We first checked this book out from our public library to test it and now we can't live without it!

The recipes are delicious and real-life friendly. We do not have diabetes in our household, but want to put healthy nutritious foods on the table.

In my view, any recipe that passes diabetic guidelines will keep the appetite satisfied and fuel our bodies appropriately. But most importantly to us, these recipies appeal to our senses in making mealtime a pleasure with foods we want to enjoy again and again.

Recommended!

I was diagnosed prediabetic with high numbers 8 weeks ago. After meeting with a nutritionist and trying to make sense of adjustments I needed to make with eating, I really felt confused...there is a lot to learn! Luckily this is the first cookbook I purchased and am so glad. I can whip up many of the dishes in just a couple minutes. The ingredients are not complicated and are easy to keep on hand. I made my Easter dinner for my whole family all from the book and no one but my husband knew it was "special" food! My husband likes how I have been cooking so no cooking two separate kinds of meals. I have bought other diabetic cookbooks but not found any other as good and simple. Most recipes in the other books have longer lists of ingredients and take much more time to prepare. I am a cooking kind of gal who ran my own bed and breakfast for ten years...I love pretty and great tasting food...this book gets gobs of stars from me!

A welcome and very highly recommended addition

In "The 4-Ingredient Diabetes Cookbook" cookbook author, food consultant, and nutritionist Nancy S. Hughes has compiled simple and delicious recipes for entrees, side dishes and desserts using four ingredients (or less) that are especially suitable and suited to the dietary needs of diabetics. Quick and easy to prepare, the recipes range from Pineapple-Apricot Fizz; Lemony Asparagus Spear Salad; Peach Barbecued Chicken; and Chili Stuffed Potatoes; to Taco-Spiced Rice; Skillet Roasted Veggies; Zesty Beef Patties with Grilled Onions; and Frozen Chocolate Peanut Butter Layered Pie. Of special note are the 'Cook's Tips' that accompany each of the recipes. "The 4-Ingredient Diabetes Cookbook" is a welcome and very highly recommended addition to diabetes relevant cookbook collections.

I grew up having these recipees rested on me (and my brother David). My mother invented the idea of low-fat good taste cooking. I watched her painstakingly test and re-test every recipee. She always insisted on honest feedback. And you'll reap the benefits by buying this book. A true Godsend for diabetics and dieters.

Calculating cook is the book for people who like to eat good food, don't want to eat boring stuff, and like to cook. Recipes fit into diabetic exchanges (lots easier to keep track of than calories) and include extras for nondiabetics. All recipes come with calorie, exchange, fat content worked out by portion. I lost weight without grumbling too much by following the reccommended daily exchange. I am so sorry this is out of print. I lent my copy and it vanished. Hope it gets reprinted!

I love this book! Being diagnosed with Type II Diabetes is absolutely overwhelming - there are so many new things to learn and so many changes to make in how you eat and how you LIVE! This book takes you by the hand, calms you down and shows you where to begin. The title says it all - Change One - and that's exactly how the book proceeds. Walks you through the changes you need to make one at a time so the changes will become lasting ones. Lots of good information on Type II Diabetes itself as well as on diet and exercise. And plenty of great recipes, including a section on "makeovers" for old favorites like Macaroni & Cheese. I loved this book immediately and showed it to my doctor. She was so impressed she bought a copy for her office and now recommends it to all her newly diagnosed diabetics!

Great diet plan that is easy to follow

Not just for diabetics! My husband is hypoglycemic and we have had wonderful results following this diet plan. He had several very frightening incidences where he crashed severely and they were very clearly a direct response to food. I turned to this book for help and since we started this diet he has not crashed once. Although I have neither health condition I decided to follow the plan too since it seems so smart and simple. The concept of dividing your meal into 1/2 vegetables, 1/4 starches or carbs, and 1/4 protein is a brilliant idea and when it comes to actually making meals this is very easy to follow. You can still eat all the food you love but sometimes the cooking method needs tweaking and you will have to change the portion sizes but you'll catch on very quickly. The transitions are easier than you think. And you'll feel better after only a few days. My husband immediately noticed a change for the better, he woke up with more energy, felt more rested, and was able to get more work done. He just feels good. Plus, we've both lost weight while still enjoying our favorite meals that needed only slight modifications. The best part, we don't feel like we're on a diet! This book will change the way you look at food, cooking methods, and portions and you'll be glad it did. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel better and loose weight, whether you are a diabetic or not.

This was an inspiring story about the challenges the author went through in surviving diabetes. It's difficult to set aside because you want to know what will happen next. After reading his book, I feel like anyone in this day of modern medicine has the ability to live a long and prosperous life with this disease and a very good chance a cure may be just around the corner. It is just fantastic that he is also donating 50% of his proceeds to research!!

Douglas Cairns was enjoying racing and jets in the RAF when he was diagnosed with diabetes, a diagnosis which seemed to put an end to his top speed life. His career as a fighter plane pilot was over - but his determination to both fly again and raise awareness of diabetes resulted in his Diabetes World flight, chronicled in Dare To Dream: Flying Solo With Diabetes Around The World In 159 Days. Both an adventure story and a health memoir, Day To Dream is passionate about flight and living life to its fullest.

This is a "must read" for pilots and for people facing the challenges of the diabetes epidemic, but it is much more, and this terrific read will appeal to a much wider audience. Discrimination and fear will only decline if people like Douglas share their stories of courage and determination. It's a wonderful book with fabulous photos of this amazing journey.

For those of us who have traveled the world via commercial jet and boiler-plate vacations, the author of this book has had an enviable SOLO flight journey marvelously chronicled in this delightful read. Truly an inspiration to those who have had any medical challenge, especially insulin-dependent diabetes. A real eye-opener to the unfortunate state of some national public health organizations in various countries in their feeble attempts to help type-1 diabetes patients, the growing epidemic of diabetes worldwide, combined with a riveting account of world flight in a small twin-engine aircraft. Not many people can have the bravery and perserverance to combine flying solo around the world while standing up for what one believes in -- the freedom to fly ! I had no idea it was so difficult for patients with type-1 diabetes to obtain an unrestricted pilots license. It's wonderful to see how someone lived their dream to fly while having type-1 diabetes.

Go out and live well!

Review Date: 2003-07-07
I have had the privilege of being one of Dr. Dolinar's patients in Phoenix, while I lived there. I say privilege because he's definitely one physician that, unlike many others, takes the time during each visit, to talk with you and calm you down about any doubts or fears you might have. With this book, you can almost have the same opportunity. He put together a very comprehensive and solid text with the help of Betty Page Brackenridge, and this one differs from most of the other diabetes books you will run into in one main respect: it doesn't "cover the topic" in a theoretical, distant manner. It goes all the way through the basics and the more sophisticated topics dealing with insulin-dependence by means of a story, the story of Mike (a longtime diabetic who uses insuline) and his conversations and interactions with his doctor and diabetes educator. It makes it very easy for you as a diabetic to relate to the story, simply because you have been there, and "done that" before.

As for the topics covered, the book deals with Dynamic Insulin Dosing (one very important tool once you are on fast-acting insulin), and a detailed insight about the condition of diabetes borrowing from the metaphor of a fireplace in a cabin, and comparing its many elements to those of a human body: cabin=body cell, logs=blood sugar, keeping a steady flow of air=insulin, etc. Also there's extensive discussing about monitoring (things that you will want to learn about it) and hypoglycemia, and how to prevent it, identify it and treat it.

The part that I found most useful is where the book deals with "living" with diabetes: what do you do on sick days; how to manage grocery shopping and eating outside; what to do and not to do when travelling with diabetes; how to cope with/handle stress; what to expect with regards to insurance claims and much more. In short, the daily in-and-outs of a diabetic, all stuff that you will easily relate with and will have a great time reading and learning from it. As the ending of the book says, it's about "whether we have diabetes or not, we only have so much tread on our tires. And it's a matter of trying to get the most mileage possible out of the tread that we've got... Go out and live well!"

Wonderful book for people who are new to diabetes.

I work at Chronimed. Actually for Home Service Medical which is under the umbrella of Chronimed. We are a mail-order diabetic supply company and full service pharmacy. I started in November of 1997 and knew basically nothing about diabetes. This book helped me grasp what my patients are going through and helped me understand the disease and different types of diabetes. This is an excellent book for beginners who want to know about the disease in terms they will understand. This book is written perfectly for someone who doesn't know all the medical terms for the symptoms or treatments. It's a wonderful book!

A slim, easy guide and worth it's price.

I just bought my hard copy last month and I have also heard Dr Jeff Unger in person on diabetes seminars. He is a primary care physician and being primary care physician myself this book is all I need to know improve diabetes care for my patients. This is not a Harisson or a detailed Thesis on Diabetes but practicle great point of care informations and diferent tools which can be used in an office settings to educate patient and office staff to improve diabetes care. With the fact that 90% of Diabetic population in US (out of approx 22 million people with diabetes)being taken care by Primary care physicians this is a must have tool I believe. The only thing better than the book is to hear Dr Jeff Uner in person. I would definately recommened this book to every Primary care MD or residents.

Amazingly comprehensive review of all aspects of diabetes. This book is up to date, evidence-based, case based and most importantly, written from the heart. Rarely do medical text books read like novels. This is the exception. Check out the chapter on managing mental illness in patients with diabetes. The complications chapter is the most comprehensive and current review I have encountered.

If you treat Diabetic patients you should get this book.

Written by a diabetic Family Physician who understands that to treat diabetes you need to "think like a pancreas." This book was written to provide primary care doctors the tools we need to care for these challenging patients. I got this book the first week it was out and I haven't regreted it.

With the explosion of Diabetes there are not enough consultant physicians (specialists) out there to care for all of these patients. Dr Unger provides the information we need to provide excellent care for our diabetic patients.

I cannot praise this book enough. The only thing better is hear Dr Unger lecture on Diabetic Care in person.
