner. Unable to pay the cost to have a formal in person consultation (since my healthcare did not cover it), she referred me to this book.

I felt like Linda Prout was reading my mind. Although the food choices she recommended were not at all what I was used to eating, I decided to give it a try. Within the first week I noticed a difference in how I felt. I lost 20 pounds in the first three months (without exercising) and have maintained a healthy weight since, with regular exercising and meditation. I eliminated stressors in my life as well. This book in so many ways saved my life. I have not been sick at all for the past three years. The acute asthma I developed at that time is nearly nonexistent. I enjoy the foods Linda suggests for my body type and have minimized the others which are not so good. I love it and swear by it!

Almost didn't buy this book but so glad I did.

I have never written a review before, but I feel compelled to comment on this book. I read the reviews of Live in the Balance but was still hesitant to buy. I have a strong background in nutrition, eating for health, alternative medicine, etc...and was unconvinced Prout would have anything new to say. I am so thankful I made the purchase anyway. Highly readable, incredibly well researched with all studies and facts documented, this book is changing my life and the life of my family. Plagued with terrible allergies, eczema, and low energy, I feel better after following some of Prout's suggestion, IN ONE WEEK. I feel like a new person. Some of the information is also helping alleviate a family member's struggle with worsening depression. I am introducing some of the principle to make food choices for my two small children and already it seems to be helping boost their immune systems--an ongoing battle in our house. I have learned so much from this book. It is much more readable and well formatted than Food and Healing by Ammemarie Colbin (another excellent and informative book on food and healing). Buy this book.

I published a long review of the book on my web site, but to put it simply, this book could change your life. Anyone with even a passing interest in diet and nutrition will find it enjoyable and educational. It is a must read if you have any health or medical issues or if you are at all frustrated with your current eating patterns.

The book is full of information, with every sentence seeming to contain a new nutritional idea or fact. All the facts and figures are incredibly well researched and documented. If you are new to the concepts in the book, you will find it easy to follow and understand. If you are already well versed in the Traditional Chinese approach to diet and nutrition you will find it a wonderful source of new information and a great addition to your reference shelf.

This is a great book if you are tired of the "one approach fits all" way of eating. It examines the time-proven message of Traditional Chinese Medicine: we can improve our health by changing what we eat. I have been following the eating plan for dampness for three weeks and have lost 5 lbs effortlessly. I have more energy and no cravings. Best of all, I feel in control of what I am eating and doing. Linda presents the information in a clear way that is easy to follow. If you want to make the right changes in your life to regain and maintain your health, this is the book for you.

She has again, as in her other books, made available to the world, simple life nuturing and sustaining methods that will enable all those who read her book to start or stay on their path of living in a vibrant and healthy way. Through her books and workshops I have been able to heal myself of seasonal allergies and have also begun to heal some deep ancestorial/family issues. I recommend this book highly.

I have read this book and found it to be absolutely wonderful. It is filled with helpful, practical and attainable suggestions for developing a daily practice that will bring you back to yourself. Bri Maya tells her own healing journey which is healing in itself just reading it. The stories of those she has encountered along her path and how she has helped them help themselves are so moving and brought me to tears more than once. I highly recommend this book, and not only for women. There are healing therapies recommended for women, but are good for men to know as well. The food information, setting up your kitchen, realizing that food is so much more than just fuel is information that will change your life, and again, show you your truest self. I recently gave this book to a friend. She said, "Well, I don't think I'll read it but I think it will give good energy just being on my bookshelf." I agreed with what she said about the good energy, but I recommend reading this book. It is written by an enlightened woman teaching us in a time when so many things pull us away from our path, or dharma and ourselves. This book is one opportunity to look within and gives suggestions to develop a practice of doing so in our daily lives.

As a beginner in the study of Vedic Practice, Bri Maya has written in words much that is wonderful, soft and serene. Perhaps the most difficult portion to describe is what is written between her lines.

The tender and affectionate tone of her words conveys all that I have hoped Ayurveda would be. She is a shinning example of what can be accomplished when a science based on infinite wisdom is applied with love.

Bri Maya has titled her book " A Womans Book of Ayurvedic Healing" and while I don't know her true intent here surely this is a lovely book for anyone. I was in awe and am now an official fan.

Bri. Maya Tiwari is a rare soul who is totally dedicated to helping people renew their spiritual selves. For years I have been aware of the healing value of food, breath, and sound, but this book helped me understand these practices as interrelated, spiritual concepts. The Path of Practice was a great, general boost for me to get serious about my spiritual practice and I have since been inspired to maintain a daily yoga practice. And I never imagined that grinding mustard seeds by hand would induce such a calmness and meditative stillness. And, there is much wonderful information in this book that is applicable to men too.

Not just for athletes

Review Date: 2008-03-09
I am not an athlete, but I found this book very useful. I'd ignored it for a few years but recently acquired it. It goes through just about every Pilates mat exercise that I have ever come across (most other manuals omit at least a few of them) and explains the purpose of the exercise (something many manuals neglect to do). They also include an extensive listing of the Wall Series, the Standing Series and a variety of Reformer on the Mat exercises as well as some other hard-to-categorize exercises that usually show up at the end of some practices, like Bent Knee Lifts and Jumps (which, by the way, look very much like the later developed Lotte Berk Method warmups).

This is an excellent reference for the general Pilates practitioner, but athletes will also be able to utilize this. For each sport, they list common injuries and targeted muscles, then prescribe usually two workouts and the schedule that should be followed on the off-season and training season. Obviously, nothing replaces a one-on-one discussion with a knowledgable Pilates instructor, but this should be useful for those who don't have access to one. Sports included are Swimming, Running, Skiing, Tennis and a few others I don't recall off the top of my head.

This was a great concept that was very well-executed. Given the level of knowledge and expertise, I'd love to see these authors come out with a similar book addressing common injuries and/or postural problems.

Excellent resource for athletes, Pilates students and Pilates instructors.

I was pleased to finally find this book a few years ago, as I was looking for a way to help with my fencing. As a book geared towards athletes, it assumes that you don't simply want to "look and feel fit", but build a real core that helps you become a stronger athlete, no matter what your sport.

I appreciated that the illustrations of the exercises (which are very well done) featured both authors, drving home the idea that Pilates is a fitness regimen for BOTH men and women who want to be stronger. Too many times books about exercise systems focus on one gender, which can turn people off... I often felt that Pilates suffered from being marketed too strongly towards women when it is a very universal exercise system.

I also very much liked that the core exercises (there are many) were ones that did not require any extra equipment, relying on your own body weight and range of motion to accomplish the movement. The sample exercise programs at the rear of the book emphasize this. Other sections of the book that include weights, bars, etc. are considered as supplemental to the core system and can be added as needed. Personally, this helped me to stay with the exercises, because I didn't need to have anything with me to do them.

An excellent book. I highly recommend it.

I generally buy health, exercise and nutrition books written for men. There's much knowledge to be had from this book, dealing with the 'before' of going on a diet. She sort of writes in the style of David Zinczenko (editor of Men's Health magazine and author of 'The ABs Diet'), which integrates humor with serious facts. It lightens up the atmosphere of the reading. She also gives sample meal plans to follow, but the book goes much more beyond the aspects of a diet. There's too much to tell - get a copy and read it - then put it into practice. I recommend also utilizing Gregg Avedon's 'Muscle Chow'. There are tons of recipes to follow. Only caution, the Avedon book falls apart, so have some duct tape handy!

Granted it doesn't touch on veganism or vegetarianism too much but, but it does write out pretty specific diets to plan from.

I wish women would write books for women like this. Very direct, to the point, in an easy relaxed style with no unecessary "fluff". Just the facts - told how it is. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book.

Absolutely amazing! Could not be better!

I can't believe this book has such a low price. Fitness and nutrition is an area where you can easily spend a lot of money (coachs, nutritionist, gyms, special diets, equipment).

On the other side of the coin you can also spend a lot of money if you don't have a healthy lifestyle (doctors to treat diabetes, hypertension, heart disease).

Well, here is a guide that might very well save you tons of money and change your life for the better.

Just the first chapter of the book is worth its price, by far. In that chapter the author gives a general description of what an average guy would eat through out a complete day. As she describes this hypotetic guy's diet she explains what happens to your body at each stage, she explains all the mistakes we commonly make when eating.

In the second part of the first chapter she tells you what you could do instead during a complete day, she explains what you should eat, at what time, in what amounts and why.

Her explanation of the glygemic index and its relation to glucose levels opened a new world for me. I finally have come to understand why I was having terrible lows of energy during the day.

I believe those explanations would be enough to get you on the right track and start seeing results. With results I mean, more energy, less fat, better feeling in general.

She builds from there and each chapter is devoted to understanding what you need to do to achieve specific results. The last chapter is as good as the first one. It has a lot of tips on what you can do to improve your diet and how it can become part of the life of a very busy guy.

The advice in this book is thorough and most of the time she is on the right track. The only aspects I did't like was how she promoted milk, eggs, and soy. But I really don't blame her for that, since there is much controversy around dairy and soy.

There are books like The China Study that constitute a serious analysis of why certain very common foods are actually the cause for many of the health problems in the western world. So, basically when it comes to dairy and soy you should read both sides of the debate and make up your mind as what you think might be good for you.

Other than that, the book is just amazing, and I did't really mind much about her mention of dairy since she really doesn't talk too much about it.

It is clear to me that the author knows a lot about the scientific aspect of food, and some of her explanations go in that direction, still you don't feel it like a heavy read. So, I believe the tone of the book is perfect for an average guy who just wants to know what he should really eat, when, how, and in what amount.

The best book on nutrition I have seen so far!

I think if you read this one and The China Study, you will have almost all information needed to make a sound decision when thinking about your diet and your goals!

By the way there are tons of menus you can use. I really really liked that, because the books on nutrition I have seen have very poor menus or ideas to get you started.

I have to make something clear. I liked the China Study more for what it promotes than for what it forbides. According to the study you should eat tons of plants, fruits, vegetables. And even though the author of the China study promotes the elimination of animal protein from diet, he actually compromises and says if you want to eat animal protein, do it but still try to focus on eating a lot more vegetables. So, before anyone start a long debate here, I have to say I do eat dairy! Just that not in the amounts I used to! Which is by the way the advice given by the author of The Powerfood Nutrition Plan to lactose intolerant, to eat yougrth in small amounts.

This book is fantastic. Everything tastes like gourmet cooking.
Some of the recipes are fairly simple while others are not. This book is great for people who love to cook and want low-fat alternatives that taste great. Fair warning though this isn't one of those quickie meal recipe books. It is the best cookbook I own, regardless of the low-fat. It gives tons of information on exotic as well as common ingredients. It is a great gourment recipe book as well as instructional cooking book.

Having Lupus I have been searching and searching for a book that truly expresses what I am going through. When I started reading Pumpkin I realized that I had found that book. I read the book in one sitting and am going to suggest it to my family. I am experiencing much of what Eileen went through, it's as if the book were about me personally. Patricia does a remarkable job conveying Eileen's thoughts although she did not have the disease herself. She really understood her daughter well and Eileen was so lucky for that. I would recommend this book for others who have Lupus as well as their family members.

I read this book as I have recently gotten involved with the Dorough Lupus Foundation which was set up after Howie Dorough of the Backstreet Boys lost his sister Caroline to Lupus.

This story is about Eileen and was written by her mother. Eileen fought hard against the effects of Lupus. Every setback that was thrown at her she fought against, and in the end, she lost. But her strength and perserverance moved me.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. Lupus is a disease that is not as widely known as others, but is very devastating. We need to to find a cure for this illness so no more people die from it.

A very good book

I thought this was a good book, and very easy to read. I have a friend with lupus, and she is very much like the main lady in this book. It is good to see how other people deal with these things. I think the author knows how to touch the heart of people and that is a very special gift. I read this book, and Stolen Moments by Fisher, and both have helped me in a big way to understand my friend with this illness. Hope they find a cure for it soon. I would recommend this book for anyone dealing wtih any illness, personally or with someone they love.

Once I began reading I could not put it down. It made me laugh and brought me to tears. It is such a beautiful tribute to the author's daughter and allows Eileen to be loved and admired by people who never had the joy of meeting her. God bless her family and their strength, it was truly inspiring.

I have a sister who died of Lupus and reading this book really does explain what goes on in your life when someone close to you is ill. Even though you feel hopeless, even though you're scared for that person, you know you have to be strong and cherish every single moment. I enjoyed this book because it reminds you how important your life is. Eileen had brothers, sisters and parents who loved her and even though she was sick she tried to make the most of it which is inspirational to all of us.
