This book taught me so much. It's not one big thing you can do to be fabulous, its a bunch of small things. I really enjoyed it and how it covered may different subjects. It's not the same old stuff like chew with your mouth closed. It goes into so many subjects and issues. I recommend this to ANY woman, no matter what age. It's also a guide you can briefly scan over before going somewhere. Highly recommended!

Much better than "Skinny Bitch"!

Despite being paired with "Skinny Bitch" on the Amazon site, this book is much nicer in tone and much more helpful. It's fun and entertaining to read, in addition to offering advice that's hard to come by but very effective!

OK, maybe the part about keeping one's, er, nether-regions trim wasn't written with me in mind (at least directly), but: Esther Blum's common-sense approaches to diet & exercise are just as effective for us fellas as they are for the ladies. Equally important: They are a breath of fresh air in this self-starvation, spin-till-you-pass-out compulsive world. Esther has rescued "Happy" and returned it to its rightful place alongside "Healthy". The infectious mirth of her writing style makes this as enjoyable a read as it is informative. Brava, Esther!

I have read many books on the subject of diets and dieting and I have to say this book was by far the best. It is written in an informal and personal yet intelligent way. I believe there isn't a dieter/former dieter out there who couldn't relate to Linda's story and all the thoughts, feelings and emotions behind chronic dieting. If your tired of struggling with food and diets, or if you feel like you just don't know what to do next... then How to Survive Your Diet and Conquer Your Food Issues Forever is a great choice.

Nothing special here...

I don't know what exactly I was expecting from this book, but I didn't get it.

I certainly wasn't expecting a magic fix-it, but was hoping for something new. There is nothing new here.

The author's groundbreaking discoveries include:
-The reason people gain weight are from greed eating and stress eating.
-The way to lose weight and keep it off is to learn portion control.

Why this information was life-changing to some people, I'll never understand. The only reason I gave this book 2 stars instead of 1 is that she summarizes and compares many diet plans. So basically, others have done the work for her and she's just compiled it.

I'm happy Mrs. Moran found a way to lose and keep off her weight- a whopping 22 lbs.

Yes, her high weight was 142 at 5'2, and she is now 120. Good for her. Yes, 142 is a bit heavy for a woman of her stature, but I wonder how many women with serious weight problems will buy her book expecting to read about someone who actually had the kind of weight problem they do, only to be told in the last chapter that this is not true. Again, I am happy she is at a healthy weight, I just feel that this book had practically nothing to offer the targeted audience, or anyone else for that matter.

So Simple...Now Just Do It!

Linda Moran's suggested "self talk" is so simple and works when you do it (yes...this is the catch...you have to actually DO IT!).

Before eating, one of the things Moran suggests you ask yourself is "Am I hungry or am I eating out of "greed?" There are also other examples of self talk that deal with stress, guilt, etc.

Eating intuitively worked for me up until the holidays (Yes...I've been greedy!).

I do feel that mastering the self talk as prescribed by Moran can be a key to losing weight and keeping it off--I will attempt to refocus and see where her guidance takes me!

This is one of the most clear and concise presentations of intuitive eating I have come across so far. The author shares her experience and insights with regard to re-establishing a normal relationship with food. It's clear that she understands the whole dieting mindset/lifestyle that many of us have experienced, with multiple cyles of on-again, off-again, self-blame, looking for that magic pill, etc. In this book she offers a way to become free of obsession with food and actually just live a life.

i read the book in one day and think it is amazing how many books you can read on the same issue and still always find something you haven't read before. Amazing.
I liked Linda's book, it is very easy to read and Linda is very down to earth about the whole issue.

This book provides great resources to live a better lifestyle. I love the way Jeremy documents his accomplishments and failures. He proves that one should not give up on their dreams but rather set goals so they can achieve their dreams.

Jeremy's book is separated into three parts: Mind set, Nutrition, Exercise. The mind set is a motivational section that describes what tools a person needs to achieve their goals. This was my favorite section of the entire book!

The next section is the Nutrition section. In this section Jeremy talks about what foods to consider eating. This section does not contain a diet plan rather Jeremy attempts to educate the readers about the properties of the different food groups. This section contains great information and gives the reader an idea of what foods are made of thus allowing the reader to decide for themselves what foods are good and what foods are bad.

The final section of this book talks about exercise. Jeremy describes some exercises and explains some different ways to do them. This is a great section if you are not familiar with weight lifting. Some of the exercises Jeremy describes are the Squat, Dead Lift, and Bench Press.

This really is an amazing book. I don't contain the words to do this book any justice. BUY THIS BOOK!

It has been said that the way to make money quickly in the book industry is self-help or weight loss fitness books. This book does not really fall into that category. It is written with a passion for a subject and based on personal experience and transformation. There are a number of factors that make this an exceptional book, and even more so an extraordinary fitness book. First is the way it is written - each chapter is written in two parts. It begins with the meat of the matter, the teaching about, health, fitness, wellness ... the second part of each chapter is the personal narrative of Jeremy's journey from being unhealthy to healthy. Mr. Likeness gives numerous examples from his own fitness journey and some from those he has helped to move along that path. In the same way that Sylvester Stallone did in his book Sly Moves : My Proven Program to Lose Weight, Build Strength, Gain Will Power, and Live your Dream.

This book is in part written around the philosophy from the book Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength by Bill Phillips, yet it goes into much greater depth on some of the non-physical factors of health and weight loss or weight management. It deals with issues of stress, family life and work factors that can either help or hinder the physical transformation a person desires to make. This book has a very holistic approach to health and fitness. It presents the argument that in order to make lasting changes in your life, those changes must begin from the inside; transformation starts in the heart and in the mind and then works out in the body. Jeremy states: "Physique transformation is about more than simply losing weight. You will find that your life changes in many ways, too. You adjust to new clothing, a new image in the mirror, even a new sense of energy that allows you to achieve more during the day. Spiritually and mentally, you may change as well. Although these changes are almost always positive, change itself can be something that we fear. For this reason, it is important to understand what changes to expect to better prepare yourself as the process unfolds." Once the physical changes start to become more evident, you will have both positive and negative comments from people in your life. Likeness helps to provide some tools for dealing with both types. An example he gives is that if you have been over weight for a long time, you might not be accustomed to compliments - you will have to learn how to receive them and take some of them to heart.

This book, as the techniques in it are applied, can be a great tool for helping a person achieve greater health and wellbeing. This can be a factor in a longer and happier life. If these goals are things you have been thinking about, or have started working on, pick up this book to help boost your resolve and efforts to make your lifestyle changes.

I have been an RN for 35 years and haven't felt really well for the past 20 years. I sought the advice of a multitude of physicians and specialists only to finally somehow be lead to an integrative physician, who happens to be a LLMD, who took the time to read my history, look at past test results and listen to the many strange and everchanging multi-system problems I have had. He then ordered proper testing. I have late stage Lyme Disease.

As an RN I know only too well the closed mindedness of the mainstream medical profession. I was labeled a "difficult" patient because I questioned and chose to disagree with the assessment that my illness was emotionally based.

This book reinforces my decision to use mostly alternative methods on the recommendation of my LLMD and also reinforces the fact that antibiotics are usually necessary.
The anti inflammatory diet does really help to lessen the pain this disease can cause. When you follow it and feel much better the "sacrifice" of giving up sugars, sweets, caffeine, etc is really worth the effort.

The book doesn't read like a death sentence and made me feel that I have some control over how this disease progresses.

The Lyme Disease Solution Singleton has an ability to breakdown complex pieces of information into understandable parts, bringing together his experience as a lyme patient with medical and wholistic understandings. He includes the reactions to be expected with particular courses of antibiotic treatment, supplements to support healing, and a four stage diet plan. Helpful for both lyme patients and their caregivers.

If I were to recommend a single book with all of the informtion one would need to know about Lyme disease and related co-infections, this would be it. It is hands down the most concise yet comprehensive reference out there for lyme patients today. Dr. Singleton's book is beautifully written, informative, and infused with such a positive and caring tone, that my family and I find reading it to be as emotionally uplifting as it is medically therapeutic in its treatment suggestions. I am especially impressed by his willingness to utilize the best of both traditional and integrative medicine, always offered in combination with plenty of practical common sense. In addition, Dr. Singleton addresses other, more commonly overlooked aspects of this illness, including the emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs of a patient suffering from what can be a very debilitating disease. Every practicing physician treating lyme disease today could also benefit greatly from this book.

Delicious - My favorite cookbook!

Review Date: 2008-10-25
As someone who loves to cook, but doesn't have a ton of cooking skills or time, I found this book to be extremely easy to follow and fast. Most of the time put into these recipes is in washing and cutting produce. Every recipe I've tried has been delicious, with a huge range of flavors for every palate: Sesame Ginger Asparagus, Greek Style Scallops, Stuffed Peppers with Feta and Pine Nuts, Brazilian Style Seafood Stew, Quinoa with toasted pecans, fresh thyme, and dried apricots and cranberries, Yummy frittatas, Stirfrys, recipes for chicken, pork, lamb, beef ... Desserts and breads like, Gingerbread or Raspberry & Nectarine Cobbler & so much more.

I love just thumbing through this book just to gather more nutritional tidbits of information, and get inspired for the next meal. The pictures are enough to get to motivated. I also might add that I LOVE that this is a healthy cookbook, but there is nothing "diet" about it: they use butter, cheese, coconut milk, sauces, healthy oils and seeds and nuts, just in proper portions. And it's all about variety of flavors, textures, colors and the foods you regularly eat.

For anyone wanting to add delicious and good for you food to their plates BUY THIS BOOK! I'm buying a bunch of copies as gifts!

I got this book based on the positive community reviews I read and I was not disappointed. There are so many recipes in this book that I want to make. The Chunky Tomato-Vegetable Sauce on page 109 was absolutely yummy! It is now my husband's favorite pasta sauce! I thoroughly enjoyed the Vegetable Chili recipe on page 185. And everyone loved the Shrimp Curry with Asparagus and Snap Peas on page 94. In addition to the great recipes, the book has great informational sections on recommended portion sizes for the average adult (which is really important re-learning that I have had to do) as well as really important background data behind the science of the diet recommendations (look for this in the back starting on page 286). This is now my favorite cookbook and the first cookbook I consult when I am looking for ideas for what to make for dinner! I have enthusiastically recommended this book to both family members and friends!

my new fave ... great even for a vegan diet

I'm on Day 6 of a 30-day vegan challenge (just diet, not lifestyle). I just got this book last week and the timing was perfect. It has dozens of gourmet-tasting but easy recipes that are either vegan or easily converted--vegetable recipes, soups, salads, grains, and even some desserts.

Most of the recipes focus on plant foods (which is the whole point of "the new American plate"). The grains recipes often rely on intact grains, which I prefer over flours. The recipes are pretty simple but contain yummy combos I would never have done on my own, like quinoa with peas and sage, or roasted parsnips with sweet potatoes and apples.

The book has a nice layout, a thorough index, and photography that makes me drool (yes, over vegetables). I just wish I could find more books exactly like this one. I'd give it more stars if I could.

It amazes me that the best healthy eating cookbook is also the best cookbook for modern American cuisine. My fiance bought this book about a year ago and I am consistently impressed by the variety and taste of the food contained within (it also helps that she is wonderful). My personal favorite: the couscous with raisin, apricot and ground beef.

I've read about 75% of the book and I am fascinated. This book explains wonderfully how movement is a part of posture. The explorations make you tune into your own body and the exercises are simply yet effective. I appreciate how she describes how and why posture affects the way our bodies feel and offers ways to be able to use our bodies in an efficient way. She definately proves that "no pain no gain" is not necessary and how little changes to every day life can make a great improvement in one's life. As a massage therapist, i've become more in tuned with body mechanics and this book is an EXCELLENT resource.

I've lost 38 lbs. since I started this diet about a year ago. I hope to lose about 50 more. For years I tried execise and diets to lose but nothing helped me lose much. Because of the info. these authors revealed, I finally am doing what seemed impossible. Two tips help me. I eat a lot of vegetables at my first meal of the day. That way I'm full enough for the remainder of the day that I can keep my second tip. That tip is that I only consume 1400 calories per day. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this book!

I do not understand...I thought when you go on an anti-depressant it was suppose to help balance your unbalanced hormones and chemicals? I thought it was suppose to give us more serotonin, not less?? I was first put on an antidepressant when a doctor told me it would help give me energy (I was not depressed, I had a long battle with mono and still had fevers and fatigue). I gained about 60 pounds, did not get any energy, felt "odd", not quite myself. It was not fun. Eventually went off the pills for a few years. Then started having anxiety and not feeling very good (blood work showed my hormones were really unbalanced, had me in "post-menopausal" in some areas, even though I was only 30 yrs. old and still menstruating, but just my hormones in general seemed all out of whack),so I was put back on another antidepressant. I thought these meds were suppose to help us feel better, more calm, less stressed, sleep better, put us in balance, etc. Why do they seem to do little other than cause major weight gain? I am considering buying this book. If you follow the diet, does it help you more than antidepressants? Anyone gone off their antidepressants after following the diet for a while? (I'm not talking about those with bi-polar and major depression for whom the meds have truly helped and been benefical, but for anyone who has had doctors pop them on antidepressants when you weren't really depressed?).

Binge Be Gone!

I ran across the Serotonin Diet recently in a magazine article. The magazine gave a Cliff's Note version of the "pure carb" snacking concept. I at first dismissed this concept, me being a Low Carb convert. But, I have always struggled with binge eating. Even after losing 60# recently (low carb dieting) I was still not in control. Although I have maintained my weight loss it is a constant binge then diet cycle. I live in constant fear that I will lose the battle. I read this article on the second day of a 2-day binge. The next day I was resolved to be good on my diet to recover from the bingeing I had been doing. In the afternoon (my binges always hit in the afternoon and/or evenings) I could feel a binge coming on (uncontrollable urge to go get something "bad" out of the work vending machine). I remembered the article I had read and instead I bought a bag of Rold gold pretzels and ate those. I was astounded at how it filled me up and took the binge urge away - nothing has ever worked like this before in my life!! Absolutely amazing. The following day I again had the binge urge and again I bought the pretzels and again another binge was averted. It seems as though it takes time for these urges to go away (maybe they never do) but I now have a tool for fighting back other then willpower (which has never worked on binge urges)

I have just ordered the book and hope to learn more about how to make this a lifestyle and never have to worry about binging again.

It works!

First checked this book out at the library but needed to return it and so I bought it. This has been the best plan I have tried. Many plans claim that you are not hungry, I wouldn't need a plan if I only ate when I was hungry, with this plan I don't crave sweets. This is a huge change for someone who planned meals dessert first. I have made desserts for 3 parties to serve to others and haven't even taken a bite and not even had an interst in doing so.

I over look all the evolution and cave man type information but the other information makes sense. So far I have lost inches and weight. I recommend this book.

And I LOVE Dr. Lydon's emphasis on the fact that this isn't about going on a diet--it really is about changing your life through simple changes in your current habits. This is the only way to achieve a permanent lifelong solution to your weight and health issues. The best part is she understands the importance of eating like our early ancestors making sure we get adequate protein in our diet to aid muscle growth which leads to the burning of stored fat and she articulates beautifully why consuming fat will have a "slimming effect" that most people have no idea about because they are scared witless about eating any. Unfortunately, when it comes to carbs she's not quite on the same page as most low-carbers are and describes a low-carb ketogenic diet as "a recipe for disaster." That's too bad, but you might be interested in reading this book to see her reasons WHY she believes that as an intellectual exercise in challenging what you believe. Although she wasn't very flattering towards low-carb diets, Dr. Lydon does show how you can give your body a good workout without lifting a single weight or going to the gym (using your own body weight instead). It's not a bad book overall, so you might want to check it out.

Highly Recommend! A Life Changer

I HIGHLY recommend this book! It was a life changer for me. Thanks to the food plan, I no longer suffer from extreme carb cravings, brain fog, or being extremely cold all the time. Those symptoms are gone! It also is great for my IBS. Not to mention, the amount of energy I have is through the roof. Hallelujah!!!! Notice I said food plan? Dr. Lydon walks you through a diet where you eliminate certain foods at the beginning and slowly add food groups back in over a period of 6 weeks checking for adverse reactions to foods along the way. Each phase is nutritionally complete. I already knew I was allergic to gluten, but also found I'm reactive to soy and cow milk. Now I'm eating foods that benefit my body rather than causing low levels of inflammation. The crazy thing is I don't crave the foods I've eliminated. I can now walk into the kitchen anticipating a delicious meal where I'll feel satisfied rather than dreading I'll blow my diet by eating too much or munching on sweets.
The exercise routine hits all body parts and my muscles have developed faster on this program than any other I've tried plus it very fast and great for people who have little time. Dr. Lydon clearly explains why long term cardio workouts and carb/calorie restrictions (i.e. carb deficit) do not work and can actually set your body up to become fatter. She explains the myths surrounding calorie burning (how our bodies handle protein, fat, carbs differently and how it adjusts to exercise) and why your body can handle 1 cup of nuts per day and still loose inches. She bases everything on scientific studies, which are quoted so you can read them for yourself. I greatly appreciated her friendly writing style and felt her explanations were clear and concise for the average lay person. The appendices in the book summarize the exercise/food/supplements for each week. The food selection is huge plus it is so simple to do. You do not have to measure, count calories, points, etc. It is very liberating!
Dr. Lydon also started a forum (same name as the book), so people can ask questions and share results/experiences or any problems their encountering. There is also a recipe section and many members of the forum are food geniuses!
Oh, and best of all? You will loose inches and reshape your body. I certainly did! For motivation, just read the success stories on her website. Good luck to you!

I agree with the reviewers who say that this is a fantastic program. However, I'd like to point out that the time for meal preparation on this plan isn't any different than "normal" meal preparation unless you get every one of your meals through a drive through (and even then, you need to consider the time it takes to get there and sit in line). I've actually found bringing meals to work takes no more time than before I started the plan. Before starting this plan--breakfast bar, soup/microwave entrée, munchies. On the plan--boiled eggs, fruit, veggies, can of tuna/left-over chicken breast, salad dressing. It takes the same amount of time to shop, prep, stuff it in a bag, and get out the door. I boil eggs in a big batch, peel them, and grab them as needed for breakfasts and salads. I cook extra protein at dinner and bring it for lunch. I've also noticed many stores in my area sell boiled, peeled eggs and cooked, sliced chicken breasts. How convenient is that? How hard is it to swap a candy bar for an apple?

The first week of the exercise routine was difficult. Someone who is out of shape will not find this "easy," but the exercises are do-able, and being able to go from 1 push-up to 10, even though it doesn't seem like much to "fit" folks, is motivating. Everyone has to start somewhere, right? :)

If you're looking for a "quick fix," this isn't for you. If you are looking for a plan that will change your life and your relationship with food, get this.

This 6-week program provides 6-weeks of meal plans, 35 recipes, and 20-30 minutes of exercises you can do at home using hand weights. The book includes Dr. Lydon's dietary guidelines and exercises with photos. Her dietary recommendations and the promise that her diet and exercise program will increase your metabolism are supported with scientific explanations. You should be in decent shape to do the exercises, which include weight training and calisthenics that can be done with hand weights.

The diet requires time for meal preparation and does not allow fast food. The diet is not vegetarian. It emphases eating lean protein, fruits, and vegetables. It also suggests reducing dairy and grain-based and high-glycemic carbohydrates. The diet provides recommendations for specific foods, portion sizes, and meal frequency. It consists of 3 meals and 3 snacks per day with each meal including 10-12 oz. clear fluid, a serving of lean protein, and a serving of fruit or vegetable.

I really like this book. It is wonderful guidance. The only thing I don't love about the book is the over the top "spirituality" of it.

The guide to living mindfully is wonderful.
The book really shows how fitness and transformation must take place in all aspects of life.

The workouts, yoga, and meditation guidance is top notch.
But, like I said, it does get a bit cheesy from time to time, so just know that going into it.

Best training book I've read so far

This workout program is well thought out, very balanced, and it works. It's genius to recognize the importance of meditation to making gains at the gym. I had never done yoga before reading this book, and have worked hard to teach myself the moves in this book. I "try" to do yoga three times a week in my office, and I have found Il'g positions to be far more challenging then ones taught in classes around here.

This program works.

All one will need is this book.......

An excellent mind/body wholistic health educator, that not only gets one into to great shape, but also help's one deal with the whole range of emotional issues that accompanies a fitness program. I have found that the techniques learned in this book extends way past the gym, and into every aspect of my day-to-day life. One doesn't need to purchase useless pills, prepared meals, or powders to full-fill the author's well thought out programs and nutritional advice. In fact, one can do most of the book's mind/body exercises on the local walking trail or in one's bedroom, and all the proper foods can be purchased at one's local grocery store.

PS. I've also lost 30 lbs and I'm in better shape now at the age of 36, than I was at the age of 18.

With these used prices, the best deal in fitness.

This a very thorough book. I continue to like it more as time passes. It has detailed instructions for weight training, yoga , and aerobics. Who else will give you a superlative set of istructions for 'downward dog', and soon after do the same for 'overhead squats'?,(usually used as an adjuct to olympic weighlifters' training regimens). Ilg understands that the three systems must each stand alone technically to be done properly, but he also understands the synergy of the three. To paraphrase one of Ilg's thoughts: Yoga gives one the body awareness to improve at weight training, and weight training gives one strength to improve at yoga. This a wonderful insight, and it's this type of thinking that adds up to making this sytem the single best for most fitness seekers. (( It's available from Amazon's 'new & used' sources for quite a low price. )) I only have one complaint: Many of Ilg's promotional photos show him using yoga blocks, but the book uses no blocks .

This book is phenomenal.
I really love Steve's focus on functional strength, as opposed to
strength for strengths sake.
Ilg combines Yoga, Strength, Cardio, Meditation and Nutrition.

The workouts are challenging and extremely effective, they will transform your body (and mind) if you follow through. Steve's encouragements all throughout the book are very helpful/motivating.

it's amazing how analogies have the power to reveal to you the state of your own core beliefs. this book presents high ideas you can chew on and allow to point you toward the underlying reality of this design. walk through the stages of consciousness in this book only to realize that you your Self are what you've been looking for in everything that you've searched for.

this book is full of ancient spiritual wisdom and it is presented in such creative and expansive ways.

really amazing depth of thought and vision!

A Monumental work

When I got the book from Amazon, I was all pumped up to read and finish the book as quickly as possible. I also was determined not to rush thru the pages without understanding everything in depth. But when I reached 200+ pages, I realized that it is such a monumental work and it would take its own course towards completion, however I might try to "drink-it-all-at-once" and whatever be my enthusiasm.

A few days I was able to understand and proceed faster and for many days I was stuck in a single page contemplating the meaning. The truth is that the contents of the book gradually grew on me and any effort on my side was just to aid it. The tons of stories, allegorical statements, profound sayings found in the book have affected me very deep inside that I can only admire it in wonder as to how it all happened inspite of me. Venkatesananda's command over the stuff he's talking about is evident in every word contained in the book.

I can only be thankful for everything that helped me in buying this book.

Vasistha's Yoga, supposedly the third longest book in the world, appears in this concise edition, superbly translated and deflowered, which is to say that it steers clear of Platonic, Aristotelean and Judeo-Christian biases while excising the poetic, Kalidasa-esque sections. As for the work itself, it forces its reader to get practical with his or her view of the spiritual - no "love and light" allowed - while at the same time undermining the solidity of the material. The format is one of stories, within stories within stories, interspersed with Upanishad-like instruction, which makes for a very compelling read. One caveat: a danger to uncritical, spiritual escapists.
