When Mr. Food met with Nicole Johnson, Miss America of 1999 and an international diabetes advocate, a partnership was formed which created "Mr Food's Quick & Easy Diabetic Cooking", a useful diabetic and general health food cookbook. The updated second edition packs in over 150 recipes, hints for eating lighter as a lifestyle change, and portion sizes geared to aid in diabetes control and weight loss. Recipes are very easy, offer streamlined dishes based on pre-made foods as much as possible, and will appeal to any interested in modifying their cooking habits to accommodate diabetic needs.

I just picked up this book at ASPEN Nutrition Week after reading it at the booth for more than 30 minutes. I was choosing between Opara's "Nutrition and Diabetes" and this one, and I felt that Mechanick's book suited my needs more:
It was very easy to look up clinically useful info quickly, but then one could read on about the pathophysiology. Very well-researched and understandable, even for a clinical person like me. I also liked that it did not focus entirely on Diabetes, but also on pre-diabetes and lipid metabolism. Most of the book was written by MDs who practice clinically, which probably explains why it really hits the mark.

The wound-healing chapter by Breit is pretty neat, and it has good pictures showing the different stages and what happens when, and an evidence-based approach to what's out there.
There is a chapter on mitochondria that is surprisingly readable and clarifies a lot of underlying pathophysiology. The chapter on nutrition and hyperglycemia is very much to the point. I'm not going to go through all the chapters here, but there's something for every disease state related to hyperglycemia or insulin resistance and nutrition.

What I liked best was the lipid case study in the back. It really guides you through the decision-making process for the treatment of dyslipidemias.
The book is also very current, so there's all the new data and new concepts about DM and metabolic syndrome in there. I am not sure if it is going to be the "bible" on the topic (that's what the guy in the foreword said), but I found it very useful and quite addictive reading.

If you want a book that has all the current info on metabolic syndrome, diabetes and nutrition, this is probably the best-researched, most readable and most current option.

Out of the Sugar Rut

A dentist gave this to me YEARS ago - like 1984 - and I love this book. They give LOTS of recipes for things with honey and they use usually cream instead of milk. I've found that I can substitute a few things instead of following the recipe to the letter. So I like the flexibility of the cook book.

If you are trying to stay away from sugar and seeking a better way to live - this is the book for you.

Most recipes have whole wheat flour in them too so they have alot of fiber in them.

You can lose weight on these recipes and stay away from the sugar rut!

I'm not diabetic; but my wife is. We got this book recently, and are very pleased. This is not just ingredient substitutions and second-best for diabetics: These recipes are good in their own right, and worth eating no matter what condition your pancreas is in.

Our prime example is "Caesar's Chicken" on page 123: A sauce sweetened with dates, the chicken simmered, then baked. The recipe was fairly quick to make, and excellent!

Also has a good index; and chapters on nutrition, which I can take or leave.

This is a handy little cookbook for those who want to keep sugar to a minimum. Tasty, easy to follow recipes that can be enjoyed by all members of your family.

In addition to deliciously flavorful southern main course dishes the author has also included fabulous appetizers and desserts. Those of us who have found a need to follow a low or no-sugar diet are sure to be pleased with this cookbook.

I also appreciated that the author included a section of sugarfree gift ideas of sauces, blends, and snacks for those of us who have loved ones who would must also limit their intake of sugar.

I've found that this book goes hand in hand with the Sugar Busters diet plan.

This is the best book on Diabetes Type 2 I've read to date. It's well-written while remaining informative. Rosenthal succeeds in teaching us about anatomy, psychology, and medicine in easy-to-read and comprehensive, yet truly interesting text.

The historical background of Diabetes Type 2 is fascinating and answers many questions. She covers everything we *really* need to know and understand about the disease. This book is a must for all women who either have diabetes or suspect that something is wrong with their health. It's not just for diabetics, it's for women!! Bravo!
