I love the set up by carb amounts

I like the fact that the recipes start at lowest carb amount, to highest. (It also has an index for those who want by ingredient or alphabetical). The recipes I have had all had vegetables. I had chicken with green beans, stew with cabbage, and lentil (that included carrots, and green beans in the recipe) soup.

My family and I have enjoyed every recipe I have used so far from this book.

Is full of slow cooker recipes but...

the majority of recipes that are low carb are not using veggies, just meat. And most have you pre-cooking it prior to putting it into the slow cooker. I want some that all I need to do is dump everything into it and when I get home in the evening I have supper ready, no muss, no fuss. They also use thickeners like flour and corn starch quite often, but these are better left out, you can add your veggies instead and still have less carbs than if you had used the thickeners! Several recipes suggest putting the meal over rice or potatoes, but don't add those carbs into the counts because they are not put into the slow cooker, you would have to fix them seperate. Gee folks, I already knew how to modify existing recipes, I wanted something for us diabetics!

Wonderful selections offering a true culinary diversity

Diabetes is controlled through a combination of medication, exercise, weight control, and diet. Indeed, if caught earlier enough, some forms of diabetes can be controlled through exercise and diet without the need for insulin injections. The Everything Diabetes Cookbook is the most "user friendly" of all the diabetes oriented culinary references and offers more than three hundred nutritious recipes and imaginative menu ideas that will please the palate and grace any meal from simple family dining, to celebratory dinners, to holiday party snacks. From Hawaiian-Style Bread; Crab Cakes with Sesame Crust; Nutty Greek Snapper Soup; and Sweet Potato Crisps; to Cranberry-Turkey Sausage; Broccoli-Cauliflower Slaw; Apple Cookies with a Kick; and Peachy Ginger Ale, The Everything Diabetes Cookbook has wonderful selections offering a true culinary diversity completely appropriate for diabetic menu planning all year round.

Really disappointing for Type II Diabetes.

I was very disappointed in this book. It's great for low fat cooking, but not to manage your blood sugar. Her recipes don't use sugar substitues, soy flour, whole wheat flour, fat free cheese or cream and whole wheat pastas (higher fiber foods that are slower to absorb in the bloodstream). Recipe in book required that I alter to reduce the sugars, increase protien and fiber. I alter regular cookbook recipes, and I was hoping that this book would be different. One recipe doubles the carbs/sugars for oatmeal by adding lots of dried fruits. Perhaps sugar substitute, a splash of vanilla and cinnamon, 1/2 cup fresh fruit and a couple tablespoons half n half. This would have less sugar/carbs, but more fiber/protein and the small amount of fat will slow the conversion and absorbtion of sugars into the blood stream. So many other recipes have all-pupose flour, potato flour or potato starch, sugar, honey, and even instant rice. Her zucchini bread has 2 1/2 cups of sugar as well as regular flour...wow! Like I said, really disappointing. It's Low fat focused, not so low sugar. I don't think it's for a diabetic who's really trying to control sugars via diet. It would get 4 stars from me as a NON-Diabetic/Regular diet cookbook.

PAINTED A GLOOMY PICTURE FOR CHILDREN WITH DIABETES

My 6 year old son has had diabetes for 3 years. I ordered this book hoping it would be good to take to school to read to his classmates. It was very nice that the older brother had written this book and yes, the drawings are nice. I found that the book painted a gloomy picture about children with diabetes. Children with diabetes can have candy, they don't have to give up their Halloween treats. Family and friends can learn quickly to care for the child with diabetes. I am going to have to return this book. I feel it would make the kids at school more fearful rather than more comfortable being around my son.

This book is amazing! It was written by the older brother of a 7-year-old who was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes and really captures the emotions of the child and the family as they learn to cope with the disease. The drawings are so charming and overall the story is very uplifting. The diabetes facts are all very accurate too. Every family learning how to deal with diabetes should read this book!

Keep in mind this is a short book- 25 pages. Fairly informative. Is a good, quick read for someone that is not suffering from reactive hypoglylcemia but would like to understand what is going on in another's body. A bit too technical for someone trying to rebalance their body that is being ravaged by the condition. Would reccommend The Low Blood Sugar Handbook by E. Krimmel for simple, practical information on how to manage hypoglycemia.

The best description of my experience since being diagnosed.

The explanation of hypoglycemia in this book is the best explanation I have come across since being diagnosed with it in 1979. The book describes my experience better than the explanation of any of the doctors I've been to (which are many) and better than anything else I've read (which isn't a whole lot). The history of the identification of hypoglycemia by Dr. Seale Harris and the evolution of the medical community's attitudes toward the disease are interesting, but a little confusing.

Roger Mason is right on the money! What does this book teach? Your body has the ability to heal itself if you feed it the right foods. If you're willing to ear right, exercise and take appropriate supplements, you can have normal sugar levels. For me, it boiled down to just a few things. Eliminate "all" forms of sugar from the diet. Eat 100% whole grain foods. Eat legumes. Eat fish. Avoid high-glycemic foods. Exercise. Eat whole fruit after one year of Roger's diet. The author is a no-nonsense guy who deals with research and double-blind studies. He knows what he's talking about.

A Slave To My Condition!

Review Date: 2003-03-01
Wow! Let's talk about being enslaved to a disease process! It's a wonder this guy has enough energy to deal with his daily routine, not to mention all of his secondary problems! This is a very intimidating and inaccurate account of daily life as an Insulin Dependent Diabetic. The author, who I know, is a Type 2 or non-insulin dependent diabetic, who for some reason believes she knows exactly how to approach life as a Type 1 Diabetic. Her portrayal of this young man and his disease process, would scare most Type 1 diabetics into a stress driven diabetic coma!! I am a Type 1 Diabetic, now for 30 years, and I would not recommend this book to any of my friends, or my Patients! That's correct, I said my Patients! I am a very successful and well respected Physician Assistant, and I have dedicated my practice to caring for Diabetic individuals. I personally did not appreciate the Authors attempt at degrading the PA profession on page 322 of the book, by making the PA appear negligent in missing the diagnosis of Diabetic Ketoacidosis. This was in extremely poor taste!! Personally, I would not suggest this book to any Diabetic individual or family member, due to the fear that it would produce, in regards to glucose management. I'm sorry Dr. Jerkins, but my Glycohemoglobin is 6.0, and I don't recall the last time I had a glucose tablet or felt the need to test my glucose some 12 to 15 times per day! The story line, by the way, is fairly exciting. Thus the rating of 2 stars instead of 1.

This book was written in the 1990s. Things have changed. And for the better. The little girl in this book has many problems with being different from her cousins by having diabetes. Guess what? In 2008, kids feel different if they don't have an allergy, asthma, thyroid problems, glasses, or speech problems. This book may be appropriate if your child is already having a hard time sharing her story about diabetes, however, I think the world is a different place for kids with diabetes and I would discourage anyone to put ideas into their kids heads about being upset to have diabetes. Yes it sucks to get shots all day long for the rest of your life, but we are sending a bad message for kids to feel sorry for themselves thru this book. Taking Diabetes to School has a much better message about Diabetes being okay.

Good book but not the best.

Review Date: 2007-09-12
The book is good but not the best. Let me tell you what's in it. First of all it comes from an evolutionary standpoint. The book is filled with legitimate questions about sugar consumption and what are the implications on our bodies. From the beginning the book talks about contries with high sugar consumption like the US and UK. After about half of the book it gets into facts and figures. It's clear cut by and large by pinpointing the reasons for our high diseases with sugar consumption JUST NOT FORCEFULLY ENOUGH FOR ME THOUGH. The words don't jump at you. Overall I get the fact that sugar is bad for a person, so it not the best book but OK.

An Oldie But A Goodie!

John Yudkin was one of the pioneer researchers examining the link between sugar and various degenerative illnesses. As far back as 1957 he showed that sugar consumption in England was more closely associated with coronary heart disease than the widely-blamed saturated fats from animal foods. Easy to read and straight to the point, Yudkin's book is every bit as relevant today as it was in the 70's; consumption of refined sweeteners is just as high today as it was back then, and the prevalence of diabetes is now at unprecendented levels. "Sweet and Dangerous" is out of print, but I would highly recommend you pick up a second-hand copy and read it along with the classic "Sugar Blues" by William Dufty (still in print).

I recently picked this cookbook up looking for good low-cal healthy recipes, and did I hit the jackpot! I've tried a half dozen or more of the recipes, and shared the delicous treats with friends and family. Everyone is asking for copies of the recipes! I haven't hit a bad one yet! To die for are the Lemon-Raspberry Tiramisu, Lemon-Cranberry Bars, (Dessert first of course!)The Moroccan Turkey with Cucumber Sauce, Crabcakes and Crab Canapes were delicious as well.

All recipes feature common ingredients that you will easily have around the house with easy to follow steps. The book is also loaded with fabulous full color photos, which I prefer in a cookbook.

If you are on some kind of Healthy plan and are thinking of using this book to help you plan your eating when you are not at home, think again. The last revision of the book was in 1991 and several of the Restarurants and Brands listed no longer exist. Of those that do, watch out. This book includes listings for menu items which no longer exist, or which were changes within the last few years.

Unless this book is updated, this is not a good resource.

Let me start by saying this book has been a big help in my diet. However, I did not realize just how old the book was. It does not have many of the latest food obviously. I would have gotten a newer book if I noticed the publishing date.

Too old to be of any use

Almost nothing in this book is current enough to be helpful. You are much better off using the online sites of the food manufacturers and restaurants and, if necessary, doing the math to figure out how the carbs, proteins, and fats translate into food exchanges.

Don't waste your money.
