A must for allergic chefs or chefs who cook for allergic audiences, recommendedReview Date: 2008-12-08
Review by The Food Allergy AssistantReview Date: 2008-12-08
Here's a scrumptious sample of what we've been eating this week from "What Else is to Eat?":
Iced Honey Cookies (page 126)- we took these to a friend's house for dinner. They were a huge hit...easy to make and yummy to eat!
Spaghetti and Meatball Soup (page 26)- "This is really good, Mom!" was all I needed to hear.
Slow Cooker Beef With Rosemary and Potatoes (page 37)- Crockpots make life a bit easier, don't they? In just a few minutes I had everything in the slow cooker and voila', eight hours later, a delicious meal. Next time I'll chop the rosemary finely as my children picked off the "green pieces".
Linda's Signature Grilled Chicken (page 49)- Just four ingredients in a zip-top bag, with some chicken. I didn't grill, though, as our high temperature was 38 degrees that day, but it worked fine in the oven.
Disappearing Chocolate Oatmeal Delights (page 124)- these really did disappear in our house!
Coss's first recipe book ("What's to Eat?") is perfect for those who need basic food allergy recipes for items like pancakes, waffles, chocolate chip cookies and plain white cake. I find Linda's second book, "What Else is to Eat?", ideal for those of us who have the essentials, but are now hungry for the next level. Get them both and amaze your family and friends with delicious dishes.

More dairy-, egg-, and nut-free recipes for busy moms!Review Date: 2008-11-16
For my part, I tested and fell in love with the Pineapple Fried Rice (a brilliant blend of flavors), Kevin's Carrots (maple glazed, yum!), and the Dilled Pan-Roasted Carrots (can you tell I like carrots?). Time wise, I still haven't managed to make my way through the many recipes I want to make, such as the Wholesome Snack Muffins, Spaghetti and Meatball Soup, Hoisin Chicken, Everyday Barbecue Sauce, Molasses Chewies, and the Incredible Apricot Coffee Cake (with a name like that, how can I pass it up?). But, considering how easy her recipes are to throw together, I will likely find myself reaching for this cookbook to whip up one of the many dinner recipes when we are down to the basics in our cupboard and fridge.
Linda keeps it simple with recipes that use everyday pantry items and have relatively few ingredients. In fact, it is easy to picture her kitchen: your basic selection of easy to find dried herbs and spices; necessities such as white and wheat flour, brown and white sugars, cooking oil, dairy-free margarine, vinegar, rice, broth, canned fruits and vegetables, inexpensive dried fruits, and a small assortment of pasta shapes; and some "shortcut" condiments that you can find in nearly every grocery store, such as bottled garlic and ginger, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, chili sauce, Dijon mustard, and perhaps a jar of sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil. Add some fresh fruits and vegetables to your cart, along with some chicken and beef, and you can make most of the recipes in this book while keeping well within (even below) budget!
As for the vitals, the cookbook is a handy size (roughly 8.5" x 5.5"), contains 115 recipes, and covers the basic range of soups, salads, meals, vegetables, breakfast items, snacks, and desserts. Linda moves away from the norm, taking a practical approach to chapters. Rather than "entrees" the chapters are broken down to type, like Beef, Chicken, and Pasta, and rather than "desserts" you will find chapters for Cookies and Cakes. Those few that don't possess a sizable enough category, fit snuggly into the Miscellaneous chapter. The layout is extremely neat and tidy, with just one recipe per page (many with room for notes).
Highly Recommend!Review Date: 2008-10-19
Another Great Allergy CookbookReview Date: 2008-09-29
What I most loved about this book was how quick and simple the recipes are. I'm not a gourmet chef, and I really don't have the time or inclination to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I thought Ms. Coss' recipes were very do-able and healthy to boot! There were also quite a few slow-cooker recipes which work well with moms' and kids' busy schedules. I can definitely see myself trying out many of the main dish recipes in the next few weeks.

My Favorite Yoga for Back Pain BookReview Date: 2008-11-20
The book, Yoga Heals Your Back, can help you get started on the road to back pain relief. It's author, Rita Trieger, editor-in-chief of Fit and Fit Yoga, has been practicing yoga and meditation for more than 20 years. In addition to good introductory information regarding back pain and yoga, Yoga Heals Your Back includes several 10-minute routines designed to stretch and strengthen you back - simple daily programs that only take a few minutes.
The first routine is a morning stretch that can be done on your bed or on the floor. It's a great way to check in with your body and begin your day in a healthy way. The next routine is called, Align the Spine. It's a gentle yet invigorating series of eleven poses that will get your blood flowing while giving your spine and hips a good stretch. Other routines include:
Backbends - to correct your posture, tone your back muscles, and improve circulation.
More Backbends - deeper work for your back muscles.
Moving Forward - forward folds to soothe your nervous system and stretch your spine.
Unwind - six poses to relax your neck and shoulders.
Warm-up For More Vigorous Work - 6 poses to get your blood flowing and warm your muscles.
Strengthen the Lower Back, Hips, and Glutes - standing poses to build lower body strength.
Abdominal Strength - great moves to strengthen your core.
Modified Sun Series - A full body workout in 14 flowing movements.
Yoga Heals Your Back also has a chapter on using props (chair, blocks) to modify poses and concludes with an introduction to meditation.
I turned to this book for guidance recently when I overexerted myself jogging and ended up with an aching low back. The gentle poses helped me stretch and strengthen safely and I am happy to report that my back pain has resolved.
So, if you are ready to give your back some care and attention with yoga, Yoga Heals Your Back offers a great collection of 10-minute yoga routines to guide you.

Simple, Effective and Sensible Routines - Physiology Teaching Fellow ReviewReview Date: 2008-11-01
This book is attractively illustrated, concise and can be something you implement right away. While I would have liked to see more detail on the correct performance of some of the poses, there is certainly enough to get you started. The routines are also complementary even though they are listed by body area. This makes sense because the whole body is one unit or system.
It can be very intimidating to start yoga on your own and to put together routines that make sense. It is also fairly easy to get hurt doing things wrong, but this book presents a sane and easy to follow approach. If you have a back problem, I would also pick up Back Care Basics: A Doctor's Gentle Yoga Program for Back and Neck Pain Relief. This is THE book on the subject as far as I'm concerned, but the level of detail is higher with less of a broad scope.
Also, if you are serious about doing all the poses correctly and want to get the most benefit from this book, then [[ASIN:1930485042 30 Essential Yoga Poses: For Beginning Students and Their Teachers] would give you more routines beyond this book and more importantly detailed instructions for all the poses including the ones that are used in the book that I am reviewing.
Although I am a fairly advanced yoga practitioner, I use this book regularly. If I had to reduce my review to two words it would be SIMPLE and EFFECTIVE. It has all meat, no fluff and no hype. In addition, the author has excellent credentials. She is the editor-and-chief of FIT and FIT YOGA magazines and has been studying yoga for over 20 years in a variety of traditions. She also studied with some of the top yoga masters and taught in a variety of settings including hospitals.
You can't go wrong with this book and it is reasonably priced. I believe it will also be helpful to those with back problems, but if that is your situation then I think the other book above that I mention is important to own as well. You can't afford to make mistakes with a delicate back. If you are reasonably healthy in this regard, then or are already familiar with yoga then maybe you can get away with just this ONE book.
I hope this review was helpful and you can see other yoga books I recommended on my profile as well as a listmania list on the topic. Good luck with your yoga and thanks for reading my review.

The Ultimate ReferenceReview Date: 2002-04-06
It's not only great man-to-man advice in this book though. The beautiful, and very successful Monica Brant offers advice from a woman's perspective, which is of use to both male and female readers. Also, the people behind the cameras talk about what they look for in a model in the 'Lessons From The Other Side' section. All invaluable knowledge. The structure of the text is such that you can read from cover to cover, but also go straight to a particular topic and still have all the information you need.
In short, if you're serious about a career as a fitness model, or just curious about what such a job would involve, then you cannot afford to pass up on this book. Agencies, self-promotion, tricks of the trade, training programs, possible employers, useful resources and even haircuts are all covered. I've found this book an exceptional resource, and my thanks to Clark Bartram for writing it.

Now YOU'VE got a friend in the business!Review Date: 2002-03-11
Clark Bartram's own accounts of his success are honest, candid, and loaded with advice and encouragement for aspiring fitness models - guys and girls. You really feel like he's opening up and telling you everything you need to know. Plus, a lot of his influential friends - agents, photographers, and magazine editors - have contributed chapters explaining the business from every angle.
You come away learning that fitness modeling isn't just about being in tremendous shape, it's about being a shrewd businessperson with a positive attitude. You really learn what it takes - and as a bonus you get simple but effective advice on training and nutrition to keep in top shape all year long.
If you decide you want to be a fitness model after reading this book, you'll feel like you have some real friends in the industry. If you call anyone mentioned in the book and tell them that you read it, I think they'd give you a real shot if you're serious. If you decide you don't want to be a fitness model after reading this book, you'll still have a positive guide with powerful advice you can use to look, feel, and be your very best.

Title: The Art of Getting Well
Author: David Spero, R.N.
"Illness is the best teacher, awareness is the best medicine, self care is the best care." David Spero's health-coaching motto.
They say timing is everything, very true of the arrival of this book for my review. After lying awake most of the night with my throbbing limbs, hands and feet, I opened my package and thought "Oh no, not another self help book." Ultimately I quickly changed my mind as I started to read this practical and informative guide to a 5 step program for recovery. The aim of this book is to provide a key to improving our quality of life and even possibly improve our overall condition.
The book is based on science and medicine and readers will find references in the back of the book. David Spero's own professional and personal experience provides the background and basis. It has been written for the millions of people suffering from a "chronic" or "progressive" condition and all caregivers. I believe anyone that reads it would benefit.
Included are true stories, easy to identify with, where to get help, how to ask for it but most importantly, the book encourages readers to take responsibility for themselves. Educate yourself about your condition, identify your body's signals and be proactive in the course of treatment. Perhaps the first step is to understand that we DESERVE to be able to take the time to help ourselves, slow down and enjoy our lives. Pain is a personal experience and to each individual it is `very real.'
The author, David Spero R.N. has devoted over 30 years as an R.N./Health Coach, specializing in chronic illnesses. His goal is to maximize the quality of life of his patients. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis approximately 20 years ago. He has personally experienced illness and has learned how to help himself and improve his situation. His book is well written in a warm and caring way, inspiring readers to live their lives as successfully as possible. In this reviewer's opinion, he has achieved his goal. He shares his depth of knowledge and confirms his motto. After reading Chapter 1 your will want to finish it quickly, then reread it in detail as you set up your own program for wellness.
I Thank you David, for setting me on a realistic course and highly recommend this book. Reviewer: Cheryl Ellis, Allbooks Reviews
The Art of Living WellReview Date: 2002-07-11
An easy, insightful readReview Date: 2008-02-10
The author recommends useful tips for recovering from an illness: put your life before your illness, listen to your body, conserve your energy for healing, change the things that harm you, and get the help you need. His recommendations come from what's worked for patients, friends, family members, and a lit review of what other authors have written.
Thanks to the tips in The Art of Getting Well, I feel better equipped to recognize when I feel stressed, to calm myself down in a soothing way, to recognize the signs and ask for help when I need it, and visualize healing and becoming the healthy person I want to be, to honoring myself by putting myself first without negatively impacting others.
This is a book I will keep on my shelves to reflect upon for years to come.
