Who ever heard of a diet book that you couldn't put down and had you laughing out loud ala Bridget Jones and Stephanie Plum? Think Ya-Yas go on a diet. 3fc's is full of great info on everything from Atkins to Zone and written by real people who have gone through it all. I borrowed it from the library and am ordering one for myself and another for my daughter. Three cheers for the original three fat chicks, the Barnett sisters. Hip, hip, hooray!!!

Ever wonder why one plan works great for someone but not for you? And once you get started on something and you can't figure out how to fit all the pieces together and need some help, where do you go? This book. It has it all. It's plain to see that the three sisters have seen it all and done it all, and their community members have as well. There's a huge amount of useful information, lots of humor, and it's all honest. No holds barred.

Dieting is hard work, and keeping it off is even harder. 3 fat chicks know the struggle and share it with everyone they touch.

Hilarious, Down-to-Earth and Helpful.

We've seen the television ads, but which weight loss program is for you? These former "fat" chicks, of the well-known Web site, have got the skinny.

Whether Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, South Beach or surgery, their book reveals all, providing detailed analyses, pros and cons and participant comments about cost, commitment and outcomes. Hilarious, down-to-earth and very, very helpful.

After providing free recipes and encouragement for years via their website, I am delighted to see that these sisters published their own book. It's a good comparison of the variety of weight loss plans being marketed today. The book has a good amount of motivational material also.

This book served me as a guide and inspiration for major life changes through the 1980's. Over the last 8-10 years I had not only lost the book but had lost the motivation it provided. I immediately reread it on receipt and have been slowly moving my eating and exercise habits back to that which had served me so well.

I would strongly recommend Dr Cooper & his philosophy to anyone who is serious about taking control of their life. Hard work that pays tremendous dividends.

I found this book to be very well written, it's easy to understand and it's easy to read. If you follow the advice in this book I believe you will live a long, healthy & satisfied life; and you will greatly reduced the chances of you suffering from strokes, heart attacks & disease etc. Kenneth Cooper displays a wealth of knowledge & experience which you can only benefit from and you will be doing yourself a favour if you get this book. Compared to some other books on health & fitness that I have read, this book would have to be one of the best.

Although I prefer Dr. Cooper's first book, "Aerobics" this book is also well written, easy to understand, and conveys the importance of aerobic (principly in the form of jogging/running) as presented by the author.

Written 14 years after the original "Aerobics", Dr. Cooper has continued to evolve his principles about aerobic conditioning in this book

In this book Cooper also presents his thoughts on what constitutes productive and effective exercise as opposed to ineffective exercise and exercising to the point of over training.

I recommend this book to people who are new to exercise or people who are just starting out.

I bought'Aerobics' by this author in 1975 when I was 43 and slipping into the state where I was puffing to tie my shoe laces
a friend recommended the book. Without doing anything too drastic in the diet department other than to increase fruit and vegetable consumption and skip fried food.
I started off in the Poor category and commenced the running programme by walking the first week for 1 mile, having to make an effort to do so in under 20 minutes on the first day.
I followed Dr Coopers directions and was amazed to find how accurate his time estimates were and how well I felt as I reduced from 110 Kgs to 85 Kgs within 5 months.
I retired when I turned 69 and now at 73 I have a need to get my arse into gear as my weight has crept up and my cardiovascular system is in dire need of rejuvenating.
I note Dr Cooper has fine tuned his work and I am embarking on his cycling programme with confidence

Puja Thomson writes with depth and authority about one of the most terrifying experiences a woman can face. She draws from her own bout with cancer and her history as a healthcare provider, to create an indispensible guide to understanding all aspects of this disease including traditional and non-traditional treatments, insights into patient's rights, and information on what to expect and what to demand from others involved in the healing process. Had "After Shock: From Cancer Diagnosis to Healing" been written several years ago, two of my own family members might be alive today to be praising this book as I am.

What makes this book so incredibly unique is that it is not only a wealth of vital information, which would be valuable on its own. Puja Thomson looks beyond the medical into the personal chasm created when a diagnosis of cancer occurs. Sometimes the hole in our wellbeing is pre-existing, and so cancer healing needs to happen at the soul level as well as the cellular level. Readers experienced in holistic living practices will find as much to anchor them in this process as those who are only just learning about the mind-body connection to health and wellness. Thomson empowers readers to create their own wellness program by incorporating relaxation and meditation techniques, creating a meaningful atmosphere, finding certain imagery to stimulate healing and powerful moods, and, perhaps most importantly, by cultivating a deep soul connection to health, mindfulness, and spirituality.

"Puja's book was a great help to a friend of mine who was diagnosed at age 21 with inoperable lung cancer. Her words are wise, and full of wisdom from personal experience with the material covered. Clear, logical reasoning, respect, dignity and compassion run throughout the book.
Puja offers a advice and instructions on how to handle visits and treatments, including questions that should be asked, and information that should be known. Her insight is vast, and her wonderful suggestions can quickly relieve any panic and confusion that occur following such a traumatic diagnosis.
Puja also provides alternative choices to the accepted allopathic offerings, and these too are clearly and concisely discussed.
My mother had passed away 23 years ago, and I wish we had had this resource at that time. No matter what the outcome, Puja's book and the wisdom shared in it will make whatever the timing and path chosen much easier, more productive, and worth living.-Raymundo Rodriguez-Jackson, New Paltz, NY."

Anyone person suffering these illness, and has struggled with the lack of medical help, NEEDS HOPE. I felt this was truly provided in this book along with the information of Healing. Just reading this book, helped my depression of long term illness that no Dr. could see, touch or give me a Rx for. Getting older or gaining weight, being female did not cause these health problems. Seeing other accounts of similar problems has given me a place to start investigating just what is wrong with my health and so armed with this information, I think can be the first step on the path to wellness.

If you have or know someone who suffers from fibromyalgia (chronic muscle pain) or chronic fatigue, you absolutely must get this book. Don't waste one more minute, order it now. IT could save your life. Don't believe the naysayers who tell you that nothing can be done. There is plenty that can be done. Not all of it will work, but at least you now have a good place to get started, and techniques that have proven successful for others. Plus the book gives you excellent resources for finding the best doctors out there to get you well. Any questions feel free to contact me at srowe@nbn.net

I have been in the medical profession for 20 years and had to leave the field because of my condition, but until recently, have I put these practices to the test, and have found those that work for me. If you really suffer from this, trust me, YOU NEED this book. For those interested, please feel free to write me and I'll discuss with you my own treatment plan and results..

My boss bought this book for me, and I thought it was going to be just another, "yeah, you have fibromyalgia and it's a real shame, this is how you cope with it", but instead, this book CHANGED MY LIFE! (Sorry for the run-on sentence). I had so much pain that some days I couldn't get out of bed. I would find a position that was minimally pain free and not move until I was better. It got so bad that I had to use a cane so I could get to work. But I read the book and I couldn't believe the case histories. But when the pain got so bad that I thought I would lose my job, I changed my diet (hey, what did I have to lose? ) and low and behold, within a week the pain was gone (I stopped taking pain medicine everyday), the "fog" lifted and I felt better than I had in YEARS! Another side benefit, is that I have lost weight! But I recommend this book very highly. I will also say that my doctors have pooh-poohed these results, but I firmly believe that what we eat, really effects how we feel. I just never knew how much!

I'm shocked that so many reviewers raved. First of all, the calorie count was too low for me. I was very hungry. Personally, I believe when you get used to being very hungry, or you get used to quite a bit less food, it is a sign that your metabolism is slowing down. I've had the pendulum swing too often to go through that again. Secondly, I found the last repetitions of the exercises such unpleasant experiences that I dreaded working out as time went on, whereas in the past I would get happier about working out the farther into a program I went. Third, it is very rare to find a body builder, and they are the experts at shedding fat, who doesn't believe that aerobics should be included in training, or who recommends Superslow. Schwarzenegger even reported (long ago) that he and a training buddy tried slow reps and abandoned the technique because it was not getting them the results they were used to. Fourth, I resent that the cover model was a woman who didn't need to lose any body fat. In fact, she didn't have to follow the eating plan at all. Lastly, even though there is in the reviews an example of someone who kept the weight off, I really wonder how the majority of people do after this cycle. It doesn't seem to teach realistic life skills. It certainly is not a health benefit to limit your foods to such narrow choices. Modern hunter gatherers (who most likely eat more like early humans, whom we mostly likely resemble in metabolism) often eat nearly a hundred fruits and vegetables with vastly more natural fiber that you could get in this regime. In additon, my endurance in dance classes did not increase nearly as much as when I switched to weight training plus jogging with intervals of rope jumping. However, it's nnot a terrible book, and if you can take the low calorie count, it is better than programs that don't have a good exercise component. But don't beat yourself up if you hate it. You can always try it again later (if ever) when you more ready for the severity. Or do something that takes the weight off more enjoyably even if it is slower.

Book is great...personal experience

This book be da bomb. I know the girl on the cover and she still looks like that, and that picture was taken in 1992 before she tried out for a remake of FAME at the local hipadrome. I know this because that is my main man holmes baby's mama. For real though, she is 35 has 3 kids and still looks like dat. She ocassinally does the diet in the book and ocassinonally smashes down a couple big mac's from our local McD's and washes it down with a jumbo slurpee but still is a pretty hot mama. I guess I got a little off track, but I'm trying to hollar at yall and let you know that this diet does work. Give it a try and you too will be looking like my man holmes baby mama shell-dawg.

It worked for me!

I too came upon this book while looking for something on weight training. The before and after pictures got my attention as well as the uphill trendline for female weight gain over time. I like being able to exercise effectively in the privacy and convenience of my home. The weight lifting is immediately rewarding as each session brings improvements. After three weeks of exercise and diet, the weight loss and inches lost becomes dramatic. I lost 13 pounds and many inches in six weeks. His diet recommendations are not very practical for someone cooking for a family; I modified the diet recommendations using other resources to maintain a 1200 calorie/day low fat diet. After the initial six weeks I have maintained the weight loss by lifting weights 2-3 times a week. This book appears to be a dumbed down version of the men's book, Living Longer Stronger, which my husband uses, in that it offers far less theory but I wouldn't call that a major drawback. The bottom line is that the program works. I have recommended it to at least 8 others.

It's a good book, but...

It is a good program and I'm sure it does work as advertised, however there are some drawbacks. First, some of us can't use it. For instance, as a nursing mother I can't superhydrate until after I'm done nursing, nor can I cut my calories as drastically as advocated without jeapordizing my milk supply (I realize this is a temporary problem). My other major difficulty is that it is a 6 week program, and doesn't really provide much information or helpful advice on what to do when you're not following the program. Frankly I'm more interested in what I weigh a year from now, than what I weigh 6 weeks from now.

With those quibbles aside though, it's otherwise an excellent book and program.

I struggled with my weight especially after having a child 16 years ago. I am a registered dietitian so that made it even more humiliating--knowing what I should be doing, but not being able to do it. I picked up an earlier edition of this book 13 years ago and it changed my life. I walked 6 days a week religiously. I felt the diet was very easy to follow and loved some of the recipes in the book. After 3 years and 40 pounds later, I started running and have been running ever since. Thank you Choose to Lose for transforming my life. I love who I have become.

I read this books years ago, and when I found out the book was revised I had to have it. This book teaches you how to make a healthy eatting change for life, or just to lose those unwanted pounds. It tells you the importance of why you should not avoid carbohydrates, and it is very easy because you choose what you eat to loose weight, as long as you dont exceed your daily calorie or fat intake per day. It also teaches you why on 1000 caloried diets dont work because your body think it s starving and you dont loose weight because of so few calories. You can also save up for splurges. I think the hardest part in following this diet is eatting more than I am use to, when most diets you hardly eat. If interested in a positive eatting change where you can eat what you want, lose weight, drop your cholesterol level, and make this change for life, this is the book for you, I just love it, and the new me, because of it. Thank you Ron & Nancy Goor M.D. and Katherine Boyd R.D. for writing and sharing this book.

This book provides extremely useful scientific based knowledge regarding general health and specifically skin health as it relates to nutrition. Many references are provided and no "too good to be true" gimmicks are thrown at you. Very refreshing in a time where many books are linked to a money grab of some sort, or false information. I am not completely done the book yet but have already gained much useful information.

Wow! This book throws a lot of data, facts, and clinical trials at you. Some may say it is disorganized. However the feeling I had coming out of reading the book was an unwavering faith in how diet is related to Acne that I previously only suspected. And with that - a new-found conversion, no-TOTAL COMMITMENT to change myself 180 degrees and to beat the pharma and cosmetic industry that feeds off this illness. A strong commitment needs a strong conversion as the seed and this book is the catalyst. Wish I found this sooner. 5 Stars and bravo!

Apparently well-researched, yet confusing.

Basically, this book attempts to confirm most people's suspicions about certain types of food causing acne (ex. milk and cheese). As expected, the book immediately launched into various theories about how milk, dairy, and generally inflammatory foods all can cause acne through hormonal changes, insulin reactions, and sebum modulation. It's all very logically sound in the way it is presented.

The book then goes into foods that prevent acne, mostly centering around those with omega-3 fatty acids. The basis for the argument is omega-3's anti-inflammatory effect.

However, up to this point, it is still information pieced together from various credible sources and made into a sort of "acne theory."

The book then goes into a dietary plan and list of foods for avoiding acne.

To my great dismay and confusion, the book confirmed my worst expectation: this is a general "eat organic, exercise, widen your diet to more exotic food" plan, based on health fads and feelings more than science.

After condemning milk and dairy for half the book, the author then recommends CHEESE as an anti-acne food! He then goes to list all kinds of flavors, with a caveat of "May worsen acne in some people" at the end!

"May worsen acne in some people?" For God's sake, you just spent half the book convincing us that dairy was the Devil's own conspiracy to create acne!

Then, he recommends Olive, Sesame, and Canola oil, all of which are Omega-6 dense, omega-3 scarce oils, which he just spent the last 100 pages trying to convince you were the Devil's second conspiracy!

The rest of the list is made up of common sense fruit and vegetables, with exotic carbohydrates such as hummus and quinoa thrown in for good measure.

Now I agree that avoiding dairy helps avoid acne, and also that eating large amounts of Omega-3 fats provide many health benefits, as did both before I read this book. I'm just disappointed in the consistency of the author.

The recipes at the end are great templates to make exotic meals one might not normally think of, but are just generally healthy foods, not some kind of special anti-acne food concoction. In fact, many of them use milk and omega-6 dense fats!

If one is a complete novice to health issues, I would recommend this book, however most people who have spent some time researching on the internet will not find anything new, and may actually find contradictory information.

Perhaps a version 2 is in order?

I have to applaud Dr. Logan for this wonderful book. I'm normally not that interested in the science and don't really care for biology that much but this book presents the findings and studies in such a straightforward, concise and clear way. After reading this book, it is hard to debunk that diet somehow affects a person's proneness to acne.

This is something that anyone with some skin problem should read. Although it is a non-fiction, this book is not boring at all. It presents a wealth of relevant information throughout the book and is well worth the money.

What I liked best about Communicating with Today's Patient: The practical suggestions that can be used often and right away. For example, when broaching a difficult subject, ask "What has been your experience with (topic)?" This gives you a reading on the patient's perspective and prevents incorrect assumptions. Dozens of techniques like this make the reader a better communicator right away. Two thumbs up!

Many doctors take their communication skills for granted, but the sad fact remains that most of us do not do a good job talking to our patients. Learning how to improve your bedside manner is extremely difficult to do, but this book shows you how you can do so. Reading this book is likely to be one of the best investments of your time you can make - and it's full of practically useful stuff you can implement immediately !

I'm not a doctor, but I'm often a patient. This book has shown me how to communicate better with my doctor. In fact, I think it has excellent and helpful information for everyone, as we all try to make others understand our desires and comply with them.

This book is terrific. It zeros in on so many of the problems caused by a lack of understanding the needs for proper communication when dealing with people involved in a usually stressful situation. It presents these problems in a simple and direct manner and then shows in common sense language how to solve them. I majored in communication in college and was involved in the health care industry for over 30 years. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone involved in that industry or in a position where dealing with people is a priority.

After making another wonderful dinner from this book tonight, I decided that I should write my impression of the recipes. I have a lot of raw uncook books, so I am familiar with many recipes and food preparation techniques. These authors seem to have perfected the ingredients for soups and breads, and they really understand the concept of taste. I first made the Sweet Vanilla-Almond Dip - so simple but so yummy! I love it with apple. Then I made two salad dressings, the Tahini Dressing and the Fantastic Flax Dressing - both perfect and delightful! I made the Blueberry-Vanilla Macadamia Nut Granola and it is quite good. Then tonight I had for dinner the Carrot Ginger Soup with a sandwich made with the Foccacia. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to try raw cuisine, and I intend to keep exploring more recipes!

This is an excellent book! When I bought the book, I was hoping to be educated on how I could adopt more raw food into my diet. I did not expect to thoroughly enjoy reading the book. The book comprehensively covers the ins and outs of a raw food diet in a very clear and interesting way. I strongly recommend it.
