This is an older book that in no way represents the new diets for diabetics. Using the old ADA diet is not a way for most diabetics to prevent high blood sugars or other problems that can happen down the line. The new diets for diabetics using low-carb diets is very important. American people did not get fat eating low carb but did do so eating a diet much like the ADA high carb diets. Even the ADA is in process of preparing a new diet guidline based upon low carb diets and not an exchange program.

I purchased this Diabetes cookbook because first I am a Type 2 Diabetic, secondly I wanted to try and find a cookbook that actually had ideas for breakfast that were healthy, satisfying and most important tasted good.
the recipies in this book along with a sensible diet plan helps me meet my
goals and helps me keep my numbers in a good range. All the recipies are easy to make and taste good too. It would be nice if someone would just
write a breakfast cookbook for diabetics or those who have to watch their
carb intake.

Great ideas, everything generally takes about 45 minutesi ncluding prep and cooking, but I suppose all cooking does! We enjoyed teh 2 different phases... offers good meal plans, would definitely recommend to a diabetic who is interested in cooking and helping their diet.

This book has a wealth of useful information and would be equally useful for people that have had the condition for a period of years or have only just been diagnosed.

The book manages to combine a useful introduction to diabetes (including a lot of information that I personally only discovered the hard way) with more advanced material that would appeal to an individual that wanted to improve their overall diabetic control.

There are some drawbacks: the breadth of the audience addressed by the authors means that some of the early chapters seem overly simplistic; and the book is very much geared to the US ("cups" for dry measure and ounces for wet measure, what are you people thinking?). However the comparative dearth of diabetes literature aimed at the patient and the overall quality of the work means that this is one of the best buys on the market.

I bought this cookbook recently to give to someone just diagnosed with diabetes and spent a good deal of time reading the recipes, myself. It is a good cookbook for anyone who is interested in eating healthy. I copied some of the recipes for my own use. I particularly liked some of the chicken recipes as well as the recipe for black bean soup. Each page of the book is divided into thirds so that you can mix and match different foods as you plan your meals. When you get past that initial barrier of figuring out what is going on with the book, you will like this cookbook tremendously. There is a wealth of information here to make us all healthier eaters.

ADA- You should be ashamed of yourselves. Some of these recipes have over 80 carbs for one serving! This book concentrates on calories more then carbs. Diabetics should count carbs-not calories. Calories do not raise blood sugar- carbs do.

We have been using this book for the last few months and have made some very good recipes and some not as fantastic. I began cooking for my mom who has diabetes since last summer but now that her health has improved she has been doing some of the cooking. What we DO like about this book are the simple, easy recipes. Most just have a few ingredients. It is a vegetarian (vegan) diet cookbook which she has been following for the most part. What I DON'T like is that most of the main dishes and desserts call for tofu which I recently discovered I am allergic to. We DO enjoy the dips and sauces, like the Spinach-Artichoke dip (my mom's favorite) and Pimento Cheese Sauce (which is vegan). All in all we have gleaned a few good recipes from this book but not as many as we had hoped.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The dietician gave me strict instructions about what to eat -- something like two starches and three proteins and one fat for breakfast and on through the day in a similar vein - with little help as to how to translate that code into real-life eating.

This is where The Art of Cooking for the Diabetic came in. This book provided me with straightforward, easy-to-follow advice not only about food exchanges, but also exercise (important for pregnant women) and eating out (very helpful for the working mom).

And the recipes! I found I could still eat pancakes (Leningrad Special Buckwheat Pancakes) and pizza (sausage mini pizzas) and pasta (pasta with tomatoes and chicken) and, of course, dessert (raspberry mousse). My non-diabetic husband did not feel the least bit diet-deprived. In fact, even though my gestational diabetes has now disappeared, we still refer to Cooking for the Diabetic for some favorite dishes.

They have the meal plans, carb counting made so easy, and I could adapt it to my everyday living. Grocery shopping was a breeze. I had the plan in my head and I didn't have to buy special foods! Best LC recipe book I've found yet!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-23
After over 3 and a half years of following a low-carb WOE (way of eating), one thing I have noticed is that low carb cookbooks, on the whole, suck, especially if you're doing Atkins. Recipes regularly contain hard-to-find ingredients (sometimes you have to order them off the Internet), ingredients that are NOT good for a low-carb lifestyle (especially in Induction/the first phase) such as grains, honey, molasses, or specific brand-name low-carb products that 1) are infamous for stalling weight loss in LC dieters and 2) may not even be produced anymore due to the crash of the low-carb craze (it's the companies' own faults if you ask me, but I digress).

Now,about this book...it's awesome. The recipes are simple, with REAL FOOD ingredients that you can find at your local grocery store, there is no dessert section (on Induction/Phase 1, you're better off without sweets), and the author really seems to understand the concept of low-carb as it should be done. Veggies (sooooooo important even on Atkins, contrary to popular legend!) are featured prominently.
The book does seem to have an Atkins slant and some of the recipes as-is are probably not suitable for South Beachers in the later phases, although I don't see why the recipes couldn't be adapted...there are a TON of grilled meat recipes in the book. Sub out low-fat or nonfat cheese and dairy where you see it, and use olive oil or smart balance or something instead of butter (actually many of the recipes call for olive oil), add a side of wholegrain something or the other, and there's South Beach's later phases.

Like it so much, gave to friend

My friend recently started low-carbing and I bought this one for her. She and her hubby really like it, he is really the cook in that household. If I ever get out of Phase I, I plan on buying Phase II.

This is an awesome book for beginning vegetarians (like me) who want healthy recipes without a lot of ingredients. I also like this book because it has recipes for a lot of foods I want to keep eating like french toast. I highly recommend this book. It is also a great way to eat if you want to lose weight. Enhanced with information on diabetes and nutrition by Patricia Berton, The Whole Foods Diabetic Cookbook by Patricia Stevenson and Michael Cook offers an imaginative and diabetically sound approach to using whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruit in a culinary wealthy of meat-free recipes, each designed to help control diabetes naturally. The reader is provided with an informative overview of diabetes and how to control diabetes through diet and exercise, along with an invaluable section on meeting the nutrient needs of the diabetic including fiber in the diet, counting calories, carbs, protein and fat, as the vegetarian diet with respect to minerals and vitamins. Of special interest is the information provided on exchange lists for meal planning, as well as cooking and shopping tips. The delicious, palate pleasing, appetite satisfying recipes range from Strawberry Muffins; Tofu Potato Salad; and Vegetable Fried Rice; to Falafel; Broccoli-Mushroom Casserole; and Apple-Oat Drop Cookies. The Whole Foods Diabetic Cookbook is a strongly recommended addition to the cookbook collection for diabetics.

I am a practicing vegetarian, and purchased this book when my annual tests showed an alarming trend toward borderline pre-diabetes. Even vegetarians can develop unhealthy eating habits adn need to learn better!

I was disappointed in this cookbook, however. This is the kind of cookbook that was popular back in the 80's when American vegetarianism was all about brown rice, whole wheat flour, tofu and tempeh. These are fine and valuable components of a healthy veggie diet, but we've come a long way since in terms of aesthetics and variety.

For example, is it really necessary to make french toast with tofu instead of milk and eggs? Or to add crumbled tofu to potato salad? I have a real problem with those who take a perfectly fine, nutritious and proven food item and make gratuitious additions of tofu and tempeh, just because. And I was very surprised to note that this cookbook does not cover the proper techniques for preparing tofu for cooking, because a truly well-prepared tofu dish can be quite delicious and possess interesting texture.

The techiques and concepts in this book are just too dated and limited to appeal to today's informed cook, vegetarian or otherwise. If you are looking to add vegetarian meals to your diet or to better understand your vegetarian diabetic nutrition, you can do better than this book. I recommend the American Diabetic Association Month of Meals 'Vegetarian Pleasures' for a more up to date, equally nutritional approach.

I turn to this cookbook regularly. Whether I'm cooking for myself, for company, or for a potluck dinner, I can always find something good *and* easy in its pages. The Far East Fried Rice recipe is now my standard (and much-complimented) potluck dish, and several others, including the Easy Lentil Stew, are regulars in my kitchen. Although I was a meat eater and therefore not used to vegetarian cooking when I bought this book, I never found the recipes to call for ingredients I couldn't find at my regular grocery store, or thought that the end products were anything less than delicious. This is more than just a cookbook -- the helpful discussion of nutrition and diabetes at the beginning of the book makes it a good reference, too -- but the recipes are really what makes it special. The cooking directions are brief but thorough and easy to follow. Also, because I am now a vegan, I greatly appreciate the simple and tasty recipes for making alternatives to standard cheese dishes. Whether you are a vegetarian/vegan or not, whether you need to follow a diabetic diet or not, I recommend this cookbook highly.
