If there were ever a disease requiring a comprehensive team approach, diabetes is it. The Everything Diabetes Book presents a series of suggestions of ways in which different approaches and different professionals can be helpful. Again, the self help aspect is important, but the importance of professional medical supervision and monitoring is also emphasized. In general, The Everything Diabetes Book tends to be more like a basic bible of diabetes rather than a trendy survey of the latest alternative therapies, though some of that information is referred to.
There are many practical self help tips and facts and resources included for diabetics. All together, the Everything Diabetes Book is an excellent resource for the diabetic and family or friend(s). It can be a very frightening experience to receive the news that someone you love or you yourself are a diabetic. This book presents both the good and the "bad" news in easily digestible information bytes and in so doing, encourages the diabetic to take back a healthy control of their life.
Recommended for adults or (literate) teens with issues or interests in diabetes. The Everything Diabetes Book is a very thorough practical resource for the lay person.

American Diabetes Association. A Field Guide to Type 2 Diabetes: The Essential Resource from the Diabetes Experts
This book delivers as advertised. The format is similar to a travel guide, which makes it easy to find the destination (or topic) of choice and go directly to it. Tables and charts allow for a quick reference to facts about laboratory tests or medications. The addition of a personal touch, such as comments from actual patients on topics taken from the ADA web site, give it a unique focus as compared to other diabetes fact books.
The Field Guide pays special attention to everyday issues that people with diabetes face, such as finding medical services or dealing with a doctor who is not very interested in diabetes. These are issues that it might take several years for a patient to address, especially if they don't attend diabetes classes or support groups. This is a comprehensive resource, written by well-known diabetes experts, which serves as a good beginner's guide to the nuts and bolts of diabetes.

Great Ideas for Healthy EatingReview Date: 2008-03-29
Pretty much every recipe is a single page. You get recipes broken out into breakfast, lunch, dinner, sides / appetizers and desserts. As with any recipe book, there are going to be recipes you adore and others you just aren't personally fond of. Some of us love scallops, some of us hate scallops. It's not a bad thing, it's a nice thing that we all have different taste buds.
So in that sense, we went more for a general style sense on the cookbook rather than praising or disliking specific recipes.
So first, many of the recipes are on the vague side. They include things like "get some frozen waffles and put berries on top". Or perhaps "get some frozen fish fillets - cook them according to the package - and put them on hamburger buns". Yes, other of the recipes are more complete, but sticking with the one-page theme they tend to have brief descriptions.
Because of these situations, we were extremely curious how the nutritional information was calculated. After all, if you use different pre-made frozen waffles, they can vary wildly as to their nutritional content. The same is true for tortillas, mentioned in another recipe. One recipe said the salt was optional - but was the salt included in the nutritional value, or not?
Now, that all being said, we really like a lot of the ideas presented here. It's not as much that they give you a "real recipe" to follow as much as they give you a cool idea. Mexican tuna salad? That sounds rather delicious! I don't need to follow their exact recipe - I can use their cool starting point and go from there. Cheesy cauliflower mash? I can easily do that, but not use their fat-free half-and-half.
However, I didn't really need their ice cream sandwich idea of "take a scoop of ice cream - put it between two low carb cookies" :) To me that doesn't deserve a full page of it's own. How about including several ice cream ideas all together, to make it a little more complete?
So, if you get stuck for ideas, then definitely use this book to help you get some new ones! Eating healthy is a VERY delicious way to live and you can eat delicious new things every day. If you already have a number of low carb cookbooks and have a variety of recipe ideas, then you probably can grab this at your library and just skim it for another idea or two.

A tremendous help; it may have literally saved my life.Review Date: 2003-12-09
In this book, I was firmly advised NOT to exercise until my blood sugar was below 250; otherwise my body would react to the exercise by releasing even more sugar into my blood. After I stopped the exercise my blood sugar did start to slowly drop. I then carefully read the book from cover to cover, and gained a large amount of very useful information.
I also began doing "Tai Chi for Diabetes", which also appears to have helped.
Within a few weeks my blood sugar level dropped below 110. I then discontinued the medication my doctor had given me. For over a week now my blood sugar has been below 107; without taking any pills.
I've read a few other books on Diabetes, and they were all somewhat helpful; but "The Mayo Clinic on Managing Diabetes" was by far the most helpful and informative book I've read on the subject. I strongly recommend it.

Absolutely the Best Book On Hypoglycemia-Simple and BrilliantReview Date: 2007-11-29
I am going to put the review that I wrote for the book "The Hypoglycemia/Diabetes Cope Book" by Freda Whalen and Gilbert Mancuso here as well, because it's actually the same exact book, reprinted with a different title:
I found this book at a time when my body was completely out of whack, after experiencing strange symptoms my entire life. This book did nothing less than change my life. Avoiding sugar and eating to maintain blood sugar can completely improve the quality of one's life, from their body and mind, to their sense of self and their relationships.
This book is, as I said, simple and brilliant, and makes it very easy for any newly diagnosed hypoglycemic to understand how, when, and what to eat to get their physical and mental symptoms under control. The author has been through the ups and downs of a low blood sugar disorder herself, and has dedicated her life and career to helping others with this often-misunderstood disorder. I even tracked her down and e-mailed her, and spoke with her over the phone-she is a kind, understanding, wise woman.
I cannot say enough about this book, or about the very likely possibility that there is an epidemic of hypoglycemia running rampant in this country today. Sugar is an unnecessary and obscenely over-consumed substance in the American diet, and a lot of people just don't understand how detrimental it can to to one's health-especially to people with sensitive systems. One can only wonder how many children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD would benefit from a nutritional approach, by staying away from refined carbohydrates, and by eating quality proteins and complex carbohydrates. I wonder how many people with mood disorders, depression and anxiety are really struggling with undiagnosed blood sugar swings. The link between diet, sugar and behavior is not new or radical-there is plenty of literature on it. In the documentary "Super Size Me", Morgan Spurlock reported on a school for juveniles with behavioral problems who improved dramatically when put on a healthy diet with no refined carbohydrates. Dr. Yvonne Sanders, an elementary school principal from Georgia, has written a book titled "Healthy Kids, Smart Kids". She does not allow sugar or refined carbohydrates in her school, and has seen improvement in attendance rates, behavior, and science and math scores, as well as a decrease in visits to the school nurse.
If you have kids, or really want to know what it means to eat well, do yourself a favor and buy this book. If you feel like something is off with your body-if you experience depression, anxiety, and constant physical and mental symptoms, but your doctor tells you that you are fine, that nothing is wrong, and that it is 'all in your head', or that you have a 'chemical imbalance' and need to take pills that you are kind of scared to take, I strongly recommend that you order a used copy of this book and take a look at it-it will quite likely be the best decision you have ever made when it comes to taking responsibility for your health. Nutrition is such an important factor when it comes to good health, and it is really scary how much sugar and junk disguised as food are being consumed.
I have a personal investment in this subject matter. I have likely had this disorder my entire life, but I did not even hear of it until a couple of years ago. This disorder can be easily maintained through good nutrition and exercise, and it can easily turn one's life upside down if ignored. Sugar, like many things, can seem pretty benign, but for certain people, can be utterly devastating to their health.
This book is amazing, and think it should be required reading for doctors, nurses, parents, educators, counselors, and all professionals who deal with wellness and health. But, most of all, I would like for this book to land in the hands of people who want to take control of their lives and their health. I also believe that this very real nutritional disorder should be addressed with the seriousness it deserves, so that the entire population has the opportunity to be as healthy as they are willing to commit themselves to be.
This book is extremely easy to read and very comprehensive.Review Date: 1997-09-21

A light read about a not-so-light diseaseReview Date: 2008-06-29
Priscilla's approach is neither nor packed with technicality. Rather, she takes the approach of telling a story: sharing anecdotes in a very easy-to-digest way that makes "My Life as a Pancreas" a very light about a disease that is not so light. Her storytelling exposes the readers (ideally, the parents of a child who has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes) to lots of accumulated wisdom about things that will likely cross their paths at some point or another. Yet she writes in a way that comes across as a pal giving you good advice not as a condescending know-it-all.
I have LADA (with a pancreas that stopped producing enough insulin at age 30) and found "My Life as a Pancreas" valuable: I would recommend this book to anyone touched by diabetes in any way. Plus its 60 pages will take you no time to read.

A view from the trenches ...Review Date: 2006-10-14
If you or someone close to you has had a child diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, whether it be one month ago or one decade ago, I highly reoommend that you read this book. As the old movie review goes, it will make you laugh -- at the "crazy" thoughts that run through Priscilla's brain (possibly because they appeared in your thoughts as well) -- and it will make you cry - when you read about her love for her sons (because we all check on our children as they're sleeping, if only to kiss their cheeks or poke their fingers).
As a parent of a type 1 diabetic (diagnosed 4/04 at age 6), I thank Priscilla for writing this book and sharing her (and her son's) tales with us. I thank her for not just offering helpful tips (which are useful!) but also for reassuring us that we are perhaps not that strange just because we ask ourselves whether a nosebleed is a good blood check opportunity. And last but not least, I thank her for helping us all realize that we are not alone in our daily co-existence (dare I say "battle"?) with this chronic condition.

This book can reveal "secrets" of the desease that can save your life or the life of your loved one. There is help for this dreaded thing called diabetes.
Do You Know?Review Date: 2008-12-31
I am a Type 2 diabetic and learned much from her book. She covers from lows to highs, and everything in between. She gives all of us hope to live a long, full life with this disease. She uses humor, her life experiences, and her faith to tell the reader the truth.
Diabetes is so prevalent. I would hope every one would read her book, even medical personnel. There is much to know and much to learn, and it is ongoing. You never know when a friend, family member or even you might need to know about how to deal with diabetes.
Thank you so much for a wonderful book. I have shared it with many, and they have all been grateful.
Thanks again.
Sandra

I would recommend this book to diabetics and anyone who comes into contact with them. I feel that medical professionals would benefit greatly from reading this book.
From the shock of diagnosis to the births of her children. Janet Elliott Hughey shows the reader how far medicine has advanced since those days. The triumphs of her 50 year celebration and meeting Miss America 1999.
Her faith is unwaivering and her willingness to share all is inspiring. I highly recommend this book to all.
