This book has a wealth of useful information and would be equally useful for people that have had the condition for a period of years or have only just been diagnosed.

The book manages to combine a useful introduction to diabetes (including a lot of information that I personally only discovered the hard way) with more advanced material that would appeal to an individual that wanted to improve their overall diabetic control.

There are some drawbacks: the breadth of the audience addressed by the authors means that some of the early chapters seem overly simplistic; and the book is very much geared to the US ("cups" for dry measure and ounces for wet measure, what are you people thinking?). However the comparative dearth of diabetes literature aimed at the patient and the overall quality of the work means that this is one of the best buys on the market.

This is a welcome addition to the literature on diabetes, offering patients and families not only the necessary information they need to cope with this chronic illness but, more importantly, providing the reader with a sense of empowerment, a way to "adapt diabetes to fit your life instead of adapting your life to diabetes." Encouraging diabetics to take control of their lives, to individualize prescribed care, to manage their disease in a way that works for them sets this book apart. Its approach and methods are applicable to any chronic illness. Well-organized and beautifully written, it is also filled with personal comments making the reader feel he is not alone. It is outstanding - the best of its kind!

This was the first book to read on diabetes and frankly I was quite disappointed. There is some basic info on diabetes in the first chapter as well some good suggestions, but as the book goes on it focuses on one topic only - take charge of diabetes management, with an endless variety of suggestions, which I am afraid tell you pretty much the same thing. Kind of waste of paper and maybe it could have fit into two articles rather than whole book. The good part is you can read in in a few hours. There is also little inspiration the book can offer. Perhaps it's just me looking for a book with different qualities after managing my diabetes for more than 2 years now.
On the positive side the book is about both diabetes 1 and 2. I'd guess for an introduction though it might actually serve its purposes.

I am an RN that had cared for patients with diabetes in the hospital but really didn't "get it" until I spent a week with my brother-in-law as he recovered from one of many surgeries he has needed because of complications of his diabetes. I can't tell you how great it is to read a book that takes into account the complexities of each individual living with diabetes... physically, mentally and emotionally. This book is not only beautifully written and easy to understand but it offers a clear, flexible and guilt-free way to manage diabetes so that you and your family can focus on life. Many of the insights in this book can be applied to any chronic health issue. The title says it all....The Little Diabetes Book You Need to Read. Really! L Weisband

It is beautifully written by two people who really know what they are talking about. If you have diabetes or if someone you love has diabetes, buy this book!

I bought this cookbook recently to give to someone just diagnosed with diabetes and spent a good deal of time reading the recipes, myself. It is a good cookbook for anyone who is interested in eating healthy. I copied some of the recipes for my own use. I particularly liked some of the chicken recipes as well as the recipe for black bean soup. Each page of the book is divided into thirds so that you can mix and match different foods as you plan your meals. When you get past that initial barrier of figuring out what is going on with the book, you will like this cookbook tremendously. There is a wealth of information here to make us all healthier eaters.

How to Live the Sweet Life
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-24
Charles Creekmore has lived in many parts of the world, and in this book, he invites us along on his travels - not only from state to state, but through his ever-changing states of mind as he learns to live (and thrive) with diabetes.

The diagnosis of a chronic illness can be a tremendously demoralizing event. But as Creekmore discovered, it might be the exact impetus we need to improve the state of our soul, and how it relates to our daily lives. Being forced to reexamine our priorities, the way we earn a living, the basis of our self-esteem, our relationship with nature, and all the unhealthy little habits our bodies and minds have learned over the years - this can be the "silver lining" of illness. And what's more, this increase in spirituality can, in turn, improve the health of the body (as illustrated by Creekmore's interviews with patients and doctors).

Spirituality means different things to different people and, in spite of the title, this book is not overly biased toward any one philosophy or religion. Never preachy, it simply encourages you to try some new (or new-to-you) strategies for lightening the burden of diabetes, or any other chronic illness. ( I highly recommend "The Grand Silence" - I've found that earplugs can have a huge effect on my level of stress!)

All of us will have to face change and loss sometime in our lives, and this "maintenance manual" can help anyone do that with a little more strength.

From managing one's emotions rather than being ruled by them, to accepting that diabetes is not the end but an eminently treatable condition and that life is worth celebrating, Zen And The Art Of Diabetes Maintenance is a superb presentation written with humor, flair, and abiding spirituality. Zen And The Art Of Diabetes Maintenance is very highly recommended for anyone having to deal with adult diabetes in themselves or a loved one.

There is nothing new which would add to your knowledge of basic "new age" cliches by reading this book. It would not be bad if he applied new age concepts, in a unique manner, to diabetes management. But , he doesn't. The only thing that makes this a "diabetes book" is the fact that his diabetes caused him to begin a search in the new age section of his local bookstore. Usually, ADA books are excellent, but this is one time satori was missed.

Hi! This book is well written, well researched and VERY informative. Just because a doctor prescribes something to treat your illness doesn't mean it's good for you or that their answer is the only answer to your treatment. In fact, the side effects could be far more harmful. This book needs to be in your home library, so you can research your meds before you have the prescription filled. Better yet, before you visit your doctor. Best, Christine

But which doctors are these? Unfortunately, it turns out in many cases, these four doctors also happen to be on said product's payroll. Even when conflict of interest is not quite so clear cut, specific and serious problems exist in the way drugs reach the U.S. public. Doug Bremner provides a frightening indictment of a broken system.

Chapter one provides a quick overview of the scope of the problem, placing it in an historic perspective. It describes how we have arrived at the current drug approval methods and the troublesomely cozy relationship between corporations and regulators. It briefly discusses the impact of profit driven drug development, and aggressive marketing. Although first chapter has no end-notes (following chapters do), it does reference a number of books and of investigative journalism articles.

Wonderfully written in clear non-technical language and organized by diagnosed condition, the remaining invaluable chapters provide detailed examples of the results of this broken system. In his introduction, Dr. Bremner states that this book is not a reference. In that it is not an exhaustive listing of all current drugs and their side effects that is true. However: being so cleanly organized well indexed, and providing many specifically justified recommendations, Before You Take that Pill should be an important home reference for U.S. health care consumers.

A final critical note: it is both stated by the author and clear throughout that the book is not intended as anti-pharmaceutical. It is rather, to provide consumers with the information needed to make more fully informed decisions as to the risks and benefits of certain treatment options.

This book is a must read! Doug Bremner has researched and applied an unbiased, fact based approach to the many questions we as consumers have with the drug mania around us today. His writing technique is witty and spellbinding! I will think twice for myself, as well as for my family and friends, about accepting prescribed drugs BEFORE exploring possible harmful adverse effects and most importantly healthy alternative options!

If you take responsibility for your own health, buy this book.

Must have for the home library. I use mine all the time at work (I am an RN in a VA hospital), but the first drugs I looked up were the ones my mom and dad were taking.
I have seen drug reactions in my practice and effects from mixing too many chemical combinations together.
The facts about how a particular drug interacts with the body is important knowledge to have before deciding to use the drug. The other piece of information is to remember that all institutions have some unscrupulous individuals in positions of authority. This is true whether discussing Government, the Church, the Oil Industry or the Drug Industry.
As mundane as it seems, diet, exercise and positive attitude remain the most inportant factors in remaining healthy and fighting disease.

A thousand thumbs down for this book !!!

This book is nothing but a person's rage against Roche, because they didn't want to cooperate with Dr. Bremner in his doubtful Accutane study, linking it with depression and suicide.

If Roche had cooperated with Dr. Bremner with his requests, I can assure you that this book would have never existed.

I know of several high respected researchers who prefer not to comment on Dr. Bremner's doubtful research (of course I won't type their names).

I wonder why a psychiatrist is against psychotropic medications, when he has written hundreds of studies about these kind of drugs.

Excercise and diet WON'T cure depression for severely depressed people as Dr. Bremner states is this book. It this were true, then pharmaceutical copmanies would be in bankruptcy. The final point is that prescription drugs (whether psychoitropic or not) save lives.

Every prescription drug has side effects, that's what makes them good. If you read tylenol's rare side effects you would see that one of them is death. And just because of this RARE side effect, people woun't refuse to take it if they have a headache.

Also, did you know that you can die from taking a shower. Yes, you can slip with the soap and hit your head and die. And just because of this risk, do you think that people would never take showers? Of course not !!

The same principle applies to prescription drugs.

This book is very basic, when my daughter was diagnosed at 18 months, I found I was looking for more detailed information than this book had, the pink panther book was great for clinical knowledge, but there is still no great book on the market with the day to day advise I think a parent of a toddler with diabetes needs, like which sippy cups have ounce markings on them so you can measure 4 oz juice easiest and the value and ease of weighing fruit versus measuring it in cups. These are the things parents need, this book was bland.

This is a very reassuring book. I recommend it as a starting point for parents who have been through hard times in the hospital, when they had their child diagnosed with diabetes. We have been through this experience when our 2-years old child was diagnosed with diabetes, we were struggling, not believing, looking for advice everywhere. This book helped us put ourselves together, and start dealing with it in a mature way. It first teachs you how to deal with diabetes emotionally which is the most important step in the treatment, how to explain it to your diabetic kid, his brothers/sisters, how to make injections easier for you and your kid, and many other useful advices. It is written from the nursing point of view, so you must have another comprehensive home reference.

I got this book for my son who just started kindergarten. This book has delightful illustrations, addresses the work and frustration that goes into having diabetes, but is also very empowering. The language is simple but honest. It is the first time we have gotten him a book that addresses diabetes, so I watched his face carefully as I was reading it to him for the first time, and he just grinned every time he recognized something of himself in the main character, Lara. I am so glad we have this book and highly recommend it.

It can be challenging for a child with diabetes to go to school in a place where other kids don't quite understand what having diabetes means and the fact that children with diabetes are like them, except for a pancreas that doesn't work the way it should.

This title can be a great help for parents of kids with type 1 diabetes to explain the children around them what diabetes is like and what insulin, insulin pumps and testing imply, so that diabetic kids can feel better understood in school and other social environments.

The children in the books were not able to eat regular food and their lives seemed restricted. And then I read Lara Takes Charge. I was thrilled to find a book that is positive that focuses on the fact that the child is normal and can do everything that all other children do- that is how I want my child to live his life. This is an uplifting happy book and my son and I love it.

If you have a younger child, say younger than 8, it is a very nice and simple book.

"There She Is--An American Survivor"

Review Date: 2001-09-30
Forget everything you thought you knew about the Miss America Pageant. After reading Nicole Johnson's Book "Living with Diabetes," it's clear this independent-thinking reformer immediately stepped off her pageant runway and into the trenches as a hands-on activist, lobbying for more comprehensive medical funding as well as raising both public consciousness and millions of dollars for diabetes research, forever metamorphosing public opinion along the way.

Without pandering or reverting to classic 'pageant Pollyannaism,' Nicole honestly and openly weaves a theme of conviction, hope and often painful realism. Particularly gratifying was how she consistently overcame obstacles and utilized the Miss America crown as a means to achieve diverse objectives as opposed to the title being the ultimate objective unto itself.

There she it...advocate, nonconformist, scholar, survivor. While perhaps altering the 'perfect ideal' of the Miss America dream, by giving the reader the opportunity to walk in her footsteps, Nicole conveys a sense of what the 'job' of Miss America is realistically like, made more complex by her constant struggle with an all too often debilitating disease.

Explaining, in easy to comprehend layperson's terms, the symptoms, causes, effects and potential cures for diabetes, Nicole provides an invaluable and potentially lifesaving public service in a format that is both sincere and heartwarming.

"Living with Diabetes" is classic American autobiography at its finest--candid, funny, introspective and inspiring--and is destined to become the great American success story of this decade.

A page turner that has some great laughs, and also has a great message. Tom's unflagging optimism and positive outlook that he will succeed at the tremendous task he has volunteered to undertake is a great message for all who suffer from diabetes. Tom's story is effective in raising awareness that the dangerous side-effects from this potentially disabling disease can be effectively fought off by staying active and not letting adversity or the "can't do's" get in your way. It will carry the reader along for a most enjoyable read about a very memorable trip.

This was a feel good story about one mans' journey accross the continental divide of his own self confidence and pre-conceived notions of what the limits of human endurance are. Having driven accross the country several times in what was seemingly endless hours of freeway glaze I cannot imagine the core of strength it would take to even make it over the same Rocky mountains that caused my modest car to achieve a maximum speed of 50 MPH let alone finish the entire journey across these great United States. This especially given he has Diabetes and once weighed over 300lbs. It seems he is a poster child for the lifestyle he endorses. Bravo Mr. Beck you are an inspiration for us all and this book is written in a page turning style that will attract itself to many types of readers, and will get out the word that your journey was meant to.

Tom, as I read your book I was amazed by all the planning, and work it took to make this walk across America. I was struck by the realization that people with diabetes really needed to be aware of how they can help with there health and that we all need to take more interest in our health care. It really does depend on us to take charge of our lives. I felt motivated to take charge of my own life and health as I read every page. I was in awe of the mental and physical endurance it took for your walk.....and I felt Paula was a saint being right there with you. You're extraordinary people!

My heart was touched by your story of your mom and your fortitude to take charge of your life as you discovered that you where a diabetic. As I read I felt I was right there beside you experiencing everything you were talking about with each page of your book. I laughed and I cried with you. I cringed as the cars passed on the interstate. I felt the rain, the heat, the storms, the fears, the excitement, the altitude (I really huffed and puffed with that part.) This was a real adventure for me since I had never even really thought about how all the elements would effect you....and most people would of given up when faced with what you faced. Wow what an accomplishment.... you're my hero in a new way Tom. Thank you for walking for diabetes, thank you for writing about your walk..... this is a fantastic book and 5 stars in my eyes.

Tom Beck's description of his sojourn across the country to promote the cause of the American Diabetes Foundation is a fun and uplifting read. Especially his discriptions of; small town America, The ups and downs of his (and his wife's) emotions during their four month journey and how a formerly overweight, three pack a day smoker diagnosed with diabetes could meet and exceed his challenges.

A great book to spend a couple of hours with!
