Bought this book but thought it would be like most other diet books which you read but never put into practice. However, it is simply written and thr diet, although not really aa "diet" is realistic and easy to follow on a daily basis. This low carb diet does work as well, within a few weeks the results were obvious and my cholestrol had fallen. Definetly recommend this book to anyone wanting to lose weight and reduce cholesterol.

Not another diet but a lifestyle change

I was recommended this book a couple of years ago from a friend and have always been grateful. Instead of reading like a diet guide the author explains GI and why certain foods should not be eaten together etc.The recipes are very tasty, however do require plenty of preparation and thought as opposed to a low fat diet. It has helped me maintain a healthy weight and encouraged me to finally cut out extra sugar and coffee!

Easy to read & worked for me in practice

This book is well written, very easy to read and the logic behind it makes sense. It prescribes eating good carbs, avoiding bad carbs, separating protein & carbs in a meal, and waiting a certain period of time before switching from a protein meal to a carb meal & vice versa.

Once you get the knack of all that, it's easy to do and I found it removed my sugar swings/low blood sugar episodes altogether. However you do need to stick to the plan religiously to lose weight from it.

Proper meal planning is more than a just good nutritional practice for a healthy lifestyle. For diabetics, proper eating is a vital element and mandatory aspect for the care and control of their medical condition. Now in an updated and expanded second edition, the American Diabetes Association's Magic Menus For People With Diabetes continues to be a complete and authoritative reference and resource for complete meal planning offering diabetes appropriate menus for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Clear and concise directions are provided for adjusting calorie levels to individual needs. Also provided are carb totals for each meal and snack because keeping carb totals consistent affects keeping blood glucose levels in check. From Easy Spud Breakfast; Veggie Pizza; and Chicken-Fried Steak with Pan Gravy; to Light and Creamy Yogurt Pie; Bean Burgers; and Macedonia Fruit Cup, Magic Menus For People With Diabetes will prove to be a popular addition to any diabetic's cookbook collection.

This book is as advertised (actually, has more variety and more actually usable recipes without a lot of specialty ingredients or weird things the kids in the family will refuse than I expected).

75 Dinners, 50 Lunches, 50 Breakfasts and 30 Snacks.

Not a good book for Type 2 diabetics lmiting carbs (each meal is 50 grams of carbohydrates or more)--and definitely not for low carb dieters limiting themselves to 20 carbs a day.

The intent of the book is to take some of the guess work out of meal planning. It fails to get 5 stars from me because I would prefer nutrition counts for each recipe instead of for each menu, probably unfair of me given book title but my family needs count exact carbohydrates and does not use the exchange system.

Helpful Votes: 15 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-27
The book tends to dwell on insignificant, technical matters. Specific data on specific foods is vague and sketchy. A diet book, to be five star, should provide data for at least two levels of difficulty (i.e. a fast paced diet and a moderately paced diet). For each level, at least 200 or 300 common foods should be rated. Portion sizes should be specified. This book covers all the research but does not provide near enough data on specific foods for someone that is dieting. To top it off, the author has an irritating habit rephrasing just about everything.

THIS BOOK PROVIDES A VERY DETAILED OUTLINE OF WHAT THE METABOLIC SYNDROME IS AND EXACTLY HOW IT WREAKS HAVOC ON YOUR HEALTH, IT HAS A VERY CLEAR SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION ON THE METABOLIC PROCESSES OF INSULIN AND ITS REACTION WITH OTHER HORMONES, BASED PRIMARILY ON WHAT YOU EAT. THE PROGRAM OUTLINES A PLAN OF SUPPLEMENTS, EXERCISE, AND DIET. I HAVE BEEN ON THE PROGRAM A LITTLE OVER A WEEK AND MY BLOOD SUGARS HAVE DROPPED SO MUCH THAT I HAD TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF MEDICATION I WAS TAKING. THE DIET BASICALLY CALLS FOR YOU TO GIVE UP SODA, DESERTS, SUGAR, AND TO FOCUS ON WHOLE GRAINS VEGETABLES AND LEAN PROTEIN AND HEALTHY FATS, THIS INFORMATION AND THE EXCELLENT SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATIONS REALLY HELPED TO MOTIVATE ME TO GIVE IT A TRY.

This book was full of helpful recipes for my aunt who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. She has always been a huge fan of pasta and chicken so this book helped her out showing her how she can have the food she wants. Having diabetes strips your freedom to eat what you want and cook books like this give diabetics a choice of recipes rather than a bag of rabbit food.

Excellent variety.

I rated this one five stars based on what I look for in diabetic/low-carb cookbooks (1) has to have complete nutritional information (I don't like just "exchanges" or just a carbohydrate range or just sugarfree...); (2) recipes I will make (a favorite is the Guiltless Brownies with cocoa and bananas) that my family won't bypass or that require too many shopping trips to specialty stores; and (3) variety (I don't need another book telling me a crustless pie with sugarfree pudding or tying to just substitute a sweetener for sugar) -- this one has a variety of menus, lots of different dishes, real food ingredients and a wide range of carbohydrate counts instead of assuming all diabetics are using certain ranges or exchanges or avoiding the same foods. Realistic menus.

The cure for a bad gut is in your brain

I agree with the previous post,it's hard to imagine anyone who still does not know that to feel better one must practice good life habits. But I disagree when the reviewer thinks that the book's message is too redundant in reminding us to do just that. How many people actually follow this even though they know that doing so, will save us plenty of suffering?

If your goal is alleviating the problems stemming from the sensative gut, the book will do what is promises: it will give you points on how to feel better. The most effective solution to many of these disorders (luckily and unfortunately) is consuming less of caffeine, spicy foods, alcohol, practicing relaxation, and exercising more. This might upset someone who expects the book's book's focus be pills and surgery.

It is true, as the reviwer states, there is no cure for some conditions, but many can be helped definitively by habits change. Having suffered from IBS for many years, I can vouch that changing diet was a single most important thing I did for my condition to achieve the ever-elusive relief.

Please don't be discouraged by its small size, it is packed with helpful information, and for the most people will re-confirm what some already know: a combination of habit change and medicine is the only way to go.

Good starting point even though you can get very similar information on MayoClinic's webiste if you are willing to do the search.

Good Information, very well written

This book covers most typical digestive disorders. It provides plenty of information about the underlying physiological basis for these ailments as well as details on diagnostic procedures and treatment. The author uses a sensible approach and does not try to solve the problems with miracle cures. Rather he talks about the benefits of and concerns with the various treatments. I think there is valuable information in this book for anyone with digestive maladies. I have read half a dozen books on this topic and this was the best on reflux (followed very closely by Cheskin and Lacy's Healing Heartburn).

Nicely done but not very useful.

This book gives a great overview of the various digestive maladies (and how there is no cure for most of them). But I cannot imagine anyone who has a reason to buy this book not knowing (1) they should avoid coffee & greasy/spicy food, (2) try to relax and (3) get plenty of excercise.

As W.C. Fields opined, "There's only one cure for insomnia; get plenty of sleep!"

This is the easiest to use reference of this kind that I've found. It alphabetizes by food as well as by kind of food - i.e. "spaghetti", or "Italian food", etc. It also has portion size and Glycemic LOAD - which is more useful than just the Glycemic Index. This is my #1 pick for this kind of information, and the package is also small and affordable.

The book, not only has recipes for delicious sounding desserts, but also useful cooking hints and information. As a confirmed 'sweet-a-holic', I must say that after reading this book, my outlook for dealing with the diabetes is definitely brighter! Thank you, Lois Soneral. ...

There are two reasons why every diabetic should own this book: (1) It is the best source I've found to combat what is manifest with every disease: denial! You cannot read this and continue to behave in ways that guarantee diabetes complications. (2) Its print is large enough for those of us whose eyesight has been compromised by diabetes.

A diary-entry type look into the turmoils of dealing with diabetes while also trying to lead a "normal" life..

Review Date: 2008-08-20
Katherine Marple weaves a story of love and loss. The main character struggles with her past home life as a child and where she stands in life as a young adult, while also coping with the difficulties of diabetes. She has been with her boyfriend for many years and they have grown in many ways together. She starts to feel stagnant and self-doubt, and wonders if there is more out there.

The story is written as a glimpse into her inner thoughts and fears. The medical notes are detailed and would probably benefit a person who also struggles with diabetes, kind of like an inner circle. The emergency scenes feel very real and scary.

The main character tosses herself into an age-old question of love: Do you stay with the relationship that is shaky but fills you with passion, or do you go with the one who brings you stability and confidence in yourself? A question that undoubtedly has crossed many minds.

Strong Narrative- Great Story

"Wretched (this is my sorry)" by Katherine Marple was intricating woven. I enjoyed the medical facts in the story and can personally relate to them. I appreciate there are authors like her out there who are able to look at rare conditions/ situations and keep the facts real and accurate. I also loved the plot. I loved that we could see the destruction of her relationships that were close to her- the falling apart of her life.

The way the characters are built makes me feel like I know them personally. I feel like I can walk down the street and "bump" into these people- hold actual conversations with them. I can thoroughly relate to her relationships. The narrator is in a very long term relationship; she believes she is with her soul mate- but as they grow up together (I'd say the narrator is in her mid- twenties?) they grow apart from each other and start to fight. Her infatuation with Shane (her boyfriend) is contagious. Even though they argue, we still tend to want them to work it out.
But then there's Drew, the narrator's best friend, who is amazingly confident and patient- and he flirts like crazy. He sounds sexy! I like Drew very much and a part of me wanted them to get together too- for Drew to "fix" her.

I could not put this book down. I do not read as much as some, however when I fall upon a good story, I know it. I was impressed with "Wretched (this is my sorry)" and felt I needed to share.

I love Katherine Marple!

I am quickly becoming Katherine Marple's biggest fan. Since her last book, Test, Wretched (this is my sorry) is bigger, better, and deeper.
The narrator, still not named for the same reasons, I think- it feels like you're going through someone's journal instead of reading a book- is a young woman who has diabetes and is torn between going with the man she loves, or with the man she "gets along with". Marple tours the normal feelings between relationships, again pointing directly at what true love SHOULD be about.
Marple also takes into account the scary side of being a diabetic. The narrator is young, fit, and otherwise very healthy, but diabetes takes over her body as it begins to reject the medications. This made me realize that diabetes is not only about food. There is even an author's note at the beginning of the book that states Marple wanted her readers to learn about diabetes and the complications that can arise.

I am in love with Wretched (this is my sorry). It is by far the best story I have read in a long time. And I love to read!
Wretched is a MUST READ!

Elaine Stritch fans like myself will enjoy this book. It is probably the only autobiography about her to date except her one woman show, Elaine Stritch at Liberty. When Elaine Stritch went off to London, England in the early seventies, her life changed for the better. She met and married the love of her life, John Bay in 1972. He died in 1982 and this book is dedicated to him. By all accounts, it was a happy, successful marriage for 10 years. Elaine Stritch spent most of that time in London. Unfortunately, John died of brain cancer in 1982. This book is wonderful tribute to his life as well. I tried to find out more information about him. By her account, he seemed to be perfect. I enjoyed reading about Elaine's triumph over dealng with her diabetes. Her encounter with Quentin Crisp is quite entertaining to read as well as the other parts of her life. The book was published in 1984 and was long before modern health advances today. She writes the book to help other diabetics cope with it. She is truly a survivor and deserves to be compensated for all trials and tribulations. If you enjoy Elaine Stritch's company even her British comedies or her one woman show, you will enjoy this book about her life. I can't wait for her autobiography. I just hope that there is John Bay out there for me too. If he had lived, she would have probably become a British Dame for her services to drama in England. During those ten years, she was very productive in British theatre, stage, and film. After John's death from brain cancer, she returned home to New York. I only wondered what would have happened if John had lived a little longer. I love Elaine Stritch. Maybe she should become Dame Elaine Stritch for her services to drama and to diabetes. She is a wonderful American treasure and we are all glad to have her back.
