Healthy, Convenient, Unique Recipes

Sunset's "Diabetic Cookbook" is a treasure trove of easily understood, helpful information. Its introduction explains the importance of tailoring a diet to fit the indivdual, depending on the person's current health as well as his or her weight, age, and sex. The intro also tells how to use Food Exchange Lists compiled by the American Diabetes Association, read nutrient labels on food packages, and plan meals. This book includes seven generous categories of recipes: Soups, Salads, Meats, Poultry, Seafood, Meatless and Side Dishes. Each recipe has easy-to-follow instructions, a readily spotted ingredients list printed in bold type, and convenient Preparation Time, Cooking Time, Serving Exchanges and Nutrients. But what I really liked about this cookbook is its unique selection of various dishes. This is not just another rehash of frequently seen recipes. Yet its uniqueness does not make "Diabetic Cookbook" impractical. Its recipes use easily available ingredients and equipment commonly found in most kitchens.

Published by the American Diabetes Association, an organization whose mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes, Diabetic Cooking For Seniors is a highly practical, time and effort-saving cookbook. All recipes use five ingredients or less, and the portions are scaled down for seniors rather than the usual immense quantities meant to feed large families. Useful advice, tips, tricks, and techniques help people with arthritis or a fading sense of taste create meals that are nutritious, delicious, and healthy. Nutritional information and official American Diabetes Association exchanges are included for each recipe, and the text is in reasonably large type to make reading easier. Diabetic Cooking For Seniors is a "must" for any independent senior looking for useful and delicious culinary ways to help keep their blood sugar and calorie intake down.

A terrific book, I requested recipes from diabetes associations around the world, others from travels to foreign lands and cooked them in my American kitchen. Nutrients for each recipe are included. I wanted to bring many flavors to a large audience of enthusiastics who are also nutrition buffs. The variety of seasonings, appetizers, soups, salads, vegetables, grains and legumes, fish, casseroles, meats, desserts and fruits, beverages and breads will filll your kitchen with aromas. You can create simple, spectacular, or exotic meals from Europe, the Mediterranean, Middle East, Caribbean, South America, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Africa. And everyone can use Diabetic Cooking from Around the World. Recipes from the book have been selected for their multicultural value for use by teachers and children in the Head Start Programs. You can try them, too.

This book will help middle-age people, diabetics, borderline
diabetics and everyone who wishes to head off pancreatic
problems in old age. The work contains a section on how the
pancreas operates. There is a section which explains the
equivalence of insulin absorption to food absorption. The work
contains many sample menus for breakfast, lunch, supper and
the so-called in-between snacks. In-between snacks are the
danger period so read the snacks section CAREFULLY.

The basic diet consists of milk (preferably fat free), eggs,
orange juice, oatmeal, lettuce, chicken, nuts, turkey and tuna.
The book is an excellent supplement to the personal health library.

My brother-in-law is diabetic, so I look for recipes that lets him enjoy the holiday feast too. This book has some great recipes.
The pumpkin mousse can provide a light finish for the turkey dinner. Indulge guiltlessly in raspberry sauce, lemon chiffon pie, or piƱa colada squares.
The rest of us could benefit from following his eating pattern. He's lost weight and looking great.

I'm really glad I found this book - I've been looking in stores and online forever to find something like this. I'm not obcessive about my diet, but I do enjoy eating healthy stuff, and it's good to know this book was checked by a licenced dietician who knows what she's talking about. You would have a hard time going wrong buying this book.

A Very Nice Book

I became interested in different books on diatetes when my mom was hit with diabetes several years ago. This book was brought to my attention and I have to say it really is helpful. It is chock full of wonderful alternatives to the fatty and sugar filled foods that we eat as a whole, and these recipes are very inviting and delicious. We have main dishes such as 'New England Simmered Beef,' and 'Greek Lamb Kebabs,' just to name a couple. We also have some tempting saladas, grilled foods, soups, drinks and of course desserts. At the end of the book we have some information on the disease and how to live with it and also some tips on buying and stocking food and how to plan meals. All in all this is a very helpful book for anyone learning to live with diabetes. Recommended.

Clear,comprehensive diabetes/diet management
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-23
The first section is all about diabetes and I found it to be clear, comprehensive and very up to date. The book is worth its price just for this section. The book is well organized, well formatted and easy to read. The recipes cover most kinds of food and seem simple to make with most having less than 10 ingredients and 3 instructions. As a physician, I found this to be an excellent resource for my patients and I plan to recommend it first for diabetes and diet education.
