Maturity onset or Type 2 diabetes is a manageable disease. The Type 2 Diabetes Sourcebook, which has been completely and recently updated, guides you step-by-step through its management, explaining the steps you can take to keep yourself healthy and well on a day-to-day basis. You can successfully manage maturity onset or Type 2 diabetes using the information presented in this book. Type 2 diabetes is a complicated disease to manage, but scientific understanding of how to treat diabetes has come a long way in the past few years. The tools you use to help yourself are very simple to understand and apply, and educating yourself will combat the fear and dread associated with the presence of any chronic disease

Good self-management involves several tools-blood testing, diet, exercise, stress reduction, and medications. All these elements are simple in themselves, but they must be coordinated to be most effective. The Type 2 Diabetes Sourcebook gives you solid information to help you coordinate these elements in a good, healthy program of self-management, in conjunction with your medical doctor and your treatment team.

Keith S. Richman, M.D., M.P.H., past president of the American Diabetes Association's San Fernando Valley chapter, has called this book "one of the most useful books I've ever read on the self-management of Type 2 or adult-onset diabetes." Dr. Richman described The Type 2 Diabetes Sourcebook as "packed with an amazing amount of solid medical information." He concluded, "This wonderfully supportive book guides you step-by-step through the successful self-management of diabetes in partnership with your physician. The Type 2 Diabetes Sourcebook belongs on the bookshelf of every person with diabetes."

The Type 2 Diabetes Sourcebook includes the types of testing you and your medical team should do, what the results of these tests mean, and how to take care of yourself in a day-to-day program of good nutrition, sensible exercise, and personal hygiene are included here.

Fear is the enemy of self-management. The Type 2 Diabetes Sourcebook meets that fear with solid medical information supplied by leading organizations such as the American Diabetes Association and the American Dietetic Association. The "Patient's Bill of Rights," listing the type of medical examinations you should receive and tests which should be given to you is included, as is information on managing possible complications, gestational diabetes, and more.

These days, medical doctors who are pressed to treat more patients in less time often don't have the time to answer many simple basic questions about the biology and management of Type II diabetes. This book combats ignorance and fear with the latest solid scientific and medical information. The Type 2 Diabetes Sourcebook will help empower people with maturity onset diabetes, so that they may ultimately help themselves.

The Type 2 Diabetes Sourcebook was written by David Drum, the author of several medical books, and Terry Zierenberg, RN, CDE, a well-known registered nurse and certified diabetes educator. For many years, Terry Zierenberg served as program coordinator for the Encino-Tarzana Hospital's Diabetes Care Center, the largest and most comprehensive diabetes care program in Los Angeles.

I read this book in 10 minutes and passed it along to a friend. It's completely accurate and highly readable, but WOW, is it simple. You feel like coloring in it. It's one tip per page - literally.

A very well organized book with information you cannot find in any standard textbook about this common disease.
Only shortfall: being tailored to UK readers more than overseas (including US) readers.

My 12 year old son was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He thought there would be nothing that he liked that he could eat. This book has been a great help and he enjoys alot of the recipes. He is such a picky eater but with this book it makes food interesting for the whole family to enjoy.

The recipes in this cookbook look delicious if somewhat complicated. I haven't had the book long enough to try them. However, one very important piece of information is missing from these recipes; serving size. I'm sure that there are programs which show this. In fact, I'm so disappointed that I would be willing to pay for a list of portions so that I might add this information to my favorite recipes.

Although cookbooks for diabetics are useful, but not one fits all as humans are the variable and what works for one just may not work for others. Foods effect people in a variaty of ways in diabetes. so some may find they have higher sugar levels on one receipt and lower on others. While some menus may cause weight gain, etc. all involving medications and the reaction on the person reading the book. As a result all must work it out for themselves and not assume that following a published cook book will be a full answer.

Canadian Diabetes Source Book, a must for Canadian Diabetics
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-13
First let me say that there are many books written on Type 2 diabetes but most are US authors. Its great to have a book written for Canadian. There are some subtle differences on how the US and Canadians approach diabetes as well as some of the products that are available.

This book offers up the standard fair for diabetics. So like many of the other books on the market it really is not that much difference. What sets the book apart is that it uses Canadian References, measurements and guidelines. This is important to know when you are trying to research the diease.

If you are going to get one book and are Canadian this book would be the one to buy, it offers up a wide variety of subjects. From What is Diabetes, diet, exercise, medicines and how to live with the diasease.

This book is an excellent choice for the newly diagnosed diabetic or anyone interested in diabetes. It should be the first book read after being diagnosed. It is very clear and easy to read-no technical words and jargon. Gets reader on track for the beginning of one's new lifestyle change. Easy to understand and answers all basic questions. I wish I had discovered it early in my diagnosis.
