This book covered MOST of the subject material fairly well in preparation for the ARRT Quality Management Exam. However, if you plan on sitting for this exam, you will need to rely on Jeffrey Papp's "Quality Management in the Imaging Sciences" to guarantee that you pass. (Unfortunately, Andrea Trigg Stevens attempt does not cover ALL of the material in detail, as the author does not include: QM procedures for CR and DR, dry (LASER) processors, and imaging and diagnostic monitor viewing quality testing, or even mention manufacturer-specific QC protocols and equipment testing protocols for all modalities.)

Most would probably find this book boring. I rather liked it. It is a good mixture of basic radiation physics mixed with discussions of treatment modalities for a variety of tumors. The author list is impressive with all the top people in ocular oncology (many european) writing the various chapters. And of course, as it is with most oncology texts, you don't REALLLLY find out the authors' treatment protocols and decision tree, but this book contains more detail than many others. There also chapters on diagnostic testing, imaging, and other things. The books introduction is actually one of the best I have read and I found Dr. Finger's chapter on plaque radiotherapy to be one of the better book chapters on that subject. I highly recommend this book.

I have just finished my Radiobiology & Protection class; and after a grueling semester, I have found that the Statkiewicz's book is disorganized and confusing. The author tends to hop around topics, for example: it says "see chapter 7 for more information", when you are trying to understand material from chapter 6. I was also using Radiologic Science for Technologists: Physics, Biology, and Protection (Radiologic Science for Technologists: Phys, Biol & Protectio) in another class, but Bushong's book also contains similiar and MUCH more organized and in-depth detailed pertinent information compartively. Bushong presented the same concepts in a more outlined format along with easy-to-read charts and tables. Some of Bushong's information does get into too much depth (no complaints there). After going through his book after Statkiewicz's, I felt like the material made a lot more sense. The only pro to using Statkiewicz is that she writes more indepth stories about the different radiation accidents.

I found this book to be essential for all the info I needed for radiation protection. It's not only well-written but quite complete. It also served as a wonderful reference for studying for the ARRT exam. Another great reference for the ARRT exam, is:
*The Ultimate Study Guide for the Registry Examination in Radiography: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi, Volume 1, 2 and 3*
This book had great questions that were a definite help for passing the ARRT exam. You can't go wrong with *Radiation Protection in Medical Radiography* and with Leonardi's book.

Worst written and most confusing text book ever

I find this book very confusing, I am a student starting my 2nd year of radiology and this is the first time this book has been used by my college, and hopefully in the future they will find a better book. One of my assignments for class is to define all the key terms at the beginning of each chapter, and they are a joke. Starting in chapter 3 there are 2 key terms Dose equivalent and Equivalent dose you look up the definition for dose equivalent and after reading and defining the term it says, dose equivalent is now called equivalent dose. I think this is very confusing. I have seen several things like this already in this book and have only made it to chapter 3, I will be crazy by the time I get through this book and feel for anyone else that has to use this book.

I am a first-year Radiology resident that was looking for an introductory book that was easy to finish on my first Body CT rotation. The Fundamentals book was a good text with all the necessary info to build upon. The only negative thing I have to say is that the quality of the binding was terrible. After about a week the binding fell apart so that now the final 150+ pages are no longer bound to the book. I'm pretty finiky about books and take care of them, so it's pretty disappointing. Otherwise, its a good first text.

This is a great book with excellent information on body CT imaging.

The reason I give it three stars instead of five is that it's basically an excerpt from the main text of Fundamentals of Diagnostic Radiology.
If you already own that book, don't buy this one.

Otherwise, I highly recommend it.

This is not the most thorough cross sectional atlas available. However, the smaller size of this book compared to other anatomy references is a bonus. This book's portable size makes it easily available when needed. Has nice MRI pics that are very useful when reading studies. It is still useful to have a larger atlas available when on call, but this one works for most studies. Good value.

Excellent atlas

Review Date: 2005-08-22
This atlas is the best imaging atlas I have encountered to date in a price range suitable for medical students. The illustrations are of superb quality, and cover a wide range of images, including CT scans, MRIs, angiograms, etc. The only real limitation of the atlas is that it does not cover any pathological anatomy. We have used the Barrett atlas for MRIs in the past, but will probably discontinue using it since the Weir text has very similar MRIs. We will continue using the Wicke text, but the Weir text has figures comparable to a fair number of the Wicke figures, in addition to having the best array of MRIs, CT scans, angiograms, etc.

I am a 4th year Radiology Resident at UCSF. I can't believe I spent money on the 3rd edition CD-ROM atlas a couple of years ago. If you are a radiology resident, do not buy this! The image quality is poor, the resolution is awful, the images are too small even if you decrease the screen resolution, and the cross sectional images are worse than the images we acquire with extremely outdated county hospital equipment. The cross sections from the CT brain are acquired in an oblique projection, making them difficult to compare with the images obtained at most hospitals. The MRI images are way outdated. I just pulled up some angio images to go over vascular anatomy for the upcoming oral board exam and these images are awful! No celiac axis, no detailed pelvic vasculature. I am angry and embarrassed that I spent $80 on this. Fortunately, my book stipend paid for it. I don't want you to make the same mistake. You should expect better quality images for such an expensive atlas.

This book starts with a great foundation, but sadly does very little beyond that. This edition, like the 9th, does provide useful material, even if it is recycled. But, it does little to capture the attention of the reader and hold it throughout the text. Readers of 8th and earlier editions will be disappointed at the readability. Beginners might be better served by passing over this text and trying to bribe someone into selling their 8th edition. The last by Marriott himself, standing the test of time!

Unfortunately we lost Dr. Merroitt. G. Wagner has stepped up and authored the ninth edition of Practical electrocardiography. The book hits the basics - THere are a plethorea of books addressing the basics. Historically I would turn to Marriott (or Leo Schameroff - no longer in print) for help with the in depth analysis. The 9th edition falls short - giving narrative examples and referrencing non existent ecg strips - This book is missing several examples of ECG tracings and is a sad tribute to a great electrocardiographer, may he rest in peace.

Recenty I have gotten this. This is easy to understand ! But I have just found many misprints, particulary there are cases that descriptions may be inconsistent with figures. I hope that these inconsistency would have been corrected in tenth edition.

This book is fantastic.
The only problem is that the whole abdomen review is in one chapter. So, when we have a test on only kidneys I need to go one by one & find only the kidney review questions.
But on a good note, i love that they explain why the answer is "C", for ex.
That's all!

This book will only confuse you.

If you are studying for the RDMS test, don't waste your time studying using this book. If you had a good solid core understanding of ultrasound...you will find this book full of errors...it had too many errors that it was sometimes amusing and frustrating at the same time. This book will only confuse you if you are just at the starting point of your studying process. DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMENDED.

Excellent review for ultrasound physics

This book is a great investment for those preparing for the ARDMS Physics boards. It should be used along with a good physics text (such as Edelman's Understanding Ultasound Physics). Appleton and Lange's study guide provides a good REVIEW of physics; however, there is NOT enough material to study to fully prepare students to sit for the boards. The 500+ questions following the study guide provide the opportunity to APPLY knowledge. Explainations for most questions are offered in the answer section.

Don't waste your money.

This review book was assigned to my senior ultrasound program in our last quarter of classes. A colleague of mine who is a radiologic technologist had used the A&L RT review book and found it helpful, so my expectations when it was assigned were to be able to learn and to have a good array of review questions.

However, this book seems to be a compendium of outdated information rife with typos that would be hilarious if they were not so frequent. I am finding that working through it is about a 75% waste of time. Who edited this?.... Anyone?...... Anyone?

Another problem is that images are labeled wrong, or not labeled (e.g.: "Name the structure with the arrow on example 5-113," and then there is no arrow. Or worse, the arrow clearly, unmistakably points to the aorta and the answer is IVC.).

The OB/GYN chapters are better than the physics and abdomen chapters; the latter have significant errors in them. My biggest problem is that as a whole these questions require very little critical thinking and are not "pitched" at a level commensurate with what I believe the ARDMS registries require (I will update this review after taking my registries in Mar.-April).

And now, for amusement value, some of the misprints:

"posterior urethral values"
for intussusception, "intersuppection"
"pleura effusion" --- and the list goes on.

For review I would recommend the following books:

Physics:

Physical Principles of General and Vascular Ultrasonography, Jim Baun, BA, RVT, RDMS http://www.jimbaun.com/jimbaunjan05_007.htm

Understanding Ultrasound Physics, Sidney Edelman, 2nd Edition

Abdomen:

Exam Preparation for Diagnostic Ultrasound, Sanderson/Dolk/Miner

Abdomen & OB/GYN:

Clinical Guide to Ultrasound, Charlotte Hennigsen.

I bought this book to learn MRI, but the work is more of an encylopedia than a readable textbook. It contains too much useless information, while the important material is not particularly well written, presented, or organized; for example, the first 300 pages of physics is too often impenetrable and consistently overly theoretical, esp. the parts written by PhD's as opposed to MD's. The chapters are inconsistent in quality, varying from poor to very good. Although the book was supposedly printed in 1999, most of the references are 7-8 years old, the most recent being around 1995; this book is hardly state-of-the-art in its field. It is hard to believe that a book this expensive and in its 3rd edition could have so many typographical errors; did anyone proofread this book? The print is very small, the smallest I've ever seen in a top-of-the-line radiology reference work. On the plus side, it is well illustrated and an outline precedes each chapter.
