One thing's for sure. You read this book from cover to cover and you'll be one knowledgable student. It's loaded with information about endocrinology. Unfortunately, it's also loaded with extraneous information, some of which is most likely irrelevant to what your endocrinology professor is trying to teach, i.e. human endocrinology. Moreover, this excess info makes you have to search long and hard to get to the information you're looking for! But in general, it's a good book. I give it two snaps up and a circle.

Comprehensive textbook.

The layout of this book make it very easy to use as a textbook or reference source. The clinical examples are very useful to those with a medical interest. The author offers a comprehensive, no nonsense aproach that gets the job done.

I was forced to buy this book for a mixed undergrad and graduate endo course. While this book is long on info, it really doesn't work for the course I am taking.... I often reference my biochem and cell bio texts in order to get the full picture. Hadley is also overly wordy, to the point that it can get cumbersome and confusing.

This textbook would be valuable if you were looking for the most recent developments in endocrinology, but if you are trying to learn understandable details about the subject, this is an awful book. The layout was terrible and it skipped around so much that is was basically incomprehensible. I have no idea why my professor picked it.

This is a very good book with a lot of state of the art information. It will need some understanding of endocrinology or a good basic course in physiology to get the benefits. It would improve, probably, with an approach to the study of the hormones based on the physiological process being under regulation.

This recipe books represents the worst of both worlds--sugar in every recipe, but the resulting products are completely tasteless. My first attempt, the double chocolate cake, looked like a flattened elephant dropping after baking, and probably didn't taste much better--I threw it away. I tried a second recipe, replaced the full cup of sugar with Splenda, and still had to add more Splenda plus a bit of regular sugar to make it remotely edible (but still bad). I've had many ready-made sugar-free products that taste vastly better than anything in this book. If I could give this zero stars, I would. Ugh!

I have yet to make anything from the recipe section of this book, so I cannot rate the results. However, the first part of the book gives a great overview for those newly diagnosed with diabetes. Being someone who loves to cook, I also like that the information given has taught me how to adjust my old favorites to fit my new lifestyle. A good purchase thus far.

I wanted a diabetic cookbook because my husband and my mother (who lives with us) are trying to eat healthier. I thought following some of the diabetic recipes would be a good healthy, sensible way to eat. I didn't realize that about 1/2 of this entire book is information about diabetes.... the other half is recipes. We don't need all the technical information on diabetes. If you are looking for info on diabetes, then this is definitely the book for you. But if you are looking for healthy diabetic recipes only, this is NOT the book. I wish I had known before I had purchased this book that it is an information first/recipes second book.

There is nothing wrong with the recipes in this book but they are boring. I could (and have) put them together without the expense of this book. If you are new to diabetic cooking, this book may be helpful. However, if you are an old hand, forget it!

I bought this book hoping I could eat a little better, since I have "elevated blood sugar levels" but I think most recipes in this book would give me "elevated cholesterol levels" instead. At its publishing date I'm sure it was better than what most people were using to cook with, but we now know that margarine is full of the bad stuff that clogs our arteries, and just about every recipe seemed to have that as an ingredient. So if you're looking for healthy cooking, this isn't the place to start. I suggest finding a book with a publishing date of the last few years, that would have taken into consideration trans fats and our need to eliminate them.

I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes. My nutritionist basically told me to watch my carbs, but dont limit my fat/salt/etc at this time. I bought this along with a Betty Crocker Diabetic Cookbook Everyday Meals Easy as 1-2-3. I am glad I bought the other one. It has pictures and is much easier to navigate. In my case the New Diabetic cookbook spends too much time on diabetes information and isn't as appealing for meals. Great for someone else, just not me!

down to earth explanations for newly-diagnosed diabetics

Review Date: 2003-02-16
This book has lots of practical, down-to earth explanations of interest to those with newly diagnosed with diabetes or those who cook for for diabetics.

It has hints on how to read nutritional labels, including the various names for "sugar", etc. We had an appointment with a nutritionist, and many things she suggested were mentioned and explained in this book.

The author talks about "drawing the line" on some healthy alternatives: she does not like whole wheat pasta. This, to me, is a realistic attitude. I try to cook as healthy as possible for my diabetic husband, but he just can't get used to one of his favorites, rice pudding, with brown rice. We won't have it very often, but when we do it will be the way he likes it--with white rice.

If you've read this far and are less-than-perfect at planning menus like I am, you might be interested in some simple menu plans for different caloric requirement diabetes diets at this website--this book plus these menus and some recipes from diabetes websites will get you off to a good start. You can fine tune things later:

"Mouth-watering recipes"?!
Helpful Votes: 97 out of 109 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-24
If your idea of "mouth-watering recipes that you can't live without" includes ingredients like 1/3 lowfat American processed cheese, lowfat or fat-free cream cheese and sour cream, lowfat frozen french fries, and powdered Ranch dip mix, then I guess this is the diabetic-diet advice book for you. As for me, eating lowfat American cheese is akin to gnawing on a PVC pipe - pure chemicals. And eating fat-free cream cheese is like eating your art gum eraser. I can live without such recipes. Essentially, this book is for people who are used to quickie recipes and fast food chains and want to still eat that way but try to control their blood glucose levels. The popularity of the Joanna Lund style of "cooking" certainly suggests that there are many who cannot give up such things as chocolate cream pie and are willing to accept the substitutes of fat-free, sugar-free chocolate pudding mix pie topped with Lite Cool Whip. For those who fall into this group, this book has a number of useful tables giving the calories, carbohydrates, fat, protein and salt values for prepackaged common brand name cereals, frozen desserts, cookies, pasta sauces, salad dressings, frozen entrees and frozen pizza. The same breakdowns are also provided for restaurant chain food, such as Denny's, Jack-in-the-Box, Wendy's, MacDonald's, Burger King, Subway, Kentucky Fried Chicken and donut shops. However, if one doesn't eat this way, has type II diabetes and wants to figure out a glucose-controlling diet, this book is worthless. I think this is important to point out because I purchased this book based on the two glowing reviews and am now out the purchase price. Indeed, the book does try to take a postive attitude in telling diabetes what they CAN eat, but the general information can be gotten in much more detail in other books. I would make a recommendation, but I am in the early stages of this research and have not yet found a diabetic diet advice book that I would whole-heartedly recommend for those who avoid processed food. So far, the best has been "The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bible" which did offer some useful recipes, but even that book has menu plans that include frozen entrees, canned fruit cocktail, frozen waffles and margarine.

I was very disappointed when I opened the book and read various areas seeking current information on insulin production, injection, pumping and diabetic classifications since the changes of 2003. I am now 53 years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes at 38. Due to medical ignorance, rather than adaguate testing, the Adult Onset of high Blood Glucose was treated with oral medication for 5 months. I had no pointers currently recognised for Type 2. Finally it was suggested I might want to consult a specialist familiar with using insulin. He looked at my Log Book and with and overall dailey use of 24 units had me under 150mg/dL as an average reading the same week. This book is very simple, written at a grade school level (at least it used to be grade school) and only treatment of Type 2 with Diet, Exercise, and Oral Medication is set forth with any detail. The general title is deceptive. Barry J. Shiffert

I dissagree with the previous reviewer in one aspect: the book is of no use to you if you already have type II diabetes.

The title is deceptive. If you have Diabetes already, this book will not help you "beat it." The main point of the book is how to "prevent it." The basis for the recommendations provide here are supposedly based on success of the "ground-breaking" Diabetes Prevention Program. Unfortunately, if you want to assess on your own the results of that study, or even a small portion thereof, you are out of luck reading this book; just go to the primary literature.

In short, although the author (Ms Delahanty)does not highly recommend any diet, and reviews a few diets for the reader, the high carb, low fat diet approach appears to be by default the diet of choice. Unfortunately, for us (metabolic syndrome (X-ers)), thrifty gene-types, the low fat/high carb approach has lead us down the path to diabetes. And it is not the "It's the calories, stupid," either, Ms Delahanty. We handle all energy sources uniquely. As many low carb dieters can document, they can easily exceed the caloric intake of your low fat dieters and still loose weight, and most importantly of all, keep their blood sugars low.

For you with diabetes, save your money and check out a number of low -carb diet books on the market, particularly Drs. Bernstein and Atkins, and you will have a much better chance of "Beating Diabetes."

Book review of Beating Diabetes by Dr. David Demko

STOP. Do not read one more thing. Not a newspaper, magazine, or even the back of your cereal box ... until you first read this life-changing book. Hey, the title says, "Diabetes" and you're saying, "well that's not for me." Do yourself a favor and think again. Every household should own this book as a desk-reference for living a longer and (more importantly) healthier life.

Modern medicine is in the throws of a death-grip struggle with the most formidable health crisis in recent history, diabetes. The Center for Disease Control pegs the health costs of America's careless lifestyle habits (poor diet, obesity, lack of exercise) at $176 billion annually. As as result, diabetes is fast becoming your greatest health risk.

Ironically, the more science understands about diabetes, the less and less Americans are applying that knowledge to improving their lifestyle. Nearly 70 percent of adults suffering from adult onset diabetes now risk early death from stroke, heart attack, and kidney failure, say the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American College of Endocrinologists.

The good news is that modern medicine has assembled a formidable resource for combating America's formidable health crisis. That resource is a new book from McGraw-Hill. My review found the book to be the definitive source on diabetes prevention and treatment. Why? The authors employ scientific knowledge in the best way possible. Empowering consumers to take personal responsibility for their wellness by applying the advances of medical science to their everyday lifestyles.

Readers will be delighted to find complex concepts and processes explained in easily understood language enhancing the likelihood for application to daily lifestyle routines. Are you confused about all those diet programs? Excellent reviews of the most popular programs are offered for the reader's consideration. For example, Dr. Phil's "Ultimate Weight Loss Solution Diet" earned high praise, which makes perfect sense because the weight gain on your bottom originates from your top (how you think about food). Additionally, the book's explanation of the difference between "activity" and "exercise" is positively brilliant. A real eye-opener for those who may have been unsuccessful in previous attempts at weight loss and maintenance.

My opinion, the book's greatest value is its central theme. Again and again, the authors empower readers with scientific knowledge, enabling them to make immediate, health-enhancing changes in their lifestyles. Toward that end, here's a list of what I found very useful in the book.
1.How our lifestyle can endanger our health
2.Weight gain myths and realities
3.Reviews of the most popular diet programs, weight-loss plans, and exercise programs
4.Illustrations of therapeutic nutrients composition, and Body Mass Index chart
5.How to get ready to change your lifestyle for the better
6.Appendices of meal plans, recipes, and healthy snacks
By far the best source for healthy lifestyle that I've read in years. Read it, and reap.

With humor this writer tells the story of how she manages her life and diabetes. She also informs the reader from where the infomation was obtained for those who may have questions or need additional facts. Much credit is given to her doctor and diabetic guru Dr. Richard K. Bernstein(diabetic of 50+ years and the originator of blood glucose testing to normalize blood sugars using the glucograph system), author of the book Diabetes Solutions who's advice and planning she followed. To say the least this book is motivational, informitive and very helpful. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs diabetic information, motivation or wants to manage their own health care.

This book cut to the chase in allowing me to read- with a good dose of humor-all the things I really need to know about my new found disease. The gray highlite boxes are especially helpful and treat specific topics with concise information. I had just had my first appointment with a dietician, when my wife came home with this book. I gave this book to my mother, a recently-diagnosed type II diabetic. She gave it to her doctor who later advised her to toss it and stick with advice from medical professionals. Diabetics and their families need reliable medical advice, not armchair md's who teach themselves via internet searches and recommend popular, unproven theories of ways to "beat" serious health issues. This book is obviously written from the perspective of a Type 2 diabetic, and the author seems completely ignorant in her lack of any perspective on the fact that people with Type 1 diabetes will always require insulin injections, thus always have to manage their blood sugar, regardless of changes they make to their diets, exercise regimen, etc. This book is pretty limiting.

The author of this book took an article about Scandinavians and longevity from the medical literature, (research from REAL physicians) and decided he could use it to make lots of money by selling his bottled "Omega-3 Miracle". The medical literature does NOT in any way support any claims about the bottled stuff he is selling. Omega 3 fatty acids IN FISH have been proven to increase longevity. There are NO medical studies on Mr. Gorden's product. The author is NOT an MD, though he uses the title in his name. He is not a cardiologist. He is not a practicing radiologist and, despite the bio, he can not be located anywhere as a practicing Osteopathic doctor either. He is a complete hoax! So eat healthy foods, live a healthy life style and save your money - don't fork over your hard-earned cash to a guy who lies about his background. Love the photo on the cover of him with a stethoscope around his neck - almost makes you think the guy has a medical background.

As a medical doctor and researcher I have to say that this is clearly the finest work to date (in form that's understandable to the lay person) regarding the many health benefits of fish oil. You can tell that Dr. Gordon is certainly one of the most knowledgeable individuals studying omega-3 today and it's relationship to heart disease prevention and relief of arthritis pain, among the many other benefits. The information is presented in an organized fashion and it's an enjoyable read as well. I strongly recommend that anyone interested in extending their life read this book.

I am not purchasing ISLANDIC fish oil. The prices are too high. I suspect that this Dr. Gordon wishes to make additional profits by convincing readers to purchase only from this source - from his own web site. I believe this because other respectible authors make similar claims for fish oil using non-Islandic sources.
Except for this detail, I have placed a large portion of my hopes for lower disease risk, with greater longivity, on the basic principles presented in Dr. Gordon'a books.

This book is not very good the same information can be found in five minutes on the internet. Any Dr. who uses an honorary degree after his name is suspect. Dr. Garry Gordon does not hold a valid MD degree, he is a DO and should only use that degree after his name. Although a DO deegree is an equivalent medical degree, the fact that he uses a fake MD degree shows his insecurity about his credentials. Further, his is a strong proponent of chelation therapy which is a fraudulent medical practice. He is a radiologist not a heart specialist as the commercial states.

I have been carefully following the plan laid out by Dr Fuhrman and in 3 months I brought my A1c from 12.2 down to 6.1, WITHOUT ANY MEDICATIONS. The neuropathy in my big toe is gone. This is probably my own error, more than a flaw with the book. I thought it would have more information in it about why certain types of foods were better or worse for diabetes and blood sugar issues. Instead, it said what food was good and bad with very little explanation of why.

I'm not good at taking someone's word for something, especially with so many varying views of health issues out there. I like to know why someone is saying something, so that I can be my own judge of it.

The focus of this book is 99% on the recipes. Not what I wanted, but not bad.

If you want information on the entire subject of Diabetes get a book like "diabetes for dummies". i gave this book 2 stars because there is some attempt to provide recipes that are for diabetics... however, there are a lot of recipes that are very high in carb count... for example...the very first recipe on pg 18, corny french toast, is 69 grams of carbs... pg 26, corn potato chowder is 53 carbs... pg 28 pancakes 76 carbs... pg 38 pasta is 68 carbs... anyway, you get the point that this book is loaded with hi carb recipes. i would not recommend this book...you can get just as good recipes by doing a google on the subject... i feel the term "for people with diabetes" on the title is very misleading...

Out of Date Information

I agree with the other comments that Ms. Loring is an obviously caring mom who is writing from experience and with compassion, but I find the information in the book very dated.

The book does not mention the insulin pump, which many kids now use, and has been a wonderful alternative to shots for many people with Diabetes. Also, the philopsophy that kids with Diabetes are "forbidden" to ever have sugar is extremely dated. Children and adults with Type 1 Diabetes can certainly enjoy the occasional treat (birthday parties, etc), with prior planning, and careful monitoring. If you work with your healthcare provider closely, children with Type 1 Diabetes no longer have to be the "odd kids out".

For more current information, check out Understanding Diabetes, published by the Children's Diabetes Foundation. While it doesn't have the "Mom Who Has Been There" angle, it does have a ton of very helpful and easily searchable information.

Dated information of marginal value.

I appreciate the fact that this book was written by someone who "has been there." But, Ms Loring wrote this book in 1991 and apparently updated some of the mateial in 1999. Given today's advances in diabetic treatment much of the information is sadly out of date.
If you want to read a book about the old days of diabetic treatment or a book written by a compassionate mother, then go ahead. I personally find it difficult to relate to the expriences of a Hollywood actress from over a decade ago.
If you want to know about today's treatment alternatives and how to deal with Type 1 diabetes in today's world, find a book with a more recent publication date, written by someone with the proper medical credentials. I'm not a medical professional, but I'm quickly becoming an expert on juvenile diabetes by reading and studying timely publications.

This book helped ease our fears.

I was given this book by another parent of a diabetic child and I read it and reread it. It is so honest about all the things that can happen to your child as well as encouragement. It has been a referance guide for our family. Her cookbook is wonderful too!

When I decided to take control of my eating and my life, I found this book. It was a great inspiration. It gave me the strength to change my eating habits for life, and to exercise and take care of myself.

A good book if you want to gain weight.

If you like"Association Diets," especially one from one of the most politically agressive and media savvy organizations, this one is for you. One look shows the typical high starch, high glycemic diet that almost killed me. If you are truly interested in eating healthy, this type of one-size-fits all diet guide is just about useless.
