not the best introductory text

It's not a stellar member of the essentials series.
I only read the first three or four chapters. There are many typographical errors and factual inconsistencies in the material that I read. I thought that by the third edition things like this would be ironed out. Hopefully by the 4th ed they'll get fixed.

Dogmatic

Overall, this is the best book of its type, but I was hoping for a more balanced look at the practice of nuclear medicine. The authors present their methods, based on their research, but do not give enough consideration to the work done by other researchers, specifically in the area of hepatobiliary scintigraphy. Still, this I like this book better than Metzger's and Palmer's.

Excellent text for nukes

This is a great textbook for resident level study in nuclear medicine, and the first book I'd use for an introduction. It's concise, with excellent diagrams and pictures of scintograms, and it presents the physics and chemistry behind nuclear med, as well as clinical correlations and the actual technology itself (gamma cameras, collimator's, etc.). Although there are definitely more detailed (and much, much, longer and more expensive) texts out there, this is where to begin a study of nukes, and it can easily be encompassed within the scope of a one month rotation.

This is a new edition. Compared to Mettler this probably has a greater range of coverage. Both books are very good. Supplement with PET books like PET/CT: A Case-based Approach by Conti (this may be too expensive for a resident) or PET and PET/CT: A Clinical Guide by Lin (less expensive).

It was well worth the price. A very valuable aid in studying for the Mammography Registry, it gave me an idea of the areas I needed to study more. Each answer has a detailed explanation. I can now go in to the Registry feeling prepared.

I bought this book to prepare for my mammo boards, knowing the radiography one had some errors but the amount of errors in this one is ridiculous. I am looking to find another book so that I dont fail my boards. If you do get it double check your answers and dont rely on the practice test answers because they are wrong 50% of the time!!!!

Excellent!

I purchased this review book and studied it along with the ACR. Most of the information in the book was on the registry except it lacked pathology and there were a few errors when you took the practice tests in the book. You really had to make sure you reviewed the answers. I got a 90 a my mammo registry!! I highly recommend this book!! I was a self study and was not able to attend any conferences so my information came from this book and the ACR.

I thought this book was going to be comprehensive. Instead, it seems at times superficial and outdated. I will give an example: The book claims that total T4, FTI, total T3, and TSH are the most useful tests for hyperthyroidism. You must be kidding? What about Free T4? You think total T3 is more important than free T3 in determining thyroxicosis that has a normal free T4? Frankly, I have no faith in this book. Maybe this is enough information for a nurse, but if you are a physician, look some place else. Don't make decisions based on some statements in this book because you'll be sorry. I'll be looking for a better book on lab tests!

I started using Fischbach in Nursing School and was re-acquainted with it when I joined the Air Force. I have never found anything at all close to the quality of the content. I had a copy at the hospital until someone else recognized the quality of it for themselves. So I immediatly went out and bought another. I'm afraid I need another one at work. I don't mind everyone liking them. I just don't care to be the sole supplier to the world. I guess I will have to chain it to the inside of my locker.

That's a great book to be read over the residency. It does not substitute the classical ones but adds a lot (updated e comprehensive).

As a healthcare IT Systems integrator, I found this book to be an excellent overview of the concepts, terminology, workflow and standards involved in PACS & RIS.

It is readable, illustrated and understadnable. It does not drone on in esoteric concepte, but addresses PACS in practical, relevant ways.

Excellent all-purpose reference!

Contributing Author's Remarks

Review Date: 2006-01-26
As a contributing author in this book, I wanted to share some of my comments and remarks. I think Editors did a great job soliciting well known experts in their field to contribute in this book (I am probably the least known - hehe). I think this book provides a very comprehensive review of the topic and I recommend this for anyone thinking about implementing radiology IT systems or currently managing radiology IT systems.

One of the items I found missing in the book was discussion on "Reporting". Although the book does discuss voice recognition in detail, but does not address other reporting methods in digital environment and IT issues related to reporting and report delivery.

Information on HIPAA is slightly dated as lot has changed since these chapters were solicited in 2004. I also found some minor editorial errors (that hopefully will be corrected at second printing).

Another big change that has occured since these chapters were written is the introduction of 64 slice MDCT and Dual Source CT scanners. These scanners have created new and unique issues for radiology IT and PACS due to the enormous amount of data generated by these scanners. These scanners have a great impact on storage, connectivity, interpretation and radiology workflow.

Overall an excellent review of issues related to Radiology IT and PACS.

I am a radiologist with an interest computer technology. I have hands-on experience with computing but little formal IT education. I've bought most of the other books on PACS from various authors but liked the first edition of the Dreyer book the best, so I thought I'd give this second edition a try.

This recently released edition has many interesting new topics and considerable updates from the topics cover in the first. It's basically a whole new book. Fortunately they have preserved the easy-to-understand, yet, excellently detailed style from the first edition.

If you're a radiologist, technologist or IT person interested in learning more about radiology IT, I highly recommend this book.

Very skimpy on DICOM, HL7.

Review Date: 2006-05-25
This review is for the second edition.

I think this book would be very useful for a radiologist or clinical applications specialist who wants an overview of issues to consider when undertaking a PACS implementation. However, DICOM seems to be a very important component of any PACS system, as well as HL7 - but both were barely mentioned, except in passing, in this book.

I actually bought the book on the basis of another person's review where he went through each of the chapters he found useful, and one of those chapters was DICOM. He must have had a different version of this book, because I read it from cover to cover and could not find a chapter dedicated to DICOM. The most I found was a small section on pages 190 - 192 (in the image acquisition chapter) which gives a short history of DICOM but no in-depth details. The paragraph on page 425 (the PACS workstation software chapter), where the author provides information about freeware and shareware DICOM image viewing and manipulating software, is useful.

Interestingly, the most information that can be had about HL7 in this book can be found in the voice recognition chapter...hmmmm.

My bottom line is that if you want a decent *overview* of the whole subject of PACS, this book could be useful, but if you're looking for DICOM or HL7 details, look elsewhere (and if you find a good source of info on these subjects, please let me know at garycolwill@hotmail.com - thanks!)

I have recently completed fellowship and have recently taken the cardiology boards.

Over the last year I have used/borrowed the textbooks by Weyman, Feigenbaum, Otto, and have owned the most recent baby Otto.

The Echo Manual is the best single source for a new cardiology fellow and for anyone studying for the Echo boards. The clarity, depth, and breadth in such are small package are not matched by any of the other books. It has excellent diagrams and tables. It does a great job of covering complex topics such as diastology, constriction vs restriction, and congenital heart disease.
The Weyman is out of print. The big Otto is too big for board review. The baby Otto is too simple to be of help to fellows and techs. The Feigenbaum is a good book and it comes with a DVD of examples. However, the Echo Manual simply covers the topics better. It works great as a board-review book and just as great as a reference. If you only have room for one book in your budget, I would recommend this book.

Cons: No DVD. Mayo displays the R and L heart in reverse of everyone else. Text can be dense. Overall, these are minor gripes.

Review Date: 2003-07-28
The new 4th edition of H&N is the true definitive work on head and neck imaging. This is a MASSIVE text that differs drastically from the 3rd edition. Many sections have been re-organized and revamped. There is no question that it aims to be an all-encompassing, reference text. This is not the book for a resident to "read-through" during their H&N rotation. Harnberger's text is perfect for that role. This text should be present in every neuroradiology dept.'s library to be readily available for use as a REFERENCE. There is no question that this is the true heavyweight H&N imaging reference text. Any other text that purports to be is just kidding itself. I can only imagine how this book will be come the 6th and 7th editions. By then, I hope the Editors follow Dr. Resnick's lead and put out a "baby" 1 volume edition of Head and Neck Imaging. Then again, I guess that's what Dr. Harnsberger's book is for.

Review Date: 2004-01-21
I have recently received my book and am thrilled. I have seen it at several pain meetings, but hadn't pulled the trigger on which pain book would give me my most bang for the book (Waldman, Raj, etc.). Image-Guided Spine Intervention is an excellent book and accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do, that is being a "how-to" book with superb imaging. In fact, I have yet to see a book that has more clear images than this book. While there are a few things that are missing in this book (discographic manometry, kyphoplasty-although the book came out just as this was emerging), all in the book is well worth the price. Reading Dr. Petersohn's commentary I wonder if we received the same book. The book is a "how-to" book and therefore is not intended to give clinical algorithms, although I admit it would make it an even more comprehensive book. The authors made the patient positioning understandable by referring to the projection with relation to the patient as opposed to the direction of the x-ray beam, which can be confusing. Perhaps in future editions, both positioning techniques can be given. With cervical transforaminal injections, one does not need a limiting AP projection to make sure one does not have cord or subdural penetration. If you follow their positioning and technique and intentionally hit the superior articular process, then walk a few mm anteriorly, you will necessarily be in the correct position, which is confirmed with contrast. For thoracic facet injections, previous reports including Dreyfuss demonstrate that one needs to start well inferior to the facet joint and angle cephalad in order to enter the coronally oriented thoracic facets. This book describes a technique, which demonstrates that this does not need to be done and that one can take a straight AP approach (proven with a CT injection) and still get the contrast into the entire joint. Dr. Chua's thoracic medial branch anatomy was just published this last year and post-dates this book. I agree there is no reason to give steroid after a facet denervation. The chapter on pharmacology was adequate for all pain practitioners. The book never sets out to be something to study for the boards. The statement "may be appropropriate for radiologists or physiatrists" sounds fairly hostile as well. As for discography, their approach to lumbar discography is reasonable. NASS and ISIS are only GUIDELINES not standards and there is no proof that there is an increased infection rate with single STYLETTED needle discography vs. double needle technique. They do not complain about L5-S1 access, rather that it is more difficult and that double-needle technique is often unnecessary. It makes sense to perform discography with a single needle since the new intradiscal procedures are performed that way. The authors do not list "pseudoarthrosis" as a contraindication to discography, but do list a solid posterolateral bone fusion as one due to lack of access.
I, too, am looking forward to a second edition that may have more clinical algorithms; more interventional techniques and those things that the authors may find have changed or should be improved on. However, I think this book is an excellent first attempt and is a much-needed book no matter who wrote it.

Geat Resource on the Subject.

The Complete OCT Text

Review Date: 2007-02-17
This is an outstanding book to bring the reader up to speed in
virtually all topics related to OCT. Among the greatest strengths of
the book is that almost every chapter is written by one author, something
rare in this era. The chapter on clinical trails may be a
little difficult for those without previous experience in this area,
but both this and chapter 12 do an excellent job outlining how
hypothesis driven research is performed. Similarly, chapters 5-8 are
likely challenging for those without a significant background in
mathematics. However, it is likely that readers from a wide range of
backgrounds will benefit from this book due to its diversity and
detail. This is a great book for both those new to the field as well
as experienced researchers.

An excellent resource for anyone interested in a deeper understanding of OCT
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-07
OCT: Principles and Applications is a cohesive text written by an investigator who understands the field from Maxwell's equations to clinical practice. Readers with a solid electromagnetics background will appreciate the detailed derivations and thorough coverage of OCT theory in Section II, including speckle, noise, common and uncommon variants of OCT, and practical instrument considerations. A comprehensive but brief introduction to basic mathematics and electromagnetics is given in Section I, which serves as an good review for those rusty on basic principles. Readers without a technical background may have difficulty with the equations in Section I and II, fortunately enough descriptive text is provided to enable anyone to follow the substance of derivations. Section III provides valuable information to engineers and physicians alike regarding the advantages and limitations of OCT for a variety of important applications. Typographical errors are a minor distraction. Overall this is an excellent first text for anyone wishing to delve beyond a superficial understanding of OCT, and a strong compliment to other available books on clinical applications and instrumentation developments in OCT.

The book starts out with a basic overview of the science of light and progresses into the more specific working of OCT technology. Almost every potential field where OCT would be used is covered. Section one is particularly good for physicians or anyone with only a biomedical background. I strongly recommend that engineers and physical scientists go through chapters 14 through 18, especially if they want to explore opportunities in an interdisciplinary field such as OCT.

The author has made outstanding contributions to the field of OCT through his conference presentations and journal publications and this book is another such contribution. This is the first book on OCT available written in a classical text book format covering a wide range of topics from the most basic engineering background material to advanced clinical topics. The book is written in a format that is suitable for someone new to the field, useful to those experienced in the field, and suitable as an adjunct for a university course. I highly recommend the book
