This book has a thorough description of symptoms related to various diseases and then offers helpful suggestions on what one can do to treat a specific disease. Using this guide I was able to suspect I had Celiac's disease and so I ordered the blood work on my own. Sure enough the results came back positive for Celiac's.

Nutritional Healing, thoughtful and generally complete

I found this book, Prescription for Nutritional Healing, very useful and complete. It's a great resource guide to nutritional healing. Her organization and presentation of the material is so easy to read. In part one she offers the basic building blocks of health, (nutrition, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, engymes, herbs, natural foods, etc.) In the second part of her book, she lists a fairly complete listing of the disorders with descriptions of each and the remedies and therapies, and in the last part of her book she summarizes various other alternative therapies (like aryuvedic medicine, the use of music and sound, blood purification, color therapy, the use of crystals, the use of magnets, exercise, yoga, and hormonal treatments, and she also includes a nice listing of pain management alternatives. I love the no-nonsense, quick reference organizational quality and especially how informative it is for a lay person and how she sometimes offers not just one or two modalities of remedies or therapies, but several. She also indicates her favorite, good quality products that one can purchase at most quality health food stores. While there are some products that will need to be ordered online or directly from the company, her suggestions are rich and varied and one is bound to find what one needs.

There's also a nice quick reference section towards the front of the book around/approximately page 70-110 that list various herbs and their uses. Although, I'd like to see this section much expanded to include more of the listed herbs' uses, but also to include many more herbs listed as well, along with any 'warnings' on all the herbs too.

She has a nice glossary at the back, plus generous listings of product mfg and distributors, medical and health organizations, and a strong index.

I'd like to see her ad more illnesses and disorders and go into greater depth on some of the ones that she lists that are currently somewhat abbreviated. I'd like to see an even stronger glossary, and for the index to be updated.

Nevertheless, this is a great book to have, whether one is just learning or is an informed reader about natural and alternative remedies. I highly recommend it. Buy it.

Anymore, it's hard knowing how to treat or prevent physical or medical problems, be it the common cold or chronic conditions such as diabetes and cancer. I stumbled by accident upon this book and have slowly been making my way through it (It's 869 pages!).

I view the book as a 'starter' for many conditions, rather than one that has definitive and detailed advice or recommendations. That's not a bad thing, but it means the reader will need to do a bit more research on some of the supplements/herbs/treatments that are recommended. As an example, the author frequently suggests Colloidal Silver (for everything from ear infections to rattlesnake bites). If you look this up online, however, there is a HUGE split between the traditional and non-traditional health/medical communities as to whether this is safe to use. Granted, this isn't uncommon, but it's particularly prounonced with this supplement.

Anyhow, the book is well-organized and covers a lot of topics. If you have a certain condition and have looked into common causes and treatments, this book probably won't tell you more than you already know. But if you're looking for a good overview of how to treat a whole variety of conditions, this is a great book.

Excellent Book-A must have!

I have an older edition of the Prescription for Nutritional Healing Book for years and it is such a life saver for me. Prescription drugs never work for me due to the dangerous side effects. This book has saved me many times and not only did it teach me about nutritional healing, it also has excellent recommendations for vitamins, supplements and herbs that helped me to nurture myself back to health. So, I decided to buy this latest edition and it has all the necessary updates that I needed. It truly is a good buy and a must have!

Fabulous introduction to the world of Vegan baking!!!

I've been nearly vegan for almost 2 years. By that I mean, I've been vegan in just about every way except baked goods. I'm a HUGE sweets person and am now excited to have these amazing recipes. I think the best thing about this cookbook is that if you're a baker you most likely have all of the ingredients or can easily get them at a regular grocery store if you're not a Whole Foods shopper. I also love that the recipes make exactly one dozen. My boyfriend doesn't eat sweets so I make a dozen cupcakes and keep them in the refrigerator and eat one a day. They will last over a week in the refrigerator but as they near weeks they get dry - so find a friend or neighbor to share with if you'll be the only one eating an entire batch! Also, the recipes are simple. I'm normally in and out of the kitchen in an hour with my cupcakes made, cooling and simply awaiting the frosting that I'll put on them a few hours later(along with my kitchen cleaned). The book gives you great ideas for being creative and changing up the recipes that are printed which makes it fun to come up with your own stuff using the basic recipes, although the fancy cupcake recipes in the book are amazing as is. I don't have any vegan friends so sometimes I tell people they're vegan and sometimes I don't - either way, everyone has LOVED them! No one notices a difference between them and non-vegan cupcakes.
Be sure to take the time to read the begining of the book as there are lots of great tips and tricks for making perfect cupcakes.

Every single recipe in this book is awesome, and there's no other way to put it. Thanks, Isa! It's so much easier to feed omni friends and relatives when there are luxurious delicious fantastic junk food recipes like these to make. Her other books are just as great, by the way.

I've made cupcakes every weekend since I bought the book. I know, I'll be a blimp. Can't help it!

I think the basic golden vanilla cupcakes are the best yellow cake recipe I've ever tasted. The version using Earth Balance is best. I put the chocolate "buttercream" frosting on them, and I think this is the hands-down best combination in the book. You can get really fancy and time consuming with some of these recipes but I tend to stick with simpler combinations.

One thing I noticed is that it doesn't specify what vegan shortening is best: I've used the Spectrum nonhydrogenated stuff that's basically just palm oil. It works fine. Maybe the author has a better recommendation, though. The buttercreams call for a half and half blend of the shortening and Earth Balance or similar. This sounded weird to me, but last time I made the buttercream with just Earth Balance and it was definitely too salty and a bit chemically tasting, so the half and half thing is the way to go.

Ah. Unless you've got a sweeter sweet tooth than mine (and it'd be hard to achieve) you can definitely make 1/2 recipe of the chocolate buttercream, or 1/4 recipe of the vanilla buttercream, to pipe onto 12 cupcakes. Using the recommended amount of frosting would be insane and out of control. But maybe you'd prefer that!

Refined Sugar Isn't Vegan!

I really enjoyed the creativity of these recipes, but most, if not all of them, called for refined sugar, which isn't considered vegan. While some vegans are happy to use it, I don't, and had a hard time reworking the recipes around that. It basically invalidated my whole reason for buying the book.

I am not vegan, but the basic chocolate cupcakes are so moist, its the only recipe I use. Many of the recipes have a long list of ingredients but the end product is well worth it. Try the Agave cupcakes; great for people who are watching their sugar and they are so yummy. Also, if you like waffles get their other book Vegan with a Vengence and try the chocolate chip waffle and the Ginger pear waffle (I omitted the ginger since I am not too keen on ginger in sweets)...they are wonderful.

(p.s. i hate the taste of soy, but these were freaking awesome!) if you like cupcakes buy this book! i am hooked!!

If you want an easy to read version of what you would find in the medical literature, this book is for you. The book offers great advice on how to improve the quality of one's diet through such means as consuming whole grain foods, an abundance of fruits and vegetables, and exchanging trans and saturated fats for unsaturated ones. What I particularly enjoy about the book is that it does not emphasize only one factor to improve one's diet. A truly good diet is built upon balance and diversity. This is a great book for anyone to read.

[[ASIN:B001W5AM28 Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating] I had a copy of a book with this same title. I must have lent it to someone anyhow I can't find it. I purchased this one from Amazon it seems to be a different printing. I don't remember it in this format. There seemed to be more useful information, my other copy was a paperback also. I suspect this copy is an older printing. Look for the Paperback version I believe it is better, more up to date.

This was both an intertaining a introspective read. Camryn Manheim is funny, smart, human, and beautiful. This book made me look at the excuses I make for my failures and the things I allow to stand in the way of my success. I was able to relate to Camryn much more than I could relate to Oprah when I read her book. It is a book for all women, all mothers, and a book I would want my boyfriend to read. Thank you Camryn, I wish we could meet some day.

I just happened into a copy of the book when I had a little time to kill, then I could hardly put it down. I enjoyed the book and the many reviews that have been written here. I normally write reviews on obscure books where there are only a few, if any, reviews so this is different for me and I doubt if i have too much to add. Beyond the self acceptance theme that has been much reviewed (I have fat issues and support Camryn's views (mostly)), I liked the book on many other levels. Of course I liked the humor and human interest of growing up in America. The struggle for success story is good too. I especially liked the unconventional approach to the book itself. Frnakly, I did not much the Cammy--fat dialogs, but I liked many of the other, unusual things like asides and notes to herself and others throughout. There were other quirky approaches that I really liked too. I really like the book and recommend it highly.

I love Camryn Mannheim and her book. I'd give this a 4.5 if I could, because since she wrote the book, she's lost quite a bit of weight and puts the reasoning for it on being a mother.

I hated it when Carnie Wilson went from being a NAAFA member and spokesperson for loving yourself at any size to being obsessed with being thin. She's admitted to lying about why she had WLS and has made a snootful of money pimping it to others. She has been a major factor in the deaths of hundreds of (mostly) women who didn't make it after the surgery and her recommendation of it.

And I am very saddened by Mannheim's abandonment of her principals of fat-acceptance and the people who have supported her and her book.

Isn't there anyone out there who will stay committed to the cause and not cave in when someone runs some cash under their noses or threatens their career if they don't lose weight?

Ack. Love the book. Disappointed in Mannheim today.

Funny, but it didn't make me feel any better about my weight!

Camryn Manheim is an sassy, award-winning actress and laugh-out-loud funny. This book is a personal account of her experiences of fat-ism and her journey to self-acceptance.

Manheim is a natural storyteller and, being overweight myself, there was a lot here to relate to, but although I enjoyed the book, there were no groundbreaking revelations for me here ... though it does make a pretty strong case against society's obsession with being thin, this book is in no way a "self-help" book (to be fair, it doesn't claim to be) and it didn't help me to "make peace" with my fat. It did however make me laugh a lot and that's reason enough to encourage others to read it!

Thank you Camryn, for speaking out for big women everywhere.

John Robbins writes very convincing books. Unfortunately, almost none of his "factual" information is true.

I once spent a week of spare time fact-checking a four paragraph portion of his book finding that his "facts" are fallacious, his statistics misrepresentative, and his expert "quotes" are out-of-context and sometimes reverse the true opinion of the source.

The data in this book are not reliable and present a dangerously false view of the subject.

I read The China Study a few years ago and began to believe that meat and dairy products are harmful to our health. However, I was not fully motivated to make any changes to my diet as a result of reading the book. I read this book last week, and it has changed my entire outlook on my diet and the world. Robbins approaches meat and dairy products from three different angles: 1) the health issues, 2) the treatment of the animals, and 3) the effect of meat production on the environment and other nations and peoples. This book convicted me and convinced me not just in my mind but in my heart. Robbins provides so much scientific data as well as information on the politics and economics. He also includes some personal stories, most prominently that of "the pig farmer," that demonstrate how deep this issue really goes. Robbins treats the subject with a lot of care and thoughtfulness even as he communicates how serious the consequences of our diet choices really are. I am truly grateful for the ways in which this book - this author - has opened my eyes and my heart to the interconnectedness of life.

Gluten? What gluten?

This is a wonderful cookbook! The recipes include all of the basics and classics that I and my celiac friends and relatives crave the most. So far, not a single gluten-eater has known the things I baked were gluten free! The only thing I struggled with was Ms. Robert's assertion that the difference is made by using extra finely ground brown rice flower. So far, there is only one store in the US that sells the brand she recommends and to ship it to me would cost over $25 for a 3 lb. bag. I almost returned the book after finding that out! However, I went to my local health food store, talked to a sales person, and found that the bulk brown rice flour they sold was of a finer grind than Bob's Red Mill - the only other brand available in my stores. I gave it a try and as I said before, have had great success. So - this cookbook will satisfy all those cravings you've been having since giving up gluten AND you can do it without having to order the expensive flour!

Great recipes! Success at last...

This is a great book! The recipes I have tried so far have turned out wonderfully - they look good and are delicious. With 106 customer reviews already available, this book hardly needs another, yet I feel compelled to add mine nonetheless.

Since being diagnosed with Celiac Disease, I've acquired a good deal of practice baking with gluten-free flours. And, while I've invested in numerous books, only Ms. Roberts' book has given me consistent success in my gluten-free baking.

One of the first things you learn in baking with gluten-free flours is that recipes using mostly rice flours and starches taste bloody awful - yet, that's exactly what you find in many gluten-free baking books.

The recipes in Ms. Roberts' book, however, use winning combinations of GF flours like sorghum, teff (love teff!), millet (LOVE millet!) garbanzo, etc, and... oh yeah - even rice flour and starches! Note that while some recipes can be a bit time-consuming, they're easy to make and the process can be sped up by following her advice to store pre-mixed all purpose flour mixes.

So far, I've baked more than a dozen of the recipes in her book, and every one of them has turned out beautifully and tasted delicious. The flavor and texture of the finished results often surpass the wheat breads and baked goods I used to eat. Ms. Roberts' book Gluten-Free Baking Classicswill help you find consistently good results in your GF baking!

You'll love it!!!

My four year old grandson was put on a gluten-free diet recently. He and I have always baked together so this activity became a problem when it came to baking goodies to eat. Snacks we could make but actual baking of cookies, cupcakes, muffins and breads were a problem until I found this WONDERFUL cook book by Annalise Roberts. I have been one happy baker since receiving it. We have made chocolate chip cookies from the book that no one even knows are gluten free. The vanilla cupcakes are like the real thing! I will be making those for his birthday party coming soon. Yesterday I tried my hand at the white bread and FINALLY, after throwing out many, many, many disasters, I have a decent bread for him to enjoy. And enjoy he did and so did the rest of his family. So this book is a "bible" for me now. I used five different recipes and haven't had a flop yet. Would I recommend this book? . . .YOU BET I WOULD! Thanks Annalise!

This book is fantastic. It is a must have if you are interested in Chinese medicine and nutrition. My acupuncturist recommended it to me because of my interest in my supplementing treatment with diet. The book has been so helpful in helping me to better my diet and add things to it that are necessary for my health. What I really like is that although it does stress vegetarian diet, it still makes points about the effectiveness of animal products and meat (which I need for my condition).

The structure of the book is really clear even for a non practicioner. It explains chinese medicine theory simply and goes through many different disorders (helpful if you've had a TCM practicioner diagnose you first) and treatments. It can be used as a reference manual or the whole book can be read through from beginning to end. The latter is recommended because of the different coinciding remedies given throughout will have you flipping back and forth through chapters if you just choose to plunge in to a specific section. I highly recommend this one for your library, you will use it often!

I have fibromyalgia and got tired of doctors experimenting on me with drugs and other substances. The nutrition information out there is highly contradictory, and I wanted to find a way to eat and to live that would make me feel better but also be practical to do and make sense.

Pitchford presents his material in a logical and mostly easy-to-understand way. Drawing from Asian traditions (mostly Chinese medicine but also Ayervedic) with a wealth of supporting Western research, he goes from general to specific so that both those without medical training and those with can make good use of the book. It's far more than just "eat less refined food." If the end result is that you do so, you'll have gotten plenty of value for your purchase and the good news is that you'll want to. But Pitchford also presents much more information, and although the wealth of specifics pertaining to Chinese medicine were too much for me to understand and reconcile, his approaches to my general constitution type and specific medical complaints were very easy to understand and implement and what's best, they work.

Pitchford doesn't have a particular dietary axe to grind, other than the aforementioned elimination of refined foods. His recommended way to eat incorporates lots of whole grains and vegetables, but he doesn't advocate vegetarianism for everyone, nor does he present absolutes such as "you should never eat ______." He talks about easing into a new way of eating and makes it painless to achieve. I have shelves full of books on diet and health, but this is the only one I consider indispensable. I wish I'd started living my life this way before I started collapsing. Thankfully, I am well on my way back to a normal life, and I consider this book a large part of the reason why.

I had studied Barbara Brennan's "Light" books years ago. Donna Eden made the information so simple and direct, it immediately changed my outlook on quite a few of my life's issues. The results were dramatic and I'm still reading this book on a daily basis to confirm and enhance these changes. I've even talked friends and family into ordering their own copies. This is the most impressive book that I've had the pleasure of reading in many years.

Bottom Line: Buy it
This book is FANTASTIC. Why? Well, because it is written for those who want to take their health into a more alternative direction, but are at a loss maybe what to do. In a word, self empowerment.
It explains kinesiology, and how you can muscle test with a partner to uncover what's going on in your body (and you don't need to go to medical school).
Plus, it's loaded with energy exercises you can do. From working with magnets, to the chakras, to clearing out each organ's neurolymphatics, clearing and tracing the meridians, to spiritual exercises when you need help realigning your energy, to a dental chart and what tooth corresponds to what organ, and the list goes on. This has more exercises littered through the pages than any other book I've ever come across.
I reference this book a lot, and highly recommend it, would also recommend the Touch for Health book by Thie.

Very helpful, easy to use and well organized

The energy exercises in this book are easy and once you learn them, you can do most of the them without anyone even knowing. I was able to learn them by reading and looking at the pictures but when I saw the video, it was even more helpful. I highly recommend this book. Donna Eden shares wonderful stories of patients and even her own journey about how she got started. This book has encouraged me to seek an education in Touch for Health. The only downside for the lay person would be the meridians. If you haven't studied acupuncture, you will have difficulty trying to follow/find the meridians. It will definitely take some practice and memorization. Most of the exercises can be done alone or with a partner. It's fun to practice on others and see how changes occur after energy testing. Most of the people I taught have experienced immediate changes and felt lighter or more alert. It was interesting to witness first-hand someone who is stressed tell you that they feel a difference in their body, just by tapping on an area of the body and breathing.

I originally read this book when it came out about 10 years ago. I found it interesting, but didn't do the exercises. However, it stayed in the back of my mind, and I knew that someday I wanted to take a class from Donna. I recently had the opportunity to do so, and now I'm hooked on energy medicine.

When you see Donna in person, you realize that she is her own best advertisement for what she teaches. She radiates vitality, health, and joy, and you just know that it is possible for you to feel this way as well.

I am now practicing my 5 minute routine twice a day, and am working with an energy medicine practitioner to fine tune my energy. As someone who has suffered for years with adrenal fatigue, I'm amazed at how my energy level is improving. I'm actually coming home from work with energy to spare, instead of feeling absolutely wiped out. That in itself is a miracle.

Also, anyone who works with the public knows how exhausting some people can be. Some of my customers and coworkers are "energy vampires", and I would get totally wiped out around them. Thanks to Donna, I now use routines to protect myself from undesirable drains on my energy, and I am feeling so much better. I lock myself in the bathroom for a bit of "Expel the Venom" and "Zip Up", and I'm good as new.

I highly recommend this book, along with the Energy Medicine Kit. In 5 minutes a day, you can start to turn your life around. Thanks, Donna!

Thank you David for sharing your life story and research with us. It was excellent and at times emotional. You've covered every aspect of what a cancer patient goes through. Very emotional but educational. Thanks for the research. Your book is very well-written and convincing. I loved it. Every cancer survivor should read. Thanks again!

I bought and paid for 2 of these books - one to give to a friend. This was around 31 May 2009. Today is 2 July and I still haven't received them. It is very disappointing and I am quite angry about it because the shipping was very expensive and altogether, it cost me some NZD$100 which is a lot of money.

The rate this item is for the book - NOT THE SELLER!!! My sister has this book, so I am rating it based on what little I have read.

What are my rights in this instance? If this is how it's like and it's my first time buying anything from Amazon, then I won't bother buying again. I am really PISSED OFF. If someone from Amazon could get back to me, I would be grateful.

Anticancer is must reading for people who wish to either eat better to help prevent cancer or who have cancer and wish to "strike back" by giving one's body a better chance to respond to the disease. Either way the book is just good sense on how to eat and live better for a better life. A tremendous amount of research is included.

Excellent, up to date, topical, well researched

This is an excellent, well researched approach to diet and nutrition as it pertains to preventing cancer. In my case, I was looking for guidance how to stop the recurrences of my cancer. EAch time cancer returns, one gets more careful and aware of the dangers in our food system. The author has helped me easily get back on the track, do a little at a time and feel confident I am helping my body heal.

The book is well written, easy to understand, and the protocols he suggests are approachable.

I highly recommend this to anyone. It's an excellent book for everyone who wants to stave off cancer.

why cancer is epidemic and what lifestyle changes may limit it--an inspiring and motivational book

This is a very readable book written by a doctor who twice developed brain cancer. He was dissatisfied with the lack of information he received on how to avoid future cancer episodes so he started researching cancer. He discovered that even in populations with low incidence of cancer, people who died from other causes often had microtumors in their bodies and he wondered why the tumors remained small. He searched out information on what limits and what stimulates cancer growth and presents that information in this book. He also discusses why cancer is prevalent (epidemic) and concludes it is due to 3 factors: environment (pollution & chemicals in our food); the type of food that we eat and the stressful and also sedentary nature of our lives. He gives specific (non-drug) suggestions for lifestyle changes that people can take to improve all 3 of these areas and feels that there are no harmful side effects from his suggestions, only the possibility of improved health. After reading it, I am buying 2 copies of this book -- one for me to keep for reference and lifestyle change and one for a friend who is going through chemotherapy

I first found this book browsing through my local library when I was 17 years old. I am now 30 and have always implemented yoga into my daily life. I had no clue what yoga was at the time and I don't even know what inspired me to pick this book up at 17. This book completely changed my life. I just bought 3 copies for friends of mine who have heard me tell them how much I love yoga for years now. I just don't know what to tell them when they say they want to get started out with yoga. Most of them are inflexible and overweight so cannot see themselves doing a lot of the advanced poses and are more interested in running on treadmills, and spending money on the diet industry. I know yoga would help them to lose weight but I don't want them to begin practicing yoga for the sole purpose of losing weight. I also got this book for my mother who is almost 60 and gets discouraged when she tries to follow along with my intermediate yoga dvd's.

This book starts at the basics of yoga with very simple poses. I only did the 28-day yoga plan once and then proceeded to study yoga on my own, attend classes, buy dvd's, eat vegetarian, and learn much more. The book teaches a lot about yoga philosophy and taught me at 17 that yoga is non-competitive and about self-acceptance.

I totally believe that this book changed the direction of my life for the better 13 years ago and that I am a stronger willed person because of yoga and because of this book.

Furthermore, after 2 kids, I do not struggle with my weight like 80% of women I know. I don't waste money on exercise equipment, gym memberships, fad diets. I do yoga and that's it.

This purchase was for my daughter, so I did not actually see it. However, I have a hard-bound copy that is now over 30 years old. Regardless of the age of this publication, the information is useful and reliable. I have seen, on internet, another publication by the same author that has better photos illustrating the positions but this is still a good source of information.
