I was disapointed in this cookbook.
It has listed many odd ingredients with no reference as to where to find such odd items, or what they are.
I do not recommend this book for the general public.

A bunch of Splenda recipes

I was looking for creative dessert recipes with wholesome alternatives to sugar. This book just featured Splenda as a sugar substitute in nearly every recipe, and I don't like to use chemical, artificial sugars.

A better book with wholesome low sugar dessert recipes is "Get the Sugar Out" by Ann Louis Gittleman, in which she discusses several wholesome sugar substitutes such as fructose, blackstrap molasses, date "sugar", sucanat, fruits and more. She also provides several dessert recipes featuring these more wholesome forms of sugar.

Cookbook Title is Misleading
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-28
This cookbook is NOT low carb. The editorial statement says that in the book 1 carb equals 15g carbohydrate. Pa-lease, give us all a break, many low carbers do not use more than 20g carb per day...let alone 15g or more per meal.

Low Carb exchanges
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-20
In reference to previous review-any diabetic, who has to watch their simple carb intake to live, knows that 1 carb exchange does equal 15 grams. That's the standard used by anyone, including doctors and dieticians for meal plans. As a diabetic, with a prescribed meal plan from a dietician, I am allowed anywhere from 45-75 grams of carbs for each meal, depending on which one of the three meals I am eating. This of course is also based on height and body weight. 20 grams of carbs per day is not healthy for a prolonged period of time. Best recomendation is moderation of a good mixture of fresh foods.

Recipes for Health:Dibetes:Low Fat, Low Sugar, Carbohydrate
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.

The book's recipes are like what you would find in England, not in the States. Also the carb counts are very high for the main meals. For example "Fish Stuffed Baked Potatoes" has 230 carbs and 1170 calories? Too much for me and I have never heard of this. I did not like the book at all and will be getting rid of it shortly.

I was not impressed with this book. There are a lot of resturants that I have never heard of before and it was not user friendly.

Disappointing Collection
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-25
I love soup cookbooks and have over 30 of them. This collection is published by the American Diabetes Association as part of their Healthy Selects series - oddly, that information is not anywhere on the product page here. "Savory Soups and Salads" is obviously inexpensive, but it's not a particularly good buy overall. Specifically, the cookbook contains surprisingly few soup recipes - 22. The remainder of the book consists of salad, bread, and salad dressing recipes.

The soup recipes that are included, though, are fairly good although basic, including Italian Minestrone, lentil soup, beef stew. In addition, extensive nutritional information is included for each. However, the book is rather skimpy with no pictures and minimal text, barely a notch above those "cookbooks" you can purchase in the grocery store check-out line. Unfortunately, "Savory Soups and Salads" is my first major disappointment from this site.

I purchased this book expecting to read facts and information about the disease - instead, it was doctors writing about situations they experienced with their patients - I had to return it - it was not at all what I wanted. I didn't find it loaded with wisdom.

This is a book of fluffy stories. This is the least helpful or substantative book of any I have read on diabetes. A waste of money for someone with diabetes who is looking for information

ADA Killing Diabetics
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-19
The ADA who published this book have been prescribing a high-carbohydrate diet plan for many, many years & this book just follows along with that. Their diet plan only provides impetus for more & more medications to bring down the blood-glucose levels that are driven up by the high-carb diet.
Does it make any logical sense, since diabetes is an inability of our bodies to process blood glucose, to prescribe a diet rich in the very foods most likely to drive blood glucose up???

Unpleasant experience

Review Date: 2008-03-17
I bought this book and was amazed at the information because it was useless. This man is so full of himself that I couldn't read what he had to say about diabetes. The worse news is I even considered him as a doctor for my husband. I thank the Lord that I didn't follow through with that idea! I had to give him a star because the page wouldn't leave at all, if I hadn't.
