I was thinking this one book would be a good source for the real deal on anti-inflammatory foods. Instead it is more about the recipes the author uses at home to cook for her family. With such onliners as how she uses one of her old medical books as a press to squeeze water from some vegetable, the reader gets the impression someone is trying real hard to impress. This recipe book is a disappointment and so is the discussion about what makes anti-inflamatory foods work. The author states that her recipes are the "exteme" of what makes for an anti-inflammatory diet; I don't think so unless she means using organic butter which is not even a food. If you suffer from arthritis or have other inflammatory problems, save your money and look elsewhere for what makes up the real anti-inflammatory diet.

If you suffer from any inflamatory disease (arthritis, Asthma, Fibromyalgia, joint issues and kids Allergies (pollen, mites, etc!)) you have to read and follow this book. It was recommended to me by my naturopath. It will make a big difference in your well being and will help you to understand what and why things affect your body. My psorisis, Fibro, and ashtma are under control due to eating this way. A must read!

Only the first 53 pages of 227 pages discuss inflammation. The rest are recipes. The first part has no diagrams showing how inflammation acts on the body. I was disappointed in the book. It seems mostly a book of recipes. Also, the book has recipes for fatty and cholesterol rich animal foods which are know not to be heart healthy. I think that there are better and slightly more academic books out there that may be a better buy if someone wants to get into more depth on subject.

I found the recipes in this book to be a great starting point for replacing some of my unhealthy meals with healthier ones. The author includes recipes for snacks, breads, breakfasts, herbal teas, dinners and deserts. Ingredients are all non-allergy foods. The recipes are delicious and practical.

Although the diet does produce the desired health changes for me, the author's explanation of why the it works leaves much to be desired. For example, the paragraph on canola oil directly quotes a known urban legend (see urbanlegends.about.com and browse "Food and Drink", then "Canola Oil" for a good refutation). The section on dietary fiber glosses over the differences between soluble vs. non-soluble fiber. The author repeatedly stresses the importance of freshly grinding seeds to maximize their nutritional value, however purchasing pre-ground meal seemed to work just fine for me.

Fortunately the explanation of the diet only takes up 1/4th of the book. If there's anything I've learned about health theories, it's to always do you're own research to verify any and all claims. This certainly applies to this book. I still give it 4 stars because the recipes are delicious, easy to cook, practical, and have helped produce the inflammation-reducing effects I was seeking.

Wonderful book!

I got this book from the library, but loved it so much I bought it! I have an intolerance to wheat, and the recipes (especially the breads) look so easy and delicious. I have begun to incorporate more flax and fish after reading the book, and I feel great. I am hopeful it will make a big difference in my health and the health of my family.

By following the program of diet and exercise and behavior modification I now have reduced the number of medications I take, have more energy and lots of hope for a longer and healthier life. I bought this book a few months ago for my mother who lives with me and has diabetes. It is full of information that we didn't get from our doctor. I skimmed through it to better understand what she was going through but she read it like a novel and has been following the guidelines religiously. Particularly useful are the strength training exercises and stretching routine. She has created her own routine that she does upon awakening each morning. This is an excellent resource for the money.

Maybe it's just me, and it probably is, but I seem to keep searching for a cookbook, diet book, nutrition book that is practical and basic. Most of the food presented I either haven't heard of or it's not readily available. I can tell you from here on out that I will not be investing in any more books of this nature. I've been so discouraged. I live on a limited income, wish to eat healthy, wish to reverse if not just improve my diabetes, but I guess it's a project that requires much more time and money than I have available.

My mother has been a brittle diabetic ever since gallbladder disease caused her a chronic pancreatitis. We tried this plan for about 3 months, and her A1C increased by over 3 points to 9.1. Fasting blood sugars also went up significantly.

Going to the Atkins diet brought her A1C back to 5.7 and her average fasting sugars to the mid-90s. There just wasn't enough protein or fat in this plan according to her endocrinologist.

I have had rheumatoid arthritis in my hips and knees since I was three (3) years of age and never outgrew it. Over the years, I have tried countless remedies ranging from aspirin, Naprosyn and Celebrex. Nothing reduced the pain and swelling in my joints and the medication wreaked havoc on my digestive tract.

Approximately, a year and a half ago, my personal trainer recommeded his acupuncturist after I could no longer run and could barely walk. The heat, stiffness and swelling in my knees and hips had become unbearable.

After a thorough initial consultation, which revealed my diet consisted largely of "nightshade vegetables" and dairy, my acupuncturist recommended Challem's book. Since reading it and following suggested changes in my diet and adding natural supplements, I have been without arthritic pain and pharmaceutical drugs for a year and a half. It's amazing what detrimental effects processed food and pharmaceutical drugs have on a person's health. I have recommended and given copies of this book as gifts for those whom I care about and are also suffering from some degree of inflammation. Thank you Jack Challem - and to hell with my doctors and Rheumatologists who are brainwashed and dependant on this country's pharmaceutical industry.

For Anyone Serious about Eating Right and Feeling Great!

Review Date: 2008-06-18
I have read several books on health and diet and this is one of the best practical books I have found.

Jack Challem is an exceptional nutritionist who provides common sense advice for reducing inflammation, eating right and feeling great. It explains in wonderful detail where aches and pains come from and how to minimize them. It also addresses diseases such as cancer and how to minimize your risk of getting them by eating right and taking the right suppliments.

The Inflammation Syndrome reinforced much of the knowledge about healthy eating right that I already knew. It also provided me with new insights that lead a more pain free life.

Challem makes excellent food recommendation such as eating more salmon and halibut. He also encourages increasing intake of Vitamins C & E, Omega 3 fatty acids, green tea and flax seed. He discusses the benefits of Green Tea, Olive oil, and more.

Overall a great book for anyone serious about eating right and feeling great!

I've had asthma all my life - luckily it has been fairly well-controlled throughout adulthood. That is until I was unknowingly exposed to mold in my home. Even though the mold was remediated, I continued to experience severe, persistent asthma for over four months. I was referred to a pulmonologist and put on high doses of various types of asthma medication. I had a minimal amount of relief with these medications and still had to use a nebulizer two or three times a day.

I realized this was no way to live my life and started looking for other solutions. Thank goodness I came across Mr. Challem's book - after only one month of following his recommendations of the basic supplements (vitamin C, E, and fish oil) - I have found relief! I have not had to use my nebulizer in a week. I want to ease into the nutritional program because it will be a big change for me, but I can only imagine how great I'm going to feel after once it is implemented.

Take back control of your life, instead of letting your body do it for you!

I am so grateful for the courage he had to not only get through his experience but keep going on to success in what must have been a very scary situation. He had no example before him to follow. I cant say enough good about this book!I have read and re-read it and will continue to do so until I also am no longer a diabetic.I am getting every diabetic person I know to read the book. I have learned from my own personal experience that what he is saying is the truth. I just ordered his cookbook.I started following the advice in his book and my numbers went to normal for the first time probably since I was a teen.

Perhaps it is true, but anecdotal evidence is not good evidence. Perhaps this worked for the author, but having consulted a couple of Dr.s, (also anecdotal), it has been suggested to me that I should consider something a bit more balanced. It is possible to end diabetes, without having to go to such extremes.

I didn't find this book as enlightening as I thought it would be. I am not into Detoxing the body as the author is.
I think the write-up to promote the book should have indicated that this book is religious in nature as well as an opinion of the author.
On the positive side, there are some correct facts and to some could be very motivational.

This is a fantastic book on how to manage, control and perhaps reverse Type II Diabetes. The author Mr. DeWayne McCulley who has a background in biochemical engineering really did his research on the subject of Type II Diabetes. This book is first hand knowledge from the author who had almost died from and then was able to reverse the disease. The book is very clearly written, understood and so down to earth that once I started reading it I didn't want to put it down. I am so excited about how the plan has helped me to bring my sugar glucose and cholesterol back to normal, eat healthy, plus lose and maintain weight.

This is my story:

In November 2007 I went to my doctor for my yearly physical exam and discovered that I had an A1C level of 7.5 and a cholesterol level of 267. After following the diet and exercise plan in this great book my progress report was excellent. I went back for a check-up in May 2008 and my doctor was very pleased and surprised. My A1C had gone from 7.5 to 5.8 and my cholesterol count went from 267 to 160.

This book is a must to have for Type II Diabetics, those with a pre-diabetic glucose level, plus those who want to learn about how to manage high blood pressure and lower high cholesterol. It is all explained thoroughly in this fantastic book! I have even bought it as a gift for friends and family members.

All the Days of Her life by Lurlene McDaniel is a book about a girl named Lacey Duval. Lacey Duval was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of eleven. Lacey doesn't want anyone from school to find out because she's afraid that they'll start calling her names and treat her differently. Lacey Duval starts to feel out of control in almost every aspects of her life. There's nothing she can do about her parents divorce, there's nothing she can do about the death of her young friend, there's nothing she can do about having diabetes, that's what she believes. Then, one day she decides she wants to fit in, but she thinks that the only way she can do that is if she loses weight and keeps hiding her diabetes. She stars skipping meals and experimenting with her medication and sometimes ignoring it altogether.
One reason I really got pulled into the book is because it's about the life of a girl living with a disease, and it's kind of interesting learning about how she deals with the sickness. I like this story also because it doesn't tell just about her illness, but it tells about her whole life. My favorite part was when she passed out before a play because she was making herself throw up, and she was juggling with her insulin treatments. I think that if you like to read books about teenagers struggling with a disease than you should read this book.

Lacey Duval has diabetes, and she starts to lose control of them. Lacey is a girl of a family that is pretty much torn apart because her parents are divorced. Her therapist thinks that she lost control of her diabetes because she wanted to get back at her parents. Then she told him the real problem that she wanted to lose some weight and lost control. Lacey learns that Jeff came to town and she was really happy about that. Lacey then wants to get to know Jeff more, but he doesn't care as much about her as he used to. Lacey then plans to go to the Jenny House for the summer, but does she go? Nobody knows yet.

Even though I don't have diabetes, I get what Lacey was going through with. I'd give anything to be with the in crowd, have the most popular boy in school be my boyfriend, and drop a few pounds. Every girl in high school wants that. Who wouldn't? It's just harder and more dangerous to achieve when you have diabetes.

This was the first "One Last Wish" book I've read with Lacey, but I really liked it. Even though I didn't exactly know what happned with Lacey and Jeff the summer before.

Lacey is 15, and really wants to fit in. But she has diabetes, and is afraid of what kids will think if they know. She decides to keep it a secret, and just pretend she doesn't have it. Lacey wants to be thin, because she has an absurd notion that she isn't. To get thin, she starts giving herself less insulin, and sometimes "forgets" to give herself insulin. She's sure that when she's thin, the popular group will fully accept her. What she doesn't take into consideration is her health.

Then Jeff comes into the picture. He transfered to college in Miami. Lacey has so many mixed feelings for him. She wants to be with him, yet she doens't.

This book is good, even though it's too short. And I wasn't completely satisfied with the ending of Jeff and Lacey. Even though we all know it's inevetable they'll end up together. And because the next book says so, but you know... lol

This is a very readable and engaging bullock aimed to give you a jumpstart on your attitude. Keith Harrell is a former IBM salesman and trainer who parlayed his skills into motivational speaking. As is the case for any motivational book, the question lies in the book's lasting effect. Many of motivational books are the intellectual equivalent of Chinese food; 30 minutes after reading it, you are hungry for more and not sure what exactly you consumed. The key is implementing Harrell's suggestions.

Incidentally, if you ever get a chance to watch a live performance or tape performance of Keith Harrell, do so. I saw him on a recent PBS special and he was engaging and funny as hell.

Give your motivation a boost, even if only for a limited time, by reading and heeding "Attitude is Everything"!

This is a great book, I first heard Keith speak when I was at a previous company. Keith was speaking in the office in the U.S. and I listened from a speaker phone in the UK. I'm not easily impressed by motivational speakers but I was with Keith, so impressed that I bought his book on cassette so I could listen in the car. After following Keiths advice and tips I had a new outlook on life and also understood why sometimes things did not go my way, what Keith gives you are tools to help understand your current situation, what you want to achieve and how to go about achieving the correct mindset to reach your goals. Years later, I have lost the cassettes so I have purchased the book again. I've been walking 25% faster ever since :o)

I bought the audio-CD version of this book and I am glad I did; I don't think I would have finished it by reading.

The utility of Keith Harrell's book is not as a "self-help" book from the standpoint of helping the reader to identify changes to make in her or his life, then giving you helpful steps to make those desired changes. The value of Keith's story is in his personal stories, which individually and collectively are uplifting and provide vivid examples of "he turned it around, so can I". I identified with some of Keith's stories, which was helpful since they reminded me of my own limiting attitudes and how they effect my "circumstances".

His message reminds me of what I already know, that I have attitudes that are affecting my results, and I need to change certain ones to get the results I really want. Keith doesn't tell me 'how' nearly as well as others might, but he shares a compelling message of 'what' and 'why' attitude is everything. If you recognize the powerful force of your attitudes, both those that propel you forward and those that hold you back, then buy the audio-CD version of this book and listen to it more than once.

After a long, up and down battle with weight and food, I ballooned to a dangerous size that threatened my health. At 32, I was confused. I knew that it was harder to drop weight as one ages, but I wasn't that old. Worse still, I was hungry constantly. How could I lose weight if I literally couldn't stop thinking about food? I had forgotten what true hunger felt like.

Then I purchased The Sugar Solution. The first thing the book did was scare the crap out of me. I didn't realize how my eating habits literally endangered me. About 50 pages in, I began to realize that sugar was possibly keeping me from losing weight. It was affecting me on a cellular level, urging my cells to retain unneeded fat. It was also putting my arteries in severe risk of damage due to high blood pressure and unchecked sugar levels.

I began checking sugar content before I ate anything and was surprised to find how much sugar seemingly "safe" foods contained. Soon, I began to drop some weight. Amazingly, I found myself putting food away 3/4 into a meal. I began eating when I was actually hungry. A month and a half after reading the book, I am 25 pounds lighter and generally calmer. I don't suffer mood swings anymore--another symptom of blood sugar spikes.

My beef with this book is in the tone. The book was put together from pieces of magazine content, and it feels like it. Titles are consistently alliterate and tacky. Exclamation points should be used sparingly (or so I thought). After a few hundred pages of this, I began to get irritated, as the book felt less scientific and more corny.

Overall, I would absolutely suggest this book to people on the road to diabetes or people simply concerned about their health. For me, the culprit is sugar. If I can control my sugar, I can control my eating. Get healthy before it's too late.

UPDATE
Forty-five pounds shed and counting. I can't say things would have gone this smoothly if not for this book.

Every American eats an average of 5 and a half POUNDS of sugar a month.

No, you say. Not me. Oh yeah? Start counting.

This book is a must for those who would understand the role sugar plays in our lives and how our society has been turned into the fattest in the world through the food industry's inclusion of high-fructose corn syrup in almost everything it sells.

Commercially prepared foods are full of high-fructose corn syrup - which is not the "natural" sugar manufacturers would like us to believe it is. It's simple refined sugar - and it's deadly.

This is a must read book for those who wish to turn their lives and their diets around.

This book is very informative, but there is too much repetition. What would be equally useful would be some charts listing low and high glycemic foods, some foods that lower blood sugar, etc. I skimmed the book and made my own lists.

I'm insulin resistant and the books I read about insulin resistance & the glycemic index (different from glycemic load) years ago never mentioned slow twitch muscles or starch. I've been "slow twitch" walking every other day and I'm at about 80% on my food choices. I lost two pounds in the first week. I plan to increase my frequency of walking and become completely starch, pop & refined carb free! This book has provided a lot of answers for me in the food/mood/craving/weight gain connection. I'm back today to buy one for my mom who is diabetic. I highlighted the entire book on the first read and intend to start reading it again tomorrow - it's been a godsend in keeping me on track because it explains really well WHY carbs, starches and slow twitch muscles work the way they do. The recipes weren't really for me, but I would not hesitate to suggest this book for the rest of it's content. It's made me feel like I have control again. Love it!!

This book is very easy to read. It has some great information on the background of how we have gotten to the high rate of diabetes and obesity. The diet itself is very basic and easy to follow; not to metion, very scientifically based. I have and will continue to recommend this book to my patients.

not five, 6 stars!

Don't let the title turn you off, though I could've come up with something better: perhaps The Slow-Twitch Shuffle?

Nonetheless -- I want to give this book 6 stars!

I am no longer confused about food -- fat, protein, and carbohydrates -- or calories, colesterol, glucose, insulin, starch, refined sugar, how stored fat is gained and lost, the type and amount of exercise most people need, or what causes diabetes.

A breadth and depth of critical information is presented in a succinct, clear, and fluid writing that will have you breezing through this book in a couple of days, if not in a single day. The last third of the book comprised recipes.

My wife and I took turns reading chapters of this book aloud so we each didn't have to read it. We began this new way of eating and haven't looked back; it's been three weeks and we feel better already. A friend who hadn't seen me in while said, "are you getting taller?" lol

Dr. Thompson deservers some kind of award for writing this book.

While there are now many books out on the so-called glycemic index (GI), most of these pretty much miss the point that the low-GI approach to eating, while better than the usual, is still inadequate. By itself, relying on only the glycemic index misses some important issues in postprandial responses to various carbs. What really counts, regarding the postprandial state, is the glycemic LOAD of one's carbs. Dr. Thompson has done his research homework and explains the scientific rationale for the GL approach to controlling postprandial insulin spikes, and does so probably better than anyone else I've read. That's why readers here are so enthusiastic about the book. They should be; the low-GL approach to (lifelong) eating not only produces great results in terms of blood sugar, it balances some of the defects of a purely low-carb approach to eating. And, it gives more variety to low-carb-conscious folks who want to include things like fruit and legumes but are afraid to do so. Probably the best part, though, is that if you choose your food choices wisely and control the post-prandial spikes, you don't need to reduce your food intake; in fact, "diets" don't work long-term anyway. Eating heartily while still taking the weight off is a novel concept to many but it has been proven in the research.

But let's talk a minute about the critics of the GI/GL approach to carbs. This, surprisingly, includes a majority of the medical profession, many of whom are still 30 years behind the research. In fact, one could (quite accurately, unfortunately) go so far as to say that if someone wanted real advice on what to eat and nutrition in general, the last place they should probably go is their family doctor. That one nutrition course they had in med school 35 years ago, if they had any at all, unfortunately isn't enough. It gets worse. As one on-target cardiologist prominent on the web remarks, whose name I won't give here, if you want to increase your chances of getting diabetes, just follow the ridiculous carb advice still given by the American Diabetes Association; and if you want to increase your chances of getting heart attacks, just follow the current dietary advice of the AHA. These drug-company-dominated groups aren't exactly following the Hippocratic Oath very well ("first, do no harm"), but then again, it's hard to give up perks like free fancy hotels, fine dining, and other extravagant perks enjoyed by MDs attending seminars given by the big drug companies...But I'll leave that soapbox alone.

The low-GL approach to eating (I didn't say "diet", diets don't work) is the middle road between extreme low-carb and extreme low-fat advice, and it's the most reasonable way for most people to go. That includes about
all of us, not just the 25% of so estimated to have metabolic syndrome. This is an important point. Pretty much everybody has decreased ability to handle dietary sugars as we age throughout life; it's one of the unavoidable physiological negatives of getting older. Hence, the low-GL way of life not only makes sense for the insulin-resistant folks, it makes sense for everyone. The only thing I would add here to Dr. Thompson's book is that one can tweak this plan in various ways he doesn't mention much of. Various supplements are quite a help, and some pleasant food items like 1-2 glasses of red wine daily with dinner can really boost one's insulin sensitivity (wine is kind of glossed over in the book). Oh well. Next edition, I expect this cardiologist to include a section praising the virtues of raising a glass or two...Cheers!

I should have listened to Kevin!

One of the reasons I bought this book was for the list of foods. I can make no sense of his values for glycemic load because they are different from all others I have seen by a factor of 10! If I could know that for sure, i.e . the multiplier, then I could use the list. But as it is, the list is useless. The book is otherwise fine for someone who has not been obsessively researching this topic as I have been for the last month. If you are already conversant on the topic, save your money. If I had seen the book in a store before I ordered it, I would not have bought it.
