Probably the worst book I've read on the subject, but you should read it anyway
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

This book does explain alot about the history of how the medical establishment came up with gestational diabetes but it really doesn't help much for women that have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. "Discuss with your doctor" is not helpful. I would have preferred a more helpful book than this from the source.

Too simplistic

This book was written for those without a high school education. It did not contain any relevant information that you couldn't get from a basic pamplet, and included some condescending sections on stopping hard drug abuse and contraception.

I purchased this book expecting to read facts and information about the disease - instead, it was doctors writing about situations they experienced with their patients - I had to return it - it was not at all what I wanted. I didn't find it loaded with wisdom.

This is a book of fluffy stories. This is the least helpful or substantative book of any I have read on diabetes. A waste of money for someone with diabetes who is looking for information

ADA Killing Diabetics
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-19
The ADA who published this book have been prescribing a high-carbohydrate diet plan for many, many years & this book just follows along with that. Their diet plan only provides impetus for more & more medications to bring down the blood-glucose levels that are driven up by the high-carb diet.
Does it make any logical sense, since diabetes is an inability of our bodies to process blood glucose, to prescribe a diet rich in the very foods most likely to drive blood glucose up???

A Bad CDrom

Review Date: 2001-03-18
This cdrom on Diabetic eye diseases promises a lot but delivers very little.Poorly written and difficult to navigate make this cdrom of very little use to anyone in the medical field. The authors obviously have not researched the subject matter properly as the mamagement practices a largely outmoded and inaccurate. It is hardly a surprise that the lead author is not a an attending at a teaching hospital and the last author not a fully accredited attending Ophthalmologist.Don Gas does it better everytime.

An Utter load of RUBBISH!!

This is an extremely poor compendiun of information and pictures on Diabetic Eye disease.Aside from the fact that the information presented is outdated and largely inaccurate, the CD is difficult to navigate and certainly would have benefitted from audio commentary!

Interestingly none of the authors are medical retina specialists or Diabetic eye specialists and also importantly the first author is NOT an attending ophthalmologist at a teaching hospital. Therefore I do not think the CD is written with any authority, and I certainly would not recommend it to anyone.I have used mine as a frisbee when I play with my dog.

If you want to understand more about your diabetes or are thinking of buying this book for a loved one who has diabetes, do not buy this book. It is written as if someone entered the entire book into an online language translator.

(Si usted desea entender más sobre su diabetes o está pensando en comprar este libro para un ser querido quién tiene diabetes, no compre este libro. Se escribe como si alguien entrara el libro entero en un traductor de lenguas automatizado.)

An AARP Guide to Living with Diabetes
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-27
What a disappointment! I thought with the AARP name that there would be something new in this book or at least some specific information for older adults. Instead, it is a rehash of "all things diabetes" from a MD perspective with no new or helpful information. There is also almost no information and nothing of substance on the emotional side of diabetes (other than a little on stress and depression) orhow to make some of the changes needed to manage diabetes. Most of this type of information is in the form of "tips" which are both patronizing and trivial. Everything is written as "shoulds" and "musts" without talking about choices. The book is also unattractive with a few black and white type drawings. There are much better books out there which are written by people who live with diabetes or at least understand what it is like.

not worth the paper it's written on...
Helpful Votes: 25 out of 26 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-23
I would NOT recommend this book to anyone for any reason. It is not worth the paper it's printed on. Let me explain: I bought this book along with several others to try to get as much information as I can about the illness of hypoglycemia - Severe Reactive Hypoglycemia to be exact. While the book is specifically written for those with diabetes, it should be of great benefit to those without diabetes, but having hypoglycemia. However, the authors believe (according to pages 8-9 and many others) that if a person is suffering from the symptoms of hypoglycemia and they do not have diabetes, they are delussional, psychotic and need couseling!! Couseling is NOT what will help the person with hypoglycemia - with Diabetes or not. The tone and manner of the book is very sarcastic, the authors seem to be talking down to the readers and are patronizing in the way they explain things. The content of the book is otherwise shallow. Besides being continually insulted by the authors, I found their constant insistence that they are experts on this subject just because they are older and have had diabetes for a while, to be insignificant and repulsive.

Instead of this book, I would highly recommend The Dos and Don'ts of Hypoglycemia by Roberta Ruggiero, or Hypoglycemia,The Classic Healthcare Handbook by Jeraldine Saunders and Dr Harvey M. Ross or even Living Low-Carb by Fran McCullough and finally Lick the Sugar Habit by Nancy Appleton. These books are full of helpful information and do not tend to make the reader feel like a failure and a mental case. The authors of these books believe and prove that there is a treatment that will work for hypoglycemics...and they show you exactly what to do. I have read and followed their advice and have seen a tremendous improvement in my blood sugar problems. Please try these booksi nstead of the featured book.

bo, the dog with remarkably poor illustrations
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-14
This book is listed as for babies to preschool, but it has little appeal to this age group (or any other). The illustrations are poorly done, unappealing, and not in the least expressive. The text and illustrations are on separate pages, so you can't read while showing the illustration even if you wanted to.

The text is poorly written and full of inappropriately big words; there are no illustrations that actually show what is being talked about (no pictures of blood testing, insulin needles, or any other new object the diabetic child will encounter).

The text is unappealing and condescending as well. A pre-schooler would be confused by the words and wording; an older child would be repulsed by the condescending attitude and lack of actual information about everyday life for diabetic children.

There are a lot of books on diabetes for children on Amazon.com. Look beyond this one. "Bo" is much less useful than a simple verbal explanation from a parent.

If you're planning on passing the CDE exam, find another text to use for your study plan. This particular review guide has so many outright errors that you won't have a chance at passing unless you're already very well educated in diabetes education (and in that case, you don't need any study guide at all). With a falling pH listed as the hallmark symptom of metabolic alkalosis and 5 different vitamins named as B12, (and these are just 2 of multiple examples in the first 50 pages) this guide is sure to leave you irritated.

I bought this book and was amazed at the information because it was useless. This man is so full of himself that I couldn't read what he had to say about diabetes. The worse news is I even considered him as a doctor for my husband. I thank the Lord that I didn't follow through with that idea! I had to give him a star because the page wouldn't leave at all, if I hadn't.

The book is not presenting the right picture of the Indian and pakisthani cusines.

A book can do justice to the Indian food only if it carries recipes according to the different regions of India...As India is so vast with different cultures and cuisines only a book with different regional Indian food could appeal.
