I already own a well-worn copy of Linda Coss's first cookbook "What's to Eat?", so I eagerly anticipated her newest selection of recipes. I wasn't disappointed. Many people are amazed that I cook and bake such GOOD food without dairy, eggs or nuts. I credit Linda for creating many of our favorites.

Here's a scrumptious sample of what we've been eating this week from "What Else is to Eat?":

Iced Honey Cookies (page 126)- we took these to a friend's house for dinner. They were a huge hit...easy to make and yummy to eat!

Spaghetti and Meatball Soup (page 26)- "This is really good, Mom!" was all I needed to hear.

Slow Cooker Beef With Rosemary and Potatoes (page 37)- Crockpots make life a bit easier, don't they? In just a few minutes I had everything in the slow cooker and voila', eight hours later, a delicious meal. Next time I'll chop the rosemary finely as my children picked off the "green pieces".

Linda's Signature Grilled Chicken (page 49)- Just four ingredients in a zip-top bag, with some chicken. I didn't grill, though, as our high temperature was 38 degrees that day, but it worked fine in the oven.

Disappearing Chocolate Oatmeal Delights (page 124)- these really did disappear in our house!

Coss's first recipe book ("What's to Eat?") is perfect for those who need basic food allergy recipes for items like pancakes, waffles, chocolate chip cookies and plain white cake. I find Linda's second book, "What Else is to Eat?", ideal for those of us who have the essentials, but are now hungry for the next level. Get them both and amaze your family and friends with delicious dishes.

I had the honor to be a recipe tester for this book, so I got a sneak preview of some of the recipes ... and I liked what I tasted!

For my part, I tested and fell in love with the Pineapple Fried Rice (a brilliant blend of flavors), Kevin's Carrots (maple glazed, yum!), and the Dilled Pan-Roasted Carrots (can you tell I like carrots?). Time wise, I still haven't managed to make my way through the many recipes I want to make, such as the Wholesome Snack Muffins, Spaghetti and Meatball Soup, Hoisin Chicken, Everyday Barbecue Sauce, Molasses Chewies, and the Incredible Apricot Coffee Cake (with a name like that, how can I pass it up?). But, considering how easy her recipes are to throw together, I will likely find myself reaching for this cookbook to whip up one of the many dinner recipes when we are down to the basics in our cupboard and fridge.

Linda keeps it simple with recipes that use everyday pantry items and have relatively few ingredients. In fact, it is easy to picture her kitchen: your basic selection of easy to find dried herbs and spices; necessities such as white and wheat flour, brown and white sugars, cooking oil, dairy-free margarine, vinegar, rice, broth, canned fruits and vegetables, inexpensive dried fruits, and a small assortment of pasta shapes; and some "shortcut" condiments that you can find in nearly every grocery store, such as bottled garlic and ginger, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, chili sauce, Dijon mustard, and perhaps a jar of sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil. Add some fresh fruits and vegetables to your cart, along with some chicken and beef, and you can make most of the recipes in this book while keeping well within (even below) budget!

As for the vitals, the cookbook is a handy size (roughly 8.5" x 5.5"), contains 115 recipes, and covers the basic range of soups, salads, meals, vegetables, breakfast items, snacks, and desserts. Linda moves away from the norm, taking a practical approach to chapters. Rather than "entrees" the chapters are broken down to type, like Beef, Chicken, and Pasta, and rather than "desserts" you will find chapters for Cookies and Cakes. Those few that don't possess a sizable enough category, fit snuggly into the Miscellaneous chapter. The layout is extremely neat and tidy, with just one recipe per page (many with room for notes).

Highly Recommend!

I've had this book for about 2 months now and I've got to say it's the best food allergy cookbook in my collection. I like it even better than Linda's first book, which I've always viewed as my "food allergy cooking bible." Every recipe I've tried has been a big hit with the entire household. I especially appreciate how ridiculously quick and easy the dinner recipes are. I work full time and don't have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen. "Four Ingredient Chicken," "California Flank Steak" (preparation time: 5 minutes), "Seven Minute Soup" -- now this is the way I like to cook! If you're trying to make delicious dairy-, egg-, and nut-free meals that the whole family will enjoy, but you can't spend all day cooking (or all week running all over town looking for oddball ingredients), you've got to get this book.

Ms. Coss' new cookbook WHAT ELSE IS TO EAT? is just as good, if not better, than her first one! Of course, I headed straight to the dessert sections of the cookbook because that's what I find the most fun to cook (and eat.) There are so many "real" recipes for bread, muffins, cookies and cake. In addition, I really liked the soup recipes that were included in the cookbook as well as many of the chicken ones. The ingredients are all regular, normal, healthy things that I can find at my local grocery store. And, the recipes were for normal foods that my entire family would eat. So often, I find myself cooking something different for my son because none of us want to eat foods that are dairy-, egg-, and nut-free.

What I most loved about this book was how quick and simple the recipes are. I'm not a gourmet chef, and I really don't have the time or inclination to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I thought Ms. Coss' recipes were very do-able and healthy to boot! There were also quite a few slow-cooker recipes which work well with moms' and kids' busy schedules. I can definitely see myself trying out many of the main dish recipes in the next few weeks.

My Favorite Yoga for Back Pain Book

The book, Yoga Heals Your Back, can help you get started on the road to back pain relief. It's author, Rita Trieger, editor-in-chief of Fit and Fit Yoga, has been practicing yoga and meditation for more than 20 years. In addition to good introductory information regarding back pain and yoga, Yoga Heals Your Back includes several 10-minute routines designed to stretch and strengthen you back - simple daily programs that only take a few minutes.

The first routine is a morning stretch that can be done on your bed or on the floor. It's a great way to check in with your body and begin your day in a healthy way. The next routine is called, Align the Spine. It's a gentle yet invigorating series of eleven poses that will get your blood flowing while giving your spine and hips a good stretch. Other routines include:

Backbends - to correct your posture, tone your back muscles, and improve circulation.

More Backbends - deeper work for your back muscles.

Moving Forward - forward folds to soothe your nervous system and stretch your spine.

Unwind - six poses to relax your neck and shoulders.

Warm-up For More Vigorous Work - 6 poses to get your blood flowing and warm your muscles.

Strengthen the Lower Back, Hips, and Glutes - standing poses to build lower body strength.

Abdominal Strength - great moves to strengthen your core.

Modified Sun Series - A full body workout in 14 flowing movements.

Yoga Heals Your Back also has a chapter on using props (chair, blocks) to modify poses and concludes with an introduction to meditation.

I turned to this book for guidance recently when I overexerted myself jogging and ended up with an aching low back. The gentle poses helped me stretch and strengthen safely and I am happy to report that my back pain has resolved.

So, if you are ready to give your back some care and attention with yoga, Yoga Heals Your Back offers a great collection of 10-minute yoga routines to guide you.

Simple, Effective and Sensible Routines - Physiology Teaching Fellow Review
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-01
I'm an ex-Physiology Teaching Fellow with a strong background in yoga. I own and have reviewed many books and this particular volume has much to offer. One of the things I most like about it is that it is broken down into 10-25 minute routines that anyone can do. Also, the author who has excellent credentials has simplified routines and covers the use of props which can make it possible for older people or others with limitations to safely practice yoga.

This book is attractively illustrated, concise and can be something you implement right away. While I would have liked to see more detail on the correct performance of some of the poses, there is certainly enough to get you started. The routines are also complementary even though they are listed by body area. This makes sense because the whole body is one unit or system.

It can be very intimidating to start yoga on your own and to put together routines that make sense. It is also fairly easy to get hurt doing things wrong, but this book presents a sane and easy to follow approach. If you have a back problem, I would also pick up Back Care Basics: A Doctor's Gentle Yoga Program for Back and Neck Pain Relief. This is THE book on the subject as far as I'm concerned, but the level of detail is higher with less of a broad scope.

Also, if you are serious about doing all the poses correctly and want to get the most benefit from this book, then [[ASIN:1930485042 30 Essential Yoga Poses: For Beginning Students and Their Teachers] would give you more routines beyond this book and more importantly detailed instructions for all the poses including the ones that are used in the book that I am reviewing.

Although I am a fairly advanced yoga practitioner, I use this book regularly. If I had to reduce my review to two words it would be SIMPLE and EFFECTIVE. It has all meat, no fluff and no hype. In addition, the author has excellent credentials. She is the editor-and-chief of FIT and FIT YOGA magazines and has been studying yoga for over 20 years in a variety of traditions. She also studied with some of the top yoga masters and taught in a variety of settings including hospitals.

You can't go wrong with this book and it is reasonably priced. I believe it will also be helpful to those with back problems, but if that is your situation then I think the other book above that I mention is important to own as well. You can't afford to make mistakes with a delicate back. If you are reasonably healthy in this regard, then or are already familiar with yoga then maybe you can get away with just this ONE book.

I hope this review was helpful and you can see other yoga books I recommended on my profile as well as a listmania list on the topic. Good luck with your yoga and thanks for reading my review.

This is a great book, but I have a lot of trouble following books and so I bought the video, which allowed me to learn better. Both the book and the video are great. Yogilates is a calming yet invigorating workout. Not too easy, not too hard. And one of the few exercises I've actually been able to stick with consistently. Enjoyable and well-taught.

I own many pilates and yoga books and think that this offers a good resource for a person that wants to see positions detailed for a home practice combining the two disciplines. The only objection that I have is the choice of model demonstrating poses for the book. One in particular is an older woman with a long, gray, messy ponytail and awful looking feet. Not exactly an inspiration. It isn't necessary to put a covergirl on the pages of the book, but her disheveled images are a distraction from the intended purpose.

this book is extremely well written and easy to follow for anyone who has the desire to learn pilates and/or yoga. while it is usually more effective to meet with an instructor, if the instructor isn't Jonathan, buy this book. having taken a workshop with the author, it would be difficult for me to be instructed by anyone else, therefore having this book to refer to is completely necessary. I encourage anyone who has the desire to do something that will give incredible results, to get this book and follow it several times a week. you will not be disappointed!

Working as a fitness model can be an enjoyable and profitable career. However, there are many pitfalls and dangers to avoid on this path, and for the first time someone who not only works, but has had tremendous success in this field is available to guide you. From creating your first portfolio, to the details of endorsement contracts, fitness model extraordinaire Clark Bartram will advise you, drawing on years of experience. You'll read about the great satisfaction such a career can bring, but perhaps more importantly you'll be told the truth about the reality of being a fitness model. This includes not only what attributes you'll need to succeed, but also your attitude, and how much money you can honestly expect to earn per shoot. In any field, links with people on the 'inside' are often what's needed to get that big break, and there's plenty of insiders in this book sharing their knowledge with you.

It's not only great man-to-man advice in this book though. The beautiful, and very successful Monica Brant offers advice from a woman's perspective, which is of use to both male and female readers. Also, the people behind the cameras talk about what they look for in a model in the 'Lessons From The Other Side' section. All invaluable knowledge. The structure of the text is such that you can read from cover to cover, but also go straight to a particular topic and still have all the information you need.

In short, if you're serious about a career as a fitness model, or just curious about what such a job would involve, then you cannot afford to pass up on this book. Agencies, self-promotion, tricks of the trade, training programs, possible employers, useful resources and even haircuts are all covered. I've found this book an exceptional resource, and my thanks to Clark Bartram for writing it.

It's so refreshing to finally find a book that applies specifically to the interests of fitness models and that covers the topic so thoroughly. Weeding through the books written for fashion models was becoming tiresome, so I was pleasantly surprised when I finally came across this book. While reading it, I was ecstatic to find that it was packed full of useful information. I was able to identify the mistakes I've been routinely making and start implementing Clark's invaluable advice. All of the other books I've purchased have not been as useful to me as this one book. I recommend it to anyone who is serious about fitness modeling!

This total insider's guide to the fitness modeling industry offers valuable information in a conversational manner, lets you know who's looking for the next fitness superstars, AND tells you exactly how to contact them.

Clark Bartram's own accounts of his success are honest, candid, and loaded with advice and encouragement for aspiring fitness models - guys and girls. You really feel like he's opening up and telling you everything you need to know. Plus, a lot of his influential friends - agents, photographers, and magazine editors - have contributed chapters explaining the business from every angle.

You come away learning that fitness modeling isn't just about being in tremendous shape, it's about being a shrewd businessperson with a positive attitude. You really learn what it takes - and as a bonus you get simple but effective advice on training and nutrition to keep in top shape all year long.

If you decide you want to be a fitness model after reading this book, you'll feel like you have some real friends in the industry. If you call anyone mentioned in the book and tell them that you read it, I think they'd give you a real shot if you're serious. If you decide you don't want to be a fitness model after reading this book, you'll still have a positive guide with powerful advice you can use to look, feel, and be your very best.

For anyone who has ever argued about chips v. crudite with their husband, this is the book for you. Very insightful and realistic look at how we eat and how it affects those around us, including how someone ELSE eats effects our own eating habits (anyone remember dating that guy and gaining 10 lbs. on his diet of beer and wings?). Fun little vignettes and quizzes keep the book flowing. A must read for anyone struggling with their partners' eating habits.

I'll be honest, all in all I liked reading about Andy's journey with CF. I can understand how he feels and he does a good job of describing what he has been through. While reading i felt as though half of this book was written to help you understand andy and his journey and the other half is simply a "look what i did." At times he came off as whiny and emotional. Also although it's never metioned it's written as though andy grew up with "deep pockets." Which is fine, it just helps me understand him. Overall i feel for you Andy. Fight the good fight

Title: The Art of Getting Well

Author: David Spero, R.N.

"Illness is the best teacher, awareness is the best medicine, self care is the best care." David Spero's health-coaching motto.

They say timing is everything, very true of the arrival of this book for my review. After lying awake most of the night with my throbbing limbs, hands and feet, I opened my package and thought "Oh no, not another self help book." Ultimately I quickly changed my mind as I started to read this practical and informative guide to a 5 step program for recovery. The aim of this book is to provide a key to improving our quality of life and even possibly improve our overall condition.

The book is based on science and medicine and readers will find references in the back of the book. David Spero's own professional and personal experience provides the background and basis. It has been written for the millions of people suffering from a "chronic" or "progressive" condition and all caregivers. I believe anyone that reads it would benefit.

Included are true stories, easy to identify with, where to get help, how to ask for it but most importantly, the book encourages readers to take responsibility for themselves. Educate yourself about your condition, identify your body's signals and be proactive in the course of treatment. Perhaps the first step is to understand that we DESERVE to be able to take the time to help ourselves, slow down and enjoy our lives. Pain is a personal experience and to each individual it is `very real.'

The author, David Spero R.N. has devoted over 30 years as an R.N./Health Coach, specializing in chronic illnesses. His goal is to maximize the quality of life of his patients. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis approximately 20 years ago. He has personally experienced illness and has learned how to help himself and improve his situation. His book is well written in a warm and caring way, inspiring readers to live their lives as successfully as possible. In this reviewer's opinion, he has achieved his goal. He shares his depth of knowledge and confirms his motto. After reading Chapter 1 your will want to finish it quickly, then reread it in detail as you set up your own program for wellness.

I Thank you David, for setting me on a realistic course and highly recommend this book. Reviewer: Cheryl Ellis, Allbooks Reviews

You don't have to have a chronic illness to get a lot out of Spero's "The Art of Getting Well." Maybe that's because living in our fast paced and relatively crazed culture qualifies all of us as chronically ill. Whatever the case, the accessible style and reassuring tone of this book give you the confidence and motivation to make real changes in your life. I'm especially pleased that Spero does not fall into the "blame the victim" camp. Getting sick is not our fault, although we can have a say in how or whether we get well, up to a point. Sometimes our luck runs out, but our spirit can still remain strong, furthered along by the compassion of bonafide healers and primo storytellers like Spero. Get two: one for yourself and one for a friend.

One reviewer mentioned that the authors writes in a chatty, conversational tone--that's an accurate description. I found this book an easy read and very insightful and useful for helping me get on track to recovering and caring for myself, as well as preventing future relapses.

The author recommends useful tips for recovering from an illness: put your life before your illness, listen to your body, conserve your energy for healing, change the things that harm you, and get the help you need. His recommendations come from what's worked for patients, friends, family members, and a lit review of what other authors have written.

Thanks to the tips in The Art of Getting Well, I feel better equipped to recognize when I feel stressed, to calm myself down in a soothing way, to recognize the signs and ask for help when I need it, and visualize healing and becoming the healthy person I want to be, to honoring myself by putting myself first without negatively impacting others.

This is a book I will keep on my shelves to reflect upon for years to come.

Ignorance is not Bliss when humanity is threatened with life endangering epidemics. Verona Fonte has created an essential handbook to guide us in step-by-step preparations for survival in case if an outbreak of the bird flu. While the subject is serious and packed with important information, the text is clear and lively, leavened by wit and humor. We are encouraged, not only to understand the nature of the disease, how it spreads, how to avoid contamination, how to take care of ourselves and loved ones, but also to create webs of mutual support within our communities. Verona Fonte reminds us of the necessity to be informed and prepared, but also to assist each other in a spirit of intelligent compassion. I heartily recommend it.

An Outstanding Introduction to the Bird Flu Pandemic

Bird Flu, What to Do provides the reader with an excellent overview of the issues we are likely to face during the upcoming influenza pandemic. The book is written in an easy to understand style that makes for pleasant reading despite the difficult subject matter. Dr. Fonte's liberal use of humor helps make her discussion of these unpleasant topics easier to digest. I recommend this book to anyone trying to come to terms with the possibility of a Bird Flu pandemic and who needs more information about this issue to help them decide what they should do. This book has an important role as a good way to introduce the topic to someone new to the issue. While it touches on the difficulties we are likely to encounter during a pandemic, it does so in a reassuring way, avoiding the dramatization of the worst case as found in some other books on the subject.

This book should be required reading for everyone living in this country (and other countries as well). If everyone took its message to heart and followed its advice, we would all be a lot safer. No need for color-coded alerts or political hype when Bird Flu - What to Do is only a bookstore or online order form away.

A straightforward instruction manual for readers of all backgrounds

Bird Flu What To Do: Prepare To Survive by Verona Fonte Ph.D. (a psychologist for over twenty years' experience) with contributions from five experienced doctors, is a straightforward instruction manual for readers of all backgrounds about what to do and how to survive in a pandemic, particularly a bird flu pandemic. Chapters address how to prepare, including storing water and making sure water is safe to drink, what food and other goods to get and how to store it, healthy habits to adopt now to strengthen one's immune system, networking for a safer community, caregiving tips, what to do when death occurs, and much more. Bird flu specifically is extremely virulent and easily contagious simply from being in proximity to the sick; Bird Flu What To Do does not pretend to have a magic solution to the grim realities of a pandemic, but rather presents all the emergency advice that medical science and common sense have to offer in no-nonsense terms. Highly recommended.

Fonte has shown us that no matter what the crisis in our lives, if we prepare by being informed, knowing our neighbors and community, and face the challenges ahead with courage, we can weather any crisis the future may bring. I recommend this book highly!

With all those books on breastfeeding out there, you might be tempted to buy the good-old question-answer based book. But believe me you will still have the: Is this what a doctor might tell me? question back there in your head. This book, however; presents you with more complete answers that experts on the breastfeeding subject have studied. You will end up being an expert on breastfeeding yourself. Even friends call me to check a prescripted medicine on the chapter that classifies almost-all prescriptions with scales as to how they affect and enter the breastmilk. Be assured, you will be fully satisfied and, as I found myself; exceed your expectations.

As a gynecologist based in Spain, I found this book extremely helpful while counseling my patients about breastfeeding, and while breastfeeding myself. I think most obstetrical textbooks do not cover enough the aspect of breastfeeding, and numerous questions remain to be answered, some as simple as: both breasts or one breast?. These simple questions, however, are an important source of stress to new mothers. Apart from that, the more "medical" aspects of the book are also exceptional. A must for all medical professionals involved in pregnancy, birth and infant care.

This should be required reading for any physician caring for the breastfeeding mother or the breastfed baby. With all of the mythology surrounding breastfeeding and the wide range of advice given to nursing mothers, it is essential that practitioners give accurate, informed advice. Reading this book will allow health care professionals to do so.

Puts an end to the confusion about Chronic Fatigue

Dr. Ali is a brilliant doctor who understands chronic fatigue and the human "canaries". This book gave me peace and reassurance that non-drug treatments are the only way to treat this disease. There are so many options and drugs that medical doctor's may prescribe for chronic fatigue, only because they do not understand. This book eliminates the confusion surrounding those looking for answers. His explanations fit with all that I have experienced in my journey of healing. Thank you Dr. Ali for your wisdom and your willingness to share with the rest of us.

I have had ME/CFS for 13 years now and for the first 4 life was bad. I read everything I could and this book provided the best solutions for me!
Even so it took me 5 more years for things to work as it took me that long to find a doctor in New Zealand that agreed to try and help - finding a medic to help is the most differcult task. Even then we had to agree on a modified treatment but at least he read the book as well and it helped.
Dr Ali provides a detailed solution to the problem. The solutions offered will not apply to all but they will provide a strong basis to find your own

We CFS sufferers are going to change the face of medicine. This book explains why and how. If you have CFS you must stop going to any doctor who prescribes a drug to relieve your symptoms. You must stop going to an allergist who is still giving shots using the useless RAST test. They are just making your coffin more comfortable. Get to a holistic physician who knows that treating and reversing CFS requires nondrug nutrient therapies and effective allergy treatment. Parents should especially read this book to realize the extreme importance of identifying allergy problems in their children now - before they develop autoimmune disorders and emotional disturbances when they get older.

Turning Hopelessness into Hope!

As i turned the pages of this book, i felt that for the first time in 9years someone knew exactly how my body was functioning, and could explain why! This was such a relief. So many books are about personal experiences of the condition, but they do not answer any questions. This common sense presentation, backed with clinical research findings and a human face in holistic medicine, was so refreshing! Congratualtons on your pioneering work, would love to know if you have any recent findings or publications or how i can find a practioner in the UK that follows and treats patients in line with your philosophy. Reading the book, for the first time made me realise that Chronic means now and forever, a hard fact to swallow, however what it did do was show me a way of managing the symptoms so that i might have some quality of life in the future. From my lowest point when i contemplated ringing the Samaratians i picked up this book and it has given me Hope! Thank you so much

Like many others in this group I felt much the same. I read this book 5 years ago and I still look at it as a book that guided me in the right direction. Today I live a normal life but follow many of the guidelines laid in this book. One important rule to getting better is to look for problems and not expect sympathy. Don't expect a wonder pill this sickness is a wakeup call you will appreciate in the future if you make the commitment. This book along with an open attitude and continuous changes & education will help you get back your life if you suffer from the pain of CFS.
