Having just been diagnosed with Diabetes I thought my life was over until I found this cookbook. It has been a lifesaver! The receipes are easy to follow and most ingredients you already have at home. I'm now purchasing for others in my family so they can enjoy it as much as I do. The layout of the book is easy to follow and very user friendly. I've thoroughly enjoyed this cookbook. I would recommend it to anyone - Diabetic or not. It's a healthier way to live and you'll feel great!

Why isn't there a "negative" number of stars?

This cookbook contains recipes with very high carbohydrate counts. I follow a low-carb diet for health reasons (not vanity), and I could never eat any of the items in this cookbook. I am an excellent cook, and I've come up with some wonderful low-carb desserts; but I was hoping for something original. Instead, I found too, too, too many carbs! People with diabetes may also have carbohydrate intolerance, and they should be careful of what they eat in terms of carbs. Even their doctors may not advise them of this problem since many diabetic diets still recommend a high percentage of daily intake be in the form of complex carbohydrates. I did not prepare any of the recipes, so I can't comment on the results. I returned the book.

I tried to give negative stars for this review.

I tried two recipes in this book, Creamy Chocolate Mousse. p 96 and Butterscotch-Chocolate Fudge, p 24.

The mousse is the worst thing to ever have passed my lips. I don't know why all those ingredients were wasted in this recipe; because the only thing I tasted was the cream cheese and the instant coffee. It is reprehensible that one could taste this concoction and still place in a recipe book to make others ill.

The "fudge" is anything but. It never attains the consistency of fudge, turning instead, to a gellatenous mess that can't even be washed down the drain. It must be thrown in the garbage - OUTSIDE - so that it does not stink up the house.

I think Ms. Finsand, and all those who contributed to this book should be required to spend the rest of their lives eating nothing but the recipes in this book. She should at least taste every recipe in the book before publishing it.

Don't believe the bad rap--eat smart and enjoy!

Review Date: 2008-12-03
I think the review by Kathy Anderson, who claimed that the recipes in this book have too many carbohydrates, is unfair and inaccurate. The lengthy, informative, and detailed introduction by Linda Eugene, RD, CDE, explains that "Most of the recipes do not exceed 40 grams of total carbohydrate per serving." Moreover, she discusses at length how diabetics must take a balanced and comprehensive approach to their diet, and taking a splurge on a dessert is always going to require an adjustment elsewhere in one's food intake. Last, she is very oncrete on one crucial point: "The key to including desserts in any meal plan is to focus on portion sizes.... The aim of this book is to offer dessert recipes that taste great. Serving sizes may be smaller, but your sweet tooth will be more satisfied with a small slice of something moist, creamy, and delicious that with a large slice of something dry, bitter, and tasteless." This is a book of desserts, after all--1,001 of them. I haven't made every recipe in this book, but I can vouch for the amazing variety of great recipes here--and for the fact that if you follow the book's directions regarding ingredients, meal planning, and portion control, this book can be a great complement to any diabetes-safe kitchen. Be smart, and enjoy.

I cannot understand how anyone with diabetes or a carbohydrate intolerance of any kind could eat any of these items. They are so high in carbohydrates. I follow a low-carbohydrate regimen for health reasons (not vanity), and I could safely eat none of the recipes found in this tome. I returned the book

I had to purchase this book for an Endocrinology course I was taking; and from the very beginning, I did not enjoy reading it and found it very difficult to do so. Everything is so bland as far as the layout of the text, the coloring, the illustrations, etc. The paragraphs are very wordy and small print, so lots on one page. Another thing I don't like is that there are no review questions at the end of each chapter, nor are there any at the end of the book. There is also no glossary in the book, which makes it difficult when you want to look up a term that you don't know. It's also a UK version, so some of the spellings are a bit different and the punctuation isn't always used properly, or at least the way I have learned it, so the information doesn't "flow" very well as I read it. All in all, I do not recommend this book as a good learning tool for someone who is just starting to learn endocrinology.

This book was required, so I really did not personally select it. However it is a good textbook: very concise, good summary boxes and tables, useful figures, and nice case histories to illustrate the concepts.

I am a big proponent of nutritionally based education, especially as a preventative and treatment source for a myriad of common ailments. As such I find the Wallach's book informative, but am ever frustrated at their scattered writing which leaves many nutritional conclusions unsupported or very vague.

I doubted the craving vs mineral deficiency connection but was quickly proven wrong as I stepped up my daily intake to 200% of both vitamins and minerals 2x per day (100% each time). After doing that, all cravings were gone and have stayed gone for over 3 months. Wow!!!

The Wallach's sell their own blend of supplements, most of which are ridiculously overpriced, even for a premium product. I know, because I research this stuff to death. The multivitamine/mineral supplement can be easily had for half the cost by going to sites like ReNutra/Lyflo or others without getting gouged to death.

Good information - but be prepared for frustrating times as you thirst for properly developed thoughts, conclusions, and an easily followable direction in the writing.

Still, I thank the Wallach's for their benefiting the Nutrionally based prevention and mitigation of disease.

...Feeling overwhelmed, the title drew me to the book, but I found out that 99% of it was how to spot burnout! I don't need to know how to spot it as I already am burnedout!I think that many others like me would think that the most valuable information was the conclusion of the book which consisted of 2 pages on prevention and recovery. I will use that information, but shouldn't have wasted me time on the rest! That caused burnout right there!

Helpful, but doesn't address the fundamental problem
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1998-10-02
The authors have written a thorough study of how burnout happens in women, what its symptoms are, and how to cope with it. Their scholarship is impressive, their recommendations are sensible, and their attitude is compassionate. Unfortunately, I think they made a fundamental mistake: they see burnout as essentially the individual's problem, and thus something that it's up to the individual to address.
The fact is that most of the causes of burnout -- e.g., excessive work loads, lack of control, insufficient rewards for the work performed -- are caused by the SITUATION itself and not by the individual. So, although the individual can make things a little better by changing her/his attitude and speaking up for what she/he needs, this won't have much effect unless the situation changes. And if the situation is controlled by a for-profit HMO, or by management whose main concern is the stockholders, there's a more fundamental problem here than the employee's attitude!
Unfortunately, the way most people cope with impending burnout is to detach themselves emotionally from their jobs -- a strategy recommended here, and also, as a general approach to life, by recent books such as Pollan and Levine's "Live Rich." I think this is a serious mistake: as other authors have pointed out, employees need to unite and work with management in order to burnout-proof the situation. If individuals retreat into the "It's only a job" attitude, both employees and the institions they work for will be the losers. Christina Maslach's books present compelling evidence that burnout is situational, rather than an individual problem, and I highly recommend them as a corrective.

This book was not helpful at all. I am a Type I Diabetic in the process of trying to start a family and I was looking forward to reading this book. It told me the same exact thing that "what to expect" pregnancy book does, barely mentioning diabetes topics. It did not ease my mind or give me any information on how my diabetes would be affected by pregnancy. The only thing they kept repeating was that diabetes NEEDS TO BE CONTROLLED DURING PREGNANCY. No kidding.

I bought this book in hope of gaining an insight to the increased insulin demands of a diabetic pregnancy due to hormonal fluctuations. This book only describes what insulin is/does. There should be a line on the cover stating that this book is only recommended for uninformed/newly diagnosed diabetics.

This book needs better focus

I was very disappointed by this book. It seems to have been written for children. It has some information that seems wildly inappropriate for a book that purports to be about pregnancy -- a section on birth control, with an explanation of what a condom is and how it works, for example. It also takes pains to explain terms such as "trimester." It doesn't get very deep into what a diabetic woman can expect and encounter during pregnancy, and that's what I need. I agree with another reviewer that someone needs to write a good book about diabetes and pregnancy.

This was my first book and was very helpful!

I am the editor of Diabetic Mommy Online Magazine - DiabeticMommy.com

I am a type 2 diabetic, and had to start insulin when I got pregnant with my son. At that time I felt there was little information on pregnancy and diabetes and this little book was a God-send.

I was not a diabetes expert by any means, so this booklet was great for giving me a frame of reference for all the new information that was suddently being shoved in my direction. When you are a newly pregnant diabetic, many times you can find yourself overwhelmed by all the information they want you to learn NOW. As time passed, I realized much of the information I was getting in kits, booklets, pamphlets and information sheets was just the same information rehashed over and over. The reason why I was able to mentally organize the information and stop feeling like I was in another country when it came to diabetes terms was because of this book.

I've looked at the other reviews and see that many of the negative reviews came from type 1 diabetics. And, I can understand why they would feel this way. They most likely have lived most of their life with this disease, and this little booklet goes over a lot of stuff they already know.

This is a little book, about 75 pages. It contains 10 brief chapters and sections with the following titles:

Diabetes, Pregnancy & You
How Your Baby Develops
What to Expect in Nine Months
Diabetes During Pregnancy
Insulin Therapy
Nutrition, Diabetes, and Pregnancy
Exercise, Diabetes, and Pregnancy
Monitoring Your Diabetes
Problems Associated with Diabetes
More About Pregnancy
Tests to Expect During Your Pregnancy
Labor and Delivery
Birth Control
Making the Choice

The recipes look great, but are unrealistic for the population I work with and the geographic area I am located in. I am in a small Mid-western community without access to alot of these food items. I have been able to use some of the recipes and love those recipes I have tried. Thanks for the great recommendation.

I was VERY disappointed with this book. The Joslin quick and easy recipe book is great however. The healthy carb book is definately only for people who like thier meat still on the hoof. The recipes are unrealistic and I too, found the carb ratios are not what is recommended in the real world. I have better results keeping the Joslin bible in my head, but working with the Zone Cookbook. Be sure your dr agrees b4 you try this at home ;0

Too Many Carbohydrates

I was given this book during a diabetes education class. I'm sorry, but eating as many carbohydrates as this book recommends is not helpful to diabetics. If I ate one serving of most recipes, my blood glucose would shoot way up. I guess if you are looking to keep the pharmaceutical industry in business, this is a good way.

Carnivors need not apply

This is a good cookbook for vegetarians and relatively inactive ones at that. The meal plans in the back are based on about 1500 calories which would be about 700 or more deficient if you are relatively active.

If you like meat, poultry or fish seek out a different cookbook.

It does have desserts BUT many of the recipes state sugar substitute without giving any hints as to which of the many to use. Since they vary in sweetness and some are packaged as measure for measure equivalent to sucrose, having a recipe saying one packet or 1/8 tsp. may leave you under or over sweetened depending upon what variety you use.

I thought that I would receive a book with clear meal plans for avoiding hypoglycemic episodes. What I got was another "reduce your stress and take care of yourself" book, with an extra bonus chapter about how helpful others found the previous edition. I am disappointed. What a bunch of hoo-haa (if that's how you spell hoo-haa). I'd send it back for a refund but the shipping charges would cancel out most of the refund. Headed for the recycle bin...

This entire book is an advertisement for the book and self praise for the author, and never gets to anything interesting. It's full of patting on the back (for things not relevant to the reader) and useless advice. It tells you basically, to take care of yourself and feel good, and then you won't have hypoglycemia. Hot tips like, "be sure to use a base coat for your nailpolish", and "just learn to feel good about yourself" - NO practical advice for hypoglycemics. This is a pep talk to do something about hypoglycemia, but if you've bought the book, you are probably already looking to do something - unfortunately this book doesn't give any useful guidance. I was mad that I spent money on it. She should have paid me for spending time reading her advertisement and self praise.

This cookbook is NOT low carb. The editorial statement says that in the book 1 carb equals 15g carbohydrate. Pa-lease, give us all a break, many low carbers do not use more than 20g carb per day...let alone 15g or more per meal.

Low Carb exchanges
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-20
In reference to previous review-any diabetic, who has to watch their simple carb intake to live, knows that 1 carb exchange does equal 15 grams. That's the standard used by anyone, including doctors and dieticians for meal plans. As a diabetic, with a prescribed meal plan from a dietician, I am allowed anywhere from 45-75 grams of carbs for each meal, depending on which one of the three meals I am eating. This of course is also based on height and body weight. 20 grams of carbs per day is not healthy for a prolonged period of time. Best recomendation is moderation of a good mixture of fresh foods.

This book advocates a HB1AC of 7.0 or lower when the standard has already been moved to a HB1AC 6.5 or below so the advice is already out of date. We now know from research that you have to stay below 6.5 at all times to avoid the damages caused by complications.

This book also advocates the somewhat discredited high carbohydrate theory of treating diabetes. Writers who do not have the disease always seem to think that those with the disease should be eating oatmeal and pasta. While that may work for their healthy bodies, it does not work for me or many others with the disease. It is better to read the advise from Bernstein, who has the disease, and writes from experience or read Blood Sugar 101. Even my HMO now encourages carb counting. My HMO says that I can have oatmeal or pasta if limited to 1/3 cup. 1/3 cup hardly seems worth it , so why not make the choices as described by Bernstein's Sugar Solution? Read books by those who have been there and ignore those who have not.
