The third updated edition of a classic book on diabetes meal planning is a 'must' in any home diabetic's cookbook collection, as well as for public lending libraries. From understanding portions and label information to menu planning, it holds everything needed to understand and modify a diet.

This book isn't just for diabetics; it's for anyone who wants to learn how to put together a nutritionally sound diet.

You'll come away understanding the Food Pyramid, daily requirements (for starches, carbs, protein, fats; with a explanation of difference between carbs and starches), calorie requirements, glycemix index & load, supplements, reading labels, portion sizes and simple ways to incorporate all this information into your daily life.

I don't understand why this isn't a dieting or nutrition bestseller. Absolutely outstanding

It's not easy eating right for diabetes, but this book can be a big help.

I heard about this book on a local radio show. It sounded good, so I ordered it and have been very pleased. I used the shopping tips in the book and saved $15 on my first trip to the grocery store! There are also 100 wonderful recipes and a week's worth of menus. The recipes are easy and taste great. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to eat right without spending lots of $$$.

Great for anyone -- not just diabetics!

"A Field Guide to Type 1 Diabetes is essentially a crash-course in type 1 diabetes fit into a 200-page, 4-by-9 inch paperback book. The size of the book makes it a bit tricky to read (crack the spine right away to help keep the pages open), but it's filled with good information on every aspect of type 1 diabetes. Though not specifically written for type 1 diabetes in kids, it's still a useful addition to your diabetes library. Also, if you're looking for one book to help relatives understand the management of type 1 diabetes, this is a good place to start. The material is well organized and very easy to understand, yet covers the essentials."

A field guide may be a quick and helpful orientation to the wilderness, but ultimately leave you lost. As someone who is newly diagnosed with diabetes, I wanted all the information I could get about diabetes, its treatment, and suggestions for coping with it. This book left me with more questions than answers. I'd say if you want to help your friends and relatives understand diabetes, this book may be helpful, especially if they have short attention spans. But I wouldn't recommend it for someone who is headed off into the wilderness of learning about diabetes and needs a reliable guide that can help you cope with unexpected dangers.

I purchased this book to assist my mother. She is in the early stages of renal failure. The techniques are very easy to follow, and thanks to the techniques, along with following a low potassium diet, her renal stats have improved. Highly recommend !

Really good, so far

I give this book 4 stars so far. My mom was hospitalized 2 weeks ago with kidney failure and must reduce her potassium. The book arrived today, and I was able to tell her how to take most of the K out of potatoes (86-95% reduction depending on type), which she has been missing mightily.

The main demineralization method is to slice foods thinly, soak, discard water, cook the food, discard the water. We will have to see how it does (in flavor) for things like cheese (soak cheese in water?) But it's sure worth a try if it lets her eat food she loves and gives her back some flavor.

It may also be a useful book for relatives of kidney patients, in whom kidney disease is underdiagnosed.

A 'MUST' for anyone who must reduce salt or other minerals

When excess food minerals must be reduced, this book shows you how to do it without reducing portion size.

This book should be the Number One book for all dialysis dietitians and nutritional professionals who are dealing with people who need to control potassium, phosphorus, or sodium in their diet.

I found the idea of an anthropologist having the opportunity to observe operations in a French biotech institution as things unfolded very enticing. At times I wished that I had a better background in philosophy since Rabinow makes frequent references to certain philosophers in a few chapters which I found challenging to read. Nevertheless, the event that Rabinow covers is an interesting one, and he gives a very good picture of how the French view bioscience, the human body, and the commercialization of biotech products. In particular I enjoyed his descriptions and insights on the interactions of the people involved in the event and how it fit in the overall context of French society.

I really loved Rabinow's MAKING PCR, about the process of developing this major biotech tool (and probably a more accurate look at Kary Mullis than he gives in his own autobiography). FRENCH DNA is a terrific book in a different way. Rabinow tells an exciting and sobering story, virtually a who-done-it, and along the way he raises important questions about what genetic material really is, who owns it, what it means to have international research collaborations, and what biotechnology means to individuals and nations. A fascinating book.

A great followup to Doug's other books which continues his discussion about the problems fungi can cause in our lives. Interesting information for all patients with diabetes to consider. Doug does a good job researching his information and has helped many people fight their illnesses. While not a substitute for other treatments, I believe it's important to consider as many options as possible.

This book is not ONLY for people with diabetes
Helpful Votes: 27 out of 27 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-25

While this book is aimed mainly at diabetes, there is a lot of important information included for people with heart, blood pressure and circulatory problems as well. Most of the information included here is theories, but they are theories that make much more sense than the ones currently being used by the medical profession, and are backed up by medical research. This is information that is not available in too many places, and I think it is very important that people know and understand these things BEFORE they make decisions as to the health care treatment they will receive.

The diet Doug sets forth is in line with most other alternative diets, and is very reasonable, given all the information he sets forth in his book. Doug believes in finding the cause of diseases, and treating them, first off by diet. Many times diet can actually cure problems that the medical profession does nothing but treat the symptoms of, let alone cure!

I would strongly urge people to study and consider Doug's theories in treatment of their illnesses. I also strongly recommend his other books. Doug cares very much about healing people; his sincerity is obvious, if you have ever seen his TV show. I would give this book a heartfelt recommendation to anyone who is suffering from diabetes, pre diabetes, or heart/blood pressure/circulatory conditions, as well as people who want to help someone they know who is suffering from these conditions. My daughter (age 29) was diagnosed with diabetes last week. I just read the book and am giving her mine, and ordering another one for me.

Are hidden toxins in our food making us sick?

Important book to read if you are concerned
about diabetes, or know someone who has it.
The information on treating this condition
including a list of natural supplements, plus
the diet to help control diabetes makes
this book a bargain at any price.

The information about what we are eating
and how this may determine whether or not
we may develop diabetes is something
everyone needs to read. A toxin often found
in our food supply may be making us sick!
Scientists, needing to find mice with diabetes
in order to study it, have to induce it in
the mice by injecting them with this same toxin
that is in our food supply.
Does a constant exposure of this same toxin in
our food on a daily basis do the same thing to us???

Book info : 3rd edition published in 2004.
Pre required knowledge: ISO 9001:2000; 6 Sigma, Performance excellence.
Purchased price : USD 13,00
General : The book is written in a manor that half way the book you get bored. It uses quite a lot of abbreviations so that the author can show you how good he is.

Book content:
The book has got 6 chapters. Chapter 1 (13% of book content) gives a summary of the quality and management systems that have been introduced in the past century (over 30). It describes the creator of the system and it strengths and weaknesses.

Chapter 2 (16%) describes why quality systems were introduced in the industrial revolution, by government regulations and sector/customer specific. It also handles the migration from government and sector specific quality systems to general quality systems.

Chapter 3 (25%) shows that there is more then "document what we do, and do what is documented" and introduces management systems on top of quality systems. It handles the basics of Statistical Quality Control, Total quality Control, Total Quality Management, Lean , JIT and six Sigma.

Chapter 4 (12%) discusses awards like The Malcolm Baldrige National quality Award, what the requirements are for the award. Then these award specifications are compared with Six Sigma and ISO 9001:2000 and how they relate to an organisations Strategic, tactical and operational level.

Chapter 5 (13%) handles change management and what the key success factors are to achieve a successful change management.

Chapter 6 (21%) finally gives you a model for implementing fusion management, the part where you're waiting for. It is very specific and detailed; Not bad at all!

If you get passed the first four chapters you will be rewarded in chapters 5 and 6. Maybe my expectations were to high, based on the other reader's reviews, but if you are able to purchase this book for a reasonable price I recommend it.

There have been so many management and quality theories over the years - but nobody has told us how they all fit together - in fact they always bad mouth different programs. This book tells how different quality philosophies build on one another. It also has real world examples of how to effectively implement ISO, Six Sigma and "Fusion Management". With the current economy and layoffs I'm ready to use the roadmap to get my company back on track. It is a good quick read, with interesting case studies (I read it on a four hour flight). It may be the most usable business book I've read in quite a long time.

Quality Management

As a long-term quality assurance professional, I was pleased to find in Fusion Management a book that does a good job of describing the chronological progression of, and linkages between, the various quality assurance paradigms and programs, e.g., Reengineering, Lean, ISO 9000, TQM, Six Sigma, etc. Dr. Marash describes the components of the programs and evaluates and recommends specific elements of past programs for incorporation into current quality program thinking. After a good review of quality history, Dr. Marash offers a compilation of the better elements of the better quality programs and describes how they can be synergistically integrated. He concludes with a step-by-step description of how to perform Fusion Management in your own company by identifying, selecting and integrating the "best of the best" in quality programs. This is a solid and well-presented book chocked full of quality information.

Good information and advice
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 28 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-19
This book provides an excellent resource for Type II diabetics. The first section clearly explains essential information needed to manage diabetes and especially nutritional and dietary approaches. The author makes good arguments for balancing carbohydrates with fat and fiber, the advantages of mono-unsaturated fats, and especially that sugar alone is not the enemy. The role of the glycemic index is stressed and how foods that have lower indices are also likely to make you feel less hungry longer. The nutritional goals and strategies are easy to read and absorb. The book however falls short of its potential in the sections which describe how to implement all this advice. Quantitative information on nutritional content and glycemic index are presented inside the text in 3 long tables of every food known to man which are repetitive and disturb the flow of reading the text. These should have been combined into a single table highlighting foods high in fiber and low in index; as it stands one must flip back and forth to figure out which foods provide what. There is a lot of good information here - especially useful is a list of best tasting foods that are "light" - one can look for substitute brands for foods in one's own present diet, which are thus likely to be used. There is some information presented on how to balance some meals e.g. adding cram cheese to a bagel actualy helps! However, one is left to figure out meal plans and menus, where the book could have really helped with suggestions for a week of menus for several of the stategies suggested. All in all, this was a very helpful book, but it could have been MUCH better with a little more organization and detail.

The most helpful diet guide I've found yet!

Review Date: 2000-04-16
I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes two and a half years ago. My first response was to research diet, nutrition and exercise as means of controlling my blood sugar. I've gone through dozens of books since then, and this is the first one I've found that actually pulls the information together in a practical way that works for me.

There are hundreds of diabetic cookbooks and meal planners on the market. The problem is that different people will have different responses to certain combinations of carbs, fat, and protein in their diets. This book takes the time to explain why some diabetics may need to have as little as 30% of their daily calories coming from carbohydrates, while others may need to have as much as 60% of their daily calories from carbs. The author also talks about the effect fiber has on glucose levels, and her system for balancing a diabetic diet relies on counting carbohydrates, calories, and fiber rather than exchanges.

Many other books provide menus and specific meal plans. The big problem with that approach, from my point of view, is that it can be very difficult to apply those meal plans to a family situation. This book focuses on strategies rather than specific menus, which allows me to control my diet more effectively even when I am in unexpected situations.

This book is invaluable for people who work in diabetes education and who often think about doing behavioural research. Bradley provides an excellent introduction into the psychometric concepts involved in designed questionnaires and other kinds of measures. This is not a book examining psychological aspects of diabetes but rather a compendium of diabetes-specific measures (including quality of life, psychological functioning, attitudes and beliefs and behavioural outcomes).
