This book provides a fun and easy way to bake love and nutrition into your dog's diet. My wife works as a pet advisor through www.letspawty.com and recommends this book to her clients. It allows people to save money on treats by making their own and dog owners get the all-important advantage of knowing what is going into their dog's treats. Natural, no preservatives, no chemicals. The treats are extremely easy to make and take just minutes. Comes with a bone-shaped cookie cutter. Pawsitively delicious!

Great gift-giving book for the pooch lover in your life!

I do taste test the treats, and wow, very edible and delicious. Any dog would be so lucky to have a human in their life with this book!

Although "The Doggy Bone Cookbook" is small, it is jam-packed with quick, easy to make recipes for natural dog biscuits that are sure to please even the most fussiest canine palettes! It even comes with a cute plastic doggy bone cookie cutter. I have already made four surefire hits from this book - Cinnabone, Pea-mutt Butter, Garlicky and Cheese, and Bark-B-Que, and my one-year-old Keeshond gobbles them right up. The ten recipes are easy and quick to assemble (making them quite appropriate for children to make!) and require minimal healthy ingredients for maximum taste. The book also includes helpful tips such as how to cook the biscuits to just the right consistency (something I had had problems with in the past). If you enjoying cooking, and care about feeding your dog foods and treats that contain natural ingredients (with no chemicals, food dyes or preservants), then this book is perfect for you!

I really enjoy making the recipes in this book and my dog really enjoys eating them (as do the dogs in his obedience class). I have only two issues with the book. First, I don't think that the batch sizes were changed from the original book to accomodate the smaller bone cookie cutter size, because I always end up with many more treats than it says I should have (not that my dog is complaining). Also, there are no recipes for dogs who have corn and wheat allergies as all call for either corn or wheat flour although I'm sure with a little work you could substitute oat or rice flour. All in all a fun and creative book!

This book is truly informative and helpful. Reading it has empowered me to take steps to be able to live with the frighteneing diagnosis of heart failure. The suggestions given are practical and helpful. By reading the book, I was able to find support groups on line--most helpful. I heartily (pun intended!) recommend it for anyone who has been diagnosed with heart failure.

I bought this for my wife who has postpartum cardiomyopathy so we could really understand what the cardiologist was saying and doing. Prior to reading it we had been concerned that our cardiologist wasn't engaging us in many "standard" heart failure treatments that we had researched which might improve her daily quality of life. This book really helped my wife and I understand all the CHF jargon and, most importantly, what the heart meds do and how they are supposed to work in the body. Because of this book and other research we have engaged another cardiologist for a second opinion and learned that there are indeed other treatments and therapies available to us. Net Net - this book helps you engage in knowledgeable conversations with your doctor which is key to your survival and successful treatment.
4 stars only because I wish the author had expounded more on some of the topics.

Adults who are new to yoga can learn a lot from this book, regarding the principles and philosophies of yogs. This is a very well-rounded resource. My daughter is only three so she cannot do everything yet, but there is still plenty. I'm glad that she will be able to grow into this book and continue to find new things within it. I particularly like the charts in the back of the text that suggest music and picture books or poems that complement the poses. This is simply THE BEST yoga book for adults and kids to use together.

Also, the colorful design and photography are fantastic! this book should be in every parent's library. Kids today definitely need to move and stretch more, and this book is a book way to start. I edited a book that combines yoga-like poses with brain development activities. Please take a look at it, too! Power Brain Kids

Beth Witrogen McLeod's book Caregiving The Spiritual Journey of Love, Loss, and Renewal is a must read for any person taking care of an ill loved one, whether they are a child, spouse and/or aging parent. My interview with Beth revealed a strong woman with a fierce detrmination to help other caregivers make the most of a very painful situation. Beth includes her own personal journey along with the stories of hundreds of people she has met online in her chat groups or in person during her many public appearances in her incredible book. As the creator and editor of HotFlash! a woman's online perimenopause/menopause magazine and online support group, I have found women in the same place as Beth. She has described so well in her book the guilt, the pain, the sorrow and yes, at times, the joy of taking care of a sick loved one. In attempting to find hope and love in a truly difficult situation, Beth guides us to make good decisions not only for the person needing care but for the person herself. She pulls back the curtain on this often overlooked yet important topic.

This is a must read for anyone taking care of a loved one and for the rest of us who will one day be in these extraordinary shoes.

In an ideal world, we'd all have parents who we would want to help in old age, and it would be our honor to help them in their old age as they have helped us in our youth.

However, for the children of substance abuse parents and/or mentally ill patients the answers do not come easy. Things are much more complicated than simply finding a place to live, and deciding how much time you can spend with said loved one.

I'm not trying to over simplify, because all decisions dealing with older loved ones are difficult, but I was kind of hoping it would have given me more direction as to when its important to protect yourself as well. Its easy to get caught up in the caretaker role, feeling like a matyr without thinking about wheither or not this is the best desicion for you and your immediate family. Especially, if its puts you at risk for other health issues.

Review Date: 2008-12-19
READ THIS BOOK! Since the first Diet for a Small Planet came out in the 1970's, I've had a profound change in my thinking about planetary health. I read once about how much the bio-waste of dinosaurs affected the atmosphere of the early planet- decaying flesh, methane emissions, pushing the planet into global warming. Frances Moore Lappe informed me that not only is the methane associated with our meat industry a problem, the interrelated costs to the environment of the feed industry- nitrogen, fuel emissions, methane, etc- are enough to tip the scale to disaster by themselves. I just read a story- just this second- 12/17/08- on the Discovery Channel website, about the meat industry nitrogen effluent (7 million tons per year) causing a dead zone presently the size of Massachussetts in the water of the Gulf of Mexico, and it is expected that without help, it will eventually kill the Gulf like the Dead Sea. Well, Ms. Lappe has been talking about this stuff for thirty years. I used to think she was a shrill Chicken Little. No more. There are too many people for us to blindly do what ever we please. As a group, we've got to institute controls. READ THIS BOOK!

This is a very interesting book. It features in one part a detailed description of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank, who used microloans to help Bangladeshis, especially women, get out of poverty and earn for themselves. By issuing very small loans, the people of Bangladesh are able to build their businesses or working conditions and change their lives. I recommend this book.

I won't say much here, because the other reviewers have described the book well. All I will say is that this is one of the very best books I have ever read. Not only does Lappe have an incredible way with words, but she summarizes her profound insights in such a way that really organizes one's thoughts for genuine reflection. Add to that a well-documented and researched approach, as well as fascinating stories of different communities around the world which they themselves visited.

Review Date: 2006-08-16
Thirty years after the publication of the highly acclaimed "Diet For A Small Planet", Frances and her daughter Anna Lappe have come out with a potent sequel and a beautiful statement of hope for a more equitable world through the world-wide spread of organic and sustainable agriculture techniques and locally controlled "fair" market modalities now challenging the status quo of chemical fed, toxic pesticide/GMO laden crops, and the lopsided "free" market capitalist WTO agenda that has been reaping havoc on the environment and small farmers everywhere.

The Lappes traveled to 5 continents while researching this book and their travels are both fascinating and uplifting as they report on people all over the world demonstrating that going organic and controlling their own markets are reaping major benefits in healthy, abundant food production while cleaning up the environment.

The Lappes do not reject world trade or capitalism, rather, they demonstrate how unregulated "free" markets monopolized by huge international corporations have been inadvertently causing food scarcity, bankrupting and polluting people all over the world, yet with an injection of regulation in the form ethics, strict fair trade measures, etc., they believe capitalism can "evolve" to a more sustainable, equitable, and healthy method of food distribution- a similar optimistic view shared by Lovins and Hawken in their book, "Natural Capitalism".

The inefficiencies of nutrient and food distribution is brought home in quantifying the huge amount of crops, water, and land required to feed cattle. The amount of energy necessary to produce an ounce of meat could feed hundreds of people on a much healthier vegetarian diet, hence, the myth of food scarcity and the need to grow more food to feed the world.

Every chapter finishes with a recipe and there are many more at the end of the book along with several pages of resources and contact information on a host of organizations advocating social responsibility.

I can't praise the author of this book highly enough. He has created a comprehensive, readable and thoroughly engaging reference including almost every drug found in society today. The bulleted notes found at the beginning of every chapter were some of the most helpful I have found; indicating risk factors, addiction potential, chemical makeup and street names. Antic dotes keep the subject matter fun and well-cited scientific facts lend credibility to the oft surprising statements. I wish the author had included a more extensive section on legal substances like alcohol, but it's a small issue in the face of all the other information included. A must read for anyone interested in drug culture or for parents seeking an informed point of view on the subject.

Paul Gahlinger does an excellent job of finding "all" of the 178 or whatever number he says is the number of illegal drugs in (I guess) America. He readily admits that the war on drugs is not working, but then compliments the DEA on its extreme efforts to curve the war on them. This is a rather old subject of thought that has been updated time and time again. He is an MD from Utah, so remember that as you read. On many of the issues he raises he is correct, but on several he not. For example, he states that caffeine (on page 180) is "highly addictive, creating both physical and phychological dependence after as little as 100mg a day." Now, if that were true, most of my friends and I would be in the ER every other day!! Goodness. This is totally false and he knows it. Also in the book he includes the deaths of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe to get his point across that almost everything except water is not good for you-- or can be addicting. His data at times is two sentences, and his sources are questionable, because they are not listed. I must admit he covers just about any, and I do mean any substance that could used to make something illegal. But Dr. Gahlinger is missing the point. We also have outlawed murder, but it still happens. There are laws against theft, but people steal. I had a student tell me he gets stoned sniffing gasoline, so does the author want to outlaw gasoline also? The US laws are full of these draconian statutes which give the government unlimited power of seizure already. One legislator in congress said recently the US cannot afford to win the war on drugs because it has become too lucrative for the DEA and other governmental agencies. The author says knowledge is the only way to win the war on drugs..haven't we done DARE for 15 years now? It does NOT work. This is a very good text on the history of illegal drug use, but is a little weak on the pharmaceutical aspects or dynamics of how medications become addictive to human beings. Can anyone say the drug problems of the 70s are any better now, almost 40 years later? I do question some of his numbers and science, but as far as covering a subject matter, this is a fine addition to anyone's library. Just double check the numbers before using it as a reference. guyairey

I purchased this book on the last day of Radiant Health Yoga Teacher Training. I had heard about it months previously and knew that at some point I would read it. I thought it was very "appropriate " that I came across this book on the last day of training. The reason is that Lilias Folan was the first yoga teacher I was ever exposed to back in the seventies via her PBS television program. So here I am almost 30 years later, my last day of classroom teacher training and I find her book, not in a conventional bookstore but in a gift and candy store. There she was, looking up and smiling at me from the front cover in her purple long sleeved shirt and black pants, arms out stretched lovingly with her palms open. No accident.

This book gently introduces yoga to an aging population (Lilias and I are both a part of that population now) in typical Lilias fashion.

Not only does this book discuss asana (and adaptations) but also much of the book is dedicated to meditation, pranayama, the koshas, as well as a little information regarding the Yamas and the Niyams and the stage of life that people our age (Lilias and me) are in now. It is wonderfully written to this age group.

This is a beautiful book and I will use it both as a reference and an inspiration for many years to come.

She communicates the philosophy and practice through her own experiences so that it is not intimidating and easy to understand for a yogi at any level. As an educator I found this personally helpful and bough a copy for our food service manager. It also gave us more information for parents who have complained about our ban on ALL junk foods including those with high sugar content.

I read Dr. Kathleen DesMaison's "Your Last Diet" and followed her program for about 9 months. It changed my life! I lost 30 pounds and I feel so much better, physically and emotionally. I have more energy, self-confidence, inner peace and zest for life. I was well on my way to healing my sugar addiction and was ready to help my children.

Then, I read "Little Sugar Addicts" to help my children. "Little Sugar Addicts" helped me guide my family through the process of healing their sugar addiction. It had everything we needed: easy to follow step-by-step instructions, recipes, ideas for the holidays and inspiring stories from other parents. The transformation of my children was amazing. What's more, Kathleen's program is a lifestyle change, not a quick fix or a bunch of other things to buy. It is economical, simple and it works. Our family has been healed by this book and I highly recommend it.

This book will answer so many questions parent have!

Kathleen DesMaisons first book, Potatoes Not Prozac, changed my life. I went from a completely depressed person well on my way to taking anti-depressants, to a happy, confident person who loves life--all because I changed the way I ate! Since healing my own body and mind I have changed my children's diets with miraculous results.

Before Kathleen's program my kids would whine, scream, hit, be totally out of control, throw tantrums and in general, I didn't like them very much a lot of the time. I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong?!? How could I feel this way about my kids and what could I do about it? No amount of parenting advice or classes could change what was going on with them. Well, after getting myself steady on Kathleen's program I started to look at my kids diet. It took a little time and adjustment, but now by feeding them differently and at consistant times they are mostly fun, loving, compassionate, focused, easy to talk to and the joys I always knew they were. Food was the answer, pure and simple!

Get this book if you've ever had those feelings of helplessness with your kids. It will change your life and your families life!

Little Sugar Addicts is a great book!
