Adequate but outdated review of medical imagining

The second page of my copy of this book states:
Reprinted 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003
This is pretty much the same text published in 1988 (after corrections)
So:
Fuzzy 80's CT scan illustrations
Nothing on fat suppression, or more modern image acquisition sequences in the "Nuclear Magnetic Imaging" chapter
Definitely no mention of harmonic ultrasound
Many anachronistic references to 'future technological improvements'

I am not sure whether the publisher's reluctance to update this book represents apathy or avarice, but the failure to more frequently revise a textbook in such a rapidly changing area relegates this book from serious consideration as a primary textbook.

Some chapters are quite clear and complete (for example X-ray) but overall the writng style is a little obtuse.

In summary- some good chapters but outdated, stylistically hum-drum and superceded by the numerous other texts in this area.

Missed the boat in some important areas

The idea for this text is brilliant--a quick reference for imaging clinical problems in the rapidly changing world of radiology. The book is seriously let down by: 1/ Both a table of contents and chapter header lists that are totally lacking in pagination for specific problems. Unless you have time to flip through and find your problem you have to resort to using the index. An awkward and a downright strange omission. 2/ One of the most vexing issues for clinicians is whether to order newer imaging "with" or "without" contrast. This was the reason I ordered this text. With a few excceptions, this text does not help with this problem. They blithely recommend ording a CT or an MRI and leave it at that.

DONT GET THIS BOOK FOR ORAL BOARDS

Review Date: 2008-12-09
This is not a good book for the oral boards. How many cases of sinonasal cancer, thyroid cancer, and hibernomas are on the boards? Maybe this is a good review for a neuroradiology fellow but its way too in depth for a radiology resident. And I did not think the pictures were that good or classic. The same goes for the spine case review. just stick with the brain case review which is excellent.

Nice collections of cases, great quality pics and good discussion about each disease. But it misses DDx and findings discussion (ok, dr. Yousem has it in a pdf file on his website, but this is not practical). I recommend the case review authors to give a look at Mayo Clinic GI Imaging and Dr. Chew's MSK Teaching Files which are better case books (ok, they're more expensive, but are also more useful).

Useful for getting hold of those difficult to find tips and bits of info not so readily found in reference texts. This book has a friendly style, is quick to use, and as a case review book, gives you a good taste of the spectrum of ENT radiology. It also offers limited but useful references to supplement the short text given for each case.

I mostly agree with F. David Doty's review. The book is very limited in scope, teaches primitive concepts, and does not offer much practical information. For example, why is the S-parameter so different for actual components used in the lab, than what is predicted theoretically. The topic is well known to engineers. Why isn't this in the book? The book should teach what is practical, what is likely to be observed in the laboratory. Not just a bunch of equations in a vacuum.

The is a very good book for those wanting to learn how to use and make NMR/MRI probeheads. It assumes a minimum knowledge of electronics and provide numerous illustrations. Since it is directed specifically towards NMR applications, it is immediately applicable. A CD is included with additional programs, but for Windows, Linus and Unix only. I've not yet tried to see what is applicable for OSX.

I'm very satisfied with this book and expect to constantly refer to it in the near future.

A Disappointing Elementary Text on RF Coils for MRI

Review Date: 2006-11-17
This book might be useful as an introduction to the subject of NMR Probeheads for junior-level electrical engineering students (as a supplement to Hoult's book), but it is not likely to be the first choice for many researchers. The professional, published literature is much better, even if it's rather scattered and thus much more expensive (if copyright laws are respected).
The biggest problem with this book is that it is extremely wordy, and it repeats too many simple and obvious observations. Of course, the simple observations, consequences, and solutions are appropriate in the early sections, but they quickly become tiring. It could easily be half as long - perhaps even shorter. Secondly, while the title leads the reader to believe that the scope might be fairly comprehensive, it is actually extremely limited. There is virtually nothing on high resolution liquids or solids probes, and there is nothing of substance on phased arrays, high field coils for large samples, full-wave 3D EM simulations, or linear circuit simulations. The subject of suppressing cable modes is poorly treated, as is the all-important subject of S/N optimization - the E field is basically ignored throughout the book. Thirdly, the treatments of the various coils all spend far too much time on theoretical approximations of the tuning and matching problems under idealized conditions and too little time on the practical details that often make the theoretical approximations of limited value.
If the book is used by its authors (and perhaps some other professors) in the classroom over the next few years, it is certainly conceivable that a second edition could evolve that would be useful to more researchers. Much better introductions to the subject of NMR Probes, by FD Doty, have just appeared on-line in the Encyclopedia of MR, Wiley, 2007. Very useful and current lists of references may be found there. http://mrw.interscience.wiley.com/emrw/9780470034590/home/

Horrible book

This book is riddled with mistakes and misinformation. The CT, PET and NRC guidline sections are particularly weak. It is difficult to trust anything in this book, so I have had to rely on other sources for accurate information and studying for the boards.

Book is great but service sucks

The book is in perfect condition and is everything that they said it would be, but I paid for a specific shipping date to be sure that I would receive it in the amount of time I need it, but the book was received one day late and they gave me some lame excuse as to where the book was and why it was late...plus there was some stupid labeling thing that stated that the book was in stock which apparently means that they have it but it is going to take and extra 1 or 2 days on top of the shipping that you paid for so be ready to wait, but there is nothing on the website that informs the customers about that...I am satisified with the book but not the service and the run around I received from the company!

Great book. Lots of color pictures. Well written. It doesn't have that COLLEGE TEXTBOOK language going on where you feel like a peasant trying to figure out what the usual jargon MEANS.

only downfall is that it, like all college textbooks, is expensive.

Despite the syntax errors, it is cery clear that the author understands his subject matter very well. He presents it very lucidly. One can read books that provide greater detail, but this little book is an absolute treasure. I have been handing them out like candy. Anna K. Chacko MD

This book has set out to educate residents in the performance of simple bone procedures, however, it failed to achieve its goal. Many of the topics covered are also somewhat out of date given the use of MRI. I do not recommend this book for the education of residents.

This is a simple demonstration of the commonly requested emergency and routine interventions done in musculoskeletal radiology.I have not come across a book that cover the interventional musculoskeletal procedures as good and consize as this book. I think the auther made a great effort to put the information in well designed fashion that suits the need of the radiology residents and fellows.there are also many illustrative diagrams that clarify the discription.I recommend this book for all radoilogy residents .

A compact synopsis of the profession and atypical situations
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-26
A well written book for new students or techs who've been out of the trauma loop for a while. Gives complete information on situations that were not taught or encountered in training. Such as a detailed when and why section of patient assessment and a trade drug chart and how it will affect patient cooperation. It also tells you of which type of accident will produce which kind of injury and gives case studies, self-assessment test and answers. The book also covers technical considerations, conversion charts and has positioning and pathology diagrams. But the kicker is it gives you basic patient commands in 5 different languages!! There is much more included that I've probably left out. The only thing that could make this book better is if it had actual photos - but the drawn diagrams are great.
