Ms. McGary's Healthy HomeStyle Cookbook is a great resource for healthy diets. Her recipes are flavorfully made using whole
ingredients with less fat and sugar than standard versions. They are easy to make, practical for busy people, diabetic or
not. Nutritional profiles are included with each recipe. McGary's book of recipes has made a wholesome contribution for people
seeking balance and good nutrition without sacrificing flavor or enjoyment.

Childhood and adolescent obesity presents one of the most challenging and frustrating problems in medical practice. Obesity
has particular concern, because of the health risk associated with it, such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia,
diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, pulmonary and renal problems, surgical risks and degenerative joint disease. All
in all obesity causes significant morbidity and also a decreased life-expectancy.
Obesity is a major public health problem and recent data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in United States suggest that 22 % of children and adolescents are overweight and 11 % obese. Concerning overweight among the general population the survey revealed that between 1987 to 1993 the overweight prevalence increased 3.3 % for men and 3.6 % for women. The total overweight prevalence among American male is now 33 % and for females 36 %.
This is an impressive book on a subject that is "close to our stomach". It is devided into six parts: Epidemiology, diagnosis, appetite regulation and obesity prevention, pathogenesis and types of obesity, complications and management with a total of 35 chapter written by 63 international experts from numorous professions. The editor is professor at the University of Gottenburg in Sweden with an interesting review chapter on the centralization of body far, besides from his imortant role as editor.
The layout is good, the chapters easy to read and the editor did an excellent work in order to give an up-to-date review of this field with perspectives for further research and interventions. We very much liked the idea of including e-mail addresses in the list of authors for further personal communication with each author. We would like to see separate chapters on obesity in children and adolescents, in persons with intellectual disability and in persons with Down syndrome in the next edition.
This book will become a resource book for professionals working in the area of clinical, research and academic work in the field of obesity. ...

this cookbook by jenny craig is fantastic. i am on jenny craig right now and while i am not diabetic, it does run in the
family; better safe than sorry. so far i have used the french toast recipe and the ground beef recipe. it offers advice/exchanges
on carbohydrates, proteins, dairy, meats and their substitutes, fruits and veggies and a new category. OTHER. i highly recommend
this book to anyone who wants to lose weight and is diabetic or has family members who are diabetic. THIS BOOK EXPLAINS HOW
CARBOHYDRATES CAN AFFECT BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS FOR DIABETICS. to me that is more important than a low carb fad diet. there has
to be meaning to it. this puts it into perspective.

I'm Beth Roybal, the author. I'd like to provide a little more info about this book. MDYWWB is not just another "program."
Instead, I focus on trying to help you identify the areas in your life that are most likely to make controlling type 2 diabetes
difficult--and then I review strategies that you can pick and choose from to tailor your own approach. I have a vested interest
in this book, as my mom has diabetes and I'm considered at risk ("prediabetes"). I've been writing on various health topics
for years, and my approach is to be friendly, casual, and sometimes even funny. The goal is to help you help yourself in living
with this disease. Take a look inside the book--I think you'll like it, and I hope you find it useful!

An authoritative commentry by over fifty North American physicians on the latest treatment strategies for type I and Type
II diabetes mellitus. The format of the book is logical, covering the various aspects and challenges faced in the clinical
environment. The "Special Settings" section was of particular value.
Starting with a broad overview of the disease in the year 2000 and beyond, the text shifts to canvassing the diagnosis, treatment and complications associated with this increasingly common disease.
The use of diagrams and tables aided digestion of the topics and the overall format of the piece in the hardback form was of high quality.

All the main characters in the stories have type 1 diabetes. The characters encounter different situations where they have to learn to control their diabetes or ASK FOR HELP.
I recommend that parents read this book. What struck me the most, was how many stories are about kids that "can" do their own care but still want/need their parent's help. Many of the kids in the stories stopped taking care of themselves until the climax of the plot when they finally admitted to their parents they needed help.
If you order this book for your child, read it. At the least, discuss the stories with him or her. We discussed each story with our son and I was amazed at how much he related to the kids in the stories already.
The stories were written before lantus and the insulin pump so my son did have trouble understanding why the kid wasn't allowed a cupcake or such. He doesn't remember being on NPH and regular. Diabetes care has come far! It would be useful if the author would update the book to include the new treatments.
I am giving it four stars, not five because the stories were not the best I've ever read. But this is a valuable book.
