Diabetes Books

Well written, succinct with clear diagrams and pictures, it contains the most current research on how to live a long and normal life with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

This is a very practical book. A few of the chapter titles tell the story:

This book could save a friend or relatives life. If you know anyone (friend, spouse, parent, child or coworker) with diabetes, send them this book. Don't ask them, just send it to them.

If you have a teenager with diabetes, take the car keys away from them until they have read the whole book.

If you are a physician, give this to all you patients with diabetes.

If you run an HMO, give this to all your diabetes patients. It will pay for itself in the first month.

The hard reality is that we have an "epidemic" of obesity in children, the likes of which has never been seen before. Children are also getting OBESITY RELATED Diabetes and that is very, very serious...because while obesity carries its own risk factors (early onset heart disease, social rejection, etc)..diabetes can cause blindness, circulatory problems and worse.

This book is a guideline for parents who want to help their children from getting Diabetes - or to treat them if they do get it. The author means it when she writes "a take charge plan". This means parents and children can be pro-active and prevent diabetes or keep it from becoming even worse.

An absolute MUST READ for anyone with an obese child.

I have had Diabetes Type II for nearly 5 years and was finding myself
being prescribed more and more medications to control my increasingly
out-of-control blood sugar. My fasting blood sugar was never in range, no matter what I did. I didn't like the way I felt on the medications--they really didn't help that much (especially taking more insulin) and I felt increasingly tired. I was on a downward health spiral.

My New Year's resolution was to get off of the insulins and the Glucophage. Following the advice in this book--the diet and the supplements, I have been able to totally wean myself off of insulin and am halfway to being off the Glucophage. My blood sugars have never been more normal, and my fasting blood sugar is always in range now. I sleep better, have much more energy and I feel like I have come out of a mental fog.

This solution works. It's not for the lazy, nor those not willing to give up what they know they shouldn't be eating in the first place. Truthfully, I wasn't ready for this even a year ago. If you are ready, this book is a miracle gift.

Please be sure to work with your doctor on this and test, test, test your sugars all day to make sure everything is okay.

If you buy only one book about diabetes, esp. type 2 diabetes, BUY THIS ONE! All 3 authors are diabetic and nurses. It answers all your questions. I've recommended this to many. Money well spent.

I was diagnosed Type 2 about a year ago. It is my nature to research everything and I have been, quite frankly, frustrated by the limited amount of information I could find on diabetes on the web. Most diabetes books are just recipe collections so I was skeptical when my wife picked up this book at a "big box" store but I think it is fantastic.

The first half of the book is background on Type 1 and Type 2. I found the technical information to be well written and easy to understand. The chapter on medications for Type 2 and how each addresses different aspects of this disease is worth the price of the book alone! Now I understand why my morning numbers are so high.

The second half of the book is the obligatory collection of recipes. I haven't tried any yet, but even if I only find 1 or 2 to my liking, this book is worth the price.

Sunset's "Diabetic Cookbook" is a treasure trove of easily understood, helpful information. Its introduction explains the importance of tailoring a diet to fit the indivdual, depending on the person's current health as well as his or her weight, age, and sex. The intro also tells how to use Food Exchange Lists compiled by the American Diabetes Association, read nutrient labels on food packages, and plan meals. This book includes seven generous categories of recipes: Soups, Salads, Meats, Poultry, Seafood, Meatless and Side Dishes. Each recipe has easy-to-follow instructions, a readily spotted ingredients list printed in bold type, and convenient Preparation Time, Cooking Time, Serving Exchanges and Nutrients. But what I really liked about this cookbook is its unique selection of various dishes. This is not just another rehash of frequently seen recipes. Yet its uniqueness does not make "Diabetic Cookbook" impractical. Its recipes use easily available ingredients and equipment commonly found in most kitchens.

Its was a gift for my Dad, but I think he uses it all the time! I know he turned around and bought one for a friend!
