This book is wonderful, even if you get it just to look at the pictures. I'm new to the world of vegan baking, and I bought this along with Isa's 2 other cookbooks. I like that they give you useful information along with the recipes. I've made 2 cupcakes so far, I wasnt blown away by either one, but I plan to try some of the more interesting ones in here. You do need a lot of ingredients that the average baker doesnt normally have on hand, but I'm slowly stocking up so I can take over the world with my cupcakes!

A great way to introduce veganism to family

I've had this book for awhile, but I feel it's time to finally review it. This cookbook is truly the perfect way to show family and friends that being vegan isn't a big deal--no really. I'm the only vegan in my family, but I can't wait to knock everyone's socks off at Christmas with these delicious recipes (I'm thinking blueberry lemon creme cake for the adults, and 'decorate-it-yourself' banana split cupcakes for the younguns). Please buy this book. I love exotic vegan cooking as much as the next person, but I don't have to funds to acquire the really weird ingredients. This book has those exotic ingredients, but also simple recipes with common ingredients. I'm hoping this book will propel me to official baker of the extended family, making each gathering a little less cruel!

I've been a vegan since 1989 (and a vegetarian since 1984) and didn't give much thought to baking or sweets because I didn't know how to get around dairy and especially eggs in baking. Cupcakes were the last thing I ever thought I would bake. The recipes are amazing and what I love the best is that the cupcakes don't fall apart. I baked 2 dozen cupcakes recently for my niece's birthday party and people couldn't believe that they were vegan.....

Highly, highly recommended!!!!

Simple, Common Sense Nutrition Advice and Guidelines

Review Date: 2008-07-15
This book was recommended to me by my doctor when I asked him some questions about nutrition. I quite enjoyed this book and most certainly feel it was worth my while. There's not much that's mind-blowing here, there's no easy or magic secret to good health, but it spells out proper nutrition clearly and concisely and does recommend some foods you may not know of or consider, like quinoa as an example. The book is based on years of research, and I have no doubt that anyone's health would improve by following the advice in Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy.

This book is exactly what I was looking for: scientific information related to nutrition and health. It is clear, easy to read, and provides practical ideas for implementation. I have already changed my diet and feel great. I've even lost weight without trying. I really appreciate a book that takes all the research that has been done and boils it down into a readable text. This book has done that better than I expected.

With so much news constant inundating all of us on the most recent nutrition fads it's often difficult to decide what the right choices are when it comes to eating.

This book is an excellent source of advice citing which studies make sense to pay attention to and what sorts of dietary changes we can all be making to improve our lives. I purchased 2 copies, one for myself, and one for my parents.

The quality of the books are excellent. I had a problem receiving the books, though. When tracking them I was told they were delivered, but I had never received them. I got connected with customer service through the website and they helped make things right by re-sending my order. These books came in the same time I should have received my other books. I feel confident that I can order through Amazon again and they will make sure that I am satisfied. Thank you, Amazon!

Superfoods was a great find. By following and eating the recommended superfoods, I notice that my skin color became more glowing and also my energy have been extremely high then usual. Once I added a exercise regimen to these healthy eating habits, I felt the transition inside and out. I would truly recommended this book to anyone who is looking for a healthy life change. This is the perfect eating lifestyle to follow.

Great book though I disagree that some are really superfoods...

I loved the simple and enthusiastic style of the author, especially as he compares (in the introduction) the hypothetical 68-year-old who is on pharmaceuticals with the 68-year-old that is still physically active because he ate right.

Dr. Pratt somehow chose the top 14 superfoods, based on all kinds of studies which he cites. Though I have researched nutrition a lot, I learned plenty of gems and pearls from this book, such as the value of eating (organic) orange peels for the limonene, the importance of eating the orange pulp (high in Vitamin C), rolling a citrus fruit before juicing to get more of the juice out, low calorie ways to get high amounts of nutrients (ex: pumpkins), squeezing a teabag to get much more of the flavonoids released, and that spinach is an unequaled superfood.

I gave only four stars because a few of the foods he recommends have a strong downside. For example, while yogurt is the least indigestible of all dairy, most people simply can't handle dairy and (as proven in The China Study) the casein protein actually increases the odds of cancer. Also grains--whether whole or not--are not the easiest of foods to digest. He also lists "fluoride" on the ingredients of tea as if that were a good thing, whereas it has been proven toxic (read The Fluoride Deception, which is packed with research) and it is unfortunate that the tea plant (which in itself is a great superfood) absorbs this toxin from the environment. Even soy, unless eaten sparingly, can present health problems due to the excess of phytoestrogens. And Dr. Pratt suggests on several pages that we microwave food, though microwaving has been proven to create toxins in food. Eating microwaved food was found to cause abnormal changes in human blood and immunity in a study done by Dr. Hertel of Switzerland, and microwave ovens were even banned in Russia.

Not Just for Vegans and Vegetarians
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-12-03
It is a testament to John Robbins that this book is still a bestseller on Amazon after so many years. In fact, his book is even more relevant today than it was when it was first published.

Robbins advocates for a vegan diet by mixing compelling stories with facts that support vegetarianism. I saw that one of the reviewers described the book as "sappy", but it's all a matter of perspective. I personally wouldn't want to read a book that was just a list of facts. If I wanted numbers on how many animals were slaughtered in factory farms, I could probably go to an industry website.

That said, even if you're not a vegetarian or a vegan, the book inspires you to think about your habits without being militant in its approach. Only a very cynical person would not be moved by the story about the pig farmer who had repressed a childhood memory (won't say what it is because that would be a spoiler) and then radically changed his life.

So, you don't have to be a vegan or vegetarian to find this book useful and enjoyable to read. It'll make you go, "hmmmm" and think more consciously about how the food you eat affects your health and the planet. And, it will do that without hitting you over the head with dire warnings and guilt-trips.

Great!!!!!

Review Date: 2008-11-11
Start reading this engaging book at any place and you'll want to keep going. The author, John Robbins, passed over his heirship to the Baskin and Robbins ice cream success. Without condemning his father and uncle, he transformed his pain by knowing and seeing what too much ice cream and other animal based products do to people into a humanitarian masterpiece.

The book carefully exposes (with thorough endnotes) major fallacies held by most people and, at the same time, provides a realistically attainable solution. And did I mention that it's engaging?

I'm not a vegetarian, not young (I'm 50), not overweight and have no cardiovascular issues. I still believe that killing for food is ethical.
Until reading this book, I usually ate a "well-rounded diet," including red meat, large glasses of whole milk, cheese, chicken and eggs. To me, vegans were cultish, over-board fanatics.

But because of this book, my wife and I now see that a plant based diet is more rational and healthy. Dare I admit that I now want us and our children to become vegans?

Reading this book compels the conclusion that we act in our own self-interest, as well as the planet's, by eating a plant based diet. The book shatters myths regarding the supposed need to eat meat, dairy and eggs. It illuminates the misinformation spread by the cattle, swine and poultry industries. To achieve and keep whatever strength, smarts and health we can, this book cogently asserts that we'd be better off eliminating animal products.

As a beacon that approaches its subject with zeal while maintaining an objective tone (usually) and compassion for us who are ignorant (always). The thinking set forth in this book could truly change our lives and eventually our planet.

If you can't afford it, borrow it from a friend or library.

Covers every issues related to meat - Great Book

I loved this book because it covered all aspects of the world that are touched by the meat industry. He talks about the way animals are raised, fed and massacred. Then John brings up the environment and how it is suffering from our hunger for meat, how we are using the resources of our planet, polluting it and marking it for years to come. He then brings the human consequences, how it affects our health, not only from eating meat, but also from how the polluted environment affects us. To this we can't forget the horrible conditions in which meat packing workers are subjected.

A must read that will lead you to want to learn even more about it, and he offers a panoply of resources you can use to verify his information.

Life changing book.

I have had this book for about 6 or 7 years and it is one I have always had with me. I have used it to experiment with my own health and it has improved as a result. It has been easy for me to understand, it seems to say things that I feel like I know already inside myself, from my own experience. I also had the chance to meet the author and found him to be kind and caring, wanting to help others but not judgmental. I highly recommend the book!

Eastern tradition meets Western nutrition

Review Date: 2008-10-30
I have recently been studying Feng Shui, which has introduced me to Macro Biotics, acupuncture, Traditional Chinese medicine and the eastern philosophy of Taoism. If I hadn't learned about the 5 elements and yin and yang, I don't think I could've comprehended much of what has been written in many of the books that are out there- and I've ploughed through several. This book, however, not only gives a much better and more complete explanation than many of the other books that I've read, but I think that someone new to eastern medicine and philosophy could very easily understand this. Having been actively involved in nutrition for the last 12 years, I am familiar with many of the options that are available in alternative and natural medicine. This nutritional plan, however, makes the most common sense of any I have read about or tried. It just "feels" right to me. I bought four copies to give to family members for Christmas. And I just gave one to my clinical nutritionist for her birthday. She hadn't seen it and was overjoyed. I have been talking to her for months about "stuck qi" and "summer heat". Now we will be on the same page. She mentioned that she's interested in studying acupuncture after her kids get a little older. I think that maybe I had something to do with her decision. That and the fact that she saw incredible results in me when I visited my TCM doctor. Spread the word.

I had studied Barbara Brennan's "Light" books years ago. Donna Eden made the information so simple and direct, it immediately changed my outlook on quite a few of my life's issues. The results were dramatic and I'm still reading this book on a daily basis to confirm and enhance these changes. I've even talked friends and family into ordering their own copies. This is the most impressive book that I've had the pleasure of reading in many years.

An empowering book to help you take more control of yourself and your health

Bottom Line: Buy it
This book is FANTASTIC. Why? Well, because it is written for those who want to take their health into a more alternative direction, but are at a loss maybe what to do. In a word, self empowerment.
It explains kinesiology, and how you can muscle test with a partner to uncover what's going on in your body (and you don't need to go to medical school).
Plus, it's loaded with energy exercises you can do. From working with magnets, to the chakras, to clearing out each organ's neurolymphatics, clearing and tracing the meridians, to spiritual exercises when you need help realigning your energy, to a dental chart and what tooth corresponds to what organ, and the list goes on. This has more exercises littered through the pages than any other book I've ever come across.
I reference this book a lot, and highly recommend it, would also recommend the Touch for Health book by Thie.

The energy exercises in this book are easy and once you learn them, you can do most of the them without anyone even knowing. I was able to learn them by reading and looking at the pictures but when I saw the video, it was even more helpful. I highly recommend this book. Donna Eden shares wonderful stories of patients and even her own journey about how she got started. This book has encouraged me to seek an education in Touch for Health. The only downside for the lay person would be the meridians. If you haven't studied acupuncture, you will have difficulty trying to follow/find the meridians. It will definitely take some practice and memorization. Most of the exercises can be done alone or with a partner. It's fun to practice on others and see how changes occur after energy testing. Most of the people I taught have experienced immediate changes and felt lighter or more alert. It was interesting to witness first-hand someone who is stressed tell you that they feel a difference in their body, just by tapping on an area of the body and breathing.

I originally read this book when it came out about 10 years ago. I found it interesting, but didn't do the exercises. However, it stayed in the back of my mind, and I knew that someday I wanted to take a class from Donna. I recently had the opportunity to do so, and now I'm hooked on energy medicine.

When you see Donna in person, you realize that she is her own best advertisement for what she teaches. She radiates vitality, health, and joy, and you just know that it is possible for you to feel this way as well.

I am now practicing my 5 minute routine twice a day, and am working with an energy medicine practitioner to fine tune my energy. As someone who has suffered for years with adrenal fatigue, I'm amazed at how my energy level is improving. I'm actually coming home from work with energy to spare, instead of feeling absolutely wiped out. That in itself is a miracle.

Also, anyone who works with the public knows how exhausting some people can be. Some of my customers and coworkers are "energy vampires", and I would get totally wiped out around them. Thanks to Donna, I now use routines to protect myself from undesirable drains on my energy, and I am feeling so much better. I lock myself in the bathroom for a bit of "Expel the Venom" and "Zip Up", and I'm good as new.

I highly recommend this book, along with the Energy Medicine Kit. In 5 minutes a day, you can start to turn your life around. Thanks, Donna!

I first used a copy of this book way back when Richard Hittleman had a PBS program on yoga. I've returned to this book on and off ever since.

The yoga practice he teaches here is:

1) easy to do for anyone, regardless of fitness level or age.
2) presented in simple, daily, DO-able sequences.
3) nicely illustrated with photographs that show exactly how to do the postures.
4) supplemented with daily "yogic wisdom" that teaches what yoga practice can do for you.
5) finished with practice routines that you can use, well, forever.

In short, this is one of the best beginner yoga books out there. One that you'll use for a lifetime.

I became acquainted with Richard Hittleman through his PBS program, "Yoga for Health." As a young adult, I used to watch this show on a regular basis. Imagine how pleased I was to find a book based on the same type of exercises which were on this particular program.
This is the third time I have purchased this book. The first copy fell apart after many years of use. The second was a gift to a friend and this last one is for my husband and myself.
As you can see I am very partial to this book. I like the fact that there is the 28 day plan which you can do at your own pace and a schedule you can follow after you have completed this plan, which incorporates all the exercises you have previously learned. I have seen other yoga books, but this is my favorite because it stresses the importance of yoga being "concerned with the health and beauty of the organism as a unified whole," rather than just self-improvement for the body.

This is a really good book but I found it a little hard to read and I enjoy reading medical books. I do like that it's entirely about the mental aspect of thryoid disease unlike most other books that just explain all the symptoms in a basic way. This devles into so much about depression and anxiety and the changes relative to your thyroid hormones. I was shocked how much the two relate to each other and was happy to know I'm not crazy...it's my thyroid! :)

I found this book very informative, organized and easy to follow. I have loved the few recipes I made already and look forward to making more. I highly recomend it!

This is a beautiful book, with pictures and quotes that are lovely and inspiring. Not to mention that the recipes are really fabulous! Great for entertaining vegan and non-vegan guests and having everyone feeling satisfied and complimenting the chef. The restaurant in Portland, Oregon is well worth the trip, as I'm sure the one in Hawai'i is as well. A must-have for any vegan kitchen.

I'm a vegan living outside NYC. I am a huge fan of your book, the hardcover, it's actually my favorite cookbook. It is beautifully photographed and just a lovely book to own and use in your kitchen!

I've tried about half of these recipes and had good success. Breads, pastas, pizzas, salads, dressings, deserts - it's all here. This is vegan heaven!

This book confirms all my misgivings about the way cancer is treated today and what utter sheep we are with the present medical system(s). Thanks for writing it. At this point I am only 1/3 way through.
