I cook from this book several times a week and I've yet to find something that I wouldn't cook again or that I wouldn't serve to guests. I'm not the best or most patient cook, so I really appreciate the quick and easy aspect. A couple of things to consider - one of the ways they reduce calories is by using veggies such as peppers and zucchini to stretch normally high calorie meals. Also, many of the recipes are very flavorful, not necessarily spicy, but lots of strong sauces and spicing. If you don't like those things, this might not be the book for you....luckily we do.

I got this book from the library and tried several receipes before I decided to order several copies for my family and friends. I hate to count (or even think about) calories, and this book does it for you. You do not have to be on a diet to use this book. The receipes have lots of flavor and variety.

I am the very definition of a foodie. I'm also health conscious.

WOW! I've had this book for a few months, and I got it used figuring if I didn't like it, no big deal. This week so far I've made the chicken pot pie, sugar cookies, and pumpkin spice muffins. They all have come out wonderfully and you cannot tell they are low-cal!! Tonight I'm making the mustard dill pork chops with pumpnickel stuffing and tomorrow onion & pepper braciole! I bet you didn't think you could eat that stuff and have it come in at under 400 calories!!!

I'm not even a reader of family circle, but this book is probably one of my most used cookbooks :)

I have never enjoyed diet books and have always felt that diets really only promote unhealthy eating. But this book is different. The recipes were delicious. (I have a difficult time believing that each serving falls within the calorie requirement...they're that good.) It also emphasizes portion control with food variety which actually gave me a more balanced and healthy way of eating. I don't alternate between starving and overstuffed. I even do better at restaurants. I don't know if I've lost weight yet but I feel better and that was my goal in the first place.

Good recipes but inconvenient number of servings

I got this book as I'm always on a lookout for great tasting healthy recipes. I have made a few dishes from the book and all of them turned out well (blueberry cottage cheese pancakes were especially good). So I have no complaint about the quality of the meals. However, our family consists of two people and I usually cook for two nights - read 4 servings. The MAJORITY of the recipes are for 6 servings. It is highly inconvenient as 6 doesn't adjust easily to 4, and I don't like freezing leftovers.
Because of this issue, I rarely look in the book when I'm searching for a recipe.
If you have a big family or don't mind freezing leftovers then I would reccomend the book, as the recipes are good. But if you're single or have two people in your household, you might want to look elsewhere for your everyday cookbook.

I was on this diet for a year a few years ago. A friend and I walked for an hour a day for 5 - 7 days a week also. I stuck with this diet, which just became a way of life that I enjoyed. I lost 40 or more pounds, which brought me down to 126. My walking friend's husband passed away and we stopped walking. For the first few months I slowly began to eat what I wanted again but I had built so much muscle on this diet that it took a good 6 months or more to even begin to gain weight. Before I went on the diet I had sinus problems alot. When I ate right and exercised I never had sinus headaches, or any kind of headache. I was never sick with a cold or any other problem and I felt great! It's approved by every association out there; heart, diabetes, ect. It's the diet I go back to when I am serious about taking care of myself. I just started it the past couple weeks and plan to stick with it. It works and is healthy and provides what your body needs. They explain why you eat what you eat. It's a very good education in nutrition and diet that you will use your whole life. I love it.

I purchased this book in March of 2002 and began my "diet" in April. I was obese to say the least. I have since lost a total of 60 pounds and overall 22 inches (13 from my hips and waist alone)I am sure that my personal motivation has had a lot to do with my success and I now have more energy than I have had in years. I am now able to wear a pair of jeans that I purchased my senior year of high school (I know... why would you save them?) which was 15 years and 2 children ago. I am absolutely NEVER hungry and actually crave drinking water now. (which I used to gag just at the thought of drinking) I have promoted this book to EVERYONE I know and even laugh about the fact that it was published so long ago, but still applies and is so useful.

My additional motivation is that I have gone from a size 22W pants to a comfortable 12 and often a 10. I run /walk 3 - 6 miles each day with my son, something I would not have been able to do 6 months ago and this also gives us some special time together.

I will say that this is obsessive, and my family hates to eat with me. Everytime we cook or eat together I do a lot of "do you know how much fat that has" or "I can't believe you ate sausages for breakfast!"

If you are even thinking of buying this book ... DO IT... RIGHT NOW!

I first saw this diet in " Ladies Home Journal" back in 1989ish.
It had a page size color chart to figure your fat index, which the paperback book lacks.

I used this diet back in 1992 and lost 48 pounds. However, during the holidays over the years, the weight crept back.

Now my wife and I are both on this diet and in the first two weeks, I have lost:

14 pounds

2 inches in the hips

3 inches in the waist

1 1/2 inches across the breast

My wife keeps her weight secret, even after 14 years of marriage, but she has lost 4 inches in the waist, 3 inches in the hips, and 2 inches across the breasts, in our first two weeks. HINT: Buy a scale with a memory!
I would say the diet still works. In addition, I don't feel any hunger pangs between meals.

The exercise is important, but drinking 64 oz of water each day is more important, to wash out those fatty acids that accumulate from burning your stored up fat. DON'T WAIT until you are thirsty, start with water before the first cup of coffee.

There is no mention of increasing your water intake after drinking caffeinated drinks, that in hot weather would leave you dehydrated. The typical rule is to drink 2 times the amount of water for each amount of caffienated diet soda. Apparently, the fluid intake and outgo with 64 ounces of any liquid is enough to flush the system.

Our sample supper meal for one person:

Fruit: 4 oz high pulp Orange juice

1 Vege: 2 cups salad mix with 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar dressing

Protein; 1 Vege; 2 starch & 1/2 dairy:
2 yellow no fat tortillos
1/2 can no fat refried beans
1/2 can diced tomatoes with green chillies
grated cheese on top

Heated in microwave 2 1/2 minutes. Magnifique!

I whole heartedly recommend this diet. DON"T FORGET to exercise at least 30 minutes every other day. Walk, spade your garden, put up stuff upstairs or like I'm doing this morning...unloading 20 sacks of humas, 40 pounds each, which I found last night @ 49 cents each.

I love this book! This is the only "diet" I have ever followed and I am still my high school weight at 45 years old. I first ordered the paperback from the back of the Special K cereal box at least ten years ago and have completely worn out the book. I've just ordered a hardcover edition hoping it will last into my old age. If you're new to this book, keep in mind the fat comes off slowly - replaced by muscle. It's not an overnight diet - but a forever body change. Give yourself a couple of months to really see the difference. Also, you won't be hungry. The only thing I do differently from the book is to have two starches at lunch and one at dinner; this seems to work better for me. Also, I've found that water-packed tuna with BBQ sauce for flavor really sticks with you. Have fun and be creative!

I only had to read about 1/2 of the 1st chapter of this great book(I dont like to read), but thats all i needed to understand why "diets" dont work. This book is a must for anyone who want to lose weight(fat). I lost 25 pounds in about 40 days. The concept of this "diet" is so easy i had to slow my loss down because i was afraid of losing too much too fast. Now that the holidays are over, i'm going for another 25 pounds. My wife lost about 33 pounds also.

The Fearless Caregiver: How to Get the Best Care for Your Loved One and Still Have a Life of Your Own (Capital Cares)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is easy to read and very informative. I sent a copy to my Mom who cares for my Dad. He has Parkinson's Disease. She has introduced it to her caregivers support group and they all love it. My Paralyzed Veterans Chapter will hold its first caregivers retreat next year and each caregiver will get a copy of this book. It's that good. As a former Paramedic and Military Medic I see in this book everything needed to help a caregiver.

This book reinforced many things I've known, but needed to hear. It also pointed me to some great resources that I'd never known existed. I recommend it for everyone in a caregiving role, whether the active day-to-day caregiver or a caregiver who lives a worried distance away. It is written in short chapters or articles - easy to pick up in a spare moment.

Caregiving usually doesn't happen gradually. Families are often thrust into the situation because of a crisis, without any experience on how to manage the overwhelming stress, responsibilities, legalities, and medical aspects. Gary Barg has done an excellent job sorting it all out with 'The Fearless Caregiver', guiding the reader through the maze. Very easy to read, motivating, empowering, and highly recommended!

Gary was a welcomed guest on my Internet Radio Program, 'Coping with Caregiving' on wsRadio. Online archive available.

It is about time that someone tackled the issues that caregivers face. It can often be a lonely and confusing time. I was a caregiver for my mother a few years ago and looked everywhere for a book like this. I needed something to walk me through all of the things I didn't understand. This a well-crafted, easy to read and understand book that all caregivers should read. I wish it had been available five years ago! I recommend it highly.

As a pediatrician and a new parent, I found "food fights" extremely helpful. It is a quicks read that gives practical information to parents about topics that stress us all out. I have started recommending this book to parents at all of our early well-child checks. It helps parents find answers to everyday feeding questions without having to call or wait for the next appointment, or feel like they are reading a textbook.

Food Fights is practical, funny, down to earth instruction book that all parents should read- preferably when their kids are young, so they will grow up with life-long healthy eating habits. This book reads like your best girlfriend chatting with you about shared challenges with your kids, not like some ivory-towered medical advice from doctors with no kids. What other book addresses the "5 Second Rule"? It's obvious both authors have first hand experience with real life "food fights"- and this is a fabulous way to share their combined "mommy" and "doctor" knowledge. Make this your standard baby shower gift- especially for the second kid in a family, because this gift will last far longer than a cute outfit.

This book is a great overview of all things food related. Drs. Shu and Jana do an excellent job of addressing topics as varied as introducing foods, ensuring adequate veggie intake, food on the road, and brushing, all in an easy to read format (which is critical for most busy parents!) The book made me realize how little veggies my son eats (sadly) and how I've been slacking on offering them to him. They do a great job of covering topics and offering suggestions without making you feel like a bad parent. I'd definitely recommend the book for anyone who has to feed children! These days, in our Western culture, for many man and woman over 40, the aging process has become something to fear. Which is utterly crazy, given that most people nowadays are barely half way through their lives at that point. It's like wanting to leave the restaurant somewhere in the middle of the main course and without tasting the dessert at all.
I liked this book because it is one of the few to look deeply into the whole adventure of aging and to broadcast to the world that the later decades of life have a different - and surprisingly wonderful - agenda all of their own. It is time for us older folk to stop cringing about getting older but to open to the process and re-own our place as 'wise elders.' As I was writing my own book - ELDERWOMAN - which is specifically for women, this wise man's book was a marvellous resource for me. It is a full, rich book, worth reading and re-reading. The exercises are useful and practical and the ideas are powerful. Highly recommended.

The two chapters in this book that I appreciated the most were Chapter 8 Mentoring: Seeding the Future with Wisdom where on reads that modern day families all to often turn to some 'professional' when it comes to issues involving our families, and these 'experts' don't even have to have kids or even be close to their own families. Its the sheep skin with some Latin on it that makes them more knowledgeable than our own elders.

And Chapter 9 Elders as Healers of Family, Community and Gaia. I ignored the Gaia aspect since its not something I am into. But the rest is pretty on target as far as how the inter generational health benefits are when children and young adults are around older people who have alot to offer, and how what they offer is more patience, a sense of humor and secure grounding that equates to security.

From Age-Ing to Sage-Ing has been a personal inspiration for me. Being recently retired, it has shown me that it's important to take all of the knowledge and wisdom that I have gained and give it back to the younger generation. If all of us healthy elders volunteered some of our wisdom in the workforce, our Social Security crisis would be greatly diminished. This is a wonderfully timely book with an important message.

Author Deborah Morris Coryell, who has worked in the health field for more than 25 years and has written numerous books on wellness, now takes pen to paper in order to shed light on the process of healing from grief and loss. She observes that "We only grieve for that which we have loved and, the nature of life being transitory, love and loss are intimately connected," among many other hidden truths about the essence of grief. Eloquent and poignant, Good Grief: Healing Through The Shadow Of Loss is a touching journey toward understanding the regret that makes us human.

We lost our 39 year old son in September. Although he had been ill for a number of years, his death was unexpected. We were glad he was no longer in pain and was finally at peace. At the same time, we miss him and tears are always quite near. GOOD GRIEF was a positive, clearly written essay about the author's own grieving. She espressed so well the feelings I didn't know how to put into words. Her experience gave me a way of grieving that was real and authentic. We will always miss our son. I will always be a Mom who has a son who has died. However, just as his life had meaning, so does his death. Just as he was one of my spirtual teachers while he was alive, he continues to help me to grow throught his death. GOOD GRIEF has given me a guideline for this painful part of my life. I know I will go through this period of growth, not around it. I want to completely experience one of the greatest losses of my life and use that awareness to be of service to others. GOOD GRIEF will help me to accomplish that goal. After reading the book, I immediately read it again. I also sent copies of it to a number of people who also loved our son and were grieving his death. They agreed with me about the value of GOOD GRIEF in their grieving process.

Deborah Coryell wrote this book for me. It was as if she looked into my soul and saw my need. I unexpectantly lost my daughter 3 days after Xmas 2004 and have been trying to cope ever since. Deborah Coryell reached out (through this book) and pulled me into a new realm of healing. I plan to reread it again and again. If fact, I am about to order 2 more copies for my other two daughters (I don't want to give up my copy). So much of what Deborah Coryell writes is what I believe and feel but she puts it in words for me. She also introduced me to a new way of viewing the transition from physical life to "...the divine spark...dispersed into the universe." Her words and understanding of loss, grieving and healing are powerful. I am so grateful for having found her (book) at this time in my life.

This book is well-organized, highly readable, and extremely interesting. It was just the right mix of research information, along with dosage and uses.

The amino acids in the human body are proving to be potent healing substances. This book reveals the findings of research in the 1980s and 1990s on the beneficial role of the aminos in Alzheimer's, cancer, depression, heart conditions, stress and many other disease states.

The different amino acids are discussed in chapters according to type: Aromatic, Sulphur, Urea Cycle, Glutamate, Threonine and Branched Chain. Their food sources, nutrient interactions and proven benefits are given in detail.

The therapeutic functions of specific aminos include pain relief (Phenylalanine), fighting addiction (Tyrosine), treatment of Parkinson's (Methionine), heart protection (Homocysteine), herpes killer (Lysine). Many of them also play a part in immune stimulation or as anti-oxidants.

There are three appendices: 1. The Problems of Vegetarianism. 2. The Much Maligned Egg: The Best Amino Acid Food. 3. Continuing Breakthroughs in Amino Acids. This informative book with its good news concludes with an extensive bibliography, a glossary of terms and an index.

Everyone can benefit from the use of supplemental amino acids. This excellent book shows how to integrate them in one's own health management programme. Similar helpful books include The Amino Revolution by Erdmann and Amino Acids In Therapy by Chaitow.

My family and I went to Disney for our annual winter-break vacation in 2009. We had this book for a few weeks before our trip, brought it with us to Disney, and carried it wherever we went. It is PERFECT. The Cast Members in Disney referred to the book as "The Blue Bible," with good reason.

Anywhere you can go inside Disney World - by foot, car, or boat - is in this book concerning its healthy options. It even includes jogging paths and menu suggestions. Honest, invaluable recommendations for Disney Dining Plans, ADR's, restaurants, menu choices, and hotel activities, all in one paperback book.

Be sure to follow its advice regarding the fitness must-do's and the "Eat Tips". With this book, my family and I had the perfect Disney vacation.

If you are going to Disney, you simply must buy this book.

Aside from this book's generic first chapter, the remainder of this 2009 guide is full of beneficial insight. As a registered dietitian, I often approach books with some skepticism, as I have found many popular ones to be too gimmicky, too extreme, nutritionally imbalanced, or too unrealistic to be followed over the long-haul. Imagine my surprise when I read The Healthy Guide. Author Dan Green has managed to simplify science and draw attention to the Disney health perils in a witty, warm, encouraging, positive, and entertaining way. He explains in simple, easy to understand language how to reprogram your body to support healthful weight loss. Along the way, he encourages people to consume more protein, fiber, and healthful unsaturated fats, and less saturated fats, trans fats, and sugar, all of which can certainly support weight management efforts and have heart-health and other benefits as well.

There are no other Disney guide books on the market that takes such a very positive approach, shows people what to consume more of, supports regular physical activity, and encourages people to set realistic goals--instead of striving for model-thinness, it asks people to aim simply to lose some inches from their guts which can improve not only their physical appearance but their health as well. Perhaps the greatest strength of this book is its light and encouraging tone, not to mention the illustrations which make it an easy and enjoyable read.

Having lost more than 25 pounds myself, and having maintained a healthy body weight for more than 10 years, I know first hand how tough it is to lose weight, espcically on a vacation. For me it was a slow, gradual process that took years. I would have found this book quite useful about 15 years ago (before I became a registered dietitian) when I started to change my eating and fitness habits, and now am happy to have a popular diet book to recommend to clients and the lay public.

Overall, The Healthy Guide to Disney World can be a useful resource and motivator, and can be quite helpful resource for those who are tired of extreme dieting and want to start living as they pursue a healthier weight. This book makes a great bookshelf addition for anyone who is willing to take the time to learn how the body works to improve their overall eating habitsin WDW, get more fit, and lose weight for life.

This is a hard one to review. Expertly written and unbelievably detailed, they also reveal the deepest secrets of Disney World foods and fitness, previously only known to some Cast Members.

First, the positives. If you care about nutrition and/or staying active, you won't find a better tour book for WDW, on or off the grounds - period. The author expertly steers you around the Disney complex, avoiding the crowds and taking adavantage of little known secrets (like finding organic meal options). You'll get tons of practical touring strategies, like, for example, in Magic Kingdom, making your lunch ADR's at specific hours in the day so you can have some of the attractions to yourself for a few hours in the morning. That's just one example from the book; each page is loaded with this kind of pragmatism, so even on your first trip you'll feel like a seasoned visitor.

Every healthy aspect of your trip is covered in the books, from the fitness activities to see and avoid, the restaurants to hit, the best menu items, ADR options, and Disney. Every type of traveler, from the best athlete to the recent dieter will find useful info. More than anything, while realizing how much of Disney World's healthy lifestyle options are truly still hidden to you, you'll still feel as though you're on vacation.

Lastly, this books is quite popular in the Disney community and already the ADR restaurant and meal suggestions are not so hidden. More than once I walked into a Disney restaurant, where I found a family inevitably clutching their copy of "The Healthy Guide to Disney". That is the type of endorsement this book has among Disney fans.

While this book is an incredible guidebook and you *should* use it to plan your Disney vacation, ultimately, only you alone will know what book suggestions are right for you based on your specific dietary needs and fitness level.

This is a must-have book for anyone running in the Disney marathon races. As a avid runner, I always race in the Disney marathon and half-marathon each year (Goofy Medalist). I especially look forward each year to seeing author Dan Green at the Disney Health and Fitness Expo and am so glad that he took the Disney running community's advice and wrote this book. With his great insights and race tips, this is a "must-have" for anyone registered in any of the Disney endurance series. From nutrition to race day strategies, he covers it all!

Whether you are an athlete looking to set a personal best time at this year's Disney race or just want to have a healthier Disney vacation with your entire family, this is definitely the book for you!!

There are many guidebooks available for Walt Disney World in general, but this one is by far the best for any guest serious about health and fitness. Not only is the book extremely current and continually updated, but the layout is easy to use, and it provides information that is actually useful in both planning a trip and once inside the Disney gates.

The book is well written, and is especially strong in the sections on dining, ADR's and fitness. Without question the coverage of the Disney Marathons and golf courses in this book is superior to any other guide. The restaurant information is also informative, much better than other guides, but remember that no book can completely cover all the restaurants in WDW. I have been to many of the places detailed in the book, and generally agree with the appraisals of the authors (the one exception being that I thought the O'hana meal was better than the authors did). Even if you don't completely agree with every opinion offered in the book, every claim is well reasoned and nothing is completely out to lunch.

This is the gold standard for WDW guidebooks, and I recommend it highly to anyone visiting Mickey!

I did not find this book helpful cooking with SS cookware. The generic recipes are available all over the internet and are not cookware specific. Save your money. It's overpriced and overrated.

I recently purchased a set of waterless cookware and was disappointed by the limited accompanying recipes. I was delighted to find "Healthy Meat & Potatoes" by Charles Knight, and even more delighted once I received it.

The recipes are surprisingly easy, the ingredients healthy, and the tips on using waterless cookware invaluable. I also like to cook with wine, and was excited to find wine an ingredient in some of the more gourmet recipes.

Overall, this book has already become one of the favorites in my collection and I'd recommend it to anyone with waterless cookware who is searching for information on how to get the best use out it, or anyone who wants to eat healthy and enjoy doing it.

Healthy, hearty and delightful meals are created with gentle hands and warm hearts. This I learned as a youngster growing up in the wonderful ethnic mix of New York and New Jersey, with home kitchens brimming with incredible dishes brought with care from the Old World. To those around me, good food was the nourishment of both body and soul. This harvest of flavors was the great influence of my boyhood. From the time I was old enough to know my way around the neighborhood family kitchens, I wanted to be a chef. All my dreams came true as I moved into the fascinating culinary world.

The most exciting part of this journey has been to share it all with my son and co-author Chef David Knight who is far more talented than his dad, and better looking too.

Yes, good food is a delightful, unique language, and I sincerely hope the ideas you will find in Healthy Meat and Potatoes will help you express yourself in healthful and wonderful ways.

Herbal rituals is a wonderfull invitation to experience simple herbs in an inspiring way. Reading this book I am taken away to the places the author decribes at the begining of the chapters. Following each chapter introduction there is a wealth of wisdom helping the reader to grow closer to the green friends of the earth. I rate this book on equal foting with Susun Weed's Healing Wise. Truly a valueable addition to any wisewomans library. Blessed Be.

Susun Weed herself gave a beautiful review on the back cover of this book. I take her advice and keep this book with me. It goes on walks in the woods with me, it rests on my night table, it even bathes with me. If you are seeking a wise guide to living the old and wild way then you have found it. Buy this book as quick as you can, you will not regret it. It's a rare thing, these kinds of books.

I first encountered this book at a wonderful little shop in AnnArbor Michigan and was unable to put it down even though I really wasn't able to afford it at the time. I went ahead and spent what little money I had left and have never been dissapointed.
