An excellent book on magnetics, easy to read and understand. I was introduced to magnetic health products by a friend and have never felt better in my life. Sleeping on a magnetic mattress has convinced me of the power of magnets in health and wellness. I have a 10 year old springer spaniel with hip displaysia who also sleeps on magnets, she is an entirely new dog, more energetic and with less discomfort. After reading this book I can now comfortably talk magnets with my friends and family and highly recommend their use for a better quality of life.

Dr. Ronald Lawrence once again displays his views on "other forms" of health care. Having been an advocate of "alternative medicine" for many years one can read this book with joy and anticipated insight by a doctor that is steps ahead of the rest when it comes to alternative health care in the USA. Highly recommended reading for all.

This book helped me learn how to apply magnets to my body, what to expect, and how to communicate this knowledge to my neurologist. After suffering from a spinal cord injury and a cervical fusion the remainder of my discs were collapsing and I was suffering from horrible headaches and muscle spasms. Neurologists said I needed more operations and would end-up in a wheelchair if I didn't have them. Now, my doctor cannot believe the change and either can I. This book is VERY easy to understand and was hard for me to put down. I have recommended it to several people with disabilities of all sorts. We all know there is no magic wand. However, Dr Lawrence has relayed all the important information about the benefits and also misconceptions of magnet therapy. This book has helped me find a way to live with a problem I've had since a car accident in 1991. Get the facts so you dont waste your money on the many different magnetic devices on the market. Be an informed consumer and be pain free. I look forward to more of his writings on this topic.

What most men need to know

This book is just full of good information you need to know but aren't taught anywhere. I'm a man and I know that I look and feel more confident when I look as good as I can. This book tells you how to do that and it's practical too...not flashy - just classy. It's nice to know that my favorite shirts are broadcloth material - I now look for them in the stores or online. That standard shoes should include loafers, boots and a pair of wing tips - none of which I had before - but I do now - and they look great. That you should pay attention to the watch you wear - because others do. That you should wash your face twice a day, that you should shave after the shower so the room is steamy...If you are wanting to change your image to one of a well groomed, well dressed man, reading this book is a great start.

I bought this for myself (I am a man) because I saw excerpts on msn and I thought the writing style was excellent. The book did not disappoint. It reads well, has a lot of nice photos and a listing of merchants in the back. I would not follow the author's advice to the letter, because we all have different styles, but I picked up a lot of helpful information. Although I have always enjoyed shopping for clothes, I ended up with too many clothes, rather than just enough high quality items. I do think the book will have to come out every two or three years with new editions as styles change. For instance, Boston now champions flat front pants instead of pleats and leather soles rather than rubber. In general, he laments dressing down or "business casual." These things change, although he definitely stays away from trendy fashions in favor of more traditional garb. A thoroughly enjoyable and well-written book.

When I heard that your second book was coming out, I was so overjoyed. I just finished reading it on yesterday and wanted to write just to say thank you! You are definitely a God-send. I want you to know that your material and advice has helped cultivate who I have become in terms of my appearance. I didn't come from a "rich" background, from childhood I always dreamed that after I got my education, I wanted to have the appearance of all of those I had admired through the years. Your book has and will help me make the right decisions in regard to what to wear, when to wear, how to wear. I have just moved to a metropolitan area and "image is everything." I am so self-concious at times because I am from Oklahoma and we don't know the first thing about dressing. Moving, I feel so countrified when I go out, I never know if I am fitting in or not. Thanks for the time and effort you put in to helping "brothers" out on what they need to do. "Make Over Your Man," has helped me achieve an inspiration and confidence I need to continue to assert myself. Kudos to you!

This book is designed to enable the caring woman to take charge of the dressing of the man in her life, and make him over. Filled with excellent pictures and tons of sage advice, this book covers everything from shoes to suit coats (no one wears hats anymore, apparently), and everything down to underwear and cufflinks, and even grooming tips. This is the must-have book for any man!

Let me just say that I found this to be a great book. Now, I am not a woman, but in truth a man can benefit enormously from reading this book. I found this book to be very informative, both in its broad outlines and in its details. I think that this is a great book, and I highly recommend it!

MAKE OVER YOUR MAN is a beautiful instructional book guiding women on how to dressing the men in their lives. The intent of the book is to take the average boring wardrobe and transform it into a whole new look bringing out the best in your man. It covers every wardrobe imaginable, even down to the basics, and offers tips on things such as manicures and pedicures, organizing a man's closet, and how to tie a perfect tie. Chapter by chapter, the book offers tips, instructions, charts, photographs and even one-on-one celebrity makeovers to give you all the tools necessary to arm yourself against readying your man for a whole new look. Some of the celebrity makeovers include Tyra Banks and her dad Don Banks, Patti LaBelle and her son Zuri Edwards, and Star Jones with three male friends.

I'd recommend this book to both men and women as a "must have book" that details fashion in a way that isn't boring, but instead colorful, fun, and takes the work out of convincing the guy in your life that a change is needed. The photography helps this book stand out from others sitting on the shelves.

"Meal by Meal" - a recipe book for mindful eating
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-27
"Meal by Meal" is more than a book - it is a meal companion. The "daily meditation" format books have been around for many years now: go to any Goodwill or Salvation Army store and you'll find a handful. This one, however, in my prediction, will be on the self-help orbit for a very, very long time.

Here's why. Disordered eating - be it of compulsive/conditioned or emotional/coping type - is a habit. Any habit is a stimulus-response pattern. Big Ben (London, UK) chimes 12 pm - must be lunch time. Big Ben (Pittsburgh Steelers) is on the field - it's beer and nachos time. Whatever the habit, a stimulus (e.g. to eat) is conditioned to a response (e.g. eating). The only way to break an association is form a new one. Habits - as we are told by behavior modification gurus - can't be un-learned, but only over-learned.

And this is where the "daily meditation" format comes in handy. Altman - a former Buddhist monk and an author of "The Inner Meal" - is "channeling" the paradigm of mindfulness. You've heard all about it, of course: increase the presence (in this here-and-now), facilitate change (from an old pattern to a new pattern). Simple enough, heh? The challenge, however, is to go from knowing to doing. Altman's solution is to turn each meal into a meditative practice of mindfulness. To take it one meal at a time.

Altman has done the homework and come up with a year (!) worth of original meal-by-meal meditational recipes - each consisting of a quotation, a brief mindfulness-provoking vignette, and a "bullet point" to sum things up and to chew on.

A major strength of this "meditational guidance" is a uniquely soothing rhythm of Entry>Choice>Preparation>Ritual>Eating>Community>Departure. Altman himself, in the preface, refers to these as "themes." In particular, he explains: "Meal by Meal uses daily themes that target your real world experience with food. With a theme for each day of the week <...> you are guided gently and surely onto the path of mindfulness" (p. 3). The apparent effect of these rolling phases is a kind of conditioned internalization to treat each meal as a series of mindfulness crossroads: you enter into hunger, you make a conscious choice as to how to satisfy it, you mindfully prepare the food, with ritualistic mindfulness of the process you consume it, while appreciating social company or merely communing with the world at large by meditating on how this act of eating connects and unites you with the rest, and eventually exiting the moment of eating with mindful grace, without the baggage of disordered eating - a meal after meal after meal.

What Altman succeeds in doing with this book is somewhat paradoxical: he is helping you turn mindfulness into a habit. Why is this paradoxical? Habits - to be habits - have to be mindless stimulus-response associations. But here it's a different story. By reading a page from Altman's "meal by meal" once a day, you are gradually instituting a habit of remembering to wake up, to go off your autopilot whenever you sit down to eat - and the behavior of eating mindfully, with time, becomes second nature, an altogether different kind of auto-pilot, a kind of auto-pilot that reminds the pilot to get back in the driver's seat, and that, in turn, un-yokes the mindless eater from the shackles of mindless eating.

Altman's writings on mindful eating, in my opinion, are a staple for a weight management self-help library. Altman's "Meal by Meal" isn't a cookbook but it is a recipe book for mindful eating.

I was familiar with the work of Donald Altman from his earlier 'Art of the Inner Meal' and was impressed how his writing has found a fresh and densely pragmatic new form. 'Meal by Meal' is a fluid read of inspiring quotes coupled with practical insights by the author. This book is extremely handsome, a beautifully laid out composition making this both useful and pleasurable to read. If you have the discipline to read a page at a time, you will find this helpful day by day. I personally had trouble putting it down and would read a month at a time... but the suggestions are valid and useful on a second slower read. Worthwhile investment for someone wishing to calm their compulsive behavior for a more reflective perspective.

I might not call this book meal by meal but I would call it day by day. I've been using it for about a month now as a guide for mindful eating. Some of the ideas are things I do, some of them are easy for me to implement, and some of them are a challenge. I like the idea of focusing on eating rather than dieting and it appears to be helping me make more concious choices about how I approach food.

This book is easy to read and understand even if you have very little knowledge of mental illness. Armed with the information I studied here I have started my son on a regime of fatty acids, minerals and vitamins. It's too soon to say what will happen but in just a few weeks his eye contact, memory and social skills have begun to improve. I believe every sufferer of schizophrenia should be taking nutritional supplements. Unfortunately, in the UK the protocol is to get them on drugs in order to make them well enough to be safe and that's it. I wonder what my son's life would have been like if I'd had this information seventeen years ago. If you have a mental illness or you care about someone who has this condition then find out everything you can about nutrition for the brain.

I spent the last twenty years trying to sort out my emotional roller coaster of a life and trying to figure out why I have extreme levels of many heavy metals. This book led me -- finally! -- to the answer. Seems I have a genetic zinc deficiency that causes me to retain heavy metals in my body, and a histamine disorder. And thankfully, there is a simple (not easy, simple) nutritional cure for it all. BUT PLEASE NOTE: The book did not diagnose me but led me to the Pfeiffer Clinic in Illinois. THEY diagnosed me and I am now on their program and heading toward the light at the end of a very long tunnel. If you have or know of anyone with bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, this is a must have book. The wealth of information is unsurpassed. I would know -- my bookshelves and computer are FILLED with other books who give this piece or that piece of the puzzle. This book puts all the possible scenarios in one place AND gives information I'd not seen in other sources on these topics. Nicely organized, well written. I can only thank the author from the bottom of my heart.

An encyclopedia of nutritional answers to mental health

This book is very in depth, but if (like me) you are a lay-person looking for a cure, I would first recommend reading "Nutrition and Mental Health" by Carl C. Pfieffer. I found this was the key to finding out I was "histadelic". This book by Eva Eldman is like an encyclopedia of nutritional information for mental illness (don't be put off by the term "schizophrenia", this book is for people with mild depression, bipolar etc.). The only real thing I picked up from this book that I didn't get from Pfieffer's was that Vitamin B5 exacerbates histadelia. I'm curious why that is. The problem with this book for a person starting out on the natural healing pathway is there is way too much information in this book and it is possible you could miss your answer by going off on a tangent. It took me two years to finally stick to the simple regieme of calcium, methionine, B6 and zinc that is the key to beating histadelia. It was a catch 22 for me because I had to cure myself far enouth to be stable enough to stick to the answer I found in the beginning and stop obsessively latching on to everything else that possibly could have been the answer. I find the whole low-protein diet hard though.
Don't give up hope if you can't find a doctor! I thought there weren't any doctors in New Zealand that believe in this stuff but I was wrong! There are a few medical GP's that are pfieffer trained even down here in the remotest parts of the earth, so there's gotta be someone where you are (maybe 2-3 hours drive away) that can help!

Solved the problem!

This is an incredibly dense book. [...]. But I can not see how it could be written any more clearly. It is well written with good topical divisions and many side bars and jammed packed with information. I think of it as a "Bible" or encyclopedia on natural treatment of schizophrenia and similar disorders. I found it particularly helpful to understand the history of schizophrenia, seeing the illness as a disruption of cognitive and perceptual/sense functions. It does a great job of discussing the nutritional, toxic, and allergic/gut fungal overgrowth issues and bringing up some of the rarer issues. The knowlege I found here has already helped several people.

This book has saved me hundreds of dollars, since I always cross-check claims by commercial companies that sell complementary products--and who usually provide artfully deceptive ways to make it appear as though vitamins, herbs, and other supplements are the "answer" to everything from arthritis to herpes zoster. Clearly presented with an impartial and reasoned conclusion regarding the efficacy of a vast number of natural healing consumables. It provides recommended doses when a product is given the thumbs up, and warns against common assumptions many of take for granted owing to media overexposure. When research is presented that purports to support the medicinal qualities of a product, the authors provide a careful analysis of the strength of the reserach, whether its been replicated, and whether other research has been done that has had less stellar findings. A brief history of natural products is provided whether its an herb used for thousands of years or a current fad that is prevalant in other health care systems, particularly in Europe. I do have ONE MAJOR disappointment, however. Where is the UPDATED edition? This book is now six years old; much has happened in the world of conventional and natural medicine in that time, and without such a reference guide it would require endless searching to learn of newer findings.

Truly an indispensable reference!

I feel it is very important that I have a good source of information aside from that which is available from the company for which I sell natural supplements. I'm often frustrated by the limited acceptance of herbal supplements and remedies in the U.S., especially those which are widely used in Europe, China, and other parts of the world. This book states "principal proposed treatments" (those which have been tested successfully in the U.S.) and "other proposed treatments" (those not tested in the U.S., but are often used in other countries). It gives details about recommended dosages, safety issues, medical interactions, etc. So far, it has provided me with information about almost every ingredient I've searched for, and has made me feel much more confident about recommending the products I sell! There is a section regarding health problems and the recommended products for treating them, then another section of herbal substances and their recommended uses. The information is alphabetized, with shaded tabs on the edges of the pages for quick look-ups. It is so organized and easy to use, it's not only the first book I reach for when I need information, often it is the ONLY book I need!

Well, I love the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul books, which are coathured by Kimberly Kirberger, and so when I saw this book I lept at the chance to buy it. But I felt a bit let down; I think the Chicken Soup books were MUCH better. This book is filled with input and advice from Kirberger that at times seem too fake to actually appreciate. Yes, some advice is actually helpful, but I found myself gritting my teeth at the near cheesiness of Kirberger's words... I want to read OTHER people's stories, not Kirberger's souped up advice that isn't very original in the first place--most stuff I've heard time and time again.
AND... This book is pretty narrow-minded. Basically all of it is about weight problems. Either, the person was insecure because they couldn't stop eating, or they were fat and stopped eating all together. I can't really relate, because I'm UNDERweight and always hoping and wishing that I will gain some pounds. All these girls are blah blah crying about how fat they are... but not everyone is fat, what about them? They still have insecurities that need looking at.
Some of the stories were interesting, all by someone other than Kirberger. This book focuses on too much of the same thing though and I skipped a lot of Kirberger's blah pages. If you're an OVERweight teen and need comforting, go ahead and read this. If not, skip this book and try a chicken soup one.

I will admit; I have been struggling with body image and "looks" for about as long as I can remember. This book by Kimberly Kirberger helps me to realize that no body is perfect, and that you need to embrace what you look like and have. If you can totally accept yourself the way you are, then you are on your way to success.

After reading this book, I came to realize, and "saw the light" so to speak, about body image, self acceptance, and the search for my identity. I definently think that this book was very helpful in helping me to overcome the "stereotype" that you have to be 105 pounds to be considered beautiful. Now I know that I am perfect in every aspect of my life, and I now love and accept who I am inside...and who I am inside is all that really matters.

I definently strongly encourage those girls who are currently struggling with self acceptance, body image, and the search of who they are, to read this book, and also fill out the Nobody's Perfect Journal as well. This book is very helpful, and insightful, and it will get you back on the right track in life, and make you realize that life isn't all about looks and popularity...rather, it is a journey to love and acccept yourself for who you are!

I read the book No Body's Perfect. It was written by Kimberly Kirberger. It's written about teens and struggles with their everyday life, including eating disorders, boys, and learning who to hang-out with and who not to hang-out with.
This book gets points across to you, for example, "Accepting yourself just the way you are may seem like a pretty big challenge. It may even seem impossible. But it's not." This is one of the great quotes in this book.
This book would be very helpful and influential to teenagers struggling with these problems. I recommend this book to 12- 18 year- old girls. You will love this book!

This book is my bible! i love it to death. It shows you simple things you forget back into the light and can truly change the way you think about yourself. It makes you realise that you're not alone out there with either eating disorders, abusive relationships, heart aches, suicides, or any situations that are hard to held with emotionally and physically. I've never really got into the chicken books myself, but this book took only a second to love it! i recommand this book to everyone!

Florence Nightingale greatly influenced modern nursing, to focus on the needs of the patient and establish nursing as a profession requiring assessment skills as well as caring presence. This brief, well-written & clearly understandable book is a must for the personal library of any nurse or nursing student. It is amazing to realize how advanced Nightingale's thinking was in her era; her lessons remain essential today and provide a basis for understanding why we do the things we do. A great read for anyone interested in nursing!

What a delicious selection of quotes about fashion! This book would really help me explain to people why I am obsessed with getting all dressed up in costumes, outfits and accessories. The gorgeous illustrations add to the charming cuteness of the book. These quotes show that there is real meaning and philosophy behind fashion and it's form of self-expression. Clothes and appearance really do make a difference!
An essential book for fashionistas. I shall cherish this book forever!

Toby Tobias' adorable book takes the questioning element out of my daily clothing puzzle. This morning, Edith Sitwell told me to 'be myself'! The in-put from great minds of the past is a radiant rainbow of fun, humor, delight and wit. Ballerina@Large.Dash-Dot

Tobi Tobias' new book, Obsessed by Dress, brings delight far beyond the sensual pleasure of holding a book that is exactly the right hand heft for the object itself. It corroborates ones joy of personal adornment through quotes from those who have the wit and style through the ages to say what you have been thinking and feeling all along about why have arrived a this particular persona. You become marvelous in your own eyes.

One doesn't have to be a clothing aficionado to have a rewarding time with Tobi Tobias's "Obsessed By Dress." A small-size book with a biggness of content, "Obsessed" is alive with famous-person clothing quotes, meticulously researched by Tobias, reflecting her passion for Dress and great writing. Dickens, Proust, Virgil, Keats, Dior, Dorothy Parker, and RuPaul are among those quoted.

For the well-dressed mind

This is a lovely book, full of wit and surprises. It's obvious that Tobias has chosen quotes from books with which she is familiar, rather than compiling a hodgepodge of witty bon mots, selected at random. The bonus, in addition to making one think about fashion and its place in civilization, is reminders of books one has read, or wants to read, or should.

Armed with a few quotes from this book and a little black dress, one could conquer any cocktail party in fine style!

How 'big pharma' has become IMMORAL and UNETHICAL... a 'MUST READ'!

'Over Dose' is quite simply a 'MUST READ'. Dr. Jay Cohen goes into detail how and why so many drugs are harmful and/or overdosed to patients more than ever before. In short, he discusses the moral and societal failings of 'big pharma', the FDA, 'bought and sold' politicians, falsified drug safety trials, and misled Doctors who unknowingly prescribe much higher doses than necessary, often harming or killing unsuspecting patients! The huge power and influence these multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical companies wield is getting worse and worse, and the major 'conflict of interest' that exists in the FDA is unethical, immoral, and dangerous. Folks, this is criminality at it's highest levels, protected by big corporate power and profit interests. This book is, without a doubt, a milestone necessary read for every American!

Everyone should read this book!

Finally, someone has put into print an accurate and factual picture of what the drug manufacturing industry does to place profits way ahead of patient benefit and safety. Anyone who takes prescription medications should read this book. Maybe it gets a little too technical in spots for people not in the health professions, but there is plenty of excellent information and suggestions to make this a very valuable reference for consumer-oriented patients.
I am a doctoral-level clinical pharmacist, and I found myself in agreement with most all of what Dr. Cohen has written and recommended in this book. This should be required reading for every practicing physician, medical student, pharmacist, and nurse in the country. Medical schools should add this to their curriculum for all of our doctors-to-be to read before they take their pharmacology course and start their clinical training.

I began working in pharmacy in the late 1960's. I helped dispense drugs at a retail drugstore in my home town and I did the same in the largest hospital in Chicago. I kept it up at another hospital and then started "doing" it on my own when I opened my retail store in 1983. I read the manufacturers' package inserts and I followed the prescriptions as they were ordered - and I noticed that many people had problems with the "recommended" dose. Sometimes they got used to the dose and sometimes it had to be changed. In any event, the recommended dose was not always accurate accurate - it was often dangerously WRONG.

I don't know what I thought about all the problems with prescription drugs. I guess I just presumed the patients were overly sensitive, or just unlucky. I didn't often think too much about it - until I became aware of Dr. Jay Cohen and his "Case Against the Drug Companies." His shocking book is called "OVER DOSE" and it describes in good detail the dangers of relying on the manufacturers' package inserts to prescribe drugs.

This is an "eye opener" book and it angers me. How is it that we have this overriding desire to place the bottom line above decent care for health? There are some great things happening in medicine - all around the world. But I think that all the good can be quickly undone by hanging on to a misguided philosophy that insists that profits trump everything else. Its time for a change and Dr. Cohen is part of the changing process. I promise to do my part for change. One thing is to expose potential problems (like Dr. Cohen has done) and another is to encourage people to think about the issues (that's my goal). Please get a copy of this book. Read it and then think about what it really means. When we reach a critical mass changes will happen. You can bank on it! (pun intended)

Overdose will Wake You Up to the Truth about MEDS!

The aphorism, the cure is worse than the disease, is an apropos motto for "Over Dose." Drug company policies rake in billions while harming the very patients they are meant to help. Dr. Jay S. Cohen opens more cans of worms than a fisherman could hook in his lifetime. The evidence is horrifically overwhelming - America is being overmedicated.

Dr. Cohen is not anti-medication; he advocates the reasonable usage of these powerful meds. His mantra is "start low, go slow." The well researched (53 pages of references) is adept at uncovering the shortcomings of the pharmaceutical companies and their adverse effects on the public - 46% of Americans take at least one prescription daily. Cohen shows how the drug companies' one-size-fits-all dosage is literally killing people. Nearly 300 people die daily due to a medication reaction. The dire facts keep on coming. The author's case against the drug companies is convincing.

Dr. Cohen's precise writing is somber. But the real sad part of this tragedy is how avoidable it can be. Dr. Cohen is equally effective in offering realistic solutions. He clearly states, "My goal in writing `Over Dose' is to provide you with informed consent about the unacceptable state of medication treatment today...to reduce your risks-and to begin to end the side-effect epidemic." "Over Dose" is a must have; the expose may alter you life for the better and perhaps even save it.

A valuable theme disclosing inadequate testing by the drug companies and woeful evaluations by the FDA of prescription drugs. The main thesis is well-taken: lower doses of many drugs could minimize side-effects, including death. Actually does not go far enough in exposing all the major drug classes that do not increase lifespan at all!
