I just started cooking for my father who is a diabetic. This cookbook is great. It has a weekly list of ingredients so you can get a weeks worth at one time or you can shop day to day. I also like how it lists the number of starches, sugars, etc. for each recipe. It is a great help to someone who is new to diabetic cooking.Healthy Calendar Diabetic Cooking

I've used this recipe book for 5 weeks, and used the grocery list each time. I love making my grocery shopping trips quick and easy with this cookbook! I am also diabetic, and found that these recipes were low to moderate in carbohydrates, and offered the nutritional information I need. The recipes are also low in sodium and fat, which are other things I watch for. The down-side though, is that though most of the recipes said 25 minutes to prepare, most took 60 minutes (getting on the long side for me). I'd love to see these recipes updated to incorporate time-saving techniques.

I was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 years ago. I have read a number of books on the subject. What I like about this book is that it talks about real food. The dessert recipes are made with real sugar. They are low sugar of course, but a number of the recipes can be fed to company. The book also confirmed something I had recently noticed. If I eat less fat, I can eat more carbohydrates with less effect on my blood sugar. I believe this book would be a great place to start for the newly diagnosed, but it is also a great review book that includes a lot of the newest ideas and theories. In addition, it has the basic understanding that food is good and good food is even better.

I add my recommendation to the earlier one that you can save yourself lots of time and money by just buying this book. I recommend the hard-back version as your copy will get lots of use around the kitchen.
The explanations of the blood sugar problem and corrective methods are logical, simple and complete. The book is very well written and makes pleasant reading.
With the exception of two or three ingredients which you may have to find in a health food store, all others can be found in any grocery store.
All of the recipes thus far tried are simple and delicious.
The meal plans and recipes work without a pervasive feeling of constant hunger, which can be a problem in many other diabetic meal plans.
Following a diagnosis of pre-diabetic blood sugar level, and fortunately buying this book on a dietician's recommendation, along with half a dozen others which I rarely use, I have lost twenty pounds in the first three weeks of owning and using the book, with more coming off daily, with minimal exercise. Exercise naturally accelerates the weight loss.
A useful supplement is "No-fuss Diabetes Recipes for 1 or 2" by Boucher et al, but "The Other Diabetes" can stand alone.
The well known and documented relationship between obesity and diabetes 2 can be quickly attacked using this book.
One of the delicious breakfast recipes, Peach Almond Smoothie, will banish hunger for at least half a day, and is widely variable by substituting other frozen fruits for the peaches.
The recipes present lots of variety to accomodate different tastes.

This is one of the most practical and informative books I've found. It is easy to understand and has useful menus and recipes for the busy life of most people with diabetes or pre diabetes. I do not believe you will be disappointed with this book. Give it a read, you'll be glad you did.

My father has type II diabetes. I bought this book for him, but ended up reading it myself. I am not diabetic, but am at risk of developing it. This book is an interesting read, and has a wondeful meal plan and recipes. I have decided to start eating the way she describes, The Mediterranean way, just because it's a healthy way to live. It's just a bonus for me that it also helps prevent and control "the other diabetes". Get this book....it's fantastic!

I read Dr. Kathleen DesMaison's "Your Last Diet" and followed her program for about 9 months. It changed my life! I lost 30 pounds and I feel so much better, physically and emotionally. I have more energy, self-confidence, inner peace and zest for life. I was well on my way to healing my sugar addiction and was ready to help my children.

Then, I read "Little Sugar Addicts" to help my children. "Little Sugar Addicts" helped me guide my family through the process of healing their sugar addiction. It had everything we needed: easy to follow step-by-step instructions, recipes, ideas for the holidays and inspiring stories from other parents. The transformation of my children was amazing. What's more, Kathleen's program is a lifestyle change, not a quick fix or a bunch of other things to buy. It is economical, simple and it works. Our family has been healed by this book and I highly recommend it.

This book will answer so many questions parent have!

Kathleen DesMaisons first book, Potatoes Not Prozac, changed my life. I went from a completely depressed person well on my way to taking anti-depressants, to a happy, confident person who loves life--all because I changed the way I ate! Since healing my own body and mind I have changed my children's diets with miraculous results.

Before Kathleen's program my kids would whine, scream, hit, be totally out of control, throw tantrums and in general, I didn't like them very much a lot of the time. I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong?!? How could I feel this way about my kids and what could I do about it? No amount of parenting advice or classes could change what was going on with them. Well, after getting myself steady on Kathleen's program I started to look at my kids diet. It took a little time and adjustment, but now by feeding them differently and at consistant times they are mostly fun, loving, compassionate, focused, easy to talk to and the joys I always knew they were. Food was the answer, pure and simple!

Get this book if you've ever had those feelings of helplessness with your kids. It will change your life and your families life!

Little Sugar Addicts is a great book!

I read this book and started doing the program with my kids and I have seem miraculous changes in them. It has been such a blessing. This book is very easy to read and the program is very easy to do. I highly recomend it to all parents.

I am a new fitness competitor, and I had a hard time adjusting to the "off season". I didnt know how to eat, and how to cook! This book has become my staple. I have made soooo many recipes in here and have yet to be disappointed. The fact that she breaks down the macronutrients is wonderful for those of us that need to watch them closely! I even think it would be great for someone who wants to learn about a healthy lifestyle.

I finally picked up both of Laura's cook books and I was especially pleased with the variety in this one. The recipes are generally, full meal types- a combination of both carbs and proteins and, of cource, low in the fat department. So far, I have tried 6 different recipes and all have really impressed me. I also liked the fact that she lists the calorie information on each recipe. Thats helpful in planning my diet- and saves a lot of time looking up calorie counts in books.

I am a female lightweight bodybuilder and fitness enthusiast. I really needed to learn more about low-fat/healthy cooking that my family would enjoy and eat. (I already know how to make the fattening stuff!) This book has wonderful recipes. The cheesecake is so good people don't believe it is low fat, the tuna dip is excellent for parties. I am really enjoying everything I have tried. I thought the use of fat-free products would be bland and not appealing at all, but I was very wrong. The recipes are very tasty. One drawback is that some of the recipes are confusing, ie. the cheesecake ingredient list calls for fat-free yogurt, then recipe states "to add lemon yogurt". So be sure to read the recipe entirely before shopping so you can be clear on what you really need to buy. Also, the nutritional information is not always accurate. (I plugged some of the recipes into a nutritional software program.) But it is a good book with great recipes nonetheless. I am buying it as gifts for all of my friends.

In Dr. Juliano's books, whether we are male or female, (female in this case) we are taught to live healthy lives. As the expression goes, "It takes one to know one." Either sex should carefully read the information in this powerful book. We are all living together with diabetes and must learn from each other. Thank you Dr. Joe!!!

Not just for the guys -an excellent detailed reference book.

While the scope of the book is "for men", I found much of the content was for any diabetic, a man or a woman. The chapters for the men I found created in me an awareness and empathy to these unique results of the disease to the male body.

Interested in researching your disease? Juliano has done a great deal of the work in researching diabetes and application to daily life. This is packed with information based on his personal research.

I plan to keep it as part of my reference library, even if I am a "lady".

Joe Juliano has done the diabetic male community a tremendous service. He has written about the history, treatment, and complications of diabetes in language understandable to the layman. He has given down-to-earth advice on diet, vitamins, exercise, and home blood glucose monitoring that is vital to health maintenance, and he has dealt with subjects not often talked about, like the health of the diabetic foot, male baldness, and erectile dysfunction. Above all he stresses the importance of positive thinking and the necessity for the diabetic, in conjunction with his medical team, to take control of the management of his disease. This is indeed an essential guide to living well for the male diabetic."

Excerpts from a letter from Dr. John P. Cooke, MD., Ph.D., to the author. Dr. Cooke is an Associate Professor of Medicine and is the Director, Section of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine:

...I have to tell you that I learned a great deal. I read your book at one sitting, on a flight today to give a talk in the Midwest. I learned a few things from you which I will begin to incorporate into the care of my diabetic patients, and into my advice to my diabetic father.

I found most touching the passages describing your own struggle with diabetes, and quite compelling your anecdotes regarding friends and patients with diabetes. In your next book, these anecdotes should be increased in frequency throughout the text to improve readability for the lay person.

This book is a tour de force, and I congratulate you. I look forward to the sequel...

Chapter 12 is outstanding. I was transfixed by the description of your personal experience with a severe diabetic complication...

I enjoyed your section on nutrition and dietary supplements. You may wish to expand this section, and perhaps work with a dietician on some suggested menus for diabetic patients.

I enjoyed your chapter on diabetic impotence, and chapter on diabetic feet...

Joe, congratulations on a superb book. I admire your drive to help others with diabetes, and your tenacity to complete this book. Thanks again for allowing me to read it. I will recommend it to my diabetic patients.

John Cooke

Dr. Juliano's book was quite a pleasant surprise for me. This book covers an array of very important diabetic issues that are discused in a very intelligent format. Dr. Juliano is an Endocrinologist and a diabetic himself. This first hand experience from the age of 15 allows Dr. Juliano to share personal knowledge based on his own trial and error. The discussion of new and alternative treatment methods is what makes this book great. Dr. Juliano incorporates traditional western medicine with Nutrition and Acupuncture. By pointing out that Western medicine, Nutrition, and Acupuncture should be used together to improve a condition is a quantum leap for health care. Unfortunately most medical doctors have no understanding of nutrition and proper vitamin/mineral supplementation. This lack of knowledge limits the treatment options medical doctors offer us. It is quite refreshing to read a book by a medical doctor that addresses alternative medicine. This book is a wonderful compilation of the healing arts! Furst's First Good; Could Be Better

Stephen Fursts's mini-autobiography is interesting. As a Type 2 diabetic, he let himself gain weight and decline in health to the point where his neuropathy (loss of feeling in the limbs) allowed a sore on his foot to become infected. Faced with amputation, he made several lifestyle changes and not only kept his foot but lost half his weight and improved his overall health.

The second part of the book is his own commentary interspersed with recipes. The recipes are interesting, though not always appetizing. For instance, his instructions on making diabetic ketchup makes you question of you ever want any kind of ketchup period. He uses things from around the house and supermarket to create these substitutes for dishes he decided he liked but could not eat. What he lacks in style here he makes up for in creativity.

The downsides of the book are few but glaring. In one instance he calls the reality show Survivor as Survival. There are a few of the naggling little mistakes throughout the book and one realizes that Furst probably wrote the book without the help of a ghostwriter but also wonders why the ADA editors didn't do their job completely.

A second edition with more recipes, ana expanded autobiography, and an update to the present (the book was published in 2002) would all take this book from just pretty good to excellent.

A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO LOSE WEIGHT, HAS LOST WEIGHT, OR JUST NEEDS A GOOD CHUCKLE!

A hysterical memoir of growing up as a husky... plump...heavyset...Okay FAT! child, who struggled with weight problems through adulthood, Stephen shares his tips and recipes for how he went from an out-of-control 320 pound person with diabetes, to his lean, mean, low-fat eating machine of 175. (Although he still refuses to wear a Speedo!) A self-help cookbook of epic proportions or actually epic portions, filled with all kinds of tips, anecdotes, it includes everything from real recipes, (like cheesecake, soup, and pasta) to how to get through the holidays without killing yourself instead of your relatives. You've tried everything else, try laughing your way to better health. Key features:

 Inspirational and humorous-tells Stephen Furst's story of overcoming his problems with weight and out-of-control diabetes
 Includes the recipes that helped Stephen lose 150 lbs. and manage his diabetes
 Tips for eating out at restaurants without sabotaging your diet

Stephen Furst has been an actor for the past 23 years, starring in the classic movie comedy Animal House and two multi-award winning television series-St. Elsewhere and Babylon 5. After tipping the scales at 320 lbs. even though he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the age of 17, Stephen found himself in the hospital with the prognosis of a foot amputation. He decided to take charge of his life and dropped to his current weight of 175 pounds-where he has held steady for the last six years.

What a fantastic memoire! I've enjoyed Furst's films for many years and was delighted to discover this book. I've struggled with weight my entire life and it seems like about this time (New Year's) every year I end up searching for another "diet" to follow. This year I get to say "NO" to the diet books and read Furst's book instead. Furst doesn't preach- he only shares his experience, his hope, and his fabulous sense of humor! The book will leave you feeling upbeat and ready to conquer the battle of the bulge using his sensible lifestyle recommendations that can be taylor-made to fit your life. You won't be hungry a moment and a guarantee you'll lose weight following his recommendations. Enjoy!

With recipes from Better Homes & Gardens Diabetic Cookbook, meals can be made considering the needs of a diabetic without 'singling-out' that person with an unusual plate of food. These are delicious meals with the food exchange system used (a list is at the back of the book for making following meal plans easier). Even attractive garnishes are suggested so these recipes can be used to appeal to more than just the palate. Normal ingredients in the pantry or easily purchased at the local grocery store make these meals do-able.This is a practical purchase for any home and a must-have for those with diabetes.

My Husband was shocked on how wonderful they all have been since they came out a DIABETIC Cookbook.

Highly recommend this item and the price fair.

I have purchased this book three times already, each time someone borrows it and I never get it back. This is a great recipe book for someone that loves desserts and is on a limited diet.

Long a believer of the "I'll just take more insulin, I will NOT eat inferior foods--especially sweets" philosophy. I am amazed that one book has transformed my thinking about diabetic baking. Now that I have been an insulin dependent diabetic for 35 years I have learned that I must acquiesce a bit if I am going to go on living. Yet this wonderful book is NOT an acquiescence. The desserts here are wonderful! Co-workers are amazed to discover the delectable treats I bring to covered dish luncheons are low fat and low sugar.

You must try the Peach Coffee Cake! It, and the Almond Ricotta Cake Roll, are to die for...but you don't have to die to have them! Yee haaa!!!

Great book!

Even if you are not diabetic, this is a great book to have if you want to eat healthy but still satisfy your sweet tooth. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because of the lack of pictures. The author apparently forgot that "we eat with our eyes first." Pictures would also help with preparation. It's always nice to see what your doing at critical points, not just when you're finished.
