Book Review: By Dr A.K. Banerjee, Consultant Radiologist, Birmingham Heartlands Hospital

Rad Magazine May 2000 "Admirable reference on this ubiquitous disease is recommended reading"

Tuberculosis is a disease as old as civilisation itself. The disease has been subject to much investigation and numerous monographs and articles have been written about tuberculosis over the years. Most of the writing has naturally concentrated on the epidermiology and diagnostic features of the disease as well as, of course, its treatment. The radiology literature has also been voluminous on the subject of tuberculosis, especially so regarding the respiratory manifestations of the disease.

This current volume, however, concentrates on the non-pulmonary aspects of tuberculosis with an emphasis on the diagnostic imaging aspects of this disease.

The book is divided into sections dealing with intracranial tuberculosis, tuberculosis of the bones and joints, tuberculosis of the gastrointestinal system and the genito-urinary tract. There is a section on extra-pulmonary tuberculosis seen in acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome. In addition, there is a section on tuberculosis in the paediatric age group.

The author has amassed a wealth of clinical material and acknowledges the help of doctors in Saudi Arabia and other hospitals from where much of the clinical material has been obtained. The images are of good quality and the chapters are extensively referenced. It is a delight to read the text and the comprehensive reference list makes this an excellent reference guide for the radiologists who encounter this subject.

Nearly all the aspects of non-pulmonary tuberculosis are covered in quite extensive depth and I have found this book a valuable read. I cannot praise this volume highly enough. The author has set out to increase the awareness of the many clinical patterns of non-pulmonary tuberculosis and has succeeded admirably in this task. It is a statuary reminder that the only thing to expect in tuberculosis is the unexpected and this is magnificently illustrated in this monograph.

In my clinical radiological practice in Birmingham, I am often reminded of the protean manifestations of this fairly ubiquitous disease. I would recommend all radiology trainees and consultant radiologists read this textbook. Dr Francis McGuinness and his colleagues should be congratulated on this brilliant addition to radiological literature.

The reference in MRI

Quite simply this is the best textbook on MRI available. The first edition was the first successful attempt to summarize knowledge and applications of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. While the two-book set loks impressive, it is a delight to read. Indeed Dr Edelman's talent for being clear even on difficult subjects is apparent. While it is a multi-author text, he has managed to edit the chapters exellently. Additionall to an in-depth coverage of physics, he has managed to demonstrat the clinical applications of MRI very well as well as keeping the book up-to-date with newer techniques such as diffusion and perfusion MRI. Now it is starting to be slightly dated so we hope a new edition should appear soon.

MRI has emerged as the most beautiful imaging technique. This book offers the enhanced version of MRI, added with the latest information about MRI including HASTE, EPI and fMRI. I recommend this book for all new MRI users and experienced. A good reference to almost everything and something more that used to be irrelevant with MRI. Try breast imaging and trauma. Fast imaging made them possible.

Great overview of the compuational aspects of RTP

This book is a collection of articles written by various specialists in computational radiology. The content is very mathematical and emphasizes formal aspects of radiology rather than actual program code. The most refreshing article in the book is the one by D.S. Andronov, A.E. Kovtanyuk, and I.V. Prokhorov on tomography using the Boltzmann transport equation. The solution of the transport equation, numerically or otherwise, should be the main effort of concentration today. Monte Carlo simulations have for quite some time been used to examine transport problems with the assumption that the solution of the transport problem is too difficult or too computationally intensive. Christoph Borgers' article in the opening pages of the book give credence to the view that the object of interest to computational radiologists should be the numerical solution of the Boltzmann transport equation. Finite elements are one method to approach the transport problem, and these techniques are advocated in the field of optical tomography in the article by Arridge and Schweiger. Pseudocode is given in this article to illustrate the solution of the relevant problems. In this book the reader can gain much insight into the difficult problems facing computational radiologists. The articles are all well written, the breadth is decent for such a short book, and the price is reasonable.

The best book on the subject

This book starts with the technical and theoretical aspects of computed radiology, and then, over several chapters, shows the clinical use and benefits of the technology in actual cases. Image presentation in the print is excellent. A little dated in terms of image acquisition capability and processing techniques.

Excellent reference for Medical Imaging Course
Helpful Votes: 56 out of 57 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-09
I am teaching an Introduction to Medical Imaging Course at the 3rd to 4th year undergraduate level but also including some graduate students at an engineering school. I was looking for an up-to-date review of x-ray computed tomography. This book is it. It surveys the entire topic from historical events to the latest in multi-slice systems. One of the nicest features of the book is the included CD-ROM. It includes all figures used in the book, addition videos of recontruction examples, a case study folder, a multi-slice image (demo) viewer, as well as a demo version of program that calculates patient dose for CT proceedures. These additional tools have made my teaching preparation much easier. I highly recommend this book as a reference for undergraduate and graduate students, medical physicists, and medical students as well as those in the field that need an up-to-date review.

Nice little book, most of the content is very basic to common CT diagnoses. The best part of this book is the introductory chapters to eash modality, esp MRI physics. Recommend for medical students.
