DIABETES AMONG THE PIMA: STORIES OF SURVIVAL could've been featured in our Health Section, but is reviewed here for its narrowed focus on Native health and health care in this country. While the Pima community receives the primary focus, DIABETES AMONG THE PIMA offering the first in-depth ethnographic analysis of all causes of diabetes in this community, the book holds wider recommendation for examining Pima core values, health attitudes, and attitudes toward treatment, making it a 'must' for any college-level Native American collection.

Diabetes and the metabolic syndrome have been hot topics in the medical and psychiatric literature over the past few years. This book reviews the problem in detail, addressing the problem from various perspectives, including that from an Internist, Endocrinologist, Dietician, Pharmacist and Psychiatrist. They also consider the legal issues in regards to prescribing medications that increase the risk for diabetes. This is the most in depth and thorough review of the management of metabolic syndrome that I have seen to date. The book provides unique and innovative suggestions for managing these patients. This is an excellent book for anyone who treats this population, whether you're an Internist, Endocrinologist, NP, dietician, or psychiatrist. Highly recommended.

Diabetes Care Quick Study Guide

This ebook provides the most updated and concise information available regarding diabetes care. Meticulous in detail and truly useful.

This book has got to be one of the best Diabetic cookbooks I've come across. Other recipes from other cookbooks are missing flavour and the texture of the foods is not quite the same. In this book though the recipes are as delicious to read as to eat! A couple of our favourites so far are the recipes for meatballs (I've already made several dozen for freezing and this is great for quick easy meals) and we tried the Sweet and Sour recipe - YUM! There is a Blueberry Strusel recipe that turned out wonderfully and even the non-diabetics in our family liked this dessert!

This book is wonderful! I come home from a very busy day and I can have a wonderful quick meal and watch my health at the same time!!!

My retired doctor neighbor, Dr. William R. Updegraff, for whom I have the utmost respect and regard, corresponded with Dr. Kraft as he wrote this book to compare notes with his own experience in his long career of following diabetes in his own practice. Chapter 14 of the book allows the reader to understand that "the onset of Type 2 Diabetes probably occurs at least 12 years before clinical diagnosis." Dr. Kraft's extensive research conclusions now give people the opportunity to talk to their physicians for appropriate testing which will unmask a pre-diabetic state with all of its future consequences. This is a huge heads-up for which everybody should be tremendously grateful.

As a Type II diabetic, I have read many books about the subject. This book is very comprehensive and educational. The author delivers exactly what her subtitle says. She is strongly educated and experienced, and obviously quite dedicated to helping diabetics learn to live with the physical and emotional challenges they face on a daily basis. She does this by including comments throughout the book from past patients and quotes from numerous books and journals. Any subject about which a patient might need information can be found in this book. The final chapter addresses future issues, and she has included a glossary which is very helpful for the newly diagnosed. This is the first book I have come across which is written from such a passionate and personal point of view, and it should be read not only by the diabetic, but his family and friends as well.

Drs. Fong and Ross have compiled an excellent resource for patients and non-ophthalmologic clinicians. The comprehensive nature of the book and the clarity of presentation make it a must for all those who deal with diabetes! It has been shown in past research that much of the problems associated with diabetes could be avoided with appropriate identification and careful management of the disease. By helping further understanding, Drs. Fong and Ross have truly advanced efforts to reduce morbidity from diabetes.

Sporting a spiral binding so that it can lay flat for easy reference, The Diabetes Handbook is the collaborative effort of Diabetes Nurse Practitioner and Certified Diabetes Educator Ruth E. Lundstrom and Dr. Aldo A. Rossini (The William and Doris Krupp Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Diabetes at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center), and a highly practical and useful living tool. Individual chapters relate basic issues directly affecting the lives of diabetics and how to best keep the condition under control with proper diet and exercise. Simple, friendly cartoon illustrations enhance and illustrate the solid medical advice for people of all ages who have themselves (or know of a loved one) with this life threatening but medically treatable condition of diabetes.

This journal has been an invaluable tool to help me pinpoint areas that need work, as well as to track my exercise, food and blood sugar testing results! I take it with me to doctor's appointments too, as she likes to be able to look at how I'm doing in all of those areas so that she can make suggestions for changes that I haven't thought of myself. I highly recommend it!
