Stacey deals with her diabetes very well until this book. Afterward she gets back on track though. I can't believe she ate all that chocolate when she knew she'd probably end up in the hospital. Actually, she DID end up in the hospital. I was not suprised when she was at her dads and had to go to the ER. But I recommend this book to anyone who likes the BSC>

Stacey is a diabetic and craves for chocolate and sweets- to be able to eat the way normal people can. She is visiting her Dad in New York when her thoughts force her to eat a Mars Bar. Tasting how good this is she decides to eat more and more sweets, which puts her in hospital. Eventually Stacey gets out of hospital and vows never to do it again.

Stacey visits her father and does not stick to her diet. But when Stacey keeps on drinking water, Stacey's dad thinks it is time to call the doctor. Stacey begged her father not to say it to her mother, but Mr McGill still said. In this book, Stacey learns a lesson that is valuacle to her: Always stick to her diets.

Stacey is having troubles with her diabetes diet these days. She is a brittle diabetic which means she has a tricky form of the disease and she must stay away from sweets. The temptations seem to drive her crazy and so she slips and eats the "forbidden food". This sets her down a tricky path because she wants more now not to mention her blood sugar is already messing up because she was sick previously. Pretty soon she ends up in the hospital and has to get better. I think this book is really good. Some people say the information is not true about diabetics but much of it is - especially considering she is a brittle diabetic. Enjoy!

This is an excellent cookbook to have on hand, whether you have diabetes (like my partner) or you're trying to change your diet to lose weight (like me). All of the dishes I've tried are very simple to make, call for readily available ingredients, are very tasty, and none have left me feeling like I'm "on a diet." She has all kinds of helpful hints and tips for cutting fat and calories. One of the things I especially appreciate is that so many of her recipes are designed for four servings. There are only two of us in my household, but she uses a 8" square pan to cook a lot of these in specifically so you can cut down the middle and easily measure out the four servings. She's marked the dishes that freeze well so you can set the other two servings aside and freeze them for a quick dinner in the future. I cannot say enough good things about this cookbook and would recommend it to anyone!

Great book and I highly recommend it..

Since I am diabetic and overweight I have tried all the classic diabetic recipes and found them all to be tasteless and time consuming to prepare. Ms. Lund's recipes use products you have on hand and the resulting meal has both taste and is quick to prepare. It is important to me that I don't have to spent hours preparing it and it satisfies my hunger for things I shouldn't have. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is diabetic and especially those who are classed as "border-line" diabetics.

This cookbook is an easy tool in everyday cooking for diabetics or those who need to be sugar/carb concsious. The recipes are simple and healthy without being bland and boring. I would recomend this book for anyone who is looking for nutritional recipes that don't take a lot of effort. The nutritional facts are also clearly marked on the page of every recipe.

This is a great cookbook for really simple, convenient tasty recipes (as are all of Ms Clegg's books.) She does a great job combining fresh ingredients with a few packaged convenience foods. It's nice to know that there can be a healthy, delicious dinner on the table in 30 minutes (or so). The taco soup is one of our favorites!

I will say that this is not a "natural" diabetes cookbook. Still, I use it frequently and make changes or adaptations to fit it into our organic lifestyle.

Cookbooks can be expensive but this one is not and you get a lot of good, usable recipes for your money.

I tend to modify all recipes, but I really appreciate the dietary guide - esp. for counting carbs. I wanted some fresh ideas for everyday meals where I could present good meals that fit my daughter's needs. My daughter, who has juvenile diabetes, is a teenager who is very active and loves good, healthy food. This was a good choice for us. By the way, the whole family has enjoyed these recipes.

Healthy recipes, all nutritional stats included, and oh, my goodness, the Chicken and Sausage Gumbo rocks!! I'm definitely pleased with it.

The Diabetes, Calorie, Carb, Fat, Cholesterol, Sodium, Fiber, Protein, Serving/Exchange Bible!

Review Date: 2008-05-10
This book is endorsed by The American Diabetes Assn. & The American Dietetic Assn. It should also be endorsed by The American Heart Assn. Not only does it help give the reader information needed for a diabetic, it also gives information needed for a person with heart disease.
My husband has diabetes, high cholesterol, quadruple bypass, heart disease, stroke, 100% occluded carotid artery on one side and 60-70% occluded on the other side, just to mention a FEW of his problems.
This Guide not only addresses the diabetes & carbohydrate issue, but also addresses the cholesterol issue. I use it in conjunction with several Diabetes/Cholesterol Cookbooks. For every item, 11 columns of information as follows are listed: Serving Size, Calories, grams of Carbs, grams of Fat, % Calories of Fat, grams of Saturated Fat, mg. of Cholesterol, mg. of Sodium, grams of fiber, grams of Protein, and # of Servings/Exchanges.
The foods are grouped according to category. There are 28 categories. The categories are presented in a logical, systematic way, making this book an easy reference guide for a clueless novice like me.
I highly recommend this book not only for diabetics but for people with heart disease, for people on Weight Watchers diet and especially for the rest of us making up the majority of America who are overweight.
According to John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Center for Human Nutrition, by the year 2015 ---- that's only 7 YEARS FROM NOW ---- 75% of American adults will be overweight, 41% will be obese and nearly 24% of U.S. children or adolescents will be overweight or obese.
In 2004, 32% of Americans were obese. Forty years ago, in 1964, only 13% of Americans were obese.
At risk are women ages 20 - 34 years old, regardless of race or ethnicity; 80% of black women age 40 and above are overweight while 50% are obese.
Wake up, America and do it now, not 7 years from now. The Diabetes Carbohydrate & Fat Gram Guide, 3rd Edition, used as a starting point gives you basic information needed BEFORE you go to the grocery store. Buy a few good cookbooks in addition to this book you're good to go.
This book gives you 4 meal-planning approaches: carb counting, fat gram counting, food exchange system and calorie counting. So if one approach confuses you, you have other options. What a deal!
Buy the book. Use it. Don't end up like my husband.

Rather small and outdated for the price. The majority of the information in the book is nothing that you wouldn't find yourself just by searching on the Internet- for free. Sort of a disappointment really. I was so looking forward to receiving this book and then changing our dogs' diets but the diet plan in here is extremely vague. Look elsewhere for info if your dog has Cushings or SARDS.

I bought the book for my dad whose favorite dog was recently diagnosed with diabetes. My dad says the book answers many of his questions and provides him with the information he needs to understand the condition and properly care for his dog.

This book is a great "companion" which I guess it says it is, but I would have liked a more detailed explanation of the Atkins or South Beach Diet.

I think this book is great in every other way. So if you are buying this as a COMPANION it is a good buy. But you will still need to understand how the diet works.

The book gives some understanding but not a super-detailed one.

Oh and I agree with the other reviews -the writer is funny.

I got this book as a gift with a basket of diet stuff and the book is great. The guy who wrote it is very funny. My wife thought I was nuts when she heard me laughing while I was reading a diet book. I had her read a few pages so she can see why. The book is really good. There is an awesome section in it about the different cuts of meat which I agree with the other reviewer is very helpful. My wife made a few of the recipes for me and she said they were easy to follow. They were all really good so far. I loved the chicken parm one a lot and her meatballs have improved since I showed her the recipe. This book is really awesome. I read a couple of people say that the book needs NET CARBS. Yeah I guess that can be a help but I dont think it makes that big a difference. This is just a really good book.

I think overall this is a very good book and by far the most enjoyable diet book to read but I think it could do a little better in explaining what net carbs are and use net carbs in the carb counter section. The recipes and resources are good like the other postings say and the writer really is pretty funny. I do recommend this book highly but I think it'd be even better with that small change.

After stuggling with diets for years I happened upon the Atkins diet and decided to give it a try. I did fairly well with it for about 5 months before getting VERY bored with it. I have to say it is a great diet but can get boring. My sister picked up this book for me in Manhattan and gave it to me. The book really helped me get back in the swing of the diet. The writer has a really good sense of humour which helps. The recipes are really easy to do and helped make the diet less boring. I think the product reviews are helpful as well. The book is just very well done. I agree with another review I saw on here that an update with NET CARBS would be helpful. I think though this is one of the better books out there and by far the most fun and interesting to read.

The recipes are easy and the ones I have done are very good. The section explaining the different cuts of beef was so helpful I can't even tell you. I think this is the best book on the Atkins diet. The product reviews were also VERY helpful.

Dr. Latov's expertise -- as a clinician, teacher, and a founder of The Neuropathy Association(www,neuropathy.org) -- is well-reflected in the text.

When both the doctor and the patient are able to discuss neuropathy knowledgeably as a result of reading this work, the disease will be better understood and managed

I've heard this book called "the pumper's Bible," and it probably has as universal appeal to pumpers as the Bible once had in the world. Walsh provides a great deal of easily accessible information so that anyone who uses an insulin pump (or even just uses insulin) will get something from it. My only caveat is that the "rules" are like many other "rules" - they have their exceptions. All the recommended numbers/percentages are based on averages. So, for example, if you eat a low-carb diet, the percentage of total daily insulin use made up by one's basal dose is higher than he recommends.

"Pumping Insulin" is an amazingly good book on insulin pumps. It contains clear instructions on how to adjust basal, bolus, and correction rates as insulin needs change. These tables are particularly valuable for parents of Type 1 diabetics going through puberty.

When my daughter got out of her honeymoon period, her A1C scores went from 6.6 to 8.7. "Pumping Insulin" gave me the information and tools I needed to bring her A1C back down to 7.4 in 3 months, despite further growth spurts.

One chapter has estimates relating total insulin requirements to approximate settings for Basal, Bolus, and Corrections -- while intended for "starting settings", this information works well for re-adjusting your pump's settings when everything is really off. The Basal rate checks are clearly described and tell you exactly how to adjust your pump settings. One chapter has suggestions on the lines of "if you are seeing this, try that".

I've been in the alternative health world for a long time so was very interested in perusing this book. I was pleasantly surprised how thorough and concise Alan Smith's book is. Concise, yet, full of very valuable and researched material, this book gives the reader glimpse into a variety of therapies available to enhance health.

I can see this book being of great importance to those entering the field of alternative health, or those wanting to know what alternative/complementary therapies are available and what they consist of. The options are plentiful and it doesn't look like Alan missed any.

Great resource, a must-have in the library, and informative, Alan gives the reader options to healing. Highly recommend.

It wasn't that long ago that your family doctor was the only option when you were faced with health issues. You'd make an appointment and he'd prescribe a pill. If that magic pill didn't help you'd get another. Finally, given no other alternative, you'd just learn to live with your pain symptoms.

Today, it seems that more and more people are becoming open to complimentary and alternative health resources. Many are unhappy with their present care. Others are simply looking for ways to compliment their current treatments.

Although the actual methods vary substantially, most of these therapies look to the root cause of dis-ease and then seek to understand, release, or heal that issue. Still, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming for the average person. Where to even start?

In my opinion, reading UnBreak your Health is a very good way to begin. This book provides quite an extensive list of possible alternative and complementary therapies. Moreover, for each method, the author provides important contact information and comments from individuals who have actually tried the option.

"UnBreak Your Health: The Complete Guide to Complementary & Alternative Therapies" by Alan E. Smith presents a comprehensive guide useful for when you want to explore other options beyond traditional medicine. If you are considering complementary or alternative therapies you are not alone! According to a statistic presented in the introduction, in the year 2002 over half of all Americans turned to trying one of these therapies. Complementary and alternative therapies are positive on many levels. They focus on the fact that each person is a "unique individual composed of mind, body and spirit (or life-force energy)" and that each problem should be solved by tailoring the treatment to the specific person. Instead of focusing on the specific symptoms or issues as traditional medicine oftentimes does, complementary and alternative therapies often look at the body as a whole and work to heal the entire entity to make the body function in a more efficient manner. They go to the inner source of the problem rather than just treating the topical symptoms.

The author divides the different therapies up into three areas: the body, the mind and the energy/spirit. The "body" section presents an overview of such therapies from the familiar like chiropractic care and massage to the lesser known like Emei Qigong and the Nambudripdad Allergy Elimination Technique. The "mind" chapter focuses on therapies such as Art Therapy, Guided Imagery, Hypnosis, and Traumatic Incident Reduction. Finally, the "energy/spirit" section focuses on therapies which use human energy to heal such as Acupuncture, Crystal Bowl Therapy, Polarity Therapy and Qi Gong.

Each therapy examined in the book has a description explaining the origins, beliefs and techniques used in the method. After most descriptions is a favorite part of mine called "user comments" which aids in understanding how effective these therapies are. These are comments from actual users of these particular methods. It is very interesting to see the results that these people have had using the different techniques. This section makes the book more personable instead of strictly a reference guide. Websites are listed for most therapies if readers would like to seek out more information or specifics.

I recommend this thorough guide to complementary and alternative therapies to anyone who is frustrated with conventional medicine's approach to his health issues or to anyone who just wants to educate himself as to what is out there in terms of non-traditional care. "UnBreak Your Health: The Complete Guide to Complementary & Alternative Therapies" presents so many different options and techniques, some of which I never knew existed, and the information is presented in a very reader friendly and easy to use way.

Great book for people on the go who often stop at fast food joints or just like eating at restaurants. It helps me make the best choices when eating out. I was surprised by some of the calories and fat in the foods I ate. Salads are not always the best choice.

The information in this book is wonderfully helpful for planning before dining out. However, it is mostly fast-food information, rather than actual restaurants. Though the difficulty in assessing dietary exchanges in restaurant settings was explained, I hope that a future edition of this book would include more information from restaurants.

Even though fast food gets a bad rap, there are ways of eating healthier when having to eat out and this book shows you how. Sometimes foods may look better or worse than they seem because of hidden ingredients or factors you may not think of. This book helps you find the real numbers for a large variety of chain restaurants/fast food and takes the guesswork out of carb counting. I have my favorites marked with paper clips. I don't eat out without it.

I consider this book to be a completely indespensible resource for a diabetic. I've found this book to be useful in two different ways: #1 for just browsing through some of the restaurants and menu items to give you an idea about nutritional information in general. For example, you can peruse through a listing like "Starbucks" and learn how many carbs are in their various beverages, and then common things like bagels. Maybe you don't even like going to Starbucks, but such information is essential to know wherever you do go.

The second way this book is useful is to just pop in your suitcase or in your car when you travel. That way it just takes all the guesswork or awkwardness out of situations where you need to eat out, perhaps at restaurants you are not so familiar with. Just a quick glance at this book will tell you what will work for you and what won't.
