This book is great for sugar-free recipes. There are a TON to choose from....I have only made one so far (apple turnovers), and I am very excited to try more.

The recipes usually use healthier things like whole-wheat flour, which I really enjoyed. I also really like that after each recipe, the author tells you the calorie count and other nutritional information about the recipe (as well as diabetic exchanges).

The recipe that I tried tasted fantastic, and as I said, I am excited to try more. The book contains a very wide variety of recipes. I am a very picky person, but I found at least 15 that I plan to try at some point.

This book was wonderful. I really appreciated the authors writing it for people who are diabetic. Coming from a diabetic family it is often hard to understand the diet restrictions and exchanges that many cookbook feature. It has been comforting to have a cookbook I could understand. The recipes have basic ingredients that are found on most shelves. Even if you are not diabetic, you will enjoy the healthy and lovely to look at meals. Thanks!

This self-help book on good health is superb. The book is an easy-to-read primer on the metabolic syndrome (also called pre-diabetes) - a condition that, according to the author who has practiced Internal Medicine for many years and teaches at a major medical center, has become a worldwide epidemic. The chapters are neatly outlined on obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes. There's even a chapter that explains how the immune system and stress contribute to one's susceptibility to these conditions. What's makes it extra special, though, is the concise way the author explains how these conditions are "inflammatory diseases" of the body, the self assessment test quantifying your risk for disease, and the treatment (including traditional and alternative therapies) to forestall or prevent progression to diabetes and heart disease.

I wasn't sure what I was getting when I ordered this book. My initial thoughts were that this might be helful in managing our heart failure patients. After all chronic disease is chronic disease. I got so much more then I bargained for. "The Art of Empowerment: Stories and Strategies for the Daibetes Educators" is more then a book with the hows and the whys; it is a journey. One that encompases self-reflection and the willingness to take a good hard look at your existing belief system. The authors artfully walk you through how they developed their philosophy of empowerment. That empowerment for both the educator and patient come from the concepts of freedom and responsibility. "Because we are free to make choices, we are responsible for the consequences of out choices". The book is rich with stories from nurses, educators, psychologists and physicians who have taken the steps through self-reflection to create a vision. What is our purpose as diabetes educators? Each charpter is design to provide you with tools and exercises that will help you with the process of self-reflection. Empowerment is a vision or a philosophy of giving care, the vision comes before the method and the vison comes through self-reflection. Coincidently, while reading this book, I was doing some work with one of the NPs at our hospital who manages the diabetes clinic. It was amazing to me to actually see the many opportunites to use this strategy as we saw patients over the past two weeks. My NP has asked if she could borrow my book when I am done. I have decided to buy her a copy of her own.

I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and went looking for advise everywhere, including online. Of all the books listed, this one intrigued me enough to buy it and I am so happy with it. It's written in the calmest, clearest most helpful way. I got more information I could actually use in this book than from any other source. Other books are either too academic or dense or filled with jargon. This tells you what you need. I raised some points here with my doctor, and he addressed them. I wouldn't have thought of asking those questions if it hadn't been for Hetzel's book.

What took so long! Why is it only the good is published? This is something that kids face every day. But no one wants to talk about it. I think that people need to realize that life isn't colored rosy and that we do have kids facing these problems. I am glad that there is an author that takes the initiative to bring real life crisis' to the forefront. I applaud you!

A great book for medical and non-medical readers
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.

This book describes the transformation of diabetes from a rapidly-fatal illness to a chronic one with a host of new associated problems. Though written by a physician, the book focuses on this transformation from patients' perspectives. In addition, it emphasizes the impact of diabetes on not just the health of individuals but also on their day-to-day lives.

The highlight of this book is the collection of stories of individual patients and families. Drawing from letters and other patient records at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Feudtner vividly details the lives of diabetic patients in the 20th century. Of particular interest is a patient who corresponds with his physicians using self-drawn cartoons, a number of which are included in the book.

While this book will be of special interest to diabetic patients and physicians, I recommend it to any reader intersted in the interplay between modern medicine and the people it aims to serve.

Dr. Mitchell in an interview with Doug Kaufman hits a home run. He describes how eating and excersising along with supplementation, can reverse and even cure ailments and disease. It was a fascinating interview, one I listened to several times. Well worth purchasing.
