ByettaReview Date: 2008-03-10
I have to say that I live in England where Byetta is just being prescribed so I thought that the information might come handy in the future.
I have to confess I'm only half way through the books but I can't stop raving about what I have read so far. He explains Byetta so simply and his one recipe in the book has come as a G-dsend because I have real problems finding foods that I can eat as a type 2 diabetic.
I've recommended this book to every diabetic I know on all the message boards I belong to.
It's a must read for all type 2s.
One fantastic piece of news? I was called today by the diabetes nurse and have been put on to Byetta.
All I can say is thank you David for this wonderful book.
Excellent readReview Date: 2008-05-15
I expected to like this book. I've been a fan of David Mendosa's writings for several years, and how can you argue with a book about weight loss written by a man who has lost over 100 pounds? So I posed a tough question when I started. I'm a diabetes writer also, although on a much smaller scale; I initially lost 30 pounds (which has stayed off) on Byetta, but my weight loss then stopped. Does this book contain any new or helpful information for me?
In the past, I haven't liked diabetes books that 1) lost me in pages of technical terms and numbers, 2) included lengthy anecdotes and case histories that might be irrelevant or even unsafe to use as models, or 3) gave so many recipes that I found I'd bought a cookbook instead of the information I was seeking.
This book does none of those things. There's a lot of detail about the history of diabetes, current drugs and treatment options, and it's all based on solid research. But the research is in the Endnotes section, where it doesn't interfere with the reading. The personal anecdotes are brief and on point, and the author gives only one recipe, a breakfast dish whose main ingredient may surprise you.
It's written in a clear and engaging style, with bits of humor and some behind-the-scenes peeks at the drug industry. I enjoyed the story of Dr. John Eng, the discoverer of Byetta; the doctor was unaware of the drug's weight loss benefit until much later, when it appeared during clinical trials. But Dr. Eng is unable to prescribe Byetta himself, because it's not on the formulary of the Veterans' Administration where he has spent his career.
If you're diabetic and overweight, this may be the only book you'll need to start you off toward better health. The main thread of the book, of course, is the author's own journey and an outline of his current diabetic routines: diet, exercise, medication, and the reasoning behind them all. But you won't be bored, and I picked up several new techniques to try. There are many good books about diabetes; David Mendosa traveled the weight loss road himself before drawing the map for others, and that perspective is invaluable.

DO also read about glycemic index and especially GLYCEMIC LOAD (great resources online, especially) and learn what foods are your friends. Your glucose level is quite manageable if you learn the basics and find the discipline to develop a new lifestyle.
GOOD LUCK!

Diabetes Type 4 a real eye openerReview Date: 2007-01-30
View of the author of HONEST NUTRITIONReview Date: 2007-08-10
Glucose is the energy source of the cell. Though glucose is routinely measured in the blood, it is what is in the cell that matters most. When insulin resistance causes blood sugar to rise, the cell is deprived. We might call that HYPOGLYCELLIA.
Questions arise: When blood insulin rises, is that an indication that cells are being deprived of glucose? Might insulin level be a vital test? (Cardiologist Al Sears thinks so.) Can glucose-starved cells cause neurological, kidney and eye damage years before blood glucose rises and diabetes is a concern? Might a little sugar at the right time provide cells with what they need, bringing relief from pain and fatigue in various conditions? I don't find these questions answered in the literature, but this book makes them a vital concern.
Thank you, Bob Ranson, for raising questions that may change the face of medical science.
New Book Links Nerve Disease, Alzheimer's and Fibromyalgia Review Date: 2007-01-30
More than a personal journal, Type 4 Diabetes combines the author's experiences and discoveries with ground-breaking research being conducted by experts in Alzheimer's, fibromyalgia and other chronic disorders. The title, Type 4 Diabetes, in fact reflects and pays respect to the work being conducted at Brown Medical School on halting the progressive degeneration of Alzheimer's Disease by treating it with a new class of diabetes medications. In 2006, the Brown team proposed that Alzheimer's be relabeled as Type 3 Diabetes.
Suffering from both autonomic neuropathy and diabetes, the author literally stumbled across his findings as he recorded the pain and effectiveness of the medications to treat the nervous disorder while he monitored daily glucose levels in another diary. The growing realization that he was dealing with at least related diseases led him to decision to use himself as a "lab rat" and test out theories and potential treatment approaches.
In his book, the author describes this process in a concise style and integrates his findings with the writings of medical experts about faulty glucose metabolism -- the cause of diabetes. The author subsequently points to an abnormal interaction between two key hormones, adrenaline and insulin, as being the foundation for the suffering experienced by people with neuropathy, fibromyalgia and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). He notes, in fact, that researchers at the National Institutes of Health know of the link but lack the funds to investigate it at this time.
The goal of the book, as the author states, is not to answer questions. Rather it is to engage patients and experts to explore in detail the broader implications of blood sugar problems; not just the highs of traditional diabetes treatment, but the low levels of glucose as well.
The questions raised by the author are intriguing, to say the least. The style is easy to read and understand even though the topic is complex. The author backs up his personal journey with enough research, footnotes and citations to lend credence to his arguments. You would do well to buy this book if you or a loved one has diabetes, neuropathy, Alzeiher's, fibromyalgia and/or hypoglycemia.

I found the guide to be exceptionally well done and user friendly. Every person with Diabetes and/or obesity, hypertension or other illness that may pose increased health risks should buy and read this guide.
I have been in the health care field for many years and I have read numerous articles and books and I have found this guide to be one of the best examples of clear-cut, concise information that a patient could readily absorb and gain valuable insight to improve their overall well being.
