The book itself has a lot of good information. But if you were ordering it for the CME credits, don't they expired over a year ago. I think they should tell you that in the description. It was a big waste of my time.

Dear Sir / Madam:

I am looking for any text book about RADIOGRAPHIC CRITIQUE except from McQuillen-Martensen and the best Medical Dictionary.

Thank you for sending my previous orders. I am now a Registered Canadian Medical Radiologic Technologist in Canada after successfully passing the CAMRT Exams.

Thank you once again.

Sincerely,

Janette P. Lee

This book is a good reference as well as learning tool. It includes many glossy prints of actual bone density scans with descriptions and instructions for interpretation. It has a good section on identifying artifacts and evaluating the adequacy of the scans. There's not much description of secondary causes of osteoporosis but that information can be obtained elsewhere. In all, a good learning and reference book, esp. for physicians.

This is the single most important resourse that any physician performing DEXA scans should have in his or her library. It is a reference used frequently and is a great review of the state of the art of bone density. Two copies are useful, if the first is misplaced. A must read for physicians starting the bone densitometry business.

I bought this book along with some other coworkers of mine to review our human anatomy for MRI and CT. It has excellent pictures and very detailed descriptions. Easy to learn from and turn the pages without bending book!! I highly recommend to others! Great price as well!

I just completed my first year gross anatomy course and this book was required. The concept is excellent and the plates are amazing but there is one problem, the book has many mistakes. It was very confusing to learn the relationship of structures then turn to the cross-sectional book only to see the same structures mislabeled. If a newer addition is corrected, I would bump this up to a 4-5 star rating.

Great cross-sectional anatomy book for medical professionals

This cross-sectional anatomy book provides a complete and precise look into the anatomic structures seen in the cross-sectional plane. With the use of cadaver sections, illustrations and corresponding diagnostic images the anatomy is displayed with great detail. Also included are explanations and descriptions which enhance the knowledge of the human body and its functions. As an instructor in Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging, I would HIGHLY recommend this book for those wishing to expand their "anatomical knowledge". The sophistication of this book would be ideal even for the most advanced learner in human anatomy.

High Quality Imaging

It was Wednesday, 1pm and I found myself in the paediatric X-ray meeting staring at an abdominal CT scan desperately attempting to relate the collection of black, white and grey shapes to the anatomy I had studied in the dissecting room over a year ago in anticipation of the questioning which was undoubtedly to follow. Cross Sectional Human Anatomy from Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins sets out to enable basic anatomy to be related easily to the cross sectional imaging commonly encountered within clinical settings. It uses the best imaging from the visible human project to present anatomy in a regional format with a chapter devoted to each region. Each chapter begins with a short description of the most important structures found within that region. Individual chapters contain numerous sections at different levels. Each level is given a double page spread, that contains a labelled cryosection with a diagram and short description to aid interpretation and most importantly a corresponding CT and or MR image. In addition, some diagnostic imaging using other methods (plain radiograph or ultrasound) is provided. All of the imaging is of high quality and web links to where the original visible human data can be viewed are provided. This is a useful book, that achieves what it sets out to do, filling the gap between the traditional anatomy book and the imaging atlas. This is a reasonably priced addition to the bookshelf for rapid review of the anatomy learnt in the pre clinical setting within a clinical context.

I got this as a first year and use the appropriate section for the rotation I am on. It is helpful as yet another source of case studies, and the discussion of a differential for each set of images is nice.

Nice review for Orals but should be updated

The Duke Radiology Case Review is organized into 10 sections. Each section has 20 or more cases. Cases are outlined with the relevant clinical history, selected imaging findings, a differential diagnosis, a discussion covering key clinical facts and imaging findings.

Although dated, the material is appropriately presented, clear and concise.

Published in 1998, it is overdue for an update to include imaging findings relevant in other cross sectional studies.

Overall, the book is still high yield and I would recommend this book.

good but expensive, old, easily replaced

Your time for oral board prep should be focused on seeing as many high yield images as possible with the least amount of time and money invested. Though the discussions/cases are good in this book, there are are only 30 cases/10 chapters covered. The book costs about $100. You could buy two to three "case review series" books with the same investment. These books have 200 cases each. Personally i have not found a case book that describes cases as you should on boards- findings, differential diagnosis, most likely diagnosis and additional comments. Wiser choices are available

For the Board Exams

Having recently written the US and Canadian Boards for radiology, and having done umpteen CD roms and teaching files, I found this book to be one of the most organized and focussed in preparing for board discussions. It covers a wide spectrum of cases and gives pointed pertinent positives and negatives when reviewing the differential. Granted, it is not completely comprehensive (but then, there is no single book that is... oh, if only there were) It is not a book that I would start studying with, but, in the end, near the final few weeks, it is a good quick read (1-2 days)to test yourself and pick up some pointers (it is also much cheaper than the course itself!).

Previous Background Required
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-09
A functional background in both physics/math/engineering and imaging are required for getting the maximum benefit out of this book. If this is your first time experiencing either of these fields, you will need a more basic/conceptual book to explain the concepts of MRI before diving into the physics. I say this because the book is not very good at painting mental pictures or physical analogies. Instead, it assumes you already have a mental picture of concepts like k-space and presents the mathematical abstractions to build upon this. However, if you already have a conceptual background in MRI, this book will take you far. In those regards it is quite thorough and will prepare you for a starting career in MRI. Also, I'm assuming a second edition will fill in some missing chapters on recent advances in MRI like parallel imaging. Remember, an undergraduate degree is a must, and a year or two of graduate couldn't hurt.

Our labs most used resource in MRI- period. This book is used to answer any questions we encounter about the mechanics of MRI, plus is used in both MRI courses. The first half of the book focuses on basic principles. The second half develops advanced concepts for the advanced technician. Clearly written, durable, and nice large font.

the most complete book so far
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-09
This is probably the most complete textbook on MRI so far, covering many of the recent topics. The prerequisite is an undergraduate engineering or physics degree, but nothing fancy, the math is completely trivial, and all of the necessary background is included in the book. So it's quite comprehensive in that regard, you won't need to use other books, it's all in there. And if it's not in there, I find the list of references at the end of sections to be excellent. They really refer you to the relevant literature so you don't have to worry about missing important details. I don't give 5 stars for books like this, because I just see it as a decent book. It is not "extraordinary" (5 stars), it is just the best book on MRI out there, but essentially because there are no decent alternative out there that cover such a broad range of topics. I suspect there will be subsequent editions of this book to cover newer topics, but the bulk of the book will remain the same, since it covers mostly very basic topics (a good choice of topics too).

An excellent intro for readers with some math background
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 29 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-01
This book is a welcome introduction for readers who are comfortable with basic differential equations and vector calculus. As an applied mathematician interested in learning the fundamentals of MRI, I had grown quite frustrated with the simplified literature on one hand ("MRI for technologists", "MRI for medical people", "MRI for dummies"...) and the professional literature on the other, which is directed at people already immersed in the study of MR technology. In contrast, this book is an excellent introduction to the subject for applied mathematicians (though this may not have been the intended audience), as it makes no assumptions regarding reader's science background and thus explains thoroughly all relevant E+M, physics and signal processing. But most importantly, it does so without cutting mathematical corners. This results in a far more lucid and logical exposition than books which try to protect the reader for his/her own good.

This book is the bible for radiologic techs and needed in many programs however Amazon was incapable of delivering this book. I waited 12 days for this textbook for my classes and finally contacted customer service to ask them to expedite the shipping because I NEEDED it and they told me they did not even have it in stock. After hearing this I looked on the website to see if they still had it listed and they did saying falsely that it could be sent out in two days. I obviously knew that this was not my case because my order was made 10 days ago and could not be sent out nor could they tell me when!!! I used to rely on amazon for all my book needs but they are no longer the high caliber that I once regarded them as.

I am currently using this book in one of my classes and it is packed full of information. For those of you who have a hard time comprehending what medical books are trying to say, this book is packed full of pictures upon how to position the patient and what the radiograph will look like if you properly positioned. The radiographs also have arrows pointing at different parts of the anatomy. I highly encourage this book to anyone who is trying to learn to be a radiologist or radiographic technician.

Review Date: 2007-10-11
This 3-volume atlas set is great for anyone entering a Radiologic technology program (i.e x-ray techs). There are detailed explanations for positioning a patient, as well as detailed pictures of how the patient is to be positioned. This atlas also includes pictures of radiographs of the part to be imaged, as well as "good" and "bad" examples of radiographs. Each chapter pertains to positioning a different body part, or body area, and gives you a summary list of evaluation criteria for the actual radiograph that was taken. This is a great book to invest in, and is very helpful.

This is a very easy to read book that gives a basic overview of the fundamentals in several areas of radiology. It provided a great quick reference for looking up practical questions in radiology. It was great for the days leading up to the oral exams when I wanted to refresh my memory in certain areas without having to lug around several huge reference texts. I know some people who have it around at teaching sessions and conferences and continually add there own key notes or "pearls" to the text.

This is by far the best book on the market dealing with radiology QA. It is well written, easy to follow, and give the current criteria.

The major weakness of this book is that it claims to be about "Quality Management" but it is not. The one and only chapter on this is almost worse than none at all. If the book was retitled "Quality Assurance in the Imaging Science", I would give it five stars.

The second ed. of the Workbook is much improved. It follows the 9th ed. of Merrill's Atlas with all the standardized anatomy and updates. The excercises are very thorough and students can learn anatomy and positioning with ease using this Workbook. The combination of using Merrill's Atlas with this Workbook is a winning combination for any radiography student. An individual who has been out of the professsion for years and returning can easily re-learn positioning using Merrill's and this Workbook.
