This is the best handbook of dialysis. This is equally true for the forth edition as for the first edition. You don't need to look for another concise book. No one sentence or word is redundant, every information is up-to-date. No doubt you can find there every practical information you are looking for.

I am a 48 year old male who has been on hemodialysis for nearly 29 years. I pride myself in the fact that I have always been very much involved in my treatment. Over the years, I have made it a priority in my life to stay abreast of directions the dialysis industry has taken, some good, some not so good. When my docter suggested this book at first I was skeptical. I felt it was going to be another simplisticapproach to being a "good" patient as oppossed to being a knowledgable, proactive patient.
Although there is a lot of terminology which must learned. If the patient can persist,he/she WILL improve his/her standard of living. A must have for all in the field, Pt., RN, or MD.

This is about the best handbook there is in the field of dialysis. It somehow manages to marry the conciseness and practicality of a handbook that can be carried around in your whitecoat and at the sametime, contains enough information that is usually only found in huge reference texts. Not only does it contain management guidelines in easy to read tables and point form, but also contains a lot more information regarding the basic physiology and scientific evidence if you care to read the appropriate sections. The downside to this is that it appears less readable when you compare it to its main "competitor", the oxford handbook series, but there again, they serve very different needs. For the non-specialist who needs a three second reference, especially someone who works in Britain, I would get the oxford handbook. If you are a nephrologist/dialysis nurse in training, you will inevitably go back to the handbook of dialysis, sooner or later.

"The Handbook of Dialysis" is a must have for anyone who is a patient on dialysis or who is the caretaker of someone on dialysis. This book is written with a Nephrologist or Nephrology nurse in mind, but patients and caretakers can learn a great deal as well. It explains the whole dialysis process including reuse, vascular accesses, anticoagulation, nutrition, infections, sleep disorder, etc. The dialysis process affects one's whole system.

I highly recommend it for anyone who needs a book that is very readable and covers the topics necessary without using terminology that is too technical and complicated to understand.

I used this book at a study guide for the nursing certification test in 2000. I passed with flying colors. It is comprhensive and to the point. There wasn't a subject in the test that was not covered in this book as well. This book is a much easier read than the ANNA curriculum. If you are looking to study for the CNN or CDN then look no further.

My husband began dialysis over a year ago and it's been a constant search to find useful information--finally found it. This book is an absolute essential tool for those who are serious about dealing with their problem. It is not to be confused with a cookbook but is a wealth of information on almost all foods. Not much missing. Worth it's weight in gold to us. As a side note--the staff at his center were unaware of it and are now looking in to purchasing a number of them!!!

No matter how successful one's life is, there is always the threat of disease. "That Damn Dialysis" follows Cledus B. Washington as his life goes from having everything he wanted to rock bottom after he discovers he is suffering from chronic kidney disease. Told with a light heart, "That Damn Dialysis" is a story many sufferers of the disease will relate to. Informing as it entertains, "That Damn Dialysis" is a top pick especially recommended for anyone with kidney disease, their loved ones, and for community library fiction collections.

Great book... I was so interested in what was going to happen next that I read it in 2 days! A relative was diagnosed with chhronic kidney disease and will inevitably end up on dialysis. This was the perfect book to gain insight on what could be expected, what information should be received from the doctors, what questions should be asked of them and what goes through the mind of someone faced with this lifechanging condition. Before reading this, I couldn't imagine someone writing such a journey with such humor, but here it is! I hope all is well with Mr. Washington...

That Damn Dialysis is definitely on it's way to the best-seller list! It is a 'must-read' book for anyone suffering with any chronic illness (not just kidney failure). I found this 'medical-novel' to be hilariously educational. I couldn't put it down! Cledus B. Washington is the main character of the book -- however, my favorite character is Ms. Irene. She's a hoot! I recommend it HIGHLY!

I purchased this book based on a review I read on the internet. It was more assuring because it is written by a doctor who is on dialysis and his wife. It helped put me at ease about the whole process. It gives info on the various types of dialysis & tells why he chose the type he uses without making one feel that is the only way to go.

Author Dr. Daniel Offer has had over seven years on dialysis along with a career as a psychiatrist, so he's in the perfect position professionally and personally to discuss coping methods and hardships associated with dialysis. His wife and daughter co-author the book, bringing their own experiences as family members: the result is a collection of personal and medical revelations not only from the author and his family, but from other veteran patients, staff and doctors on how to understand and cope with dialysis. It's an excellent general-interest survey any medical and public lending library should have.

this book, which is essentially a family project, is based on, and speaks to, the experiences of the patient [a fairly prominent psychiatrist], his wife, and his daughter. it provides input from parties interviewed by the daughter - patients and professionals involved with patients - and moves right into the guts of the issue. without in any way whitewashing the traumatic effects of learning that your kidneys have failed, and what is required for you to stay alive, it feeds the reader hope that with proper education and control life does not have to come to a stop. it explains clearly and fully what the condition and the treatment are all about, what choices and resources are available, and what reactions - physical and psychological - a patient can expect to experience. language is everyday english, but content is comprehensive and in-depth. readers at the professional level gain a deeper understanding of what their patients and the patients' families are experiencing. patients and families can be helped to feel less frightened by the changes that occur from time to time after dialysis sessions. the book stresses the importance of asking questions and states repeatedly that the patient him/herself must become part of the treatment team.

As you read this text it becomes apparent that it was written by an in-the-trenches clinical pharmacist. It focuses on the practical application of pharmacokinetics in patient care. The text is very readable, written in an easy to follow style. The tables and illustrations are well presented, providing insight to the topic. There are chapters on aminoglycosides, vancomycin, digoxin, antiarrhythmics, anticonvulsants, cylcosporine, lithium, and theophylline. Each chapter contains practical step-by-step examples for both initial dosage determinations and serum level analysis. But you'll need to look elsewhere for pediatric pk information, application to peds is limited.

Undoubtedly one of the best books on Dialysis related complications, written by leading authorities on the subject. The content is appropriately divided into three sections;the first one dealing with proceedure related complications, the second one with patient-related complications and the third one with special situations which contains a chapter on RRT in the intensive care units.Critical care Nephrology is a relatively new area in Nephrology and there are very few books that have devoted an entire chapter to this special area in Nephrology. This section also contains chapters on approach to dialysis in other countries and outcomes. This is a very useful book for all Nephrology Trainees, Internists and Nephrologists and is worth the money spent.

I have found this book to be the best resource so far for creative ideas to motivate dialysis patients. I take basic ideas from this book and embellish them with my own creative juices. My patients and the staff think I'm a little bit crazy but we're having a great deal of fun and most importantly, I'm seeing excellent results in my clinic.
I began at my clinic with less than 30% of my patients with albumins greater than or equal to 3.8%. Within 3 months, that number has increased to 60% and continues to grow. This tells me that not only did my patients learn something, they've been able to integrate their learning into every day life.
My results have gotten the attention of my regional manager who has asked me to speak at a regional meeting about what I've been doing. Even my local kidney foundation has asked to write a story about me for their upcoming newsletter. I attribute much of my success in this clinic to the ideas I've gotten from this book.
You can also buy an accompanying CD to print out color educational puzzles (crossword, word find, word scrambles, tic-tac-toe, etc.). I usually photocopy these if I'm using them for patients. In their printed color format, I have cut them up to use on educational bulletin boards and on an educational game board.
I can't say enough about this wonderful resource, only that I wish there were more like it! A definite must-have for every renal dietitian. An excellent investment in your career!!

Max is a great writer. I'm sure he is a great pastor, husband, father. This book is well written. The reason I gave it one star is because on page 181 there is a 26 word prayer to becaome a Christian. The problem is that Max doesn't mention repentance. I believe that the bible teaches that without repentance there is no forgiveness of sin. Dietrich Bonhoeffer says that cheap grace is the preaching of salvation without the need for repentance...Tell me what you think of..The Palace Theatre

I think this book is amazing. The life of David was one filled with the good the bad and the ugly. Yet through it all he knew exactly who was guiding him. It is an amazing reminder to me that when my life is not exactly as I pictured or had hoped, I have the ultimate father I can turn to for exactly what I need at that moment. Max Lucado spoke to my heart, he reminded me that Christians are not weak and meak. We are warriors for God we stand against Goliath every day and understand our all powerful God will give us authority when we need it, strength when we are weak and moments to dance and laugh. Thanks for this awesome book. My prayer is peace to anyone who reads this book.

We've all heard the story of David... he's the shepherd boy with a killer sling who becomes the hero of Israel after posting the biggest battle upset of all time. It's a great story for the Sunday School crowd... right up there with Noah's ark and Jonah and the great fish.
Leave it to Max Lucado to take this familiar story and show us how to apply it to our lives today. Just as David faced a seemingly undefeatable opponent in Goliath, we all have giants of our own to battle. Whether they come in the form of depression or addictions or financial difficulties, our personal giants taunt and mock us and make us believe that we have no hope of conquering them no matter what we do. Max reminds us that, while we by ourselves may not be able to defeat them, no giant can stand up to the power of God.
Get the book... read it... see why Max says, "Focus on Giants - You Stumble. Focus on God - Your Giants Tumble."

This book sat on my shelf for months. I received it as a Christmas gift, which I had asked for because I am a huge Max Lucado fan. But I had a few giants I wasn't ready to face and I knew he would motivate me to do so. I wish I had read it sooner. The giants would have fallen months ago.
This is a great book to study individually or in a small group setting. The thing I loved most about studying the life of David in this context was the way Mr.Lucado related his situation to own own. So often as Christians, we walk a life that is "One step forward, two steps back" in our faith. He does an excellent job of reminding us to focus on God so that we might move forward.
Just out of curiosity, I read the posts that rate this book as one star. One of the two posters hadn't even read the book and was clearly not a Christian, and the other faluts him for making references that only American readers might understand. Sorry, but I'm pretty sure that is his target audience. Ignore these posts. Buy this book.
