I got this book hoping to read about the science behind grains and how our bodies process them. (I have been trying to eat healthier) This book advocates a lot of junk food surprisingly, and it geared entirely to celiac disease. I was under the impression that it would be good for anyone just thinking about giving up grains, but it was not. I only gave this 2 stars because I didn't like it, if you have celiac disease and do not want to eat a raw food diet, than you would like it more.

This is a vrey helpful book

My husband asked, "Another book about gluten free living. How many do you need"
This should have been the first book I bought. Is is very helpful with lots of detail without getting so technical I get lost. I now have a far better understanding of my disease and how to more successfully live with it.
I especially appreciate the parts intended to help me deal with the depression and feelings of isolation. And, the anger because so many just don't get how difficult it is to live this lifestyle. This diet is very labor and emotionally intensive that there are many times I just want to give up. Even the dietitian to whom I was referred knew less than I.

Read this book if you are especially newly diagnosed. It will help get your through some rough times.

Very Informative!!

I highly recommend this book to anybody looking to live the gluten free lifestyle. It's full of knowledgeable facts from a mother of a child with celiac disease. She knows her stuff!!! I read the book and use it often as a reference to foods I should/shouldn't eat. I also love the symptoms and useful advice about living gluten free. I feel much more knowledgeable about the subject after reading this book! I also love the recipes!! :)

I am not a big fan of diet books, but I decided to give it one more shot. My girl-friend Susan bought me this book about a year ago because she was not happy the way I look in hip-huggers. I had gotten lazy since I met Susan, as I thought I had met the partner for life. I let my appearance go and Susan was about to drop me for my ex-husband. Well, I started working out and following the lifestyle changes. Guess what? Susan is giving me a backrub as I write this, telling me that I have great bod and we should get into the tub.

So far I've read half the book and I'm fascinated at what I have learned. I'm looking forward to applying all the secrets and see the results. This is the motivation I needed to get off the junk and do what's good for me. Now I understand why eating very few calories but most of it being sugar has been making me gain weight. I don't eat fried foods or stuff myself I just eat too much sweets. There are more suggestions in here that I think everyone should know. We'll just see if this book is quackery as I read someone elses review. I'll report back in 30 days with the results!

Never thought I would turn to a diet book until my best friend turned me on to the book after hearing that I had refused to expose my thighs at a local softball tournament. It was 90 degrees and there I was, wearing a pair of sweats, vainly trying to cover-up my saddlebags. It has been about 9 months since then and I feel great and look great if I say so myself.I followed the instructions and worked out to the max.My lifestyle has changed, much to the chagrin of the local ice-cream parlor, which I single-handily supported during the winter months.
Thanks for a fun, easy to read book.

Avoid buying it used. I've bought this book used twice now from different sellers, and in both cases the book was missing the tear-out wall chart on pages 189 through 202. Not all sellers check this, so if you buy it used, know that you risk paying for a book that has missing pages. (And people, if you're going to tear pages out of your books, don't turn around and take them to a used bookseller.)

Joyce's workout is great for busy people. I work two jobs, have two busy children, and do this work out 6 days a week. It takes more then 15 minutes most days but the results are well worth it. I actually weigh 20 pounds more than I did before my first child, but wear the same pant size. You really do lose a dress size in a month. Losing inches is a great goal. I have more energy, strength, and stamina. It is also quite adaptable for traveling and economical. I actually use my son's old daycare mat for the floor exercises!!! I would recommend this for all of us who just can't get to the gym.

Still a Winner

This was the first book I ever bought when I decided to try my hand at free weights at home. I used it for about three years solid, then began working with a personal trainer to really up my workouts. Recently I quit the trainer and have built up my own little home gym, and guess what - I'm back to this same book all these years later. I've found that even though I've got a lot more experience now, and have built up good muscle tone, I can still use this workout because of the advanced options she offers to add-on to each routine. It worked for me as a beginning book and helped me get started on my road to better fitness, and seven years later, it's still helping me stay in shape. I have some of her other books, too, and they are all in heavy rotation in my weekly workout routines. Some of the best books out there for all levels of weight trainers, in my opinion. But this particular one is still the best!

I am 60 years old and had been pretty skinny all my life. I was always very active..horsebackriding, scuba, belly dancing, but after our retirement and move to Florida, I had too much time on my hands (and not enough weights IN them), cooked too much, (ate it all, too), traveled alot with my husband, and pigged out on easily obtainable and horribly fattening "road grub". I finally took a long, hard look in the mirror and was horrified at the fat person staring, equally horrified, back at me. WHO WAS THAT FAT PERSON?? Gasp! ME! We are not too Gymmy here in retirement heaven, so I scoped out a few books online and liked the approach of this one best. My (fabulous)Husband agreed to help me out and for the last 6 weeks, we have been following the diet that Joyce sugests, and I have been doing the Definition Workout, now up to 6, 8, 10 lbs and Dragon Lady Status. The workout is easy to understand and follow. The equipment is inexpensive and easily obtainable. The diet highlights sensible, nutritious food. The upshot is that so far I have lost 11 pounds, one jeans size, and my (faboulous)Husband has lost 10 pounds and gone from a 36 to a 34 inch waist. According to bio, Joyce is only 3 months older than I am, and (next to Cher) she is definitely my ideal "golden ager". I still have a looong way to go, but it is MARVELOUS to feel enabled and in control of my weight and my life again! THANKS JOYCE!

tried it, I'll pass....

After doing Joyce's 'Bone-building body-shaping workout' for a few months, I did not enjoy 'Definition' as much. The full pyramid method was a real bore - too much of the same thing, sorry to be so honest. I am also confused as to what 'definition' really means, if it does not involve adding ANY bulk. As some others mentioned, putting avocados on the forbidden food list really saddened me - we eat avocados every day while they are in season because they are delicious, and cheap where we live. As far as the workout goes, I am looking for a few to rotate through every few weeks, but 'Definition' will not be one of them.

Phenomenal book! It really has just about everything you would need to know about the subject. Aside from a couple of minor typos, it's extremely well-written and engaging. What's really nice is that the author covers all the bases...I was left with very few unanswered questions after reading the entire book. I've just completed a fast, kidney cleanse, and liver cleanse and everything that was mentioned was right on the money. My eyes have brightened up tremendously and a fibromyalgia-type pain and numbness in my leg that has been bothering me for several months gone. One thing that was unexpected is the psychological effects that its caused as well - just astounding! My overall mood (which I thought was pretty good before) has improved, my ability to cope with stresses is increased, and I've shed myself of some addictive behaviors (completely quit smoking - it was on its way out the door before - and totally lost any desire to drink alcohol). One caveat...this is no quick fix, it really does require a lifestyle change. However, in one review they mention that the author says not to eat meat at all and pushes a vegetarian agenda. This is not the case. The author simply says that the amount of protein that we consume is far in excess of what is necessary and recommends cutting meat down to smaller servings 2 or 3 times a week (and only organic meat, the fat which is in all meat and dairy is basically a toxin sponge).

I've read countless books on health and cleansing and this still stands up as one of the best I've read. It has more information than any other detox book I've read, and gave me invaluable new sources of cleansing and healing the body, which led me to new routes of research on the internet and finding some very excellent health web sites and products. *Spoiler* The rebounder works wonders for your health- along with so many other things Fife explained about. I highly recommend this book. I'm studying to be a Naturopathic Doctor, and did many years of research before choosing this route. This is a book I still pick up a couple of years later. I enjoy how much of the spectrum he covers. Health savvy or not, Fife walks you through changing your life, and educates you on many things every health-conscience person needs to know. Great Book !!

I have suffered from a chronic auto immune disease for years and have seen many doctors, both western and alternative, who told me much of the same info that is in this book (that is, the alternative medicine doctors. I won't go into how much sicker the western doctors made me!) but it wasn't until I read this book that I understood the WHY behind my doctors' recommendations. I've been on the detox program for a few months now and saw immediate results. I lost weight and my body is functioning so much better. Friends and co-workers keep commenting on how healthy and radiant I look and they have all ordered the book. My auto immune disease symptoms are all but gone, with only a few minor flare ups relating to a "healing crisis." This detox isn't a quick fix. It will take months--and really--a lifestyle change, but it's worth it. I will warn you that the book is a bit older and has its share of type-o's and redundancy, but the information is still very relevant and even if you just follow the natural foods diet, exercise and fasting recommendations in this book you will see results. I am living proof!

I use to own this book and somehow I lost it. I am a person who likes to use herbal remedies, for illnesses, if they exist. If you are that kind of person too, then this BOOK is for you. It is wonderful. It gives you herbal recipes for almost anything you can think of. From hair loss problems, to high blood pressure, and even obesity. I hope this helps. Oh yeah, if you happen to find a copy of this book, I suggest you get it because there is not another like it.

Whether you want to ease sore muscles, dye a piece of cloth, freshen your breath, or figure out what just sprouted among the pepper plants, this is the first and last book you should reach for. Much of the book is dedicated to identifying herbs and other plants, with line drawings, full descriptions, instructions on which parts of the plant to use for which needs, and medicinal values. However, there is also a convenient dye chart, instructions on cosmetic preparations and even a bit of plant legend and lore. Did you know that the ancient Greeks wore marjoram as wedding flowers? You would if you owned this book! I am here to buy a replacement for my well used 1978 copy, which finally failed to survive its latest move.

This great resourceful paperback on herbs,is still the best one around. It's packed with useful herbal information and history.Anyone interested in herbs should read this book.Anyone also studying and practicing Wicca can learn a lot from this little book. For the cost of this book, its well worth it.When first published ,in 1974,it was well ahead of its time.Nowadays, everybody knows the health benefits of 'Green Tea',Ginko Biloba and Hoodia.Green Tea burns body fat, aids digestion, surpresses appetite, flushes out free-radicals,and kills bacteria around your teeth.I was glad to have read it years ago and it got me thinking about better, healthier living. It also got me interested in the environment and gardening. When you hurt the environment, you hurt others and it will come back to haunt you too.

As the author says more than once, not everyone will relate to his particular story with food. I think anyone with eating issues would find something in this book to be of help. I could relate all too well, and appreciate the author's candor at revealing things about himself, and his thoughts, that were of help to my own situation.

How is everyone doing in conquering this:
~*weight loss battle*~?
It really is a WAR against those excess pounds, isn't it?

After reading HUNGRY by Allen Zadoff, I decided not to call it a 'diet' because it is not suppose to be a reducing diet but a healthy way of eating.

This book gives you some ammunition to WIN that war!
(Although you will always have to be 'on guard' for the rest of your life!)

It was a worthwhile book to read...It had short one or two pages chapters. None of that recipe filler pages.

One of our 'assignments' was to try and figure out WHY
we over-eat and make ourselves over-weight.
There is a reason. He suggested maybe it is an addiction
or a disease we need to treat not just cover up with a 'diet'?

He lost 150 lbs...The way he did it was to analyze his feelings and
then to not eat foods that are trigger foods. He had us make a list
of red, yellow and green foods....red meaning those
that we just can't stop eating once we start (like sweets)
yellow meaning those that sometimes cause over-eating problems, and
green are those that are OK and good for us; never lead
to a binge. (Like a traffic light, red STOP, yellow CAUTION and green GO.

He didn't tell us what to eat because everyone's list would be
different.
Allen reminded me of my nephew that also lost a great deal of weight.

For instance, how when Allen was at a normal weight, after weighing 360 lbs. (And having only one pair of pants that fit that were worn out in the crouch.)
It was difficult to think like a normal weight person. (Like how to react when a pretty girl flirted with him.)

This is the suggestion that I am going to have to do since I am
an evening nibbler. Only eat 3 meals each day...(From the green list.)
"Three delicious, abundant meals made up of foods I can handle."Zadoff.

It sounds so sensible yet I haven't done that in a long long time.
I need to stop this mindless evening snacking...that mouth hungry not
stomach hungry HABIT! It is very very hard to break these bad eating habits!

If you can get the book, I highly recommend it.

Allen's final statement:
"Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can
start from now and make a brand new ending." Carl Bard

I really enjoyed this book. In clear, no nonsense language Allen Zadoff managed to convey to the reader the pain of being very over weight with no self pity, no real excuses. He ate too much at one time. Period. Then, somehow after reaching 300+ pounds, he looked inside of himself and accepted a truth. He needed to eat less. So - no more dieting for him. He decided to establish a traffic light of an idea. Red light for dangerous food, yellow light for foods that need to be approached with caution and green food - the kind one can eat lots of and manage to stay slim. I loved this idea. I don't have a huge weight problem, but I do eat too much at times for a variety of reasons. I swear - as soon as I did what Zadoff said, wrote down my red, yellow and green foods, I began to eat less. And I began to lose weight. Wow. Thanks, Mr. Zadoff. You did a great job. I hope everyone who has ever struggled with weight reads this book. It's short but the message is clear. Look at what you eat. Identify problem foods. Approach them with caution. I guess he said it all.

I can't believe such a terrible book can be reviewed so highly. I think he didn't say anything everyone who has a problem with food doesn't know. IN fact he doesn't really reveal himself at all. He uses thumor to hide behind rather than tell the truth. How does such a skimpy book get published?. He hints O.A is the only answer to overeating. He never explains what home problems kept his addiction active. I find it cruel to give hope to others with one method while telling us nothing else works. Everyone is differet and what works is different. This book is not quite a memoir, not quite a self help book, not quite a book. It is said to be a non diet book but I felt like I had been put on a skimpy diet with this badly written book. sorry. but I could write a more truthful book in my sleep and I have kept off sixty pounds. Hey, let me write a book. Save your money and time on this one. I felt cheated.

I first came across this book at 3 am on another insomnia night and was impatient for a solution. I didn't want any more pills that made me feel drugged the next day. I didn't want any more useless sleep hygiene advice, which worked intermittently. I also didn't want to pay $2,000 for a sleep study that would tell me I needed more pills and better sleep hygiene! Having suffered from insomnia for eight years, I was ready for a real solution.

Two things caught my eye about this book. One, a large percentage of the reviewers were medical professionals who used the method in their practices. Two, the book suggested an approach that would actually relax the body and calm the mind, not drug it or try to control everything around it and hope it behaves. This was what I was looking for!

After trying the methods, I can confirm that they work spectacularly; however, I do have a word of caution on the methods. Follow the steps in the book as exactly as possible, and don't go on memory alone when first doing them. Doing them incorrectly--even slightly so--can give you poor results.

So bad I couldn't finish it

I purchased this book after reading the great reviews. It is wordy, poorly written, and gives the impression the author is just making up sleep advice. The medical credentials of the author and the souces are suspect as well (the author lists GCFP after his name...what is that?). If you think yoga may help you relax then this may be for you. If you are looking for a better written book from a scientific rather than spiritual perspective I would recommend "The Insomnia Answer".

I love "Mr. Abe's Goody Book." I bought copies for my family last Christmas and they are all using his recipes. Mr. Sylvester has created recipes that are easy to follow. I wanted to change my eating habits and become healthier. I found this cook book helpful in changing my diet. I don't give up flavor and I don't feel like I'm depriving myself from eating what I enjoy! So far, every recipe that I have tried has turn out wonderful. Mr. Kenny Sylvester is the best chef in Mobile!!!

Incredible!! 5 Stars!!

Incredible, that says it all. I am from the Gulf Coast and know what the great southern seafood taste like... and I did not think anyone could make a healthy dish from some of my favorite foods. Then I tried Kenny's recipes and WOW! I was astonished. Dishes like his Shrimp Creole was even better... some of the best I have ever had... No loss of taste here! And Healthy! Thanks Kenny!

A book you should have.

I purchased my copy of Mr. Abe's Goody Book at Bebo's in Mobile, Alabama. It was bought as a gift for my sister, and she loves it. Having to pay more attention to her health, she now can easily prepare healthy meals that taste great thanks to this book. These few words of mine would be incomplete unless I gave some insight about Mr. Sylvester. Kenneth is and has always been my very best and dearest friend, and I am sure there are many others who would say the same of him. Kenneth introduced me to different cuisines as we would frequent various restaurants about Mobile during the 70's. We would eat as much as we could of whatever we wanted. I noticed a change in Kenneth in the 80's when I would visit him from Texas. Now when we would have dinner he would make comments about my menu selections of red meat and French fries, then he would proceed to lecture me about the detriments of an unhealthy diet containing excess cholesterol and fats. I figured that he knew something of what he was saying since he owned a catering business at the time. The point that I want to make is that when you purchase this book, know that in it Kenneth has combined 30 years of experience in excellent cooking with an eye towards a healthy diet and lifestyle.

I loved loved this book....I checked it out at our local library and read it cover to cover in two days...Thats a record for me...I love that this woman took a sensible approach to her weight loss and over a course of 4 years, took the weight off. I find it frustrating when all the books tell of 100+ weight loss in a matter of 10-12 months...It made me feel lazy and inadequate to have lost 60 in a year...but not anymore having read this book. So many of the things she went thru I can relate to and know that there is light at the end of the tunnel gives me so much added motivation to keep doing what I am doing and it will pay off...It has already...Definately a book to read over and over again:)

This is a wonderful book showing some ups and more downs of the scale. This woman shows by example in her experience that if we don't follow a food regiment 100% you can still attain your goal of loosing weight. It is really refreshing to read that you can make a goal even when you slip away from it now and then, but you have to not give up. A good read hard to put down.

I bought this book on Saturday and finished it on Tuesday. I could hardly put it down. I also weigh what Sandra did and then some. This book was really motivating and I saw so much of myself in it so I could relate to it. It really gives me hope and shows me I am normal. I have been going to T.O.P.S. since April 2001 and have lost over 30 pounds and began backsliding. Now I see that may happen from time to time and I just need to stay motivated. Thank you for this book.I am a 37 yr. old widow with 2 children and really need to stay on track to be here for them and I think this book will help me.

I enjoyed the spirit with which this book was written. By the time I finished I felt as though I knew Sandra and her wonderful supportive family. I was cheering her on throughout the book. Not only did she lose weight for herself but she chose this time to help others and start up aerobic classes for women who feel left out at most health clubs. Her relationship with Richard Simmons made me smile. They had such mutual respect. It is wonderful that she accomplished what she did, helped others and at the same time wrote an enjoyable uplifting book.

In particular I liked the way she did not hold back her feelings or her problems. She tells it "like it is". I recommend this book even if weight loss is not the goal. She puts a positive spin on other things as well.

5 stars isn't enough!!!

Not only is this book the bargain of the year, but it is literally the best diet book ever written. This lady tells her story from the beginning to what is going on today. It is like reading her diary. There are no gaps to the story-which I really appreciated. She tells you every step she took to lose the weight including what exercise she did along the way. She also tells you how your family and friends will react to your weight loss. For anyone who wants a "Step by Step" account of how a friend lost her weight, this is a "must" read. After reading Sandra's book, you feel like you are her friend. Very inspiring with an honest approach to weight loss. I can't say enough about this book!!

This book is probably the best book on health that I have ever read. I have travelled all over the world over the past several years and this book stays with me everywhere I go. I haven't ever used this book as a detox program per se; I choose instead to use it as a reference book in daily life. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a true book of wisdom on purifying your life.

Thank you Dr. Fitzgerald
