MRI guide for techs

I am a new MRI tech, learning from scratch and I have spent most of my practical hours without a senior tech to train me. I have found better MRI books to learn from than this one. The layout is all over the place and there are a lot of spelling and I believe translation errors/quirks to this book. Given the price i guess I got what I paid for.

Not the greatest for the beginning MRI tech

I have just graduated x-ray tech school and am employed as an MRI tech (on the job training) at a hospital. This book gave me very little help in the physics of MRI. By now, I know *how to do* MRI, but I am still strugling with *why I am doing* what I am doing. This book did not help at all in that respect. I am sure it has its place, but generally not the easiest to understand book in the world.

I think this is the perfect reference for the technolgist learning MRI. I have taken Mootoo's class, which was excellent. Along with what I learned in class, I make sure I have his book with me during my clinical experience. He has all the positioning, the various coils, and pulse sequences needed for all the different MRI exams....His book is a must for the new MRI technologist.

Excellent book for beginning MRI technologists.

A very basic, beginner approach to MRI scanning. This is the most practical book I have seen. The illustrations are clear and very helpful when learning how to set up scan sequences.
This is the book to have at the console when you begin scanning alone.

This is a good introductory book, but it doesn't explain much of the pathological aspects of radiology. It's mostly for delving you into the basics of radiology. It doesn't analyze each disease entity with the accompanying radiological signs...

WELL-WRITTEN AND BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED

This well-written and beautifully illustrated textbook was designed for medical students. It is comprehensive: with each chapter sectioned into technical, anatomical and pathological sub-headings.
"Clinical Radiology: The Essentials" embraced all aspects of diagnostic and interventional imaging techniques currently in use. It is a general mini-reference text whose aim is to provide students with all the tutorials that they may need during revision.
Still, experienced radiologists would appreciate its concise outlook, which makes it an ideal memory-refreshing tool.

Radiology is enriched by this summarizing book in a more or less satisfying manner. In my opinion, the author has found an average compromise between textbook and atlas of radiological pathology. Although you will find many good figures of typical laesions, it may happen that you have to search for them for a little while, because this book is lacking a conceice content of figures. If one was a bloody beginner in radiology, a more detailed description of normal findings would have been helpful. Nevertheless, if you are interested in reading and looking a couple of time when nothing else is to do that night, you can never be wrong with that book. Moreover, the price is fair in comparison to similar books even appeared at LWW.

I truly recommend this book to every medical student, specially to those doing a rotation in Radiology. The book is marvelously illustrated with hundreds of big and clear photos of every diagnostic imaging modality currently used, showing the most important technical, anatomic and radiologic considerations one must have when ordering and evaluating an imaging study. The book is very clearly written, goes to the point and takes into account almost every clinical situation one is likely to encounter in practice. I could even say it's enjoyable.

I am currently enrolled in my first ultrasound class. I think the writers needs to expand on the subjects. The Key Words section doesn't do a good job of defining the words. I've been searching all over the internet trying to get some clarity. Their are words in this book that cannot be found in other dictionaries. I don't think this is a beginners book.

Dear ALL potential buyers:

Undeniably this is a wonderful book to have. But unfortunately,Amazon does not stock it and you have to purchase it from other book sellers. I randomly chose the first seller on the list who is Superbook dealers (SBD). To my disappointment, I waited for 4 month, ie more than 120 days. The book has not arrived, and yet the money has been debited right from day 1.

I wrote to their customer support twice and they sent me the generic reply twice, explaining there are some confusion about the 'business delivery date', but 4 months!!!! i expect better explanation than this generic email.

So, those of you who are contemplating of purchasing this book, Don't Don't ever consider buying this book from SBD. Because you will not get it.

As to-date, i still haven't received my PAID book.

Her textbook Diagnostic Neuroradiology had made quite an impact when it came out. The only comparable book was that by Ruth Ramsey previously. Since that textbook had been the reference for everybody, a new edition was expected by everybody. This new format comes as a surprise. While it is certainly more exhaustive in scope than her previous book (taht was a bit skimpy on the spine IMHO), the format used does not do too well with me. I have personally never really liked these list-type textbooks. This is of course a good reference for anyone who wants to look up something during daily routine (even if each reference section is somewhat too short) but it cannot really be used to learn the basics of neuroradiology that one neeeds for training. The sometimes lengthy discussions in the book by Taveras are needed in order to approach Neuroradiology as an art. while you probably have to buy this for reference you must also get another textbook.

This isn't a book to introduce pediatric radiology, it's one to learn pediatric radiology. The index is very complete and it's easy to find what you're looking for. This text has all the information that you look for when someone asks you a question about a topic or when reviewing for boards.

Check out an intro text from the library. Buy this one to have an incredible amount of information on hand when you need it.

This book is written in outline format. I personally do not like this style of teaching, as I find it abrupt and disjointed. I really cannot recommend this book as an introductory text, and would pick a much easier read and higher-yield text like Donnelly's Fundamentals of Pediatric Radiology.

Perfect book for the technical minded magnetic resonance fans
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-18
The book discuss several important aspects of magnetic resonance. The findings are presented from the engineer's point of view, but with the accurate knowledge of clinical significance. The illustrations are well selected, demonstrating the basic concepts. Even I could use it to shed light on some relevant problems for my colleagues. It provides a good understanding of some crucial questions on its own.
Steady state sequences and transient state imaging methods have their own chapter. I haven't found such a review on these topics anywhere else yet. Given the importance, since today's cardiovascular imaging widely use steady- and transient state techniques. It also discuss improvements in ultrafast imaging. After reading Haacke's, it was really refreshing to think it through again from another point of view.
Let me tell you, that my home institution has a GE magnet, but I still like this book. One of my all-time favorites.
I'll surely by the next edition.

Not for the clinician, radiologist, or beginner MRI engineer. I agree with previous reviewer that the book resembles a set of notes, but they are excellent notes if you already know your MRI physics. The book is therefore nice to have for an overview, or reminder of a particular application (the preface *does* say "not meant for making a first acquaintance with MRI"). The images are quite acceptable (3rd ed) and well-chosen to demonstrate the ideas. Not 5 stars because the notes *are* too brief sometimes (another reviewer said shallow), making it impossible to fully understand, let alone implement, SENSE or Shinnar-LeRoux, for example, from just these notes.

Poor images,Poor Graphics and shallow content! This book is not for any proffessional in the field of clinical MRI. I can say that this book is just a collection of short notes designed for Philips engineers. The price (almost $80) of this book does not match the quality of content, the quality of images and the graphics as well ( hand drawing & illustration). If you are philips engineer think twice before you buy this book otherwise think 100 times to buy it for 80 $.

The layout of the book may be appealing, and the graphics & charts too, but the contents are the reason I bought this book. I found many inconsistancies in the review question section where the answer key completely contradicts the text of the book. I also came across similar mistakes on the diskette. I am disappointed in the WB Saunders Company that they can publish a book of such importance which is unreliable and therefore useless.

This book is very small and very expensive. It takes about 2 hours to read. It seems to be directed only at cardiologists who are extremely novice at coronary CTA. I would definitely not recommend it if you are a radiologist or a cardiologist who has seen a CTA before. The majority of the book is spent poorly discussing the background of how CT works, etc. The actual discussion on how best to interpret coronary CTA is very poor. There are a lot of references in the book to unpublished communications from apparently self-proclaimed experts on CTA. The back cover of the book claims it would be also useful as a reference tool, but I honestly do not know what you could possible gain from this.

A Radiologist Review

Review Date: 2008-03-05
If you are a cardiologist wanting to learn about cardiac MRI, this is a very readable yet comprehensive book. The accompanying DVD has PowerPoint presentations corresponding with each chapter, which could be very helpful for a residency program. The examples given come with case histories and relevant clinical data.

This book is also ideal for technologists. The early chapters have detailed explanations of how to acquire the appropriate planes and examples of how they trace the myocardium for post-processing.

The only drawback might be for the radiologist. The purpose of the book is not to comprehensively define cardiac disease processes but to illustrate the usefulness and method of cardiac mri.

confusing organization
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-27
Dr. Doyle's chapters are OK. Dr. Biederman's chapters are confusing and incomplete. They're are not clearly organized in sections, many concepts are introduced without explanation. Numerous typos throughout the book. The DVD consists of PPT presentations.

Again, dr. Biederman's PPTs are confusing and slides are presented in no particular order. Some slides consist of only images and movies with no annotations or arrows at all, leaving the reader absolutely lost. Some slides have up to 8 heavy mpeg movies making it difficult for Powerpoint to read directly from the DVD drive.

At chapter 9 the author describes a case in which the diagnosis of multiple aneurysms was only possible using surface rendered endoluminal fly-through views and not on convetional imaging methods (?!!).

In summary, the contents of the book are not well organized and there is no didactics at all making some subjects a challenge even for experienced readers. The only useful cardiac MRI book I've found so far is Bogaert's Clinical Cardiac MRI.
