This book is essential to the library of any MR lab that has an interest in in vivo MR spectroscopy, especially on the basic science level. The beginner will find a good survey of the scope of topics currently under investigation in the basic science literature. The expert will find this book especially useful in its nuts-and-bolts approach, which translates topics from literature to scanner well. This book is less appropriate for physicians in that it does not present information relevant to today's clinical practice. This book was an invaluable reference throughout my PhD training. Because small-animal and vertical bore magnets frequently have less user-friendly instrumentation and packaged support programming than clinical scanners, a more hands-on understanding of basic in vivo MR and all its components is frequently required.

as an artist and teacher with interests in what the world has to offer, i found this book to contain amazing images that can be used for art and science refrence. this is one of those image books that will forever influence my work and teaching.

I want to start with thanks to authors. I bought this book when I had started to work in angiography department. And than , it became my main practical and theoretical guide. I think that it's very important to access the true , fine detailed and recent tecnical- theoretical data within a short time for an angiographer (a radiologist) . This book gives me all these opportunity.

I have tended to be frustrated with the books available on fMRI, which have all been in the format of edited chapters by an wide array of authors. While that format would seem to have the advantage that the leading experts on a particular area are presenting the material they know best, in effect it causes a disjointed text that is hard to follow.

In contrast, this book was written entirely by a single author who has a style that is clear and easy to follow. I wouldn't say that Buxton's writing is conversational, but he does a good job of making the wide range of topics (both physical and physiological) accessible without using over-simplifications or backing off from the current controversies in the field. Another strength of the book is that he gives considerable treatment to alternative methods (such as perfusion, diffusion and tracer methods) which have been slighted in other texts to include yet another chapter on 3T vs 4T.

This may be a good resource for professionals also - but they'll have to speak for themselves. As an amateur, I found the instrumentation section extremely valuable. It is primarily because of that section that I give the text 5 stars. After plowing through a great many journal papers I eventually found that most of the theory and practice of building an STM had in fact been nicely distilled by Chen. There are some minor mistakes (e.g. discrepencies between the text and some figures), but nothing critical that I could see. A number of disparate but relevant prerequisite topics are addressed in the appendices with moderate success.
If there is a peer or superior alternative to the instrumentation and design aspects of STMs, I would love to hear of it!
