I highly reccommend you add this to your library, and share with your friends. Let's face it, most Americans don't exercise, and many are
just afraid to start. This gives compelling reasons to do so.

This book was OK but I have a few complaints that really bothered me. First, it's written in almost too easy to read language (5th grade-ish). Second, some of the illustrations are laughable (lifting soupcans). Third, the references to training programs that coincide with cars (SUV training, Truck training...). Fourth, too many stories about Joe So-and-so (who did this and that) to illustrate points.

From chapter 3 up until the chapter titled, "Your Exercise Prescription" I was pleased, but the points I mentioned leave a somewhat bad taste in my mouth.

Insighful and Extremely Helpful!

Once in a great while a book so powerful comes along that it moves our lives in a new direction and reinvigerates us towards action. Dr. Goldberg's book is just such an example. With fluid use of language and stunning insights into what we can do better as humans, along with usefully displayed examples with true models, Golberg shows us how to conquer the obstacles that have become the bain of 21st century American existence: disease riddled lives due to the inactivity and complacency that surrounds modern humanity. This monument of a work clearly puts Goldberg in the small group of modern American doctors such as Dr. Ruth, C. Everett Koop, and Dr. Dolittle that have had such a surprisingly significant impact on everyday life while coming at their topic from the field of medicine. I praise this giant piece of work and the equally large man and his effort that went forth towards its' creation. God Bless Linn Goldberg. Cheers.

The Kids Choice Cookbook is an excellent book for anyone! Even though I do not have diabetes (I have hypoglycemia), this book had TONS of tasty recipes and tips for healthy eating. All the recipes are very easy to make and have step-by-step instructions, so even little kids can learn to cook healthy foods and snacks. I also like how the author lists the exchanges for every recipe, so you don't have to guess. This book would be a great gift for a kid, newly diagnosed with diabetic. I highly recommend it!

I have never enjoyed a cookbook more! It brought back all those warm fun times I had cooking, with my mother and especially my grandmother, as a child. I love Mr. Radish and his "did you know?" and "just for fun" tips. I work in healthcare and I see time and again adult diabetic patients whose diets are inadequate and unhealthy. If we can instill in the children a love of cooking and empower them to make healthy food choices I believe it will positively affect every aspect of their lives. This cookbook can be a BIG step in that direction. I must note that I gift this cookbook to all the children in my life (nephews, friends kids, etc.) as healthy eating and alot of fun are good things for all children! I also recommend Colleen Bartley's cookbook for big kid's called First Choice...but that's a review for another day. Enjoy the good eats!

This book is very well written and a easy read. The drug information is good for anyone on a type 2 drug. He puts a very human face of the struggles with this condition. Byetta looks like it is a good fit for many type 2.

David Mendosa is a very well educated lay expert about diabetes, and he provides an important service here explaining why most drugs treating Type II diabetes cause weight gain. He has personally had an outstanding experience with the new drug Byetta and this book is mainly about that experience. But he does not give enough coverage to the poor result that many patients who have used Byetta have had. Nor does he mention the small group of Byetta users who have experienced severe pancreatitis attributed to using Byetta. Byetta is a new drug, with little long-term use in the population, and while it may turn out to be a fantastic long-term drug, it is too soon to endorse it in such a glowing way as Mendosa's book. Most of us who are dealing with this disease are looking for an answer, but are sometimes to willing to become guinea pigs.

I get David's newsletters and noticed that he had a new book coming out, 'Losing Weight with Your Diabetes Medication', I thought anything he writes would be worth reading so pre-ordered it.

I have to say that I live in England where Byetta is just being prescribed so I thought that the information might come handy in the future.

I have to confess I'm only half way through the books but I can't stop raving about what I have read so far. He explains Byetta so simply and his one recipe in the book has come as a G-dsend because I have real problems finding foods that I can eat as a type 2 diabetic.

I've recommended this book to every diabetic I know on all the message boards I belong to.

It's a must read for all type 2s.

One fantastic piece of news? I was called today by the diabetes nurse and have been put on to Byetta.

All I can say is thank you David for this wonderful book.

(Published in the newsletter of American Mensa's Diabetes Special Interest Group)

I expected to like this book. I've been a fan of David Mendosa's writings for several years, and how can you argue with a book about weight loss written by a man who has lost over 100 pounds? So I posed a tough question when I started. I'm a diabetes writer also, although on a much smaller scale; I initially lost 30 pounds (which has stayed off) on Byetta, but my weight loss then stopped. Does this book contain any new or helpful information for me?

In the past, I haven't liked diabetes books that 1) lost me in pages of technical terms and numbers, 2) included lengthy anecdotes and case histories that might be irrelevant or even unsafe to use as models, or 3) gave so many recipes that I found I'd bought a cookbook instead of the information I was seeking.

This book does none of those things. There's a lot of detail about the history of diabetes, current drugs and treatment options, and it's all based on solid research. But the research is in the Endnotes section, where it doesn't interfere with the reading. The personal anecdotes are brief and on point, and the author gives only one recipe, a breakfast dish whose main ingredient may surprise you.

It's written in a clear and engaging style, with bits of humor and some behind-the-scenes peeks at the drug industry. I enjoyed the story of Dr. John Eng, the discoverer of Byetta; the doctor was unaware of the drug's weight loss benefit until much later, when it appeared during clinical trials. But Dr. Eng is unable to prescribe Byetta himself, because it's not on the formulary of the Veterans' Administration where he has spent his career.

If you're diabetic and overweight, this may be the only book you'll need to start you off toward better health. The main thread of the book, of course, is the author's own journey and an outline of his current diabetic routines: diet, exercise, medication, and the reasoning behind them all. But you won't be bored, and I picked up several new techniques to try. There are many good books about diabetes; David Mendosa traveled the weight loss road himself before drawing the map for others, and that perspective is invaluable.

I am really enjoying this cookbook. I think you need to use it in conjunction with a book that has more information about diabetes and food components, (even if they contain meat recipes) however, the recipes in this book are wonderful. I tried vegetarian cookbooks and experienced difficulty with my diabetes. With this book and more study, I can live without meat. I have not found any other vegetarian books on the market and am grateful to have found this one.

This book has a recipe for vegetable stock that is worth its price alone. It will save a lot of money to make this myself.

This book supplied me with some much-needed advice on preparing meatless meals for a diabetic. However, ADA guidelines (as explained to me by a dietician) now use the number of carbohydrates as a guideline for most meals and this book failed to list the carbohydrate content of any of the dishes, which was a disappointment to me. Otherwise, I feel the book is a good start for someone who finds they are at a loss on how to prepare dishes which are both meatless and suitable for diabetics.

Buying Month of Meals and its companion, the Betty Crocker Diabetes Cookbook, was a great way for my husband and me to learn more about diabetes. I liked the way the book was segmented so you can mix and match meal plans for breakfast, dinner, and supper by flipping the top, middle or bottom of a page. With 30 days of ideas, there is enough variety to keep a diet interesting. Sometimes we don't like a specific recipe, but we like the ingredients and use them in a way that still meets the book's intent. Excellent guide.

At first glance Every Day's A Holiday Diabetic Cookbook might seem a Christmas title - but it's far more; it promotes making every meal 'holiday' through flavorful, healthy food. Mr. Food is best known for his earlier 'guy food' books on how the basic bachelor male could whip up a gourmet meal with few ingredients or knowledge: with this and his prior Quick And Easy Diabetic Cooking, he moves in a healthier direction, lending his focus on flavor and speed and appeal to a diabetic's healthy requirements. From Garlic-Crusted Cornish Hens to Champagne Turkey, Creamy Spinach Soup and Balsamic Pork, the dishes sound complicated and fancy - but complicated, they are not! Packed with flavor and appeal - and some of the appeal lies in the super-quick preparation times!

This book has been a blessing to me. Having lost some weight, I really wanted a book that emphasized great food and low cal. What better way than a book for diabetics. An easy way to reduce sugar and calories, even though I am not diabetic. And who better to bring you great food and EASY to prepare food than MR Food. I immediately made the chicken cordon bleu. Swore I'd never have time to prepare it late one evening and feed 3 starving children. Yet somehow it came together in 30 minutes and tasted amazing....better to me than restaurant eats and so easy! My picky kids loved it as well as the steak tips recipe....and they dislike veggies normally!

This book does have alot of great recipes in it, but that is because they are old standbys, at least at my house. I do enjoy the fact that it has the nutritional information listed, which I wish more recipe books would follow suit. And the little tips at the bottom of each page are interesting. Most all of the recipes are fairly simple and this would be a great starter book.

When my doctor told me my blood glucose level was above normal, I was absolutely stunned -- and panicked. This book was a tremendous help as far as getting informed and taking proactive measures. My glucose was much lower after taking this advice, and it has stayed there.

DO also read about glycemic index and especially GLYCEMIC LOAD (great resources online, especially) and learn what foods are your friends. Your glucose level is quite manageable if you learn the basics and find the discipline to develop a new lifestyle.

What's the difference between 'prediabetes' and all-out diabetes? Can a diagnosis of 'prediabetes' be reversed? These and other questions are answered in a survey which includes an overview of diabetes risks and health factors but provides a welcome focus on the state of health which leads into diabetes. Chapters explain blood sugars, risk factors, and provide a plan to avoid developing diabetes. This should be a 'must' for any overweight person, or those with a family predisposition to diabetes.

This book does have some good information, but in my opinion, it's only suitable for someone who knows absolutely nothing about diabetes or health in general, and who doesn't consider himself a "reader." Sweet Blood & Fury is essential reading for anyone with insulin-dependent, Type 1 diabetes. Anyone with Type 2 diabetes, or just with "high blood sugar" short of full-blown diabetes, will also find it invaluable. And if you are simply a person who loves someone with diabetes, you will find this book extremely helpful in understanding the emotional impact of this disease. The short summary of the book might be "It's okay to be angry about having diabetes, and in fact anger may help you to get the best treatment and keep yourself as healthy as possible." Mary Frances Connors has learned some very valuable lessons about being a strong advocate for one's own health care, and she's a compassionate teacher willing to bare her soul to share those lessons with us. We can relate to her very well because she's so human -- even though she's a registered nurse and highly self-educated about the nature of diabetes, she still has to fight off that urge to delve into a bag of cookies, and sometimes succumbs. She shows us how she -- and we -- can forgive ourselves and keep trying and working for the most optimal health and happiness we can achieve.

TYPE 4 DIABETES is a great book. I won't bother telling what interesting reading it is; my concern is what follows this book. Bob Ranson and his doctors stopped short of the next step: that is, where does blood glucose act?
Glucose is the energy source of the cell. Though glucose is routinely measured in the blood, it is what is in the cell that matters most. When insulin resistance causes blood sugar to rise, the cell is deprived. We might call that HYPOGLYCELLIA.
Questions arise: When blood insulin rises, is that an indication that cells are being deprived of glucose? Might insulin level be a vital test? (Cardiologist Al Sears thinks so.) Can glucose-starved cells cause neurological, kidney and eye damage years before blood glucose rises and diabetes is a concern? Might a little sugar at the right time provide cells with what they need, bringing relief from pain and fatigue in various conditions? I don't find these questions answered in the literature, but this book makes them a vital concern.
Thank you, Bob Ranson, for raising questions that may change the face of medical science.

New Book Links Nerve Disease, Alzheimer's and Fibromyalgia
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-30
Type 4 Diabetes: Elevated Insulin. Lower Blood Sugar. 24/7 Pain. is based on a seven-year journey by the author, Bob Ranson, from cardiac arrest in 1999 to a life of constant pain and complications, a pacemaker and dozens of only partially-effective medications. Now, the author is living pain and drug free through the discovery of the link between the nerve disorder and glucose levels.

More than a personal journal, Type 4 Diabetes combines the author's experiences and discoveries with ground-breaking research being conducted by experts in Alzheimer's, fibromyalgia and other chronic disorders. The title, Type 4 Diabetes, in fact reflects and pays respect to the work being conducted at Brown Medical School on halting the progressive degeneration of Alzheimer's Disease by treating it with a new class of diabetes medications. In 2006, the Brown team proposed that Alzheimer's be relabeled as Type 3 Diabetes.

Suffering from both autonomic neuropathy and diabetes, the author literally stumbled across his findings as he recorded the pain and effectiveness of the medications to treat the nervous disorder while he monitored daily glucose levels in another diary. The growing realization that he was dealing with at least related diseases led him to decision to use himself as a "lab rat" and test out theories and potential treatment approaches.

In his book, the author describes this process in a concise style and integrates his findings with the writings of medical experts about faulty glucose metabolism -- the cause of diabetes. The author subsequently points to an abnormal interaction between two key hormones, adrenaline and insulin, as being the foundation for the suffering experienced by people with neuropathy, fibromyalgia and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). He notes, in fact, that researchers at the National Institutes of Health know of the link but lack the funds to investigate it at this time.

The goal of the book, as the author states, is not to answer questions. Rather it is to engage patients and experts to explore in detail the broader implications of blood sugar problems; not just the highs of traditional diabetes treatment, but the low levels of glucose as well.

The questions raised by the author are intriguing, to say the least. The style is easy to read and understand even though the topic is complex. The author backs up his personal journey with enough research, footnotes and citations to lend credence to his arguments. You would do well to buy this book if you or a loved one has diabetes, neuropathy, Alzeiher's, fibromyalgia and/or hypoglycemia.

I found the guide to be exceptionally well done and user friendly. Every person with Diabetes and/or obesity, hypertension or other illness that may pose increased health risks should buy and read this guide.
I have been in the health care field for many years and I have read numerous articles and books and I have found this guide to be one of the best examples of clear-cut, concise information that a patient could readily absorb and gain valuable insight to improve their overall well being.
Thank you Melissa for yet another fine piece of educational material!

This is a great book for someone wanting to learn about diabetes. I was recently diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and this book help take the anxiety from the shocking news and replaced it with facts and many "how to's" and options to improve the situation. If you want to help a loved one who has diabetes - this would be a great guide to assist you. A must read.
