A very excellent bookReview Date: 2005-05-23
This book is written to women, and I am a man, but I thought that this was actually a very good idea. There are a couple of references to "men should do this instead," when they are needed, but I thought that focusing on one gender made the book very clear and very understandable.
Which reminds me of the coolest thing about this book, which is the illustrations. All of the illustrations are of the same woman. And this is very cool, because I was able to tell really quickly what good posture was and what was not. By focusing just on women, and by focusing just on one person giving examples of good posture and bad posture, it made the book very understandable.
Also, Janice Novak gives the meat of the book in the first ten pages, where she talks about her "One minute to better posture" exercise. This is a really cool exercise that will transform your life instantly. It's really cool, because the book starts out with a real bang and then the rest of the book supports that initial bang until the end.
The only improvement that I would suggest for the next edition is to have pictures of all of the exercises, and have two pictures for the two-step exercises. This would increase the size of the book by about twenty pages, but I think it would be worth it. I can be slow sometimes and pictures help me a lot.
Useful Book That WorksReview Date: 2005-12-18
I have been doing the basic one-minute routine for about eight months now. My neck pain (and tension -- I used to have two bands of muscle of almost wooden hardness running down the back "corners" of my neck) is reduced about 80-90%, and I continue to improve. I also look taller and slimmer, as promised (my parents both said to me, "you're so tall!" as if it were a new thing -- but then I suppose it was). I would agree that you will look ten pounds taller and ten pounds slimmer. Maybe more. Now, since then I've also *gained* about ten pounds...but that's another story.

Practical help.Review Date: 2003-11-27
The writing style is easy to read & understand, & so are the exercise descriptions. The exercises are also very easy to do (as opposed to some posture books, where the descriptions are hard to follow, & just not practical).
My lower back is feeling a lot better thanks to the tips for stretching & standing up straight in this book.

Simple rules for making healthier and more delicious food choicesReview Date: 2008-11-29
The authors harken back to better days of grandma's home-grown food: sweet peaches bursting with flavor, homemade pies, succulent pork chops from the family's pig, saffron-colored egg yokes, fresh foods preserved and canned that still taste like the garden.
They contrast these flavorful foods with MegaMart offerings of odorless, uniform tomatoes, tasteless strawberries, and waxed fruits laced with pesticides. The book is written not by nutritionists, but by eaters who missed the taste of real food.
Real Food refers to food that is:
* Delicious
* Produced as locally as possible
* Sustainable
* Affordable
* Accessible
Each section has an Industrial Agriculture Snapshot that explains current practices and pitfalls of industrial farming; organic and sustainable options; how to find sources; a few recipes; and profiles of farmers who are making a difference and trying to bring food back to where it should be: healthy, flavorful, and environmentally sound.
The authors contrast industrial with sustainable agriculture and provide information on how foods are grown, raised, harvested, processed, and labeled. They cover produce, meat, fish, grains, dairy, water, sweeteners, oils, juices, the list goes on. Common terms in labeling, issues regarding GMOs, and foods to avoid are also addressed as is the environmental and societal impact of the consumer's choice in food. Book includes a section of notes, a list of resources, books for further reading and an index.
This is an excellent introduction for those who don't know much about where their food comes from and the different options available to them. It's written in an easy, conversational style and it doesn't get bogged down in details. These two women did an excellent job. Five stars!
The Real Food RevivalReview Date: 2008-10-03
The Real Food RevivalReview Date: 2007-07-16
The authors propose a real food revival to counter these costly effects. This revival takes the form of understanding the processes that our food undergoes to get to us and determining the freshest, least processed food products on the market. At first, this task seems almost impossible given that many of us have very little time to research, seek out, and then prepare these products. However, this book sets out in an easy to understand way, various practices that reduce food nutrition and taste starting from the raising of animals and the growing of crops through the antibodies given to these animals and the pesticides used on these plants to the chemicals and freezing processes that keep foods looking flawless during transportation and storage. The authors then explain ways that consumers can reduce costs and increase potential nutritional value of the food they buy. The simplest of these plans is to buy local foods in season, limiting the amount of chemicals that are needed to keep the product looking perfect during long periods of transportation.

Easy, Simple Baby Steps That Anyone Can DoReview Date: 2007-10-17
Unlike other books, this one leads you into the recommended changes very gradually, so you don't come away after reading it thinking you cannot possible remember everything you are supposed to do and give up before even trying.
My recommendation is not to think about this process as a 10-week long program.
Just take it one day at a time, in week-long blocks. Mark the changes on your calendar. Don't look at the whole 10 weeks. Just look at what you will do during the first week. Then you look at what's on schedule for the following week when it starts. And so forth.
If you are consistent, you'll see dramatic changes.
I needed quickie proof that something in this book works, so I began the skin treatment first. Since you see your face every day when you wake up and before you go to bed, your face is a good place to start seeing changes. When your complexion shows improvement even after a couple of days, you'll think...."Wow...I ought to do those other things in the book."
Before you realize it, Voila! You'll have lost a few pounds, and the people at work will ask you what you've been doing with yourself.
I'm on week four. It must be working because my clothes don't fit as tightly and my skin looks GREAT.
Since the pig-out holiday season is starting up, don't punish yourself if you fall off the wagon. Pick up where you left off. One binge isn't going to result in total failure...just a little set-back from which you can quickly recover.
And if it takes you 12 weeks or 15 weeks, just keep doing this program. It worked for my husband, and it is working for me.
Lots of good advice, some unique informationReview Date: 2004-03-09
This author is not on the low-carb bandwagon (recommends the more usual lower-fat, whole-grain diet) but this is in keeping with such books as "South Beach Diet."
What's valuable to me are lists of supplements and what degenerative processes they help deter, and a general plan for good health in your middle age and beyond. This is a readable, useful book.

Not just for Women! Review Date: 2008-06-24
Karon integrates exercises like Pilates (long a favorite exercise of dancers) with exercises usually only performed by elite athletes like "plyometrics" and interval training (made popular recently in an article published in The Australian Journal of Applied Physiology). Pilates was started by Joseph Pilates as a way to rehabilitate wounded soldiers during World War I. It emphasizes control, strengthening and stretching of key muscles in the body. Plyometrics uses quick short movements to help build strength, and speed. Interval training usually involves high speed workouts along with lower intensity workouts such as sprints, while performing a longer run. Interval training helps burn calories and increases cardiovascular fitness.
Karon's program is FUN! Her writing style is easy to read, follow, and is entertaining. She takes you from the basics, to more advanced exercises as your skills improve. By the time you're done you'll have a better body, not just a better "bikini body."

My husband and I have now been following this nutrient-dense diet plan for over 30 days. We both feel great and have lost weight. My husband's chronic acid-reflux is now history and the "brain-fog" has cleared away completely for both of us. Robin's creative recipes make this lifestyle eating plan interesting and delicious (no deprived feelings whatsoever).
It just feels so good to know my cells are happy to receive the nutrients they need to thrive and keep me healthy.
Thanks Robin...now I'll be looking for you to publish a full cookbook soon! God Bless You.

I completely restructured my pantry and more so my thinking about what I put where my mouth is.
Supplements are just that, the true benefit comes from whole fruits and vegetables. I've been a lacto-ovo vegan for about 18 months and still going strong. My biggest challenge was the proper intake of protein. After reading Brendan's book I'm closer to an inner and outer nutritional balance than ever.

Now about the book... For such a short book, it's PACKED with information! This book deserves a lot of credit for providing such a complete picture of stress - what it is, where it comes from, how it affects your body, and how to deal with it. Stress is stress, regardless of the source. Although this book is mainly concerned with stress from physical exertion, the information will help with whatever kind of stress you have.
The recipe section in this book, though short, is excellent. Several of these recipes have become regulars in my diet and are committed to memory. One unique thing about the recipes is they show which nutrients each ingredient is adding. For example, a banana adds electrolytes, a half tbsp hemp oil adds Essential Fatty Acids, pumpkin seeds add iron and zinc, and so on. I really enjoy this feature; it helps me better understand the nutrition (rather than just following a recipe). It's probably my favorite part of the book, next to the information on stress.
I've read at least a dozen different raw food health books and they all have their merits, but I have to say that this book is unique. I am so glad to have it in my collection. I'm giving copies to some of my health-conscious friends for Christmas this year.

My son had a problem with shingles as I was reading this book. I feel that the supplement helped him recover faster, as he started getting better as soon as he started taking it.
There is a minefield of information in this book on the benefits of Olive Leaf Extract, but for my part, I wasn't interested in all of the extensive medical jargon in the book that went along with it.
