I've been using this program periodically over 22 years and wouldn't consider any other.
It's efficacious, low impact, and all natural. Results are evident after the first week, and lead to a consciously positive health benefit over the period of each use.
I given this book away to many people.

A must for anybody that eats...

This book is inexpensive and short. It can be read in one sitting. It gives all the details and explains very well how to cleanse your colon WITHOUT enemas or fasting. The products he recommends can be easily found over the internet by doing a search "Robert Gray Colon." This is by far the best information I have found and the easiest program to follow. Robert Gray really knows what he is talking about.

This 77pg. booklet has some good info. but you can find similar info. in other quality colon books. I don't understand after all these revisions that there are still some errors. For example, the author explains how to make a rejuvalac with cabbage and then at the end of the explanation it makes reference to wheat berries but no explanation on how to make it with that. The climax of the book and the one that tops it all is the author explains which herbs that will help clean the colon but doesn't say how many milligrams needed per each herb or where you may find the source of this herb combination (if it's out there). Basically the book directs you to a dead end. Buy at your own risk! If the author can make these necessary corrections then I'll give a 5-star ...

It worked for me

I read this book with interest some 4 years ago now.
Back then I was suffering with cronic pain in the bowel, had numerous test at doctors and hospital, all with no diagnosis.
This book made me realise what we do to our bodies with diary products and I gave up this food group immediately, and went on the cleansing program for 4 to 5 months.
Within 3 months the pain had gone, and to this day has never returned !

This book is so simple to read and once you start you don't want to put it down. The first few pages make you want to run out to the grocery store and hit the produce isle. It honestly makes you change your entire way of thinking when it comes to eating. You'll want that fruit salad rather than the candy bar. It's just such' a GREAT and easy to read and so easy to absorb book! Everyone is getting one for christmas!

A friend told me about this book and how much the concepts when applied, had helped her feel so much better - and healthier! I have been following the ideas for around 4 weeks now and couldn't agree more. Even though my goal was not to lose weight, I've lost 10 pounds just by eating better - according to color! And believe it or not, I feel better as well. Buy this book and a bright highlighter. You'll soon be marking your favorite brightly colored foods - and then filling your grocery cart with them. Well written, easy to understand and chock full of references - it simply makes sense.

It is now 5 months later since I first reviewed this book and I've loaned out my copy to several people - all are experiencing similar results as I have. I continue to eat "by color", my weight has stayed off, I can't remember when I was last sick and what was merely a good book has become a terrific reference book. If you forget what particular benefits a certain color food has - simply look it up - layed out clearly in the book - by color of course!

NOTE: It is now January 2007 and I continue to eat according to "colors". My weight has stayed off, I was not sick even one day in 2006 and every week I fill up a plastic container (for work snacks) filled with vegetable color!

I happened across this book in a bookstore and bought it on a whim. I was not before interested in Taoism, but fairly open minded. THIS IS THE BEST, MOST INSPIRATIONAL BOOK I HAVE READ IN YEARS. I don't want to go too over the top or I'll lose my credibility, but this book quite simply has changed my life (ok, that's over the top). If you enjoy cooking with fresh ingredients, the book gives great advice about food combining and which ingredients are most healthful. Reid also gives a few recipes at the back of the book that he considers "healing" recipes. The recipe for Hunan chicken was worth the cost of the book. I have been cooking for a decade and that recipe is the most delicious dish I've ever made. I really can't say enough. I am less interested in the sections on Chee-gung, but they are still useful as a way of understanding the importance of quieter, less strenuous stretching/activity. I bought this book 6 months ago, but I would say that I pick it up to read sections at least once a week. I have lost 15 pounds, am full of energy and feel more positive and refreshed than I have since I was 21.

An eye opener to the Way through Taoist methods

This book is nothing short of spectacular, and this is because it motivates to start doing some of what Daniel Reid. explains. Reid, a Westerner living in Asia since the 70's, comes with Western scientific explanations (where possible; modern science isn't yet developed enough to understand and acknowledge nature of some things) of why Taoists do things the way they do.
Books subtitle is "Guarding the three treasure" - and by that he means the body, energy and spirit, he touches all of them. After reading it I understand a lot more things about the world in general. A lot more...
I first started reading his other book - "The Tao of Health, Sex and Longevity", and I would recommend starting with that one, because it is more basic and easier to chew by the Western mind. This books is also very clear, and you don't need other explanations, but reading the other one first would make some things easier. Personally, after I finished this one book, I understood some of his teachings in "The Tao..." that I had skipped at that point and started doing them now. One good example of this is to do skin brushing every day. Why? Stimulate lymph movement, especially helpful for people living sedentary lives every day. I intend to reread both of them many times, and hopefully pick new good habits with each pass. I'll probably look into his other works.
So, what's in the book?
It starts with explaining the Taoist cosmogony, starting with the One source, Tao. You probably already know its mark, it' that circle with black and white "tears", each having a small spot of the other inside it.
They are the two poles, Yang (male/active/warming/ascending, white with with black spot) and Yin (female/passive/cooling/descending).
There are three powers - heaven, earth and humans, the latter mixing the treasure of spirit and awareness from the heaven (whose laws are named "destiny") with the nourishment and essential building blocks of the body.
There are four foundations -blood, energy, nourishment, and resistance (e.g. immunity), and you need to develop all of them. They depend on each in many ways, and each could be overactive or underactive. They should be balanced for a vibrant health. There are remedies for all of them. While everyone is more likely to know that that chlorophyl is good for blood, did you know there are energy supplements? Yes, such as air ionizers, and, suprise, crystals (wear one around your neck), plus modern stuff (pulsed field generators, cranio electro stimulation and others).
There are five energies (water, wood, fire, earth, metal), and each is associated with some colour, foods, vibration, season, bodily organs, taste, time of day, feeling, and more. For example, this fits with the Western knowledge that each organ is most active at a specific time of the day. BTW, looking at some list of symptoms, I figured that I have underactive kidneys, and inspired by this I went to an acupuncturist/chinese doctor and he confirmed it. Now that the problem is confirmed, I know what foods to emphasize, what breathing exercises to do, etc.
There are six evils (of environmental energies) - wind, heat, dampness, dryness, cold and fire, each more prevalent in a specific time of a year, and could combine (e.g. cold dryness). BTW, I should tell that in Chinese medicine body is treat as a whole, except for injuries, it's your lifestyle that's the problem, and several symptoms that seem totally unrelated point to the same thing. Alcoholism creates 'stomach fire' and 'liver fire', heavy smoking, sugar creates 'internal dampness', exposure to electromagnetic pollution creates 'internal wind'. Everything fits together, with easy to understand words, yet all having Western scientific equivalents, albeit way harder to follow.
Seven emotions (Joy, Anger, etc.) - for Chinese healthy and non-excessive thoughts lead to physical health. This is harder to understand - in the West people are referred to psychiatrist for mental issues, yet there are many cases of curing psychological problems by diet, and, reversely, get sick by thinking negatively. I would suggest Deepak Chopra's books (e.g. Quantum leap healing) for an scientific explanation of how this works. Basically it's a positive (as in self-enforcing) feedback between nervous and endocrine systems.
Eight indicators: Chinese doctors follow a four stage process: interviewing (remember, everything matters: chills/fever, stool/urine, diet/sleep/sex), observing (way of moving, talking, breathing, skin color; tongue and face analysis are true arts, both having parts corresponding to internal organs), and ends with touching (flesh, internal organs, accupresure on vital points which become tender in sick people, and taking pulse, which is again an art). After the initial state is evaluated, different remedies might be prescribed (massage, accupuncture, diet, breathing), looking for the eight indicators (yin/yang, internal/external, cold/hot, empty/full). Symptoms come and go during treatment, change one into each other, and so do the remedy but at the end the body and internal organs are balanced, the evil energies are removed. It's very hard to be a good Chinese doctor, you need to learn a lot, because everything relates, from anatomy to nutrition to breathing to environmental exposure to lifestyle.
This was the first part of the book, and there were three of them.
It then talks about diet and nutrition, what foods go with with elemental energy (and thus with what organ), talks about food profiles and effect on the body (sugar, meat, fats, etc.), about gradually improving the diet and how to watch for detox signs. Avoid unhealthy fats (such as (partially) hydrogenated vegetable oil), pasteurized milk (not even calves can live on it), eat lots of fermented foods, drink pure water, and other sound advices on food combining (don't eat meat with potatoes or bread, for example). He talks about enzymes - spark of life - and how overcooking destroys them.
Regarding the energy "treasure", he explains about the bioenergy and the bioenergetic model of human body as determined by ancient acupuncture practitioners, how Western researchers have confirmed and validated them (look for Robert Becker - he rediscovered acupuncture points and proved that we are influenced by planets through the endocrine system) and then talks about electromagnetic pollution. He emphasizes chee-gung (chi-kung/qi-gong) - "energy work", slow movements synchronized with breathing to balance endocrine and nervous system, improve the energy stored in the body and thus build immunity etc. There are even specific chi-gung exercises for each elemental energy imbalance (read: affected organ). There are special sexual yoga solo exercises.
Finally... meditation. All the above can help with meditation. He explains why one should meditate, and from this chapter I understood what hermites in caves, enlightened monks, yoga gurus, taoist masters, martial arts experts all have in common. It is hard to explain, and reading the book might not be enough. In short, you might not be prepared to accept it. This is it... it's like religion. Suffice to say that the meditation chapter changed my life. I hope it will change yours. I actually preffered to write only about the meditation chapter in this review.

The books also has food recipes (balanced according to the teachings), herbs and some herbal recipes, plus lists of suppliers to get products from.

Dan Reid has an approach so that both Eastern and Western knowledge should be used and combine to create a better life for all of us. He certainly does combine them - Eastern trued and tried practices with Western technology (e.g. herbal remedies with vitamins, enzymes, cofactors and nootropic; modern energy supplements.

This is just a one page review. Of course the book is much more thorough. Just go get it, study it and practice from it even as you are still reading it for the first time. You'll never regret it. Mark my words.

Whether curious or serious about Taoism, buy this book!

I do not know who to thank for curing me of a chronic digestive disorder whose underlying cause had eluded allopathic physicians and Western nutritionists for the past 30 years: Daniel P. Reid or the ancient Taoist masters?

Mr. Reid's books are truly gifts to the modern Western world and to those who sense that there is something more to life than a mass-produced culture and lifestyle. Ancient wisdom does have a wealth of knowledge to impart today in order to live a better tomorrow. If you are a newcomer to Taoism, spirituality, and traditional health practices, this is an ideal book to help you begin your journey towards enlightment. Those with a little more experience will also benefit from reading this book and adding its little gems of wisdom to their library of ever-expanding Taoist knowledge. Somehow, years of higher education and exponetially expanding university tuition never taught me the beautiful, life-affirming, and liberating simplicities expounded by Taoism. Begin your journey with these books.

I also highly recommend Mr. Reid's "The Tao of Health, Sex and Longevity" as an excellent companion to "The Complete Book..." However, I caution you to exercise maturity, responsibility and personal accountability as you read and practice the ancient Taoist arts. You should be fully aware that there is no way for the author to be familiar with your particular ailments or life-situation. In this regard, I recommend that you pursue your studies under the guidance of a qualified instructor and to seek health advice from a Traditional Chinese Medical practitioner. If you heed the caution and advice you will gain tremendously. There is genuine gold in this ancient wisdom. You will find yourself asking the question: "Why doesn't the rest of the Western world know about this?"

Good luck to all of you as you travel the Tao of life-enrichment through ancient wisdom. I encourage you to pursue this seemingly miraculous path towards a better life. Learn from it and spread the word. You, and others, will never regret it.

There are thousands of books published about Chinese Medicine, but none come close to this one for readability, enjoyment, clarity, and detail. While I don't agree with every single interpretation that Reid makes, I find that I am constantly referring my patients and students to this book.

It is a great place to begin your exploration of Chinese Medicine in its broadest scope. Reid writes intelligently, and yet simply, about the full range of Chinese Medical practices and the foundations of Energetic Medicine too.

His format takes the reader, step-by-step, along the path of understanding this rich tradition of self-care, personal evolution, and natural healing. You will find plenty of personal stories in this book and a fair share of scientific findings which support the understanding presented.

Perhaps most importantly, you will be able to apply the basic principles, as described so clearly here, in your daily life. This is truly a book that can help you get started on the path of natural healing in your own life.

If you are in the healing profession, you will discover a world of refreshing insights, challenging questions, and beneficial protocols to explore.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is sincerely interested in Chinese Medicine or Qigong.

Among the great scriptures of Indian spiritual thought, Yoga Vasistha is the the most beloved of mine. It is not a dry, wise and scholarly representation of Upanishadic thinking. It is a witty, surrealistic, out-of-mind story-telling to break the grip of one's logic-dominated mind. How to grasp with human mind what essentially is beyond it? Read it and either you will jump with joy or you will not understand anything beyond the stories. Are you ready? Or are you asleep with your eyes wide open?

The Vedic texts are so full of wisdom and profundity that they take a real time commitment to appreciate them. The full text of the Yoga Vasista is no different. That is why I appreciate this condensed version so much. The meaning and nuances are all there, yet it is written in an accessible style. Make no mistake, this condensed form will take time to read also (perhaps one verse per night before sleep), but it is so sublime and so easy to use.

I absolutely love this book. The recipes are easy to follow and actually taste good...(unlike some other more well known GF cookbooks). I made chocolate chip cookies today and I could not believe how wonderful they tasted...even better than wheat based cookies (seriously). I have also made several of the dinners and my husband who is not GF enjoys them greatly. As with any GF cookbook you will need to stock your pantry with a good variety of GF flours and staple products...but with the growing awareness of celiac disease many mainstream food markets are carrying these special products. This book is a must have. Enjoy.

Finally a GF cookbook that is simple and well designed

I just got this book for Christmas yesterday, and only last night sat down and actually flipped through it. I meant to only glance through and note what was there for future reference. Needless to say, I spent over two hours just "glancing."

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!! I cannot say that enough. I LOVE THIS BOOK.

Steele truly captures The Corset. She has an eloquent style of writing that totally captures you. I normally *hate* non-fiction, despite my love affair with historic fashion. She drew in even me, in a clear and concise language that was far from dry.
Not only is Steele interesting, but she's very in-depth. Her book is 208 pages, and she makes use of every inch of them. She gets into the details, without droning on and on. Her use of references is astounding, and she's very good at working them in as she goes.
And the pictures!! Gorgeous. There's so many of them; most I had never seen. Let me tell you, that's hard. Admittedly, the historic section of the book is sparse at first, due to age, but she totally makes up for it later.
Steele's approach to corseting is truly unbiased, too. She tackles the history of tightlacing with grace and fairness, and fetishism without judgment.

Like I said-- I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!

Steele's books all feature informative text and beautiful pictures. In "The Corset", she discusses this mysterious undergarment and dispels myths, explains sociological and feminist aspects of it, and looks at controversies surrounding it throughout time.

Steele discusses fashion from so many perspectives: class, gender, art, sexuality, medical, historical, and anthropological, and she does so with insight and clarity. Tracing its antecedents and moving to contemporary times, Steele outlines its influences on fashion and society.

For anyone interested in deeply understanding this beautiful and controversial garment, Steele is the author to read. She merges the world of fashion with academia. This book is fascinating and insightful!

This well-thought out book shows so many pictures of kids of all ethnic backgrounds having fun doing yoga that any mom would be enthralled. The pictures are fluid; the children are happy; the poses look natural. It makes you want to get on the floor and try a pose, too.

Most of the yogis who attend our yoga studio have children and are always looking for ways to interest their children in yoga. While we offer Family Yoga and Kids Yoga, the demand for "more for the children"
continues. This book offers parents and yoga teachers a way to easily introduce yoga into the lives of our children, and it does so in a presentation that is at once simple, fun, and delightful! I am confident this book will be on my shelves at the studio, so that when parents clamor for more kids yoga, I can recommend this book!

Create a Yoga Practice for Kids
By Yael Calhoun and Matthew Calhoun
Illustrations by Carol Anne Coogan

Best children's yoga book on the market today. Excellent descriptions, delightful illustrations. The big secret is, it has not only made Hatha Yoga fun, joyful, interesting for children, it is an excellent resource book for parents and yoga teachers. I used some partner yoga ideas immediately in my adult classes, touching the ageless child within us all. Great job Matthew and Yael. BRAVO!

If you are trying to avoid dairy products in your diet, you may have found the excellent Web site: [...]. The site is constantly updated with product reviews, articles, announcements, discounts, etc. To make the information even more accessible, the sites founder, Alisa marie Fleming has put together a book entitled "Dairy Free Made Easy: Thousands of Foods, Hundreds of Tips, and Dozens of Recipes for Non-Dairy Living."

This well-researched book gives detailed information about dairy products - what they are, how they are processed, what is so special about dairy milk anyway, and answers questions about organic vs. conventional dairy products.

For those avoiding dairy products for health reasons, there is extensive information about allergies, lactose intolerance, whether dairy can help you to lose weight or to gain it, whether there is a link between consuming dairy products and certain cancers, acne, migraines, and other ailments. There is also great information about infant milk allergies and steps to prevent food allergies in babies. Fleming includes information about why breastfeeding is so important but she gives a comprehensive breakdown of infant formulas on the market with the pros and cons of the various choices.

Probably the most common concern of those giving up dairy products is where will they get their calcium. Fleming does an excellent job of dispelling the myth that dairy products are the best source of calcium (they're NOT!) and gives excellent advise for getting calcium from food and choosing a supplement if you feel you need one.

Fleming goes on to list non-dairy alternatives for milk, cream, cheese, etc., recommending products you can buy but also including easy ways to make the substitutions yourself. There is a small section of recipes with some yummy sounding dishes like "Easy Dairy-free Lasagna, Cream of Mushroom Soup (I can't wait to make that one!), 5-Star Ranch Dressing, Chocolate Tofu Ice Cream and Dairy-free Cheesecake.

Another really excellently done section is the chapter on dining out. Fleming goes through the various kinds of restaurants and lists dairy-free options for each, for example, she says that most dishes at Asian restaurants (Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Vietnamese) are dairy-free though they may contain eggs. At Mexican restaurants, she suggests tacos, fahitas, tamales, and burritos - but tell them to hold the cheese and sour cream. More importantly (I think), she clues you into dishes that you might think are dairy-free but aren't, e.g. she tells you to "Skip the Tandoor and kabob entrees. Though they may appear dairy free, these specialities are typically meats and/or vegetables marinated in yogurt." For curries, Fleming recommends going to a Thai restaurant as Indian curries are usually made with cream.

Other helpful sections in the book tell how to decode food lables, lists of ingredients that really mean dairy (e.g. lactose, caseinate, whey), and foods that may contain dairy - some that even surprised me like tuna fish, chewing gum, chicken broth, and breath mints!

A large portion of the book is dedicated to profiling non-dairy products (over 2,000). A nice feature is that the products are ALL free of hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup. (YAY!) The foods are listed in a chart format that lets you know if the product is in stores on can be purchased online, if it's gluten-free, soy-free, vegan, processed on dairy-free equipment, and is kosher certified.

The book also lists resources for finding dairy-free products and cookbooks. Although this book is not vegan, it is an excellent resource for vegans and anyone avoiding dairy. If you suffer from severe dairy allergies, I would say this is a definite must-have.

Fantastic Resource--A must have for a dairy-free lifestyle!

This is an exceptionally detailed, organized, and informative book. The author writes in a very intelligent and easy to understand manner. The topics of each chapter are well-defined and information can be found very quickly. I was especially pleased with all of the additional resources made available at the end of the book.

Besides all of the information on food allergies and dairy-free concerns, the book also addresses the many challenges we face when dining out, preparing our own meals, and how to shop for ingredients. Preparing non-dairy meals and shopping can be time-consuming and challenging. Sometimes, those labels you find on food products are very confusing. Alisa's grocery shopping lists provided a way for me to quickly scan the categories I was most interested in and find those types of foods with little trouble at my local or specialty health food stores. The chapters on dairy-free alternatives and cooking without dairy illustrated that we can still make many of the meals we love without worrying about sacrificing taste. Restaurant tips include fast food, ethnic choices, and general ways on how to be more aware of what you are eating when information about ingredients are not readily stated on the menu.

All in all, this book is a tremendous reference for anyone who is interested in a dairy-free lifestyle. Although I personally do not have dairy allergies, following her advice worked well for me because I can still enjoy eating the foods I love but in a more healthy and balanced way.

Dairy Free Made Easy? Definitely!

This is a great resource that certainly lives up to its title.
You can literally pick this book up and "run with it" to the grocery store or the restaurant (or your own kitchen).
It is also a great reference book - it contains the latest research information regarding dairy and dairy alternatives.

I am currently using this book to "wean" our family off of our dairy addiction!
I am confident that, by using the recipes and the extensive list of additional resources, the transition should be a smooth one.
Well, except for that "addiction" part, but that is our job and it is a big one.

Thanks for writing a book that actually inspires you to make the change.

"Page Turner" is not usually a term you'd use to describe a cookbook or lifestyle guide, but that's exactly what "Dairy Free Made Easy" is. Like a good mystery, this comprehensive guide to diary free living was filled with one "ah ha!" moment after another. Alisa Marie Fleming brings you the insider scoop on dairy, and all the havoc it can reap. From the revelatory chapter on "The Many Faces of Non-dairy Dieters" (thanks for the info on "acne and dairy!), to the excellent "Dining Out With Diary Free Style", to the encyclopedia-like "Grocery Shopping: Over 2000 Non-Dairy Products", this book continuously impressed me with its thoroughness, and helpful timely advice. Of particular note was the chapter on "Non-Dairy Milk Alternatives" which includes instructions on making your own rice milk, oat milk, soy milk, etc. -- a very helpful guide for those with growing concerns over cross-contamination.

As the mother of a dairy-allergic child, and an asthmatic toddler, and the wife of a lactose intolerant husband, "Dairy Free Made Easy" just made living dairy free a whole lot easier!

I agree with others this is certainly an excellent resource book, but want to point out that this book has a limited number of recipes. To the book's credit, these recipes include all the "standards" for dairy-free eating including Alfredo Sauce, Macaroni and Cheese, Tofu Sour Cream, Cream Cheese Alternative, etc. So, if you want information about Non-Dairy Living (i.e., its health benefits) and you don't mind that about half the book is a spreadsheet of store or internet products and their content (i.e., gluten-free, dairy-free, non-soy, vegan or Kosher), then this is the book for you.

Our North American culture is so deeply in need of this quality of information - and to have it combined with such spirit! I can hear Mariana's enthusiastic voice as I read her words and I-can-tations. Fantastic!

This book is very easy to read. It's also very easy to understand where the author is coming from regarding his strategies for healthcare.

This author does a great job of addressing many diseases that doctors today don't have the answer to. Modern medicine wants to keep you sick whereas this author writes to get you well. However, he still advocates you keep an MD. Then he tells you to take personal responsibility of your healthcare so you won't need your doctor.

The best thing this book has going for it is that it's real world and you can put the techniques in practice immediately. Also, the book is well researched and the studies mentioned are very thorough.

This should be on every person's bookshelf be you young or old.
