Excellent book. Most of the more common protocols are in here, with sector images and simplified explanatory drawings of each one. Detailed description of all aspects of how to obtain good images as well as patient prep etc. I've seen even the most experienced tech refer to it on many occasions.

The book is excellent for students and beginners in the field of ultrasound. The information provided is optimal for self-practice and improvement your practical skills as well as theoretical. The only one issue concerning the book is the date of last edition (1999). However, how much it changed? Anyway, I recommend this book to those who are about to start ultrasound scanning.

I am so thankful that I was finally able to get this book. I have attended seminars by one of the authors and spent some time at Henry Ford Hospital with her ( in a teaching situation). I respect her and her work.
I have always wanted her book and am happy to finally have it.
I have not hard time to read through the book but knowing how organized her seminars were, I know it will be organized and to the point. I needed a reference book as I am RVT and this will fit the bill for me.

This paperback, which is only available in paperback, is outstanding for both passing the registry exam and grasping virtually all you need to know as a vascular sonographer.
It is easy to read, simple but not simplistic, good continuity, accurate, and a great deal of it's contents seem to be on the registry exam very much like it appears in the book.
It should be kept in mind that it is inherently not a reference book (it is not intended to be) so if you are seeking detailed comprehensive explanations, you probably won't find it here. For that you will need a supplemental text (I prefer Zwiebel & Pellerito, Fifth Ed. for that purpose). The one big negative about "Vascular Technology" is that it has just about the WORST
binding ever. Pages literally fall out!

I bought this book because I had heard of Budoff and ended up completing the course offered by Rumberger. The book was thorough yet concise, easy to read yet containing complicated subject matter. My friend bought a different CT book and he ended up reading mine becuase he liked it better. Definately would recommend the book. The book will also help you fly through Level II training.

Great book for learning ultrasonographers

As a starting EM intern with little practical ultrasound experience, I found this book to be very good for orienting myself internally. The images are high quality, including lots of wrong probe placement shots that I can identify with! It is geared towards the novice ultrasonographer, however, and I think I will need to rely on other sources to pick up some of the finer points. But overall, I think this has improved my technique, and made me more comfortable identifying what I'm looking at in the ED.

great book - gets you up and running really quickly

i'm a msiv who's been learning em ultrasound, and this book has been great for getting me up and running. the amt of text is kept to the necessary points- the focus is on color diagrams of where and how to orient the probe and what u/s images you get as a result (the images are great btw - if only i could get such great pics!). protocols for each scan/video recording are written in list form. significant sections are also dedicated to troubleshooting - illustrating, again with paired diagrams/images, when you're too caudal/too deep/etc. i'm all about high-yield, and this book fits that bill perfectly. def recommend.

If you are experienced in ultrasound, not worth it.

I am a sonographer with just a year of experience. This book is just scanning protocols which is really geared towards ultrasound students. The title is very misleading because it is not specific to ER ultrasound at all. I thought they may discuss specific cases like appendicitis, gallstones, whatever, but this is just basic exam protocols with no pathology. I would not reccommend it for people with ultrasound experience.

Dr. Felix Chew and Dr. Catherine Roberts have put together a compendium of 350 musculoskeletal cases that will give you the confidence that you need to apply what you have learned in daily practice. Organized by anatomic location, a variety of cases are present with clear pictures, a clear and concise description of imaging findings, a reasonable differential diagnosis, and an excellent discussion. Additionally, the appendix organizes cases by modality and pathophysiology.

Topics are diverse and not repetetive. I highly recommend this title for your library.

This book will benefit both seasoned radiologists as well as residents preparing for the boards.

This book is organized by body part, so that you can flip between the pages to decipher between entities, which I found extremely helpful. An introductory textbook on medical ultrasound
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 22 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-18
I actually came across Professor Kremkau's textbook accidentally, when I was looking for some not too dated text on the physics of medical ultrasound. Although it was obviously aimed at a practicing ultrasonographer preparing for some ARDMS or ARRT exam rather than a physicist trying to brush up his knowledge of medical ultrasound, it proved to be a valuable source of relatively recent information on the current state of the area.

The textbook starts with an overview of the basic physics of waves and ultrasound, proceeds to the transducers and beam shape, and continues to the computer technology used for imaging. Next comes a chapter on the Doppler effect, being followed by a discussion on spectral analysis. A synthesis of these two techniques is the color Doppler imaging, and an entire chapter is devoted on the recent techniques like Color Doppler and Color Power Doppler. The textbook is concluded by a chapter discussing the artifacts, and finally a chapter on performance and safety.

The style is highly readable, although the text is somewhat repetitive. One striking observation - for a physicist at least - is that professor Kremkau denies the efforts spent in inventing a readable representation of mathematical relations over the past 500 years or so, and has invented his own system. So instead of the usual "wavelength equals propagation speed divided by frequency" written in mathematical symbols, we see frames like "frequency UP, wavelength DOWN" throughout the book. Strange, and probably not particularly efficient.

Each chapter is accompanied by a list of over 100 questions, and the answers are provided at the end of the book after the summary chapter. Each chapter also contains a small handy glossary. The book is lavishly illustrated and has a useful index, while the list of references is not particularly impressive.

I found this book very understandable and easy in the sense that it describes most of the physical principles in detail and with equation which some other authors lack. Though it's not so easy to read at once or showing not only definations but also descriptions of topics which makes it more to understand instead of just memorizing the things and that is the most important thing I found in it

First, a confusing omission on p118, eqn: 4.28.
The transverse component should be defined first as:
Mx'y' = Mx' + i My' = ...
This omission may be confusing when the previous chapter is not read before this one, as the definition of Mx'y' is not defined earlier in this chapter.

p.123 eqn: 4.43,
Mxy should be labeled Mx'y', Mx and My should be Mx' and My'
There should be an equals sign after defining Mx(w,(t1+t2)+) + iMy(w,(t1+t2)+)

The selection of the chapters and the overall coverage of this book are excellent. It provides an outstanding and detailed description of MR physics and of how MR signals are generated and processed. However, not being an engineer or a physicist but a MD interested in MRI, I had some problems with the mathematical background required to understand the formulas used in this book. I feel that the book would be greatly improved if a more detailed explanation to the mathematics were given. At this point, I would recommend this book to graduate students or Ph.D.'s in physics, in biomedical or in electrical engineering, who want to understand in detail the principles of MR signal generation and processing. Because of the somewhat complicated mathematics, the book might be somewhat less destined, but still of interest, to radiologists and MRI physicians who, like me, want to enhance their understanding of MR physics and signal processing.

Excellent coverage of MR physics, however complicated maths.

Magnetic resonance has recently recieved many riches in the form of excellent, definitive texts that have bundled together the advances of the last 20 or so years. Drs. Liang and Lauterbur have added to this trove by writing a text that goes beyond the standard descriptions of magnetic resonance image formation and including many advanced techniques available today, some of which they originated. The ideal audience for this text includes scientists, engineers, and physicians actively developing MRI applications from the physics on up. Though containing many recent developments it contains a core of medical imaging information that will not be outdated. The mathematical depth is sufficient to serve as a reference of basic and sophisticated methods but with enough pedagogical information to tutor the interested student. Liang and Lauterbur should be on the shelf of any serious professional or insightful student.

I am an old nurse stuck in my ways, so I found this reference a bit difficult to use at first. All tests are in alphabetical order instead of being divided by type, but that actually is an advantage I suppose. There are a couple great cross references - one in the beginning where you can look up common disorders and it lists what tests are recommended (NICE!) and of course the index in the back where it also lists the common abbreviations and tells you what the actual name of the test is/ where to find it etc. Great book, up to date, easy to understand, complex enough to explain what the test is for, how it works, how to collect, what the results mean, teaching recommendations, consideration etc. Just wish I had gotten it in hardcover....

Auseful tool to find normal values and aceptable levels of every element of body fluids. Abrief desciption of each test is followed by lists of medical conditions that may influence the result. The design of professional considerations add more value to this book, since abnormal results not necessarily reflect abnormal medical conditions, they may as well come from various mistakes when preparing or handling the test, or influenced by the patient's previous medications. The text is well organized with plain English. A very useful book that I'd like to recommend it to every medical student.

I've taught nursing for the past 22 years and this is by far the best lab book I've ever used. At first glance it may appear intimidating, but it is very user friendly. The first few pages are medical diagnoses and their common labs with the most critical few astericked. The majority of the text is alphabetized by lab name and includes not only the values, but panic values, highlighted boxes for signs and symptoms of toxicities and treatments for each, and an extensive list of causes for high and low levels. There is much more to this text, but these are the qualities I love most. If you want to prevent patient's problems or at least identify them early, this text is a must and it will make you look like a genius in the process! I won't leave home without it.

the most important part of echocardiography is the accompanying report. no amount of color photos and doppler tracings can compensate for a poorly written report. reports have to be written disease wise from management and prognosis point of views. different diseases merit different reports. this book is all about how to write correlative and interpretative reports for varying cardiac conditions. thus anyone wishing to master this art of reporting, this small book is a must.

Okay, I'm the author. In all these years no one has ever put a review up here, so I'm going to do it.

This is a guide to scanning the vascular system with ultrasound. It was meant to be a vascular-sonography version of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Volkswagen Repair, or the Pete Seeger banjo book: easy to read and make sense of, and practical. It takes the reader step-by-step through protocols for scanning first carotid arteries, then lower-extremity veins, LE arteries, upper extremities, and the abdomen (though that chapter is necessarily only introductory, since that's an especially complex area). In other words, rather than theory and interpretation, this book is about how to push the probe around and get the images and Doppler--very concrete.

My feedback on this book has always been positive: people tell me that they have been able to learn the techniques with a minimum of grief.

So what the hey, I'm giving myself five stars. Excuse my towering immodesty.

Don

(P.S.: By the way, you ARDMS registry people, this is good for 16 ARDMS-approved units.)

I understand the vascular system & I learned how to scan (pretty much on my own) thanks to his book. Very helpful. Great humor. I hope Donald Ridgway writes a guide for abdominal & ob/gyn scanning in the near future.
